“A Ceremony of Cosmic Order”

Lebanon art painting artist painter poet history artwork, Redemption
Joseph Matar

Dorothy Hinkle-Uhlig translated the results of a meditation by Thomas Mayer on the corona virus (covid 19). She received this work in March 2020 from a friend.

  • My (Thomas Mayer) own meditative work and research with the Corona Virus revealed the following: My main intention was to meditate on the waves of fear and here I found many fear elementals that were filling the entire world. They were acting aggressive and very foreign, as if coming from another star. They are not coming from present humanity and this is perhaps why humanity is reacting so strongly, which in turn drives the fear waves further with their own feelings and actions.
  • These elementals belong to the soul level of the corona virus. Since worldwide the attention is directed to them, they go everywhere. This means that through our fear of the virus, it is present everywhere on a soul level.
  • When did these corona virus elementals arise? It was surprising to me to experience that they arose in very old times during the earth incarnation on the old Moon. This is where the angels of today went through their human phase.  Soul substance that had become evil and the related Angels who remained behind and who had come in connection with the Ahriman and the Asuras separated. This separation was necessary for the development of other beings and was accomplished by very strict angels. I assess that they were of the Hierarchy of Exusai.
  • I can experience these strict angels again now. They are the guardians of the corona virus, which is challenging human beings. The angels are of the opinion that the time has come that the separated group, which has been leading an “otherworldly life”, should and can be integrated. They remind us with this of the very old collective unredeemed shadow and make possible the redemption.
  • On January 12, 2020 there was a very special and rare constellation of the planets: a conjunction of Pluto, Saturn, Mercury and the Sun. The emergence of the corona virus correlates with this date. When the planets remind us of the essential, would it not be astonishing when, with that, responsibilities arise.
  • What exactly do the corona virus elementals want? They want to be integrated again into the earth evolution and they want to get to know and experience the Christ. I have had very good experience, when I encountered the corona virus with a positive attitude und showed them the Christ, when I showed them the nature beings, and when I prayed for them the Lord’s Prayer through. They received the impulse well and were ready to transform. At the same time, I had the sense that in the depths of the human being something became more complete.
  • This work is to be continued, because new corona elementals will continually come. Here we have a large mountain to work through.
  • I can recommend these and similar redemption meditations. The atmosphere relaxes immediately. That is the best answer from the Spirit. Each individual contribution changes the collective field and is important.

1919 – Opening of the 1st Waldorf School in Stuttgart “A Ceremony of Cosmic Order”

“We can accomplish our work only if we do not see it as simply a matter of intellect or feeling, but, in the highest sense, as a moral spiritual task. Therefore, you will understand why, as we begin this work today, we first reflect on the connection we wish to create from the very beginning between our activity and the spiritual worlds. With such a task, we must be conscious that we do not work only in the physical plane of living human beings.

In the last centuries, this way of viewing work has increasingly gained such acceptance that it is virtually the only way people see it. This understanding of tasks has made teaching what it is now and that the work before us should improve. Thus, we wish to begin our preparation by first reflecting upon how we connect with the spiritual powers in whose service and in whose name each one of us must work. I ask you to understand these introductory words as a kind of prayer to those powers who stand behind us with Imagination, Inspiration and Intuition as we take up this task.

It is our duty to see the importance of our work. We will do this if we know that this school is charged with a particular task. We need to make our thoughts very concrete; we need to form our thoughts so that we can be conscious that this school fulfills something special. We can do this only when we do not view the founding of this school as an everyday occurrence, but instead regard it as a ceremony held within Cosmic Order. In this sense, I wish, in the name of the good spirit whose task it is to lead humanity out of suffering and misery, in the name of this good spirit whose task it is to lead humanity to a higher level of development in education. I wish to give the most heartfelt thanks to this good spirit who has given our dear friend Mr. Molt the good thoughts to do what he has done for the further development of humanity at this time and in this place, and what he has done for the Waldorf School. We are united with him in feeling the greatness of the task and of the moment in which it is begun, and in feeling that this is a festive moment in Cosmic Order, he will be able to work in our midst with the necessary strength.

