Star chart of Cepheus the King

16 March 2022 – “Speaking with the Stars”: Whether you’re up early or late today, there’s a tempting target in the north: the variable star Delta Cephei in Cepheus the King. This bright star sits east of Zeta Cephei, which marks the lower righthand (southeastern) corner of the house-shaped constellation.

Johanna von Keyserlingk & the Etheric Christ

Humanity is ripe for ‘the Christ experience’ like what Paul experienced outside Damascus. Johanna von Keyserlingk, the hostess of the conference in Koberwitz in 1924 where biodynamic agriculture was born, was also the hostess of powerful spiritual observations.

In her memoirs she describes how while walking with her governess in the Vienna Woods in 1887, as an 8-year-old girl of noble birth, she meets a thin, 26-year-old man, with dark hair & powerful eyes, who looks at her with a penetrating gaze. This meeting lives & works in her until, at the end of the 1st World War, as a 39-year-old Countess, she meets a 56-year-old man. She had already attended 2 of his lectures & read some of his books. After this meeting she is able to speak with him in private. He asks her where she was at the age of 8. After some thought, she remembers the place – Breslau, where she lived then. But he shakes his head, apparently he means something else with his question. Johanna has more conversations with him & six months later he repeats the question. Then she suddenly remembers the young man in the Vienna Woods who had looked at her with such wonderful eyes. This man was, of course, Rudolf Steiner.

On March 26, 1879, on the threshold of the beginning of the new Michael era, Johanna was born in Brno. Her father, which she described as a true despot, was the son of Scottish nobility -Karl von Skene. He went to Silesia via Austria & married her future mother, Klara Schoeller, who came from a family of industrialists. Together with 3 brothers (Karl, Philipp & Robert) she lived near her father’s estates.

Her clairvoyant powers were revealed early on, which was not unusual in her father’s Celtic line. These experiences made her both lonely & independent at an early age. She often sought comfort in nature, in the park near ancient trees, & there she had contact with the elemental spirits.

About this time she wrote: “I remember very well that as a small child I could look at the window between the bars of my bed and see the sun rise in the morning and that I experienced the sun as what other children see as their mother and father. I remember also, that the other children I played with often chased me, especial the time when I correctly predicted the death of an adult as if it were self-evident. However, when I noticed that not even my mother saw what I perceived spiritually, I kept silent.”

At the end of her teens, she became involved with Kant’s philosophy; with Angelus Silesius & with the poet Hölderlin. In 1899 when she was 21 years old, she married Count Carl Wilhelm von Keyserlingk, & had 3 boys: Wolfgang (1900), & a boy (1902) who soon died, & Adalbert (1905). They went to live in Klettendorff, not far from Breslau. Later this became the castle Koberwitz (1920), partly on the advice of Steiner.

Because of her devoted son Adalbert, most of the memoirs & notes were made public, but only after Johanna died at the age of 87. With intimate friends such as Rudolf Meyer (who lived in Koberwitz for 3 years), Emil Bock, Friedrich Rittelmeyer, Eliza von Moltke, Margarita Woloschina & Monica von Miltitz, she did share her experiences & her confidential conversations with Steiner during her life.

When she was 28, Johanna went thru a painful phase in her life. She was sick in bed due to an entopic pregnancy, which almost killed her. What she experienced was that some sort of strange individuality wanted to incarnate in her.

“When I had been given up by the doctors and felt that my life force was leaving me, I suddenly saw a shining figure next to the bed, from which a penetrating force emanated.”

And the first words she was able to speak after this experience were:

“Me and my house want to serve the Lord; for I have experienced what the captain of Capernaum experienced.” ( ~Matthew 8:5-10 ‘And when Jesus entered Capernaum, a centurion came to Him, imploring Him, 6 and saying, “Lord, my servant is lying paralyzed at home, fearfully tormented.” 7Jesus said to him, “I will come and heal him.” 8 But the centurion said, “Lord, I am not worthy for You to come under my roof, but just say the word, and my servant will be healed. 9“For I also am a man under authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to this one, ‘Go!’ and he goes, and to another, ‘Come!’ and he comes, and to my slave, ‘Do this!’ and he does it.” 10 Now when Jesus heard this, He marveled and said to those who were following, “Truly I say to you, I have not found such great faith with anyone in Israel. 11“I say to you that many will come from east and west, and recline at the table with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven; 12 but the sons of the kingdom will be cast out into the outer darkness; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” 13And Jesus said to the centurion, “Go; it shall be done for you as you have believed.” And the servant was healed that very moment’. )

“When I heard from the doctors that there was no more salvation for me, which I had already experienced myself, I knew: now I will reach the goal of my life, the Christ. Either in death or in the spirit world. White starlight was around me, and I was thinking of the fevered son of Capernaum’s chieftain. Science dawned on me: when you now see the Christ, he can also restore earth life to you. There were energies buzzing next to me and a fire figure appeared next to my bed. Such strength emanated from him that I believed I could not bear it. It was like over-tensioning the atmosphere because of the pressing of the ether. I felt as if that would tear me apart and heard the words: Go, your faith has helped you …

It was a very white silence around me, and glittering life entered me from there. The pains were gone. The doctor came and assumed that this condition was agony. But life continued to shine, and when my husband asked what had happened, I could only say that in the New Testament he had to seek out the healing of Capernaum. As of this hour, there was only a common solution for us. Me and my house want to serve the Lord. My illness was gone and life took a different direction. But as bright was the light that I had seen, so dark was the time I had to live in the following years. It was like I was going to die. For years now I had experienced the terrible of death in all phases.”

Her next trial was that her brow bone, just above the root of the nose, literally shattered. Years later, bone splinters that had grown out had to be removed using tweezers. With the forehead chakra released in this radical way, her clairvoyant experiences increased in number & intensity.

She asked herself: What is expressed in this event? Perhaps people who were associated with Christ on earth had a role to play in preparing for His return in the etheric, starting in the 20th century; a karmic bond that is revealed in this time of the Second Coming. Rudolf Steiner talked about the youth of Nain, who was raised from the dead by Christ & so was initiated into a task for the future of humanity. Steiner also pointed out the connection between the resurrected Lazarus John & the teacher of humanity, Christian Rosenkreutz. This is also the time when Steiner describes Christ becoming the Lord of karma.

At the ‘Turning Point of Time’ the apostles gathered by Christ were the 1st to be inaugurated into this new impulse, there must be anthroposophers starting in the 30’s & into our time now that are able to receive the inspiration of Christ, now as Lord of Karma. Anthroposophy wants to be a movement of people who work to restore their karma.

Steiner tells us: Spiritual science “imposes enormous responsibility upon us, for it prepares for the concrete event of the reappearance of Christ.” It is known that Steiner took actual people as examples for some of the characters in his mystery dramas. Perhaps Johanna was the model for Theodora?

According to Steiner, Johanna had an awakened consciousness that would become normal perhaps a 1000 years in the future! Perhaps this ‘premature birth’ was what caused her so much pain in her life…? And yet, Steiner called the figure next to the sick bed of Johanna the Christ power.

In one of the conversations with Steiner, he also warned that Johanna was facing great Luciferic dangers, but that she had special qualities  – the iron of Mars, that could protect her from this. He called her ‘the Iron Countess’.

