Cloud Gazing on the eve of Yom Kippur

During the Days of Awe we remember the first human being, Adam Kadmon; as well as the fall from Paradise which connects us to the High Holy Day of Yom Kippur – highlighting fallibility, bringing a focus on forgiveness, soul-searching faith, compassion, humility, thoughtfulness, accepting responsibility & magnanimity.

Morgane Freedler

I am pondering this opportunity on the wheel of the year as I sit in my garden, taking in the 1st signs of death with the harvest. My gaze moves up with my thoughts, following the dazzling beauty of the clouds.

Ephemera Lydon

A very interesting meditation cloud gazing; part Rorschach, part cosmic divination. I have always felt called to watch the sky. I set aside time for this activity every day. Even for 5 minutes, much can be revealed. I remain watchful & act as witness to the messages – in the formations, in the wind, in my body, in all of nature.

How is dawn speaking today? What will dusk want? Noon brings its own power. The hummingbirds this year seem particularly urgent in their quest for sweetness. The milk weed is running with bright orange beetles. The Monarch & the cardinal couple talk & sway on the long stalks of Joe Pie weed eating seeds. The golden rod are bursting with buzzing mason bees. O look the Michaelmas daisies are huge this year. And my goodness the way the spider web catches the light…

I send out gratitude & love, & listen for the echo of the elementals.

Yes, despite the challenges it brings, Yom Kippur is a day of hope & optimism, in addition to a solemn day of soul-searching. The Day of Atonement provides a unique awareness of our own character & track record, as well as the opportunity to upgrade relationships with relatives, friends, associates & the community at-large.

Moving through the clouds is that a choir of Angels, see it there…?  They seem so active & willing to connect with those who are keen to look up & read the starry script, to intuit the augury without falling into illusion, to witness without judgment, to get out of the way & yet to participate fully.

Umbra Perchiazzi

The etheric realm is an open secret for those who have eyes to see. We can meet the Being of Christ in what weaves between us; this is the only way to atone. Look in, look up & join in the co-creation of our evolution.

See you there

Feast of the Cross – According legend the True Cross was discovered in 326 by Saint Helena, the mother of the Roman Emperor Constantine the Great, during a pilgrimage she made to Jerusalem. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre was then built at the site of the discovery, by order of Helena & Constantine. The church was dedicated nine years later, on this same date, with a portion of the cross placed inside it.

Other legends explain that in 614, that portion of the cross was carried away from the church by the Persians, & remained missing until it was recaptured by the Byzantine Emperor Heraclius in 628. Initially taken to Constantinople, the cross was returned to the church in 629.

The Subtle & Sublime

Tashina Suzuki

Last evening when the Sun was setting on the heat of the day, softening the oblique spear of light; a coolness wafted thru the bean plants & the sprawling pumpkin patch in our backyard. It was then that I saw Her.

The Sun in Virgo – the Virgin Mother holding a sheaf of wheat like a secret in her heart.
I stood with Her in that luminous space in Nature between the dense & the subtle.

Salvador Dali

I held my mind out in reverence, wondering: When does the subtle become physical? Where is it, this ineffable space, where one fades into the other? – When the subtle becomes heavy, when the etheric becomes matter?

Jeanie Southworth

This gesture – so delicate & quick, often veiled – enigmatic & challenging; a fleeting moment, eternal in its becoming – It is the womb of possibility, holding the mysteries of substance & transubstantiation.

Salventor Pellwers

It can also be the place where we fall – the error of the missed target – The overlooked opportunity – The grasping clench…

There, at the abyss – at this sacred threshold – a Goddess dwells, who holds out her hand to us. The Divine Feminine Spirit of a gentle Alchemy, awaits our response.

Rudolf Steiner’s Lectures on this day

by Zak D. Parsons

Everything that irritates us about others can lead us to an understanding of ourselves. ~ Carl Jung

ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

Dejah Hilliard

Birthday of Hector, who Rudolf Steiner said was a living individual, later to be incarnated as Hamlet (See GA139 / 15.9.12)

Consider one of his characters, Hector. If you have any time available, you ought to study the figure of Hector in the Iliad — how plastically he is described so that he stands as a complete personality before us; how we see his affection for his paternal city, Troy, his wife Andromache, his relationship to Achilles, and to his armies; and how he commanded them. Try to call up this man before your minds, this man who possessed all the tenderness of a husband, and who clung in the ancient way to his home city of Troy, and who suffered such disillusions as only really great men can. Remember his relation with Achilles. Hector, as presented by Homer, is a towering figure from very ancient times, a man of great all-embracing humanity, for of course what Homer is describing belongs to a period well before his own, in the darkness of the past. Hector stands out above all the others, all those figures who seem mythical enough in the eyes of modern men.