We wish to begin our work with this in mind. We wish to see each other as human beings brought together by karma, who will bring about, not something common, but something that, for those doing this work, will include the feeling of a festive Cosmic moment. ~Rudolf Steiner, ‘The Foundations of Human Experience’.

Dear friends in all the hubbub around HWW I forgot to share Roy Sadler’s good thoughts & translation of the Calendar of the Soul for last week:

‘Dear Hazel,
I trust you and your dear friends have had an enlightening weekend.
May its thunder wave on into new opportunities for all of you.
With a long interest in Isis, your quest to unravel her mysteries led me
yesterday to read on the rsarchive Steiner’s 1917-18 Christmas & Epiphany
lectures. Wonderful! And it came to me at about 10.30pm GMT
at the time you were Lifting the veil on Isis and Sophia that maybe
they could be revealed in this week’s Soul Calendar verse
(in a turning point within it I was anyway not sure how to make).
Could this be a 21st century translation for the future of our spirit
and how we will endow it in ourselves?’

v23
In autumn haze
the senses’ lure fades;
a mist arising veils
the light’s revealing.
In widths of space I see
the autumn landscape fall asleep.
The summer’s yielded me her being
for me to reap.

In sunlight of my soul
the fruit of thought matures;
all feeling turns to sureness
of self-awareness.
In joy to sense
the autumn’s rousing of the spirit;
within me will the winter wake
the summer of the soul.

With my best wishes for your safe circle, and for my own and for everyone’s, and for our ability to embrace the mirror of each other and also strive to free the fruits of Isis and find the strength of will to work for our beleaguered world.

Platonism - Wikiwand

Deathday of Albinus a Platonist philosopher, who lived at Smyrna, pupil of Gaius the Platonist & teacher of Galen.  A short tract by him, entitled Introduction to Plato’s dialogues, has survived. After explaining the nature of the Dialogue, which he compares to a Drama, he  goes on to divide the Dialogues of Plato into four classes, logical, critical, physical, ethical, & mentions another division of them into Tetralogies, according to their subjects. He advises that the Alcibiades, Phaedo, Republic, & Timaeus, should be read in a series

Jane Addams: the activist who set a foundation for modern social work | Personal Investments | The Guardian

1860 – Birthday of Jane Addams, sociologist & author, Nobel Prize laureate – I have a soft spot for this powerful lady – I went to Jane Addams Jr. High & the Hull House museum is close to where I live in Chicago. Jane Addams life’s work still resonates in a big way today. Social worker, suffragette & activist are just some of the titles that apply to her. In 1889, Jane founded a social settlement called Hull House, which supported thousands of people each week – mainly immigrants, the poor & the dispossessed. It became a model for similar communities in the future.

Flashback: At a time when immigrants were feared, Chicago's Hull House nurtured the lives of the foreign-born - Chicago Tribune

Jane studied medicine as a young adult but decided that wasn’t her calling. She was inspired during a trip to London when she visited the world’s first settlement house, Toynbee Hall. Within months, she opened the doors to a similar facility in her hometown of Chicago.

Set up Hull Houses for 2013 - Chicago Tribune

Originally conceived to give immigrants & the poor access to the arts, Hull House evolved according to the community’s needs. Along the way, Jane also challenged corrupt local officials, investigated health issues and lobbied against unfair laws.

Catching Up With History at Jane Addams' Hull-House

Jane was way ahead of her time, a person who was making inquiries & putting her money where her mouth was into figuring out enormous social problems. She made a lot of progress in ways that are still really resonant. The legacy started at Hull House lives on, from juvenile courts & labor laws to playgrounds & public sanitation. The Mother of Social Work set a standard for how to help others.

Preparing for Michaelmas:

I watch the shadows lengthen. The angle of the sun, like the lance of Michael, a sunlit spear piercing awake my sleepy summer eyes, banishing the sulphur, activating the iron in my blood. Am I ready to do battle with the dragon within?

If spiritual science is allowed to live in us & extend its transforming influence to our heart-space, what enters us as thoughts, is then changed, into the substance of light, into the purest light of thought. And in the living enthusiasm of the heart, this light of thought then rays out from our hearts into the macrocosm, as light of the redeemed intelligence of Michael; as enlivened human thought, which can be re-united with the world-thoughts of the gods.