In 1915, Johanna started to write down a series of imaginations  that she received. This lead to a book that describes the fortunes of a grail knight going through a mental training: the was named book ‘Gralburg’ (Grail Castle). In the preface she writes:

In these imaginations my own experience in full reality passes by. It is lived more real than earthly events are experienced. As the images are there, that’s how I experienced them. Often the images and words sounded strange and inexplicable, I did not understand them and I do not understand much of them nowadays, but I could not change anything, because I wanted to stay with the truth. Often the end of an image was added as an explanation only after years. Real spirit beings met the spirit student, and they addressed him in real words. These spiritual words have actually been spoken to him.

As far as I can judge, these things have lived in the astral. The astral, however, takes place in the interior of the earth in the direction of midnight. This astral is invisible in itself and fine visible form force expresses itself in the periphery of the earth, in the ether world. That which happens invisibly in the depths, is imprinted in the ether and comes to visibility, and what I saw there I wrote down.

This book cannot be judged by a literary standard. I wrote it down for myself and I don’t feel the need for others to read it. If it were just me, I would put it in a desk drawer; and then it can be read after my death or not. And when I am asked now, yes, why do you spend it anyway, then I can only answer – not for my sake, but so that the others hear of the figure so lovingly striding through the hall.

‘Imagine a fine brilliance of tender sunlight
flowing from his soul
Imagine a pair of warm eyes, so full of love
that you start to glow, and you kneel
Imagine a mouth from which truth springs
as if from a deep source the deity itself arises,
it sounds so beautiful, that forever
you would like to listen to this voice in reverence.

Imagine his hands caressing your hair
with a gesture that heals all suffering.
Yes, under their light springs the new life we seek!
Imagine a ruler striding like this
and highest heavenly threads are for him
and where his foot goes is light
that shows us the right way.
Do you see his garment shining from afar
then the fire starts to burn in your heart,
it is so beautiful that you cannot comprehend it.

And he sees your suffering
and he approaches you
which makes your heart completely still.
And gently, like the song of angelic children,
the air that blows towards you is so lovely.

You can put your head on his knee in quiet humility
and deep peace comes into you.
The sun radiates from his holy body
and sun flows over your mind,
and you see jubilantly in the golden distance,
your homeland, where he draws you’.

At the end of this ‘hymn’ her footnote : “At the sight of the Nazarene standing before me, written down in a short moment”.

Through the book: “Koberwitz 1924, Geburtsstunde einer neuen Landwirtschaft, moment of birth of a new agriculture”, many people learn the name of the Keyserlingk family. At the time, Koberwitz was an estate owned by the family, near Breslau.

At Pentecost in 1924, a gathering took place there in the penultimate year before Rudolf Steiner’s untimely death, to which many attendees have fond memories. From the descriptions of the different souls you can get the feeling that there was a true cosmopolitan Pentecostal Spirit. As the title of the book indicates, this was also the time & place where the birth of bio-dynamic agriculture happened.

Yes, a lot happened there in the days of June 7-17, 1924. For example, it was the first time the Whitsun Epistle was pronounced at the altar, during the Christian Community Service (established 2 years earlier). The impression arises that in Koberwitz a successful meeting between the royal & the priestly streams took place. In total there were 120 people, many with an agricultural background, but also many others who attended, for example, there were evening lectures on karma & the Eurythmy performances, that attracted folks such as Eliza von Moltke, Rittelmeyer, Bock, Wachsmuth, Koschützki, Marie Steiner, Vreede & many others. So these days were busy with all kinds of activities. It was later discovered that at night Steiner wrote whole parts of his autobiography, which appeared shortly afterwards in the weekly Das Goetheanum & were later compiled into his biography; he also received & answered countless mail correspondences.

In addition to esoteric hours, in the evening, a large number of people had personal conversations with Steiner. With all this work, it was surprising to many that Steiner, who made an extremely tired impression on arrival, gradually became more vital. From those 12 special days around Dr. Steiner arose many personal memories from the participants.

Here’s a good example of ‘how karma works’. In principle, the course was only intended for people with an agricultural background. And yet, Young Wilhelm Rath, as one of the initiators of the youth movement, passed by Koberwitz to deliver some notes by Walter Johannes Stein, in which he describes his own spiritual experiences, for Rudolf Steiner. The post-office was not appropriate for such personal documents, so WJ Stein asked Rath to hand them over personally. Because of this, Rath was then allowed to attend the entire Agricultural course, although Wachsmuth was worried at 1st about breaking the rules. This later turns out to be an important turning point in Rath’s career.

The book Koberwitz 1924 not only gives a nice impression of the conference but also of Johanna herself. We read that she played a harmonium for the guests, that she & her husband were the perfect hosts, & that she personally took care of the flowers & plants in the castle park. The Staff loved her. A chambermaid, who also wrote a contribution in the book heaped praises on her.

A life motto for the Count & Countess was: Founding places of love and peace, where the Christ can be resurrected – this was engraved on a memorial for Steiner after he died.

She described to Steiner, the image of a fairytale-like white mosque with a minaret & she heard the word Bosphorus. According to her, this was the answer to a question she had been dealing with for a long time.

Later on at Christmas 1925, after Steiner had died, she had severe pneumonia while in Sonnenhof in Arlesheim, where Ita Wegman nursed her. There, Mieta Waller asked her if she could use her clairvoyance to help find the Palladium in Constantinople. After all, legend tells that Emperor Constantine buried the Palladium under a large column. This question was the start of a long search that would be continued by her son Adalbert.

The Palladium has been called the greatest solar gem on Earth by Steiner, & world evolution depends on whether this underground sun-sanctuary is illuminated by “the sun of the west” – the new light of human thought. A truly cryptic description! Especially since Steiner also indicated that it would be an actual object buried somewhere. The comparison can then be made between the physically present cup of the last supper & the transcendent grail.

She made a trip to Constantinople, to Hagia Sophia & experienced all kinds of things that are described in her diary, including that she had seen this mosque in the image of a ghost. Physical indications & images not yet understood alternated. However, the Palladium was not found. It is questionable whether the Palladium might have been found spiritually. However, she said, this cannot be discussed it is “a question for the future”.

In the Achmedie Imperial Palace, she received gruesome images inscribed in the ether of the Council of Constantinople in 869 AD., where she recognized ahrimanic inspirations. Steiner often spoke of this council where the “spirit” of the human being was abolished. Here she experienced what Steiner called a second Golgotha, & the moment when the karma of humanity began to become disordered.

In Hagia Sophia, however, she experienced the luminous presence of Christ & of Michael, like ‘the sunrise of a new dawn‘.

It is a risk when people make statements about what they consider to be their previous incarnations. It was not Johanna’s intention that her own research would be made public during her lifetime. She did, however, discuss it with Steiner & her son Adalbert. He decided to publish the notes after her death.

In 1922 she visited a forest in Rawitz where she had been as a child. “When I arrived, the spirits of the trees and shrubs on this familiar road back started to speak to me, to my surprise. But what they told me this time was not pleasant to me. They told me: “You are free now, you have to deliver us, we are bound to these trees.” And they added, I had tied them to this place myself in a past life. I said to them, “Your trees are not old at all, how can I have met you before?” But they answer: Our fathers were already here, and in them our spirits have inherited themselves. – You shouldn’t leave until you deliver us”.

