The Subtle & Sublime

Tashina Suzuki

Last evening when the Sun was setting on the heat of the day, softening the oblique spear of light; a coolness wafted thru the bean plants & the sprawling pumpkin patch in our backyard. It was then that I saw Her.

The Sun in Virgo – the Virgin Mother holding a sheaf of wheat like a secret in her heart.
I stood with Her in that luminous space in Nature between the dense & the subtle.

Salvador Dali

I held my mind out in reverence, wondering: When does the subtle become physical? Where is it, this ineffable space, where one fades into the other? – When the subtle becomes heavy, when the etheric becomes matter?

Jeanie Southworth

This gesture – so delicate & quick, often veiled – enigmatic & challenging; a fleeting moment, eternal in its becoming – It is the womb of possibility, holding the mysteries of substance & transubstantiation.

Salventor Pellwers

It can also be the place where we fall – the error of the missed target – The overlooked opportunity – The grasping clench…

There, at the abyss – at this sacred threshold – a Goddess dwells, who holds out her hand to us. The Divine Feminine Spirit of a gentle Alchemy, awaits our response.

Rudolf Steiner’s Lectures on this day

by Zak D. Parsons

Everything that irritates us about others can lead us to an understanding of ourselves. ~ Carl Jung

ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

Dejah Hilliard

Birthday of Hector, who Rudolf Steiner said was a living individual, later to be incarnated as Hamlet (See GA139 / 15.9.12)

Consider one of his characters, Hector. If you have any time available, you ought to study the figure of Hector in the Iliad — how plastically he is described so that he stands as a complete personality before us; how we see his affection for his paternal city, Troy, his wife Andromache, his relationship to Achilles, and to his armies; and how he commanded them. Try to call up this man before your minds, this man who possessed all the tenderness of a husband, and who clung in the ancient way to his home city of Troy, and who suffered such disillusions as only really great men can. Remember his relation with Achilles. Hector, as presented by Homer, is a towering figure from very ancient times, a man of great all-embracing humanity, for of course what Homer is describing belongs to a period well before his own, in the darkness of the past. Hector stands out above all the others, all those figures who seem mythical enough in the eyes of modern men.

Now take this one figure. Skeptics and all kinds of philologists may indeed doubt that there ever was a Hector at all, in the same way as they doubt the existence of Homer. But anyone who takes into consideration what may be understood from a purely human viewpoint will be convinced that Homer describes only facts that actually occurred. Hector was a living person who strode through Troy, and Achilles and the other figures were equally real. They still stand before us as personages of real earthly life. We look back to them as people of a different kind from ourselves, who are difficult to understand but whom the poet is able to bring before our souls in every detail. Now let us place before our souls a figure such as Hector, one of the chief Trojan commanders, who is defeated by Achilles. In such a personage we have something that belongs to the old pre-Christian age, something by which we can measure what men were before the time when Christ lived on earth..

I cannot go into everything underlying the historical prototype of the poetical figure of Hamlet, but through the research of spiritual science, I can offer you a striking example of how a man, a spirit of ancient times, reappears in the post-Christian era. The real figure underlying Hamlet, as presented by Shakespeare, is Hector. The same soul that lived in Hamlet lived in Hector. It is just by such a characteristic example as this, and the striking way the two different souls manifest themselves, that we can interpret what happened in the intervening time. A personality such as that of Hector stands before us in the pre-Christian age. Then comes the intervention of the Mystery of Golgotha in human evolution, and the spark it kindled in Hector’s soul causes a figure, a prototype of Hamlet, to arise, of whom Goethe said, “This is a soul that is unable to deal with any situation and is not equal to its position, who is assigned tasks but is unable to fulfill them.” ~Rudolf Steiner

*Feast of St. John Chrysostom*

Christine Shields

The bee is more honored than other animals, not because she labors, but because she labors for others. ~Saint John Chrysostom

st-john-chrysostom-christ

(The name JOHN is an initiatory title, used not in the personal sense, but as a way to designate the True Human Being, & CHRYSOSTOM = Golden-Throat or Honeyed lips)John Chrysostom’s preaching, by word & example, epitomizes the role of the prophet to comfort the afflicted & to afflict the comfortable. For his honesty & courage he paid the price of a turbulent ministry as bishop, personal vilification & exile.

There is much intrigue surrounding this great preacher from Antioch. Brought to Constantinople after a dozen years of priestly service in Syria, John found himself the reluctant victim of an imperial ruse to make him bishop in the greatest city of the empire. Ascetic, unimposing, dignified, yet troubled by stomach ailments from his desert days as a monk, John became a bishop under the cloud of imperial politics.