Heart-Thinking is the essence of Michaelmas, as the festival of Enlightenment; where we can learn to experience an unfolding of our inner initiative & a free, strong, courageous will, opposing our love of ease. Yes, it’s easy this time of year, to want to get cozy on the couch, to snuggle up with the dragon, flipping thru the channels, fighting over the remote…

But it is our job to strive to complete the never ending story, with the new Michaelic mysteries put forth by Rudolf Steiner, a true emissary of Michael, teaching us to count the human being as the 10th hierarchy. And so, work we must, as we stand once more on the edge of autumn.

See you there…

Elemental Meditation

Take a moment, sit comfortably & calm your mind…Take a deep breath, deep into your belly, hold it for a moment, & let it slowly go…

You Have The Power - Earth Element - Spoonflower
Sheilla Fek

Imagine that you are standing on a high, wide hill. It is midnight, & the waning moon cuts a slice of light onto the landscape. You turn to the North, & across the valley, you can see majestic mountains, their sharp peaks reaching toward the sky. You notice the richness of the colors in the rock, & the pure whiteness of the snowy crests. A light breeze wafts up from the valley, bringing with it the earthy odors of the lush vegetation below.

You spread your feet wide, & you can feel the indomitable strength of the stone. Time slows down, & you feel that you yourself are made of the same stone, with your “I” in the realm of the Seraphim.  You have seen eons of time go by; you have seen the Earth’s creatures evolve in the slow steady dance of life & death. You are One with the living Earth, part of her body ever changing, ever treasure full…

Spend a few breaths in rhythm with her cycles…then allow the image to fade…

Della Betweow

Again you are standing on the hill. You turn to the East, & you notice that the dawn is beginning to break. An insistent breeze raises your hair, as you inhale the heady perfume of newly opened flowers in the air

A tall pine grows up out of the valley, & on its topmost branch sits an eagle. It gives a loud cry, & as the sun breaks over the horizon, the eagle spreads its wings, & with powerful strokes, lifts itself into the rising currents of air. As it soars nearer, you too, can feel the rising thermals pressing upwards on your being, lifting & supporting the thoughts of your highest mind. You gaze around, & you find that you can distinguish the smallest detail with perfect clarity. You are One with the Air. Take a few healing breaths in the quicksilver lightness of new beginnings…your mind free & uncluttered… sharp & attuned…slowly this image begins to morph & fade.

Pin on Bestiary

Again you find yourself a top the hill. You turn to the South, you realize it is high noon, & the blazing Sun beats down like a drum. You look out over the valley, undulating with heat, & from a cleft on the other side, you see an ancient winged-dragon emerge. It looks up to where you stand, & your eyes meet. Michael holds him lightly with a golden chain.

Before Michael lets him go, he beckons the dragon to kneel, head bowed. A clear violet flame springs forth from its brow, & you watch as this being transforms in a purifying fire, burning away all illusion of separateness & opposition, releasing the essence of warmth, enthusiasm & courage. The dragon revealed as a winged serpent of Wisdom, flies across the blazing valley toward you, & yet you feel perfectly safe meeting this great being face to face. Its eyes are like red coals, & its breath is hot fire on your face, like the scorching Sun, smelling of the molten flames burning deep within your solar plexus. Its scales appear metallic, as though they were made of beaten gold. It lowers its head, & as you place your hand on its brow, you feel a surge of energy, as though the plasma of the Sun itself was flowing through your veins. You are One with the Sun energy reclaimed from the belly of the dragon.

Take a few golden breaths feeling its activating passion, protecting & enlivening every cell of your being. Release the dragon in peace, to go back to his master Michael, & allow the image to fade.

Sunset Wave Painting by Stephen Ford
Stephan Ford

Yet again you find yourself standing on the hilltop. You turn to the West, & you realize that the Sun is setting. At the base of the hill a vast sea spreads to the horizon. Its deep blue surface is calm, & you feel a deep sense of perfect peace & serenity. The waters of the sea gently lap the shore directly below you, revealing its secret mysteries at your feet. You walk down the shore of this primordial wellspring, wading into the cool water. At the oceans edge, you see that a clear spring flows out from the side of the hill, cascading over rocks, to form a small waterfall.