It is then explained to her how she could accomplish this salvation by making 3 crosses on the trunk while invoking the Father, Son & Holy Spirit. So she does this & from each one a strip of light is released, which then, according to her observation, dissolves in the light of Christ.

Shortly before this, she had images of a man who lived several hundred years ago, who loved to be in nature & had conversations with nature spirits. She had the impression that the man was also involved in magic. He spoke to her : “I am glad that you are here, I have also come to see you. You must carry on with the work that I have begun. I will show you what happened here, and you must then free what I have banned. “

It is characteristic of Johanna that she told Steiner this kind of experience. She was not yet sure about the meaning. Steiner confirmed that this man with faustic traits was a previous incarnation of hers, & that he had banished the elemental beings to the trees. That is why she now had to free them herself.

In an earlier conversation where Eliza von Moltke was also present, Steiner had said, “The countess once experienced that earth life is spiritual death.”

A central theme with Johanna that she always discussed with Steiner (she has about 28 sessions with him) is Shamballah or the golden land, as she calls it. She lived into the moment when the blood of Christ flowed into the earth initiating a new solar globe. She saw out of the earth’s core, a golden fire in the earth’s depth. Like Ptolemy she called this the primal sun. This connected her with Empedocles who plunged into the fire of Mount Etna.

She described it in the following way in a question to Steiner: “…originally there was the fire and the light. These lived together in a deep harmony. Then the light rejected the power of the fire, and the smoke, which could no longer rise in the light, returned and covered the fire, and so the primeval fire was covered with a layer of ash. This axis is the mineral of the Earth. At first people saw through it to their primal home, the primal sun, but the earth became more and more dense and the smoke darkened more and more. Man seemed to be separated from the primeval sun (which is paradise) by the mineral layer. With this primeval sun which has been revived by the Christ, man must try to unite again.”

Steiner confirmed to her that this primordial sun is also the land of Shamballah, where the initiates of all time took their inspiration and what will become visible to all people in the future. It is closely related to the etheric second coming of the Christ & His work on a new heaven & a new earth in which people must play an active role.

Steiner spoke fondly of the Iron Count & Countess, he called them that, not only because the Koberwitz land which was iron rich. He wanted Johanna to conquer & free her clairvoyance with her iron will, which was linked to her innate clairvoyance, & also from her dependence on Steiner’s influence.

Before she met Steiner, Johanna had a life where everything came to her. Spiritual guidance had provided for her fortunes. But this would change soon. They were able to remain in Koberwitz for only 4 years after 1924. A movement started immediately on several fronts, reinforced after Steiner’s death in 1925, that came to destroy the new bio-dynamic impulse. The fertilizer industry, including IG Farben, felt threatened by this new healing art. They wanted to buy the copyright describing the agricultural course for a large sum of money. But Count Carl declined, partly because he wanted to test it in practice before the course content was published. In the company where Carl worked with several co-owners, tensions grew & he had to leave the field in 1928. They also left Koberwitz. Shortly after, he died en route to Dornach. According to Johanna because of a broken heart.

Not much is known about her life after that, except that it was difficult. In 1941 she was captured by the Gestapo, & put under interrogation for days. She saw a figure next to the German officer. But she was not tempted to give in to this demonic being.

After 1945 she could no longer stay in Poland & fled to the west where she ended up in Stuttgart, completely destitute & incognito. In 1949 the book Koberwitz was published as a private edition. In the years before her death she went blind.

Just before this book went to press, she also wrote about Kaspar Hauser, & about her struggle to keep a relationship with Steiner in the spiritual world after his death:While during the life of Rudolf Steiner one could still live in the sphere of his personal closeness without great effort, it was no longer possible after his death. After the death hour of 1925, there were still encounters in the astral for me. But I think that this is happening more and more at a distance. Was the atmosphere of the earth obscured by what was preparing for threats there in Germany? We were alone, as if deserted. It was as if there was an impenetrable dark night in the otherwise bright atmosphere”.

This shows how difficult it was to hold the Pentecostal substance of Koberwitz in the dark period that was holding sway. After his death she wrote:.

“It was on the morning of Rudolf Steiner’s cremation, which I did not go to. The teacher’s body was still laid out in his studio, where the aura of the beloved teacher appeared next to me. I was told to write. I took paper and pen and the following words came from his presence. Often I could not write quickly enough, then paused and waited until I was back, as Rudolf Steiner used to do when he dictated to me.

“My job has ended….What I could give, the people who were ready for it…I am going, because I found no ears that could hear the spiritual word behind the word…I am going, because I found no eyes that could see the ghosts behind the earth images…I go because I found no people who could realize my will…The mysteries remain hidden until I come back. I will come back and reveal the mysteries when I have succeeded in creating an altar, a cultic place for human souls, in spirit worlds. Then I’ll come back. Then I will continue to reveal the mysteries.”

“Those are to blame for my death, which have held back the culture of the heart. Had people pushed through their hearts into the depths, they would have found the strength for the challenges of this time.”

There are many Anthroposophers who do not consider these statements to come from Steiner but rather see them as a projection from Johanna herself, or from the adversarial forces trying to cloud the message.

We do know that Rudolf Steiner is able to teach his students from the spirit body, as indicated in the mystery dramas.

I will end with this short conversation with Steiner in 1924, before his death:

Johanna: “Mankind is spoiled anyway [miscarriages]“. Steiner: “Yes, you can say that.” Johanna: “But what will happen at the end of the century?” Steiner in despair: “I don’t know either – but Ahriman is also part of Christ.”

May we all find the “The Way, the Truth & the Life…& work to purify ourselves, to be a fit vessel for the Christ, & for the work of embodying Anthroposophia

Our approach to astrology is informed and inspired by Rudolf Steiner’s indications found sprinkled throughout his six thousand lectures, as it has been developed by a small group of astrosophers over several decades. This deeper understanding of, and interaction with, the heavens is based on:

  • A sidereal (star-based) view of the heavens, emphasizing the active and dynamic role of the beings working from stars and constellations
  • Equal length zodiacal signs (relating to the lineage of Zarathustra), equal houses, and recognizing the Earth’s role and significance to the birth chart
  • Anthroposophy (thus called astrosophy, with its particular guidance for understanding the beings indwelling the zodiacal and planets)
  • Identifying and working with spiritual themes in our lives in a way made practical by the research of Robert Powell, and the indications of cosmic Christianity, as understood through Anthroposophy.
  • And other features that we will teach.