Now take this one figure. Skeptics and all kinds of philologists may indeed doubt that there ever was a Hector at all, in the same way as they doubt the existence of Homer. But anyone who takes into consideration what may be understood from a purely human viewpoint will be convinced that Homer describes only facts that actually occurred. Hector was a living person who strode through Troy, and Achilles and the other figures were equally real. They still stand before us as personages of real earthly life. We look back to them as people of a different kind from ourselves, who are difficult to understand but whom the poet is able to bring before our souls in every detail. Now let us place before our souls a figure such as Hector, one of the chief Trojan commanders, who is defeated by Achilles. In such a personage we have something that belongs to the old pre-Christian age, something by which we can measure what men were before the time when Christ lived on earth..

I cannot go into everything underlying the historical prototype of the poetical figure of Hamlet, but through the research of spiritual science, I can offer you a striking example of how a man, a spirit of ancient times, reappears in the post-Christian era. The real figure underlying Hamlet, as presented by Shakespeare, is Hector. The same soul that lived in Hamlet lived in Hector. It is just by such a characteristic example as this, and the striking way the two different souls manifest themselves, that we can interpret what happened in the intervening time. A personality such as that of Hector stands before us in the pre-Christian age. Then comes the intervention of the Mystery of Golgotha in human evolution, and the spark it kindled in Hector’s soul causes a figure, a prototype of Hamlet, to arise, of whom Goethe said, “This is a soul that is unable to deal with any situation and is not equal to its position, who is assigned tasks but is unable to fulfill them.” ~Rudolf Steiner

st-john-chrysostom

*Feast of St. John Chrysostom*

Christine Shields

The bee is more honored than other animals, not because she labors, but because she labors for others. ~Saint John Chrysostom

st-john-chrysostom-christ

(The name JOHN is an initiatory title, used not in the personal sense, but as a way to designate the True Human Being, & CHRYSOSTOM = Golden-Throat or Honeyed lips)John Chrysostom’s preaching, by word & example, epitomizes the role of the prophet to comfort the afflicted & to afflict the comfortable. For his honesty & courage he paid the price of a turbulent ministry as bishop, personal vilification & exile.

There is much intrigue surrounding this great preacher from Antioch. Brought to Constantinople after a dozen years of priestly service in Syria, John found himself the reluctant victim of an imperial ruse to make him bishop in the greatest city of the empire. Ascetic, unimposing, dignified, yet troubled by stomach ailments from his desert days as a monk, John became a bishop under the cloud of imperial politics.

If his body was weak, his tongue was powerful. The content of his sermons, his exegesis of Scripture, were never without an exquisite exclamation point. Sometimes the point stung the high & mighty. Some sermons lasted up to two hours.

His lifestyle at the imperial court was not appreciated by many courtiers. He offered a modest table to episcopal sycophants hanging around for imperial & ecclesiastical favors. John deplored the court protocol that accorded him precedence before the highest state officials. He would not be a kept man. His zeal led him to decisive action. Bishops who bribed their way into office were deposed.

Many of his sermons called for concrete steps to share wealth with the poor.

The rich did not appreciate hearing from John that private property existed because of Adam’s fall from grace any more than married men liked to hear that they were bound to marital fidelity just as much as their wives were. When it came to justice & charity, John acknowledged no double standards.

Aloof, energetic, outspoken, especially when he became excited in the pulpit, John was a sure target for criticism & personal trouble. He was accused of gorging himself secretly on rich wines & fine foods, & yet he was as skinny as a stick. Also his faithfulness as spiritual director to the rich widow, Olympia, provoked much gossip attempting to prove him a hypocrite where wealth & chastity were concerned. His actions taken against unworthy bishops in Asia Minor were viewed by other ecclesiastics as a greedy, uncanonical extension of his authority.