You reach down, & scoop up some of this clear sparkling water, bringing it to your mouth to drink. The water tastes incredibly fresh & clean, & you know that it is.

You dive into the seawater at the base of the waterfall, & feel its smoothness over your body. You laugh, & float like a fish in the sea, soon realizing that you are surrounded by dolphins. You can feel their joy in life, you allow yourself to join in their playfulness. You feel the flowing force of your loving ancestors acting as midwifes as you are reborn in the purifying saltwater. You lie back, to allow the water to support you, yet you need no support, for you are One with the Water….

Spend a few breaths in the deep truth of this peace & calm, as you slowly allow the image to fade…

Once again you are on the hill. It is night. You look up, & see the great black arch of the sky thick with stars. As you gaze at them, you feel a pulsation of energy coming from them, & from the Earth beneath your feet. The energy feels like a dance, with you in the center of the leminscate, as you sway to its rhythm, the music of the spheres enters you, & you are One with the Universe the 5th Sacred Thing. Breathe with the Life-Force pulsing within you…

ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

In Nathaniel's calling, there's more than meets the eye - Detroit Catholic: Read Catholic News & Stories

Deathday of Nathanael (Hebrew נתנאל, “God has given”) of Cana in Galilee, a disciple of Jesus Christ, mentioned in the Gospel of John in Chapters 1 & 21.

Jesus immediately characterizes him as “an Israelite in whom is no deceit”.   Steiner said this is a reference to the fact that Nathanael had been initiated & had received the title “The Israelite.” Jesus’ quote: “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you”, shows their connection in the super-sensible world.

Gaius Marius Victorinus | LibraryThing

Deathday of Gaius Marius Victorinus, born in Africa he became a Roman rhetorician & Neoplatonic philosopher. He translated 2 of Aristotle’s books from ancient Greek into Latin: The Categories &On Interpretation

Deathday of Zacharias the Prophet, father of John the Baptist. He performed the priest’s office in Jerusalem during the reign of Herod. The Lord appeared before him, standing on the right side of the altar & said “Fear, not Zacharias,” assuring him that his prayer was well pleasing & it had inclined God to a great act of mercy. The Archangel Gabriel then visited Zacharias’ wife Elizabeth who had long been barren & told her that she would give birth to a son who would be called John, whose name signifies grace.

Zacharias said to the angel, “Whereby shall I know this? For I am an old man and my wife is well stricken in years.”  The angel answered, “I am Gabriel, that stands in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to show thee these glad tidings.  And, behold, thou shall be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things be performed, because thou believes not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season.”

Then the prophecy was fulfilled & John was born, & after Zacharias had written John’s name on a writing tablet, his mouth was filled with the Holy Spirit, his tongue was loosed, & he spoke, praising God.

When Jesus was born in Bethlehem & the Magi came from the East, they told Herod of the newborn king. Herod sent soldiers to slay all the children in Bethlehem, he especially remembered hearing about the miraculous birth of John. “What manner of child shall this be?  Will this child be the King of the Jews?”  He decided to kill John.  The executioners could not find them, but the slaughter of innocents began.

When Elizabeth heard these cries, she took John & fled into the mountains.  When she saw soldiers drawing near, she prayed to God & cried out to the rocky mount nearby and said, “O mountain of God, receive a mother and her child!” Immediately the mountain was split & she entered hiding herself & John from the executioners.

The soldiers returned to Herod, having not found the child, & Herod sent word to Zacharias in the temple saying, “Surrender your son John to me.”  Saint Zacharias replied, “You will kill my body, but the Lord will receive my soul.”  The executioners straightway fulfilled Herod’s command & fell upon Zacharias between the temple & the altar.  His blood was spilt on the floor & became hardened like rock as a witness against Herod & a testimony to Zacharias.