Some topics that we will cover:

  • New and traditional methods for interpreting a birth chart
  • Zodiacal constellations in the birth chart
  • Understanding the meaning in the patterns of the moving planets
  • Planetary aspects in the birth chart
  • The important role of the twelve equal houses, in the birth chart
  • How transiting planets interplay in the time-stream of life, presenting challenges and opportunities
  • Determining the time of conception and its own chart
  • The care necessary to regard the information of a person’s sacred birth moment with reverence and understanding
  • The importance of understanding reincarnation and karma for human development
  • The journey between death and rebirth, and why that is important for human destiny
  • Human Life phases: the 7-year periods of our life biography and the relation of those periods to the planetary spheres
  • The role of self-development for a practitioner of New Astrology

Her studies have included an undergraduate degree in fine art and graduate work in psychology using the arts for healing.  In her private practice, she developed various energetic modalities. Spear of Destiny

Darla Frankel

“Intelligence” is not the decisive factor; our current intellect is present also in those who commit the greatest follies. Intelligence is therefore not lacking. What is lacking is sufficiently matured experience of events. As soon as the intelligence lays something down which appears plausible to its narrow limited experience it can come into disharmony with the real outward events and then the outer events break down around it. For there is a relationship between the physical body and the world which the human being will gradually learn to recognise and grasp with the forces which he possesses today already. But he will only be able to do this once he has accrued and assimilated the experiences of the outside world. Then the harmony which will have developed as a result of this experience will have been created by no other intellect than the one we have today; for it is precisely in the present that our intellect has developed to a certain stage. The only thing lacking is the ripening of experience. If the maturing of experience does not correspond to the outside then the human being becomes disharmonious with the outside world and can be broken on events in the outer world. ” ~Rudolf Steiner GA 59 – Metamorphoses of the Soul – Paths of Experience Vol. 2: Lecture 5 – Sickness and Healing – Berlin, 3rd March 1910

Sirius in Canis Major offers observing challenges day and night. The Big Dipper balances Cassiopeia. And the gibbous Moon occults a Leo star.

15 March 2022 – “Speaking with the Stars”: The bright waxing gibbous Moon shines in the Sickle of Leo as darkness falls. The Moon is roughly between Regulus lower right of it and Algieba, slightly fainter, left of it.

42 BC – The assassination of Julius Caesar takes place

Feast Day of St. Longinus – Christian legend has it that Longinus was a blind Roman centurion who thrust the spear into Christ’s side at the crucifixion. Some of Jesus’s blood fell upon his eyes & he was healed. The Golden Legend says that he saw celestial signs before conversion. Thru this miracle Longinus believes in The Christ. The story related in the Gospel of John, is that Longinus calls Jesus was ‘The son of God’. Because of this he is considered the first Christian convert. The name Longinus is found in the Acts of Pilate, a text appended to the apocryphal Gospel of Nicodemus.

Longinus did not start out as a saint. An early tradition, found in a sixth or seventh century claims that Longinus suffered for having pierced Jesus – he was condemned to a cave where every night a lion came & mauled him until dawn, after which his body healed back to normal, in a pattern that would repeat till the end of time.

Starting in the 6AD the “Lance of Longinus”, gets connected with the “Holy Lance” or the “Spear of Destiny”, which then figures in the legends of the Holy Grail.

Feast of St. Christopher, bearer of Christ – The name Christopher from the Greek means “bearer of Christ.” Derived from the Greek Christophoros – Various legends surround his life. The most popular is that he was a rather ugly, giant born to a heathen king who was married to a Christian, who had prayed to the Blessed Mother for a child. Originally named “Offerus,” he carried people across the river for his livelihood. He converted from paganism through the teaching of a hermit, named “Babylas.”

Again according to legend, one day one of his passengers to cross the river was a small child. As they proceeded, the child kept growing heavier, and Christopher feared that they would drown. The child then revealed Himself as Jesus, and the heaviness was due to the weight of the world that He carried on His shoulders.

According to the Roman Martyrology, he suffered martyrdom during the persecution of Emperor Decius by being shot with arrows after surviving burning.

The “Christ bearer” is the patron saint of travelers. (medals of St. Christopher & car medallions or pins are used by the faithful.) He is one of the “Fourteen Holy Helpers.”

1319 – Founding of the Order of the Knights of Our Lord Jesus Christ (Ordem dos Cavaleiros de Nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo), was the former Knights Templar order as it was reconstituted in Portugal after the Templars were abolished on 22 March 1312 by the papal bull, Vox in excelso, issued by Pope Clement V1917 abdication of Czar Nicholas 2.

Join us for an exploration, based on spiritual science and star wisdom, into the following themes:

This course, to train practitioners in Star Wisdom will take place in the StarHouse June 2022. It is designed to train beginners who are willing to ride a steep learning-curve, and long-time astrologers.

Our teaching weaves experiential activities (embodiment) and conceptual learning so you learn it more thoroughly.

On-line too: The course will also be on-line (live-streamed, interactive). A manager on our end will coordinate actively with those attending via Zoom, including relaying questions to the presenters for comment. (We plan that the event will be filmed and edited, and parts of it made available as a course through our website.)

Currently she is the editor of the newsletters for the Eurythmy Association of North America and the Association of Therapeutic Eurythmy in North America.

An Impulse for the Future

Today – March 14th is a very active day according to Rudolf Steiner’s original Calendar of the Soul. It’s Pi day & Albert Einstein’s birthday & other important individualities in world history. The spirit of Marie Steiner-von Sivers has been very present for me as of late, & today is her birthday – And so in honor of this Slavic soul, the co-creator of Anthroposophy, I felt called to let her bring the leading thoughts for this day. – The quote I will share comes from an Introduction that she wrote after Rudolf Steiner’s death, in 1947 when she published ‘AN IMPULSE FOR THE FUTURE, GA 252 given by Rudolf Steiner when endowing a Society for Theosophy and Theosophical Art on 15 December of 1911. Rudolf Steiner Verlag, Haus Duldeck, CH-4143 Dornach. The introduction by Frau Dr. Steiner was entitled: “The Life in the Anthroposophical Society from the First World War to the Burning of the First Goetheanum”

And I think we can all agree that The future is now, so let us hear these words from Marie Steiner-von Sivers:

“Considering the difficulties of the times Rudolf Steiner continually placed indications for later activity in our souls, seeds for the future, which, after the soul’s sleep has been overcome can unfold with life. Through the hectic every-day life they are often spoiled or grasped, and then swept away by the mix of events. Among the souls who could accept these seeds of the future, surely there were some who were able to find new life because of them; but also there were those who – like the hard ground in the Gospel parable – could not benefit from them…Rudolf Steiner tried, not only by means of philosophy and science, art and spirituality, to lead us to freedom, but also through teaching within esoteric life, so that the old relation of dependence on the teacher would gradually develop into the impulse for freedom and responsibility to the spirit. Souls which consider themselves anchored in spirit, must pass a trial. Such a self-desired trial always calls forth an accelerated karma also what is gladly hidden from the self must be revealed./ Rudolf Steiner stressed that the content of this lecture be completely independent of all those he had previously given. It was, so to speak, a direct message from the spiritual world. It was a call delivered to humanity – followed by waiting to see what echo resulted. Such a call happens as a rule three times. If the call also remains unheard the third time, it is taken back to the spiritual world for a long time. The call was already sent to humanity once, unfortunately it found no echo. With every fruitless attempt, the conditions and relations become more difficult. This lecture was the second time. It concerns purely spiritual things. According to the notes “My dear friends” is how he began.

To my knowledge the lecture referred to has not been translated into English. If someone has it in English please share!?!

We can certainly know that the 3rd call came at the Christmas Conference.

