1. Rudolf Steiner spoke in greater detail about no longer giving private interviews in the third lecture of GA 177:

   “In principle, I shall no longer continue to give private interviews to members of the Anthroposophical Society. For all those private interviews have led to reports which are full of lies. I have better things to do than refute the tales told by people who let their imaginations run riot, and so there is no other way but to discontinue these private interviews. Some individuals have a true esoteric impulse, and I will find other ways of making sure they are able to progress; it will just take while. The measure should not prevent anyone from progressing in esoteric development. But, generally speaking, all private interviews must now stop. This, then, is the first rule. Do not come to me, as people have done in some local groups, and say it is a harsh rule. No, do not come to me, go to those who are responsible.

   The second thing is that I release everyone who has ever had a private interview with me from the promise not to talk about it, if they wish to do so. Anyone can tell anything they like about what has happened or been said in those private interviews — that is, in so far as they wish to do so. I am not going to prevent anyone from
   telling the whole truth about anything ever discussed with me in a private interview.

   These two rules go together. The one does not apply without the other. And, as I said, if you think they are harsh, go to those who are responsible. Unless I am less lenient in these matters than I have been until now, the problems I am speaking of will not stop. As I said, I shall find other ways to make sure this does not harm anyone’s esoteric development. Ways and means will be found. But, people being as they are today, it is not possible to establish such a science without things going badly astray on occasion, with people always jumping to the wrong conclusions. This is why there will have to be these rules.

   People who take a serious and dignified approach to our spiritual-scientific development may find it difficult to understand how such things could come about, but they will accept the two rules as inevitable. From now on, everything will be entirely in the open. For there is nothing there which needs to shun the light! This is what is so shameful about it all: The truth and the whole truth could be told by everybody without leaving the least stain on our movement. But people have grown attached to something which has survived in our work as a continuation of earlier practices: to have individual interviews. If talking to individuals had not resulted in lies, the rule would not have been necessary. But everything ever said to any member can be truthfully told. Our movement can only gain from the truth — go and tell as much as you like. The truth will not be affected by the lies which are told; but it must not even appear to be affected, for it is important for humanity that anything presented out of a background of spiritual science is presented in a serious and dignified way.

   So let me repeat once more: Without causing any loss to those who are seriously seeking esoteric development, I will generally no longer give private interviews for members. Everyone is free to tell everything they want about the interviews which have been given, but it must be the truth. I release everyone from whatever vow of silence there may be. But it should only be because individuals want to tell others for their own sake; they do not have to do it for my sake. And I have no objection to people spreading it about far and wide that these rules exist and are characteristic of our movement. Then the world will realize the infamous nature of the things that are so often said, especially about our Society.” 1 October 1917

   1. Her visage now in the West boggles the mind – how can it be that she is sooo big & bright, I have never experienced her in this way, it’s almost like some other enity that everyone is saying in Venus (occult Mercury)

      1. Yes, and it is going to get better until July! This is what was written this week on the USNO site:

         “Brilliant Venus is now reaching her highest position relative to the horizon for the current evening apparition. She dominates the western sky as evening twilight fades to darkness. She is now crossing the stars of Gemini, seemingly in hot pursuit of Mars. By the end of the month she will be about ten degrees west of Mars, and throughout June she will slowly inch closer to the red planet as both objects move through Cancer and Leo. However, Venus won’t quite catch up to the ruddy world, and during June and July they will both start inching closer to the Sun.”

3. You write: 1917 – Rudolf Steiner releases his pupils from any obligations to silence previously required.
   Can you elaborate on what this release from confidentiality refers to?
   There was a duty of confidentiality in the ES and FM. This work was stopped in 1914 with the beginning of WWI, but I have never heard that the members were explicitly released from the obligation of secrecy. I also know that most members of the ES guarded the acanum and members of the FM guarded it even more strictly. Even after 1918, even the existence of the FM was kept silent until a newspaper article by a former member of the FM and later opponent of Steiner spoke about it. There were even members of the leadership of the Society in Germany who did not know about the existence of the FM and asked Steiner incredulously if the newspaper article was true. He replied in substance (I do not have the exact wording in my head): Yes that is true, we had a FM work, but we do not want to talk about it.
   Therefore again my question: To what does the release from the obligation of secrecy refer?

      I have ammended what I posted to read:
      1917 – Rudolf Steiner stops giving private consultations & releases his pupils from any obligations to silence around what they recevied as meditative advice etc. which was previously required.

      1. The lecture from GA 177, in which the cessation of private interviews is reiterated by RS, is really more of a rant, and Steiner goes off on a tangent that is targeted against President Woodrow Wilson. It is very much worth reading. In one place, he gives the essence of his position, and it is related to Martin Luther:

         “People may, for instance, write volumes in the way in which I have contradicted myself in my written works and with reference to all kinds of other things. One way of countering this would be to say that Luther was shown to have contradicted himself in hundreds of ways, not just a few dozen. His answer was: These asses are talking of contradictions in my works. I wish they would make the effort to try and understand just one of the things that appears to be in contradiction to other things! So one way would be to point out something like this. But there is no need for this. For when people speak in opposition today it is not because they are interested in finding and revealing contradictions but for quite a different reason.”

         1917 was the 400th anniversary of when Martin Luther tacked up those 95 theses in offense of the church at Wittenberg. Thus, Steiner was filled with this kind of fervor. The private interviews would be honored again after the end of the war, and especially so after the fire that destroyed the Goetheanum.

4. You probably knew you’d get some feedback when you made this statement: ” The ancient, traditional glyphs of the zodiac are not longer effective.”

   I find the opposite true. With the newer, lavishly-colored glyphs I find that someone else has done the imagining in our place, and sometimes it fits with my own imagination, but most often not. I’m not sure which ancient glyphs you’re referring to, but the ones I’m thinking of leaves the imagining up to the individual. I’ve had some rich insights come through as a result of the bare-bones structure of the ancient glyphs, especially when my imagination sees the glyphs in three dimensions, rather than the flat two dimensions we generally see them as on paper. Two-dimensional representations can drain an image of much of its vitality. Just as in philosophy, we must be willing to make the leap from the Spirits of Form to the next higher level of the hierarchies, the Spirits of Movement (Human and Cosmic Thought, GA 151, Lect. 1).

      I agree that we need to become the artists using our own free imaginations when working with these beings.

         He etched in roman numeral the dates of the Sun’s actual movement through these twelve signs. This is important as a visual representation. The 13th in the middle comes from another source. Maybe Hazel?