Enkindle the Force of Michael

Paintings by Rudolf Steiner
Rudolf Steiner

At Michaelmas, 1923, for the last time in his earthly life as Rudolf Steiner, this great, humble initiate, was able to fully celebrate a Michaelmas festival, in Vienna, the capital city of his own homeland, where he had spent so many fruitful years in his youth. Much of Germany, including Berlin, was cut off from him in that year of uncontrolled inflation, but there in Vienna he could feel himself truly at home, as he re-founded the Anthroposophical Society in Austria & gave wonderful lectures on the human Gemüt. (The dictionary translates Gemüt as “heart, soul, mind,” seeming to imply, “take your choice.” But the word Gemüt must not be thought of as having these 3 separate meanings, but rather as a unified concept embracing all 3. We can think of Gemüt, as something like: the mind warmed by a loving heart, stimulated by the soul’s imaginative power. It might also be described as the soul in a state of intuition arising from the working together of heart & mind with courage.

It is a very beautiful & comprehensive word which every student of anthroposophy must strive to be on intimate terms with.  Steiner tells us: “This human Gemüt dwells in the very center of the soul life.

The Michael Mystery : Dr Rudolf Steiner : 9781621481225

In his Christmas letter in 1924 to the members, which form part of the ‘Michael Mystery’, Steiner emphasized in a single marvelously compressed paragraph the task of humanity in the middle period of the age of the consciousness soul in which we are now living.

In its essential nature the Spiritual Soul (Consciousness Soul) is not cold. It seems to be so only at the commencement of its unfolding, because at that stage it can only reveal the light-element in its nature, and not as yet the cosmic warmth in which it has indeed its origin.”

This cosmic warmth must now be breathed out by all of us into our observation of the external world. Not only must we understand the world objectively in the manner of a spiritual scientist, but we must enter into this understanding with our life of feeling, to wrest the world from Ahriman’s clutches, filling it with the Christ forces working from within ourselves.

Cleverness, then, has been furnished in abundance by the last few centuries; but what we need today is warmth of Gemüt, and this anthroposophy can provide. When someone studying anthroposophy says it leaves him cold, he reminds me of one who keeps piling wood in the stove and then complains that the room doesn’t get warm. Yet all he needs to do is to kindle the wood, then it will get warm. Anthroposophy can be presented, and it is the good wood of the soul; but it can be enkindled only by each within himself. What everyone must find in his Gemüt is the match wherewith to light anthroposophy. Anthroposophy is in truth warm and ardent: it is the very soul of the Gemüt; and he who finds this anthroposophy cold and intellectual and matter-of-fact just lacks the means of kindling it so it may pervade him with its fire. And just as only a little match is needed to light ordinary wood, so anthroposophy, too, needs only a little match. But this will enkindle the force of Michael in man.” ~ Rudolf Steiner ‘Michaelmas & the Soul forces of man’ lecture 2 September 28, 1923 (GA 223)

In ‘Michaelmas and the Soul-Forces of Man’ Steiner describes just how it is possible to enter into the external world with love, endowing it with soul-warmth, & in the process learning also to celebrate a new kind of Autumn Festival in which Michael can truly participate.

Together dear friends, may we warm our mind with a loving heart, to stimulate our soul’s imaginative power – let us cultivate together a state of intuition arising from the working together of our hearts & minds in the courageous power of love.

Blessings as we move consciously into Michaelmas 2020.

Moon near Mars on September 4, 5 and 6, 2020.

4 September 2020 – “Speaking with the Stars”: Friends, we’ll be able to see Bella Luna & Mars in conjunction on the nights of September 4-6. By now the Full Corn Moon will be waning (it’ll be around 86% lit) & will be visible next to Mars as evening twilight ebbs into darkness. but 1st comes Jupiter & Saturn, with Jupiter being the brighter of two. (For the fun of it, Uranus is shown there too. It’s theoretically visible to the eye, but requires a very dark sky – and no nearby moon – to be seen) Look for the moon & Mars to be up by mid-evening, by around 9 or 10 pm. If you have an obstructed eastern horizon, it could be a little later. And once the moon & Mars are up, they will be out for rest of the night.

Rudolf Steiner’s Lectures on this day

ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY (inspired by Rudolf Steiner’s Original Calendar of the Soul: “What is presented here can be useful to those who wish to follow the path of humankind’s spiritual development“)

Birth & Death-day of MOSES (from Rudolf Steiner’s Calendar of the Soul):

According to Egyptian astrologers, the liberator of the children of Israel was to be born on this day- So all the male children were to be thrown into the water by order of King Pharaoh.  JochebedAmram‘s wife, mother of Miriam, & Aaron,  gave birth to her third child, a boy that morning at sunrise. Right from that moment the house was filled with a radiant light, so they knew he was an extraordinary child. After three months, Jochebed saw that she would not be able to conceal her child any longer. So she made a small, water-proof basket & set him down among the papyrus reeds growing on the brink of the Nile. Miriam remained nearby to watch the baby.