Friends, The Time is at hand – the Future is Now – Now as we stand in the midst of the centennial of the Re-founding of the Anthroposophical Society. Will we hear it?

Here is a recording of a biography of Marie Steiner-von Sivers for Applied Anthroposophy.

A description of Marie Steiner von Sivers as seen in the character of Maria from the Mystery Dramas:

“Within our circle a knot forms – Out of threads which Karma spins in world-becoming. Maria, all the things you suffer – Are parts within a knot of fate – In which heavenly powers – Are linked with human life.

When in life’s pilgrimage I had attained – That rank which granted me the dignity – To serve with counsel in the spirit-spheres, A godlike Being did draw near to me, Who wished to descend into the realms of earth, And dwell there, veiled in form of flesh, as a human being. For just at this turning-point of time The Karma of humankind made this demand.

For each great step in world-development – Is only possible when Gods do stoop – To link themselves with human destiny. And this new spirit-sight that must grow – And germinate now in souls of human beings – Can only be unfolded when a God – Plants a seed within some human heart.

My task it was to find that human soul – Which worthy, could take within itself – That powerful Seed of God. I had to join – The deed of heaven to some human lot. My spirit’s eye then sought, and fell on you. Your course of life had fitted you to be – The mediator in salvation’s work.

Through many former lives you had acquired – Receptiveness for all the greatest things – That human hearts can experience. Within your tender soul you did bring forth, As spirit heritage, the noble gift – Of beauty, joined to virtue’s loftiest claim: And that which your eternal Self had formed – And brought to being through your birth on earth – Did reach ripe fruitage when your years were few. —

And such a soul alone was I to choose – As mediator for the God, who sought – The power to work within our human world. And now you have learned that your nature must – Transform itself into its opposite, When it flows forth to other human souls. The spirit in you ripens whatsoe’er – In human nature can attain the realm – Of vast eternity; and much it slays – Which is of transitory realms. – And yet the sacrifices of such deaths – Are but the seeds of immortality; All that which blossoms forth from death below – Must grow into the higher life above.”
~Rudolf Steiner, from Scene 3 of ‘The Portal of Initiation’

RUDOLF STEINER’S CALENDAR OF THE SOUL
translated
with added titles by Roy Sadler
This week’s verse, leading to Friday’s penultimate full moon before Easter,
can be regarded as a climax, with the 7th mention of the heart and the 3rd of love,
their last appearance till next winter, the heart at the Solstice and love at Epiphany.
LENT III
Awakening Of Love
v48

In light, whose flowing from the heights
would be the world’s empowering of soul,
let shine the certainty of cosmic thought
that solves soul riddles
and focusing its radiance in human hearts
awakens love.

the mirror verse
Easter V
Soul Resurrection
v5

In light, whose fertile weaving into space
from depth of spirit is revealing
the splendour of the gods’ creating,
the being of the soul is shining, widening,
enlivened in the presence of the world
and resurrected
from narrow selfhood’s inner power.

These verses are part of the Light quartet. Here are 2 quotations via anthroposophyla.org/Calendar-of-the-Soul-Verse-48: from Eleanor Merry, re. v48, “Light, now more and more seen returning to Earth, awakens in our hearts highest love that does not permit uncertainty. With inner ears, we hear, “Have Light in yourselves, that you may become the children of Light”; and from Rudolf Steiner’s lecture to young doctors, Nov 30, 1919,
with every breath of air, we take not only air but also light into ourselves, and we transform this light within us and make it our own as we do any other substance: we digest it, we make it an integral part of our self.”

Rudolf Steiner’s Lectures on this day

ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

Antonio Molinari

Feast Day of Abigail (Hebrew “my father’s joy”) in 2 Samuel 17:25 She became a wife of David after Nabal’s death, & the mother of Daniel, one of David’s sons. Abigail is also listed as one of the seven Jewish women prophets.

1592 – Ultimate Pi Day: the largest correspondence between calendar dates & significant digits of pi since the introduction of the Julian calendar

1794 – Eli Whitney is granted a patent for the cotton gin

1879 – Birthday of Albert Einstein! (1879 the year Michael became the Time-Spirit)

1681 – Birthday of Georg Philipp Telemann, a German Baroque composer & multi-instrumentalist. Almost completely self-taught in music, he became a composer against his family’s wishes. He held important positions in Leipzig, Sorau, Eisenach,& Frankfurt before settling in Hamburg in 1721, where he became musical director of the city’s five main churches. While Telemann’s career prospered, his personal life was always troubled: his first wife died only a few months after their marriage, & his second wife had extramarital affairs & accumulated a large gambling debt before leaving Telemann.

Telemann was one of the most prolific composers in history & was considered by his contemporaries to be one of the leading German composers of the time—he was compared favorably both to his friend Johann Sebastian Bach, who made Telemann the godfather & namesake of his son Carl Philipp Emanuel, & to George Frideric Handel, whom Telemann also knew personally. He remained at the forefront of all new musical tendencies & his music is an important link between the late Baroque & early Classical styles

1790 – Birthday of Ludwig Emil Grimm, a German painter, art professor, etcher & copper engraver. His brothers were the well-known folklorists Jacob & Wilhelm Grimm

1804 – Birthday of Johann Strauss I, an Austrian Romantic composer. He was famous for his waltzes, & he popularized them alongside Joseph Lanner, thereby setting the foundations for his sons to carry on his musical dynasty. His most famous piece is the Radetzky March.

1820 – Birthday of Victor Emmanuel II – Giuseppe Garibaldi made him King of Italy – first king of an independent, united Italy since the 6th century. The Italians gave him the epithet of Father of the Fatherland (Italian: Padre della Patria). Rudolf Steiner speaks about him in Karmic Relationships Vol. Lecture 12, as being a pupil of Garibaldi when they were together in the Hibernian Mysteries along with Cavour & Mazzini.

1867 – Birthday of Marie Steiner von Sivers – born into an aristocratic family in Włocławek, Poland, then part of Russia. She was well-educated, fluent in Russian, German, English, French & Italian. She studied theater & recitation with several teachers in Europe.

Marie von Sivers “appeared one day” at one of Rudolf Steiner’s early lectures in 1900. In the autumn of 1901, she posed the question to Steiner, “Would it be possible to create a spiritual movement based on European tradition and the impetus of Christ?” Rudolf Steiner later reported: With this, I was given the opportunity to act in a way that I had only previously imagined. The question had been put to me, and now, according to spiritual laws, I could begin to answer it.

Marie Steiner-von Sivers & Rudolf Steiner were married on Christmas eve 1914, & she was one of his closest colleagues. She accompanied him & helped him as secretary, translator, editor, & organizer of his lecture tours & other public activities. She assisted Steiner’s work with her own resources & in 1908 founded the Philosophical-Theosophical Press (later Philosophical-Anthroposophical) to publish Steiner’s work.

Marie von Sivers was trained in recitation & elocution & made a study of purely artistic speaking. She gave introductory poetry recitals at Steiner’s lectures & assisted him in the development of the 4 Mystery Dramas (1910–1913). With her help, Steiner conducted several speech & drama courses with the aim of raising these forms to the level of true art.