If his body was weak, his tongue was powerful. The content of his sermons, his exegesis of Scripture, were never without an exquisite exclamation point. Sometimes the point stung the high & mighty. Some sermons lasted up to two hours.

His lifestyle at the imperial court was not appreciated by many courtiers. He offered a modest table to episcopal sycophants hanging around for imperial & ecclesiastical favors. John deplored the court protocol that accorded him precedence before the highest state officials. He would not be a kept man. His zeal led him to decisive action. Bishops who bribed their way into office were deposed.

Many of his sermons called for concrete steps to share wealth with the poor.

The rich did not appreciate hearing from John that private property existed because of Adam’s fall from grace any more than married men liked to hear that they were bound to marital fidelity just as much as their wives were. When it came to justice & charity, John acknowledged no double standards.

Aloof, energetic, outspoken, especially when he became excited in the pulpit, John was a sure target for criticism & personal trouble. He was accused of gorging himself secretly on rich wines & fine foods, & yet he was as skinny as a stick. Also his faithfulness as spiritual director to the rich widow, Olympia, provoked much gossip attempting to prove him a hypocrite where wealth & chastity were concerned. His actions taken against unworthy bishops in Asia Minor were viewed by other ecclesiastics as a greedy, uncanonical extension of his authority.

Theophilus, archbishop of Alexandria, & Empress Eudoxia were determined to discredit John. Theophilus feared the growth in importance of the Bishop of Constantinople & took occasion to charge John with fostering heresy. Theophilus & other angered bishops were supported by Eudoxia. The empress resented his sermons contrasting gospel values with the excesses of imperial court life. Whether intended or not, sermons mentioning the lurid Jezebel (1 Kings 9:1—21:23) & impious Herodias (Mark 6:17-29) were associated with the empress, who finally did manage to have John exiled. He died in exile in 407.

Open thou my mouth, that I may sing forth thy praises

Sun Spear

Preparing for Michaelmas:

I watch the shadows lengthen. The angle of the sun, like the lance of Michael, a sunlit spear piercing awake my sleepy summer eyes, banishing the Sulphur, activating the iron in my blood. Am I ready to do battle with the dragon within?

If spiritual science is allowed to live in us & extend its transforming influence to our heart-space, what enters us as thoughts, is then changed, into the substance of light, into the purest light of thought. And in the living enthusiasm of the heart, this light of thought then rays out from our hearts into the macrocosm, as light of the redeemed intelligence of Michael; as enlivened human thought, which can be re-united with the world-thoughts of the gods.

Heart-Thinking is the essence of Michaelmas, as the festival of Enlightenment; where we can learn to experience an unfolding of our inner initiative & a free, strong, courageous will, that helps us fend off our lazy tendencies .

It is our job to strive to complete the never ending story, with the new Michaelic mysteries put forth by Rudolf Steiner, a true emissary of of this Sun Being, teaching us to count the human being as the 10th hierarchy. And so, work we must, as we stand once more on the edge of autumn.

See you there…

Rudolf Steiner’s Lectures on this day

ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

1828 – Birthday of Leo Tolstoy

1851 – Birthday of Mabel Collins

1901 – Deathday of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, French painter & illustrator

1907 – Rudolf Steiner writes the ‘Barr Documents’ while staying with Edouard Schure – These lectures were given on the fringe of the International Theosophical Congress held in Paris and attended by delegates from many countries. Rudolf Steiner himself attached a distinct importance to this course in Paris where he formulated a basic view of Esoteric Christianity which a few years later was to separate him radically from the Theosophical Society. In the 37th chapter of Rudolf Steiner, The Story of My Life [Rudolf Steiner Publishing Co., London and New York, 1928.] (written in 1924–25 shortly before his death) we find the following passage:

In the Paris cycle of lectures I brought forward a perception which had required a long process of “ripening” in my mind. After I had explained how the members of the human being — physical body; etheric body, as mediator of the phenomena of life; and the “bearer of the ego” — are in general related to one another, I imparted the fact that the etheric body of a man is female, and the etheric body of a woman is male. Through this a light was cast within the Anthroposophical Society upon one of the basic questions of existence which just at that time had been much discussed.

But the question was carried into the depths of the being of man. In his physical body man is bound up with the cosmos quite otherwise than in his etheric body. Through his physical body man stands within the forces of the earth; through his etheric body within the forces of the outer cosmos. The male and female elements were carried into connection with the mysteries of the cosmos.

This knowledge was something belonging to the most profoundly moving inner experiences of my soul; for I felt ever anew how one must approach a spiritual perception by patient waiting and how, when one has experienced the “ripeness of consciousness,” one must lay hold by means of ideas in order to place the perception within the sphere of human knowledge.