The day was hot, & King Pharaoh’s daughter, Bithya, came out to the river, accompanied by her maids, to take a bath in the cool waters of the Nile. Suddenly, she heard the wailing of a small child, & she found the basket. Intrigued by the child’s beauty, Bithya tried to figure out a way to enable her to keep him for herself & save him from death, for she understood that this boy was from a Jewish family.

The child refused to be nursed by any of the Egyptian maids-in-waiting, & continued to weep. At this moment, Miriam came over to the princess & offered to find a Jewish nurse. Bithya was glad of this solution, so Miriam rushed home & brought her mother Jochebed, to be his ‘nurse’. For two years the baby was left in his mother’s care.

Meanwhile Bithya told Pharaoh about the boy she had adopted. Her father did not object as he felt sure that the danger had already been averted years ago. So Moses was taken to the royal court, where he grew up as the princely adopted son of the Pharaoh’s daughter.

Once it happened that Moses was playing on King Pharaoh’s lap. He saw the shining crown, studded with jewels, reached for it & took it off. Pharaoh, asked his astrologers for the meaning of this action. They interpreted it to mean that Moses was a threat to Pharaoh’s crown & suggested that the child be put to death before it could do any harm. But one of the king’s counselors suggested that they should first test the boy to see whether his action was prompted by an evil intelligence, or if he was merely grasping for sparkling things as any other child would.

Pharaoh agreed to this, & two bowls were set down before young Moses. One contained gold & jewels, & the other held glowing fire-coals. Moses reached out for the gold, but an angel re-directed his hand to the coals. Moses snatched a glowing coal & put it to his lips. He burned his hand & tongue, but his life was saved.

After that fateful test, Moses suffered from a slight speech defect. He could not become an orator, but G‑d’s words that were spoken to him & with the help of his brother Aaron & sister Miriam, he was able to fulfill his mission.

At age 20, Moses fled Egypt after killing an Egyptian he saw beating a Jew &made his way to Midian, where he married Zipporah, the daughter of Jethro, & fathered two sons, Gershom & Eliezer.

When he was 80 years old, Moses was shepherding his father-in-law’s sheep when G‑d revealed himself to him in a burning bush at Mount Horeb (Sinai) & instructed him to liberate the Children of Israel. Moses took the Israelites out of Egypt, performed numerous miracles for them (the ten plagues in Egypt, the splitting of the sea, extracting water from a rock, bringing down the manna, etc), received the Torah from G‑d & taught it to the people, built the Mishkan (Divine dwelling) in the desert, & led the Children of Israel for 40 years as they journeyed through the wilderness; but G‑d did not allow him to bring them into the Holy Land. Moses passed away on his 120th birthday on Mount Nebo, within sight of the land he yearned to enter.

According to Konrad Burdach, Rudolf Steiner connects Moses in a later incarnation as Goethe, in a special lecture in the GA 138 series

Saint Rosalia of Palermo |

1150 – Feast day of St. Rosalia – born of a Norman noble family that claimed descent from Charlemagne. Devoutly religious, she retired to live as a hermit in a cave on Mount Pellegrino, where she died alone in 1166. Tradition says that she was led to the cave by two angels. On the cave wall she wrote “I, Rosalia, daughter of Sinibald, Lord of Roses, and Quisquina, have taken the resolution to live in this cave for the love of my Lord, Jesus Christ.”

In 1624, a plague beset Palermo. During this hardship Saint Rosalia appeared first to a sick woman, then to a hunter, to whom she indicated where her remains were to be found. She ordered him to bring her bones to Palermo and have them carried in procession through the city.

The hunter climbed the mountain & found her bones in the cave as described. He did what she had asked in the apparition. After her remains were carried around the city three times, the plague ceased. After this Saint Rosalia was venerated as the patron saint of Palermo, & a sanctuary was built in the cave where her remains were discovered.