Starting in 1912, the art of eurythmy was developed by Rudolf Steiner. Under Marie Steiner-von Sivers’ guidance, it developed in three directions, as a stage art, as an integral part of Waldorf pedagogy, & as a therapeutic method. Under her tutelage, two schools of eurythmy were founded, in Berlin & in Dornach, Switzerland.

She made a great contribution to the development of anthroposophy, particularly in her work on the renewal of the performing arts (eurythmy, speech & drama), & the editing & publishing of Rudolf Steiner’s literary estate.

Marie von Sivers collaborated with Steiner for the rest of his life & carried his work beyond his death in 1925 until her own death in 1948, after reconciling with Ita Wegman.

1883 – Deathday of Karl Marx. Rudolf Steiner revealed that Marx was a landowner in Northern France in the early 9th century, & that one day his property was seized by a rival. Marx was then forced to work under the new owner of his former property. The new owner reincarnated as Friedrich Engels, who embarked on a compensatory cooperation with his former rival. So it is that old impulses of destiny may work on in a new incarnation. No wonder that Marx became a fierce enemy of all private property, having himself experienced in a previous life how insecure the private ownership of property can become. Those seeking deeper insight into this historic-karmic background of Marx & Engels & their activities are referred to Steiner’s lecture of 6 April 1924. GA 236.

1923 – Birthday of Diane Arbus, American photographer & writer noted for photographs of marginalized people—dwarfs, giants, transgender people, nudists, circus performers—& others whose normality was perceived by the general populace as ugly or surreal. In 1972, a year after she committed suicide, Arbus became the first American photographer to have photographs displayed at the Venice Biennale.  Millions viewed traveling exhibitions of her work in 1972–1979. The book accompanying the exhibition, Diane Arbus: An Aperture Monograph, is the bestselling photography monograph ever, still being reprinted today

1932 – Deathday of George Eastman, American inventor & businessman, founded Eastman Kodak

PRESENTERS AND GUIDES (Not a full list-more to come!)

Mary Stewart Adams is a Star Lore Historian, and host of the weekly public radio program and podcast “The Storyteller’s Night Sky”.  Through her research in spiritual science and her education in literary arts, Mary has developed a unique, humanities-based approach to understanding our relationship with the stars.  Her work is further augmented by an extensive knowledge of ancient mythologies and fairy tales, which she relates to the research and ideas of contemporary astronomy in order to understand the new star wisdom of astrosophy.

Eyahnna DalBo (artist of the Sophia Rising painting) came to anthroposophy 30 years ago when her daughter attended a Waldorf school. Her studies have included an undergraduate degree in fine art and graduate work in psychology using the arts for healing.  In her private practice, she developed various energetic modalities. Her experience with subtle energy fields gave her the opportunity to teach and take part in designing a curriculum for a 2-year program focusing on energy healing. As a consultant, she initiated numerous therapeutic programs to assist in pioneering the field of art therapy. Through the gift of an apprenticeship with indigenous people she was able to bring their practices and ceremonies to what she offered deepening her ability to be of service.  As an artist, she continues to utilize the spoken word, movement, sound, and visual imagery to honor and create a field that fosters awareness, growth, and transformation.

Angela Foster has been an active student of anthroposophy since 2008. After growing up in Texas, Angela is now embracing life in Atlanta, Georgia as an artist, teacher, and mom of two daughters, shepherd to two mini sheep. As a conscious practitioner of “beginner’s mind”, Angela has completed programs in foundation studies in Anthroposophy numerous times and is currently enrolled in Foundation Studies in Goethean Science through the Nature Institute. She and her husband manage the Anthroposophical Resource Center (ARC) an initiative in Decatur, Georgia that offers space for community events and serves as a little house for Anthroposophia.

Stephanie Georgieff, MS is an author, podcaster and pilgrim. Residing mostly in the Northern Hemisphere, she has written several books on The Divine Feminine as presented through the genre of The Black Madonna, The Virgin of Guadalupe and The Divine Sophia. She has spoken at conferences and venues throughout North America, the United Kingdom and Europe. Vox in Excelso

Conor Walton

It seems to me today more than ever necessary that the members of our Movement should be knowledgeable about what is going on in the world. Indeed this purpose has been served to a greater or lesser degree by the discussions we have been having here. To speak of spiritual science in the way we understand it means to fill ourselves with knowledge of how our world, which we observe with our physical understanding and senses, is in fact a revelation of the spirit. As long as the spiritual world is taken in the abstract, as long as the human being is divided up into his constituent parts, as long as all kinds of theories about karma and reincarnation are expounded — something we have really never done here in such a theoretical way — spiritual science cannot become fruitful for life. That is why I have been directing your attention in all kinds of ways to external reality, whereby I never lost sight of all that stands behind this external reality, either by way of direct occult factors, or by way of impulses being used in one way or another by human beings.” ~ Rudolf Steiner https://liberopensare.b-cdn.net/…/Rudolf-Steiner-The…

Rudolf Steiner’s Lectures on this day

ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

6th Century – Death-Day of Pope Gregory the Great: “Non Angli, sed angeli” – “They are not Angles, but angels”.

1312 – Abolition of the order of Knights Templar –

Vox in excelso is the name of a Papal Bull issued by Pope Clement V in 1312. The directives were to formally dissolve the Order of the Knights Templar, effectively removing Papal support for them & revoking the mandates given to them by previous popes in the 12th & 13th centuries.

“In view of the suspicion, infamy, loud insinuations and other things which have been brought against the other … and also the secret and clandestine reception of the brother of this Order; in view, moreover, of the serious scandal which has arisen from these things, which it did not seem could be stopped while the Order remained in being, and the danger to faith and souls, and the many horrible things which have been done by the very many of the brothers of this Order, who have lapsed into the sin of wicked apostasy, the crime of detestable idolatry, and the execrable outrage of the Sodomites … it is not without bitterness and sadness of heart that we abolish the aforesaid Order of the Temple, and its constitution, habit and name, by an irrevocable and perpetually valid decree; and we subject it to perpetual prohibition with the approval of the Holy Council, strictly forbidding anyone to presume to enter the said Order in the future, or to receive or wear its habit, or to act as a Templar.” — Vox in excelso

The issue of this Bull followed a five-year period of suppression & trials of the Templars during which time they were accused of a variety of blasphemous & heretical crimes. However, the confessions were extracted with the use of torture & other methods developed by the Inquisition.

Initially, the Knights Templar faced criticism from some religious leaders. But in 1129, the group received the formal endorsement of the Catholic Church & support from Bernard of Clairvaux, a prominent French abbot.

In 1139, Pope Innocent II issued a Papal Bull that allowed the Knights Templar special rights. Among them, the Templars were exempt from paying taxes, permitted to build their own oratories, & held to no one’s authority, except the Pope’s.

The Knights Templar set up a prosperous network of banks & gained enormous financial influence. Their banking system allowed religious pilgrims to deposit assets in their home countries & withdraw funds in the Holy Land.

The order became known for its austere code of conduct & signature style of dress, which featured a white habit emblazoned with a simple red cross.

Members swore an oath of poverty, chastity & obedience. Prayer was essential to their daily life, & the Templars expressed particular adoration for the Virgin Mary.

As the Knights Templar grew in size & status, it established new chapters throughout Western Europe.