It is perhaps not without significance that it was in Paris, where Thomas Aquinas had elaborated some seven centuries earlier his Christ-oriented Scholasticism, that Rudolf Steiner gave his first course on an Esoteric Christian Cosmology appropriate to the dawn of the new Age of Light. Schuré’s notes in French of the 18 lectures, published in French in 1928, constitute the only record of this course. They now appear for the first time in English translation in their entirety in book form, readily available to the modern student of the Science of the Spirit. ~R. M. Querido

An Esoteric Cosmology – Schmidt Number: S-1321 – THE BIRTH OF THE INTELLECT AND THE MISSION OF CHRISTIANITY. “It is only of recent times that the truths of occultism have been the subject of public lectures. Formerly, these truths were only revealed in secret societies, to those who had passed through certain degrees of initiation and had sworn to obey the laws of the Order through the whole of their life. Today, man is entering upon a very critical period. Occult truths are beginning to be disclosed to the public. In a matter of twenty years or so, a certain number of them will already be common knowledge. Why is this? The reason is that humanity is entering upon a new phase which it is the object of this lecture to explain..” ~Rudolf Steiner

1945 – Plutonium bomb dropped on Nagasaki – the 2nd act of genocide ordered for testing purposes by President Harry Truman

1954 – The 6.7 M earthquake shakes northern Algeria. At least 6,243 people were killed

1965 – Hurricane Betsy makes its second landfall near New Orleans, leaving 76 dead 12 billion dollars in damages

1974 – Richard Nixon resigned as President following the Watergate scandal

1976 – Death day of Mao Zadong

Zinniker Farm

Dear Friends – In a world in need of balance. We may often feel overwhelmed as individuals.  It’s easy to forget that we can join our resources together to create change. Mark and Petra Zinniker are working every day doing their part. Mark Zinniker is the third generation to work The Zinniker Family Farm – the oldest Biodynamic Farm in the United States.

https://www.patreon.com/zinnikerfarm

Zinniker Farm, like most small family owned farms need to be re-envisioned by the community, or, this important resource will not be here for future generations.

At this crucial point in time, when health and food security are paramount, we are undertaking a project to reinvent our relationship to the Family Farm. We need your support to make this progressive project a reality.

We are looking for 50 families, individuals or groups to co-create this new way of life for the farm. If you are interested in joining the conversation, we’d love to hear from you. You can join here: Email Sign Up

Our starting point for this conversation is this question: How can we as a community support a viable succession plan so the young farmer of the future can thrive?

https://www.patreon.com/zinnikerfarm

The Biodynamic methods that they foster are a holistic, highly nutritional, ethical approach to farming. This Spiritual Scientific method treats soil fertility, plant growth, and livestock care as ecologically interrelated tasks.

Biodynamic farming not only provides families with good healthy food, it offers a remedy for the healing and spiritualization of the Earth.

What’s missing? YOU!

The ideal of the CSA model as the name states is for Community to Support Agriculture, but in reality it is the famer that is supporting the community.

We as Community can bring the true ideal to life.

Zinniker Farm

Check out the website, www.zinnikerfarm.com  for more info on the 165 acre, diversified, certified organic farm – a true slice of Heaven on Earth.

Will you step up to help co-create a viable financial plan so that the oldest Biodynamic Farm in America can thrive, now, and into the future?

1919 – Opening of the 1st Waldorf School in Stuttgart “A Ceremony of Cosmic Order”

“We can accomplish our work only if we do not see it as simply a matter of intellect or feeling, but, in the highest sense, as a moral spiritual task. Therefore, you will understand why, as we begin this work today, we first reflect on the connection we wish to create from the very beginning between our activity and the spiritual worldsWith such a task, we must be conscious that we do not work only in the physical plane of living human beings.

In the last centuries, this way of viewing work has increasingly gained such acceptance that it is virtually the only way people see it. This understanding of tasks has made teaching what it is now and that the work before us should improve. Thus, we wish to begin our preparation by first reflecting upon how we connect with the spiritual powers in whose service and in whose name each one of us must work. I ask you to understand these introductory words as a kind of prayer to those powers who stand behind us with Imagination, Inspiration and Intuition as we take up this task.

It is our duty to see the importance of our work. We will do this if we know that this school is charged with a particular task. We need to make our thoughts very concrete; we need to form our thoughts so that we can be conscious that this school fulfills something special. We can do this only when we do not view the founding of this school as an everyday occurrence, but instead regard it as a ceremony held within Cosmic Order. In this sense, I wish, in the name of the good spirit whose task it is to lead humanity out of suffering and misery, in the name of this good spirit whose task it is to lead humanity to a higher level of development in education. I wish to give the most heartfelt thanks to this good spirit who has given our dear friend Mr. Molt the good thoughts to do what he has done for the further development of humanity at this time and in this place, and what he has done for the Waldorf School. We are united with him in feeling the greatness of the task and of the moment in which it is begun, and in feeling that this is a festive moment in Cosmic Order, he will be able to work in our midst with the necessary strength.