On September 4 there is a tradition of walking barefoot from Palermo up to Mount Pellegrino.  In Italian American communities in the United States, the September feast brings large numbers of visitors annually to the Bensonhurst section of Brooklyn in New York City.

The Great Riddle of Life

Sphinx Painting by Olga Zelinskaya | Saatchi Art

Every day, if we are awake to it, we can come across numerous clues about the Great Riddle of Life — you know, the brain-teasing, heart-stretching enigmas that tap on our shoulder, with Messages from our higher “I”.

So be alert! Revelations may arrive from unexpected sources & inadvertent teachers. Even seemingly insignificant events may be pregnant with pithy hints.

To cultivate the right kind of receptivity, be on the lookout not only for crisp answers, but also for ideas about how to formulate the Great Riddle more clearly.

Admit it, sometimes you go for months without even looking for clues; sleepwalking through the world, reacting blindly to the tricks that the  gods use to try to wake us up.

Then there are those phases when hot leads & fresh evidence pop up all over the place, convincing you beyond a  shadow of a doubt that magic is one of the fundamental properties of reality. This, my friend, is one of *those* times.

Orion’s right shoulder is marked by the famous red giant Betelgeuse, which recently underwent a strange dimming episode that caused it to fade noticeably. Astronomers now ascribe the episode to a “stellar sneeze,” during which it blew out a cloud of dust that blocked some of the star’s light from reaching Earth, making it appear to dim. hmmm, what’s that trying to tell us?

Vulcan and Fire Painting by Peter Paul Rubens
Paul Rubens

The festival of Vulcan, the god of fire, including volcanoes, deserts, metalworking and the forge in ancient Roman religion and myth. The Vulcanalia was the annual festival held August 23 in his honor, when the summer heat placed crops & granaries most at risk of burning. During the festival bonfires were created in honor of the god so he wouldn’t take the harvest. He is often depicted with a blacksmith’s hammer. His Greek counterpart is Hephaestus.

23 August – Feast Day of Santa Rosa de Lima | All the Saints of ...
Lily Blackett

Feast Day of Rose of Lima. ‘Saint Rose’ is the patroness of the Americas, sacred to the indigenous people,  in Lima, Peru.

Born Isabel Flores y de Oliva in Lima, the capital city of Peru, her nickname, “Rose,” came from a childhood incident in which a household servant attested to having seen the child’s face turn into a mystical rose. She took the name formally as her own, at her confirmation in 1597.

Sta Rosa de Lima por Claudio Coello.jpg

As a young girl, in emulation of St. Catherine of Siena, she began to fast three times a week and performed severe penances in secret. When she was admired for her beauty, Rose cut off her hair and burned her face, upset that men were beginning to take notice of her. She rejected all suitors against the objections of her friends and her family. Despite the censure of her parents, she spent many hours contemplating the Blessed Sacrament, which she received daily, an extremely rare practice in that period. She was determined to take a vow of virginity, which was opposed by her parents who wished her to marry.

After daily fasting, she took to permanently abstaining from eating meat. She helped the sick and hungry around her community, bringing them to her room and taking care of them. Rose sold her fine needlework, and took flowers that she grew to market, to help her family. She made and sold lace and embroidery to care for the poor, and she prayed and did penance in a little grotto that she had built. Otherwise, she became a recluse, leaving her room only for her visits to church.

Santa Rosa de Lima — Dominican Nuns of Summit, NJ

She attracted the attention of the friars of the Dominican Order. She wanted to become a nun, but her father forbade it, so she instead entered the Third Order of St. Dominic while living in her parents’ home. In her twentieth year she donned the habit of a tertiary and took a vow of perpetual virginity. She only allowed herself to sleep two hours a night at most, so that she had more hours to devote to prayer. She donned a heavy crown made of silver, with small spikes on the inside, in emulation of the Crown of Thorns worn by Christ.

St. Rose of Lima: Patroness of the Americas – Dominican Friars ...

For eleven years she lived this way, with intervals of ecstasy, and eventually died on 23 August 1617, at the young age of 31. It is said that she prophesied the date of her death. Her funeral was held in the cathedral, attended by all the public authorities of Lima.

She was the first American-born saint.