At the height of their influence, the Templars boasted a sizable fleet of ships, owned the Mediterranean island of Cyprus, & served as a primary bank &lending institution to European monarchs & nobles.

The Fall of Acre in 1291 marked the destruction of the last remaining Crusader refuge in the Holy Land. European support of the military campaigns in the Holy Land began to erode over the decades that followed. Additionally, many secular & religious leaders became increasingly critical of the Templars’ wealth & power.

By 1303, the Knights Templar lost its foothold in the Muslim world & established a base of operations in Paris. There, King Philip IV of France resolved to bring down the order, perhaps because the Templars had denied the indebted ruler additional loans.

On Friday, October 13, 1307, scores of French Templars were arrested, including the order’s grand master Jacques de Molay. Many of the knights were brutally tortured until they confessed to false charges, which included heresy, homosexuality, financial corruption, devil worshipping, fraud, spitting on the cross & more.

A few years later, dozens of Templars were burned at the stake in Paris for their confessions. De Molay was executed in 1314.

Under pressure from King Philip, Pope Clement V reluctantly dissolved the Knights Templar TODAY 12 March 1312. The group’s property & monetary assets were taken by King Philip & King Edward II of England, seizing most of the Knights Templar’s wealth.

Hypatia of Alexandria

“Reserve your right to think, for even to think wrongly is better than not to think at all”.

“He who influences the thought of his times, influences all the times that follow. He has made his impress on eternity.”

To teach superstitions as truth is a most terrible thing.”

To rule by fettering the mind through fear of punishment in another world is just as base as to use force.”

“Life is an unfoldment, and the further we travel the more truth we can comprehend. To understand the things that are at our door is the best preparation for understanding those that lie beyond.” ~Hypatia of Alexandria

Interesting that today is the Deathday of Hypatia, since yesterday I shared a bit on the biography of Marie Steiner-von Sivers for Applied Anthroposophy. I will have more to say On Frau Dr. Steiner on her birthday 14 March.

The Deathday (martyrdom) of Hypatia of Alexandria (according to the Original Calendar of the Soul by Rudolf Steiner 11 March 415 AD)

“…all the streams of Post-Atlantean culture that were intended to come together did indeed converge on Alexandria, the city established on the scene of the third culture-epoch but with the character of the fourth.

All the sages and philosophers working in Alexandria seem to be embodiments of ancient wisdom transformed into human personality; it is the personal element that speaks out of them.

There again we have a projection on the physical plane of earlier, more spiritual conditions. In the Orphic Mysteries of ancient Greece there was a wonderful personality, one who was initiated in the Mystery-secrets and was among the most loveable, most interesting pupils of these Mysteries, well prepared by a certain Celtic occult training undergone in earlier incarnations. This individuality sought with deepest fervour for the secrets of the Orphic Mysteries. The pupils of these Mysteries had to live through in their own soul what is described in the myth of Dionysos Zagreus, who was dismembered by the Titans but whose body was carried away by Zeus into a higher life. How, as the result of a certain path taken in the Mysteries, man’s life is surrendered to the outer world, how his whole being is torn in pieces so that he can no longer find his bearings within himself — this was to become an actual, individual experience in the pupils of the Orphic Mysteries.

a pupil of the Orphic Mysteries had to develop the inner strength of soul which would enable him, re-established as a self-based individuality, to triumph over the disintegration of his being in the external world. When all this had become an actual human experience, it represented in a certain sense one of the very highest secrets of Initiation…

Among the pupils of the Orphic Mysteries was the loveable personality of whom I am speaking, whose earthly name has not come down to posterity, but who stands out clearly as a pupil of these Mysteries…this individual was the teacher the great Philosopher Pherecydes of Syros…

At the end of the 4th century, A.D., we find this individuality reborn as the daughter of a great mathematician, Theon. We see how there flashes up in her soul all that could be experienced of the Orphic Mysteries through vision of the great mathematical, light-woven texture of the universe. All this was now personal talent, personal genius…

This individuality had as yet experienced nothing that enabled people at that time to see beyond the shadow-sides of Christianity at its beginning. For all that had remained in this soul as an echo of the Orphic Mysteries was still too powerful to enable any Illumination to be received from that other Light, the new Christ Event. What arose round about as Christianity, represented by men of the type of Theophilus and Cyril, was in truth of such a nature that this Orphic individuality, working now with personal faculties, had things far greater, far richer in wisdom to say and to give than those who represented Christianity in Alexandria at that time.

Theophilus and Cyril were both filled with the deepest hatred of everything that was not Christian in the narrow ecclesiastical sense in which these two bishops, in particular, understood it. Christianity had assumed in them such an entirely personal character that these two patriarchs levied hirelings in their service; men were collected from far and near to form bodyguards for them. Their aim was power in its most personal sense. They were utterly obsessed by hatred of what originated in ancient times and yet was so much greater than the new that was appearing in caricatured shape.

The deepest hatred was directed by the dignitaries of Christianity in Alexandria against the individuality of the reborn Orphic pupil. The fact that she was branded as a black magician will not therefore surprise us. But that was enough to incite the whole mob of hirelings against the noble, unique figure of the reborn pupil of the Orphic Mysteries. She was still young, but in spite of her youth, in spite of the fact that she was obliged to undergo much that in those days, too, imposed great hardships as a woman during a long period of study, she found her way upwards to the light that outshone all the wisdom, all the knowledge existing in those days. And it was wonderful how in the lecture halls of Hypatia — for such was the name of this reincarnated Orphic pupil — the purest, most luminous wisdom in Alexandria was presented to the enraptured listeners. She drew to her feet not only the Pagans, bat also Christians of deep and penetrating insight, such as Synesius. She was an influence of outstanding significance, and the revival of the old Pagan wisdom of Orpheus transformed into personality could be experienced in Alexandria in the figure of Hypatia.

World-karma was working in the truest sense symbolically. What had constituted the secret of her Initiation was now projected, mirrored, on the physical plane. And here we come to an event that is symbolically significant in the case of many things that have taken place in historical times. We come to one of those events that is seemingly only a martyrdom, but is in reality a symbol in which spiritual forces, spiritual intimations are coming to expression.

On a day in March in the year 415 A.D., Hypatia fell victim to the fury of these who formed the entourage of the patriarch of Alexandria. They resolved to rid themselves of her power, of her spiritual power. The utterly uncivilised, wild hordes were rushed in from the environs of Alexandria as well, and the chaste young sage was fetched away under false pretenses. She mounted the chariot, and at a given sign the enflamed rabble fell upon her, tore off her clothing, dragged her into a church, and literally tore the flesh from her bones. The fragments of her body were then scattered around the city by these hordes, completely dehumanized by their rapacious passions. Such was the fate of the great woman philosopher, Hypatia.