We wish to begin our work with this in mind. We wish to see each other as human beings brought together by karma, who will bring about, not something common, but something that, for those doing this work, will include the feeling of a festive Cosmic moment. ~Rudolf Steiner, ‘The Foundations of Human Experience’.

Days of Awe

Greetings friends on this Labor Day /New Moon/Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, (רֹאשׁ הַשָּׁנָה‎, literally “head of the year“) is the first of the High Holy Days or Yamim Noraim (Days of Awe), a two-day celebration that starts tonight at sunset, as the New Moon makes her way into the light. It weds seriousness with celebration & begins the 10 days of repentance that culminate in Yom Kippur. This festival is believed to be the anniversary of the creation of Adam & Eve, acknowledging their first actions toward the realization of humanity’s role in the world.

Jasper Johns

The 1st panel of the Foundation Stone Meditation asks us to ‘Practice Spirit Recalling.” Recognizing ancient traditions, we can renewal time honored themes that still apply today:

The New Year focuses our attention on themes of discernment, repentance, memory & the Divine presence in the world (The Shekinah). At the same time, Rosh Hashanah invites us to celebrate birth & creation on many levels. The liturgy suggests that Rosh Hashanah commemorates the creation of the world.

Family-oriented services often include a birthday cake for the world. Customs include sounding the shofar (a hollowed-out ram’s horn) & eating symbolic foods such as apples dipped in honey to emphasize the sweetness of starting the cycle of seasons once again; & round challah to remind us of the cycles of life.

What is your birthday wish for the world? Are you willing to personally practice themes like forgiveness, as you recall that the Divine essence is in all that lives? How can you bring sweetness into life – making everyday a ‘Day of Awe’ – pulsing with reverence & wonder? How are YOUR thoughts, words, deeds, adding to the re-creation of the world?

Rudolf Steiner’s Lectures on this day

ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

Deathday of Albinus a Platonist philosopher, who lived at Smyrna, pupil of Gaius the Platonist & teacher of Galen.  A short tract by him, entitled Introduction to Plato’s dialogues, has survived. After explaining the nature of the Dialogue, which he compares to a Drama, he  goes on to divide the Dialogues of Plato into four classes, logical, critical, physical, ethical, & mentions another division of them into Tetralogies, according to their subjects. He advises that the Alcibiades, Phaedo, Republic, & Timaeus, should be read in a series

1080 – Deathday of Magnus of Füssen, a missionary saint in southern Germany, also known as the Apostle of the Allgäu, a contemporary of Saint Gall & Saint Boniface

1522 – The Victoria, the only surviving ship of Ferdinand Magellan’s expedition, returns to Spain, becoming the first ship to circumnavigate the world

1729 – Birthday of Moses Mendelssohn, a creative & eclectic thinker whose writings on metaphysics & aesthetics, political theory & theology, together with his Jewish heritage, placed him at the focal point of the German Enlightenment for over three decades

1847 – Henry David Thoreau leaves Walden Pond & moves in with Ralph Waldo Emerson & his family in Concord, Massachusetts

1860 – Birthday of Jane Addams, sociologist & author, Nobel Prize laureate – I have a soft spot for this powerful lady – I went to Jane Addams Jr. High & the Hull House museum is close to where I live in Chicago. Jane Addams life’s work still resonates in a big way today. Social worker, suffragette & activist are just some of the titles that apply to her. In 1889, Jane founded a social settlement called Hull House, which supported thousands of people each week – mainly immigrants, the poor & the dispossessed. It became a model for similar communities in the future.

Jane studied medicine as a young adult but decided that wasn’t her calling. She was inspired during a trip to London when she visited the world’s first settlement house, Toynbee Hall. Within months, she opened the doors to a similar facility in her hometown of Chicago.

Originally conceived to give immigrants & the poor access to the arts, Hull House evolved according to the community’s needs. Along the way, Jane also challenged corrupt local officials, investigated health issues and lobbied against unfair laws.

Jane was way ahead of her time, a person who was making inquiries & putting her money where her mouth was into figuring out enormous social problems. She made a lot of progress in ways that are still really resonant. The legacy started at Hull House lives on, from juvenile courts & labor laws to playgrounds & public sanitation. The Mother of Social Work set a standard for how to help others.

All are Welcome