Symbolically, so to say, there is indicated here something that is deeply connected with the founding of Alexandria by Alexander the Great — although it happened a long time after the actual founding of the city. In this event, important secrets of the 4th Post-Atlantean epoch are reflected. This epoch, destined as it was to represent the dissolution, the sweeping-away, of the old, contained so much that was great and significant, and with paradoxical grandeur placed before the world a most pregnant symbol in the slaughter — one can call it nothing else — of Hypatia, the outstanding woman at the turn of the 4th-5th centuries of our era. ~Rudolf Steiner, OCCULT HISTORY, GA 126, Lecture , 27 December 1910, Stuttgart

Rudolf Steiner also gave a reference to the following incarnation of Hypatia:

“And I can only point out that just such an individuality as the one who was incarnated as Hypatia, who brought with her the wisdom of the Orphic mysteries and lived them out personally, was then called upon in a subsequent incarnation to take the opposite path – to embrace the Christ path: to carry personal wisdom up again to the divine-spiritual. Therefore Hypatia appears around the turn of the 12th to the 13th century as an important, comprehensive, universal spirit of modern history, which has a great influence on what is the synthesis of scientific and also philosophical knowledge. So we see how the historical powers penetrate into the successive incarnations of the individualities.”

An entry in Rudolf Steiner’s notebook (archive no. 523), relating to reincarnations, shows which personality is meant here, because he lists the name Albertus Magnus (deathday 15 November 1280) next to the name of Hypatia.

222 – Emperor Elagabalus is assassinated, along with his mother, Julia Soaemias, by the Praetorian Guard during a revolt. Their mutilated bodies are dragged through the streets of Rome before being thrown into the Tiber. Elagabalus served as a priest of the Syrian god Elagabal, barely 14 years old, when he became emperor, initiating a reign remembered mainly for sex scandals & religious controversy.

Elagabalus showed a disregard for Roman religious traditions & sexual taboos. He replaced the traditional head of the Roman pantheon, Jupiter, with Elagabalus. He forced leading members of Rome’s government to participate in religious rites celebrating this deity, over which he personally presided. Elagabalus was supposedly “married” as many as five times, lavished ‘favors’ on male courtiers &  was reported to have prostituted himself in the imperial palace. He developed a reputation among his contemporaries for extreme eccentricity, decadence, & zealotry. His behavior estranged the Praetorian Guard, the Senate, & the common people alike.

336 BC – Deathday of Attalus important courtier of king Philip II of Macedonia.

Attalus’ niece Cleopatra Eurydice married king Philip II of Macedonia. At the wedding, Attalus made a prayer that Cleopatra give birth to a male heir. This was seen as a direct insult to Alexander the Great.

Philip II appointed Attalus & Parmenion as commanders of the advance force that would invade the Persian Empire in Asia Minor. After Philip II had been assassinated & Alexander became king, Cleopatra Eurydice, her two children, & Attalus were all killed.

According to a story of Aristotle‘s, Attalus sexually assaulted Pausanias of Orestis in retribution for besmirching the reputation of Attalus’ friend (possibly relation), also named Pausanias, an event that led to the latter Pausanias’s death. Philip II assassination by Pausanias of Orestis has been tied to this affair since Pausanias was upset that Phillip had not punished Attalus.

At the time of the accession of Alexander the Great to the Macedonian throne, Attalus was stationed with Parmenion & the Macedonian advance army in Asia Minor. In the wake of Phillip II’s death, it is alleged by hostile sources that Demosthenes of Athens wrote a letter to Attalus promising Athens’ support if the two made war on Alexander.

Attalus submitted Demosthenes’ letters to Alexander & pledged his support to the king. However, Alexander had Attalus killed, remembering the past insult of Attalus. Even without the resentment between the two men, Alexander probably felt Attalus was too ambitious to remain alive, & would have good reason for revenge after the deaths of Cleopatra Eurydice & her children.

638 – Deathday of Sophronius of Jerusalem, the Patriarch of Jerusalem venerated as a saint in the Eastern Orthodox & Catholic Churches. He was a monk & theologian who was the chief protagonist for Orthodox teaching in the doctrinal controversy on the essential nature of Jesus & his volitional acts.

Sophronius was of Byzantine Greek, as well as Syrian Arab descent. A teacher of rhetoric, Sophronius became an ascetic in Egypt & then entered the monastery of St. Theodosius near Bethlehem. Traveling to monastic centres in Asia Minor, Egypt, & Rome, he accompanied the Byzantine chronicler St. John Moschus, who dedicated to him his celebrated tract on the religious life, Leimõn ho Leimõnon (Greek: “The Spiritual Meadow”) (and whose feast day in the Eastern Orthodox Church, 11 March is shared with Sophonius’)

He traveled to Alexandria, Egypt, & to Constantinople to persuade the respective patriarchs to renounce Monothelitism, a heterodox teaching that espoused a single, divine will in Christ to the exclusion of a human capacity for choice. Sophronius’ extensive writings on this question are all lost.

Although unsuccessful in this mission, Sophronius was elected patriarch of Jerusalem in 634. Soon after his enthronement he forwarded his noted synodical letter to Pope Honorius I & to the Eastern patriarchs, explaining the orthodox belief in the two natures, human & divine, of Christ, as opposed to Monothelitism.

In 637, after the conquest of Jerusalem by Muslim armies, the Muslim caliph Umar ibn al-Khattab came to Jerusalem & toured the city with Sophronius. During the tour of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the time for the Muslims’ prayer came, & despite Sophronius’s offer to Umar to pray inside the Church, Umar chose to pray outside. The caliph’s reason for declining to pray there was because in the future Muslims might say that Umar prayed here & use it as an excuse to build a mosque there. Therefore, Muslims are not allowed to build a mosque there. So appreciating the caliph’s intelligence Sophronius gave the keys of the church to him. Unable to refuse it the caliph gave it to a family of Muslims from Medina. The keys of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre still remain with the Muslim family.

Frankenstein, or, The Modern Prometheus eBook by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley - 1230000027127 | Rakuten Kobo United States

1818 – Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley’s novel, Frankenstein; or The modern Prometheus, is published

1918 – The 1st case of Spanish flu occurs, the start of a devastating worldwide pandemic

2014 – Deathday of Baruch Urieli, Christian Community Priest – born Kurt Beamt into a Viennese Jewish family. His father was a writer. Baruch’s whole family died in the Holocaust. After the Anschluss in March 1938, he was rescued with 14 other boys and worked for a year on a Danish farm. Following the German invasion of Denmark, at 17 he sailed to Israel. Like many, he gave himself a Hebrew name on the boat to Haifa.

Baruch spent 12 years in kibbutz life as a gardener and teacher. There he met Tamar Schoenfeld, who was also displaced as a child by the Anschluss, going from country to country. The couple married in 1948. Through her he was introduced to anthroposophy, Rudolf Steiner’s spiritual philosophy.

He was deeply in tune with the spiritual atmosphere of Ireland and with its Celtic Christian heritage; to this he brought his central European scholarship and spiritual tradition. As a celebrant he had a movingly modest power; as a teacher he drew on a foundation of deep, reflective learning and an extensive knowledge of the world. He spoke seven languages, including Danish, Norwegian and Hebrew.

In the 1990s Baruch and Tamar retired from Glencraig to a Camphill community at Kyle, Co Kilkenny. Baruch continued to contribute to the community’s social life with humanity, learning and humor.

His books, widely read in the Camphill Movement, include ‘Learning to Experience the Etheric World: Empathy, the After Image and a New Social Ethic’, and ‘Eros and Fable: Novalis’ Fairy Tale of Human and Earth Evolution’. Read a biographical piece that he wrote HERE