Theophilus, archbishop of Alexandria, & Empress Eudoxia were determined to discredit John. Theophilus feared the growth in importance of the Bishop of Constantinople & took occasion to charge John with fostering heresy. Theophilus & other angered bishops were supported by Eudoxia. The empress resented his sermons contrasting gospel values with the excesses of imperial court life. Whether intended or not, sermons mentioning the lurid Jezebel (1 Kings 9:1—21:23) & impious Herodias (Mark 6:17-29) were associated with the empress, who finally did manage to have John exiled. He died in exile in 407.

Open thou my mouth, that I may sing forth thy praises

Hidden behind the Mirage

Benny Whitley

I know you are tired dear friend. It’s all so much. And I know today is an emotional day. But together we can continue to ask urgent & difficult questions, so that we may share healing, which often comes thru shattering insights. These will help us achieve humanity’s highest evolution. Next year when we hit the third 7 year cycle, the possibility of the “I” can come in – IF – we look past the dust swirling in the repeated mirage, & meet this event with our collective Higher “I”.

Mandali: India and the World | Dhruvi Acharya | Ann Arbor District Library
Dhruvi Acharya

We can’t rest until we reveal what lies at the root of the corona – our individual & collective Crown – & the worldwide stranglehold it has caused.  It’s all connected. What are the deeper, spiritual realities? Which entities stand behind these attacks on humanity? What can we do to meet them? How can we be spiritually hygienic? What therapeutic practices can we employ for ourselves & the world?

Mindy Sommers

Is this present & ever mutating pandemic meant to be seen as part of a series of world-events – Will we dare to follow the threads? All of humanity is being called upon to respond in a radically transformative way. How do these events point to real questions of individual freedom – not a selfish me 1st freedom, but a true collective freedom based on love, good will & compassion toward everyone?

Van James

And above all, how does all this relate to the essential event of our time – The revealing of the Christ in the etheric; which remains largely hidden behind the veil of materialism?

What if in our work of deep listening & presencing, we see this milestone as the tolling of the bell – as a Spiritual epiphany…!?!

A vibration, that with our intention for healing, sets our bundles of rumbling DNA into initiation mode – where uncanny revelations are imminent…yay, I know it’s hard to be shaken awake in the middle of our regularly scheduled programing – And yep, it doesn’t matter if we’re a true believer or a work-a-day couch surfer- we are all invited to have our pat certainties torn out by the roots & replaced with a throbbing vision of cosmic hoopla… For Long-standing versions of reality are mutating – Stories that have remained fixed, are about to acquire unexpected wrinkles…& from the crack in the godhead new possibilities are pouring forth…

What I pray is that we won’t be satisfied with mediocre half-truths…That it is ok be focused on cutting out waste, fraud, & delusion; that it’s ok to be itchy to know more about the unacknowledged games that are being played…Frustration, I hope, will be our holy fuel…Unsweetened lemonade, I trust, will be our rejuvenating drink… These are blessings, my friend, not curses…We can see thru the misplaced acceptance of warped chunks of either or-ness…

Here stands a gaping opportunity to make a break for effervescent responsibility – True Human Freedom…And to take advantage, we’ll need to travel much lighter -So please peel off your heart-armor – polish your sun-shield – Power the rust off your sword – Wipe that forty-pound sneer of scorn & doubt off your face – Bury your broken-down theories by the wayside, & donate all your unnecessary props to the birds & the bees – Strip down – for where we’re going, all you’ll need is your good will & a fresh attitude…

As we strive to stand together in the light of wisdom’s humble love

Millions of Americans Commemorate 9/11 Terror Attacks

I end this 9/11 epiphany with:

THE “AMERICAN” or “THREEFOLD” VERSE sent by Rudolf Steiner to Ralph Courtney, a pioneer of Anthroposophy in North America for the Threefold Group in New York City, which later established the Threefold Community in Spring Valley (now Chestnut Ridge). This verse for the American spirit speaks of the inner unity of human beings and of support from the spiritual world for our efforts:

May our feeling penetrate
To the center of our hearts –
And seek, in love, to unite with those who share our goals
And with the spirits who look down benevolently
on our hearts earnest strivings
Sending us strength from realms of light
to illuminate our love.

1932 – Deathday of Fritz Lemmermayer an Austrian writer, journalist & closest childhood friend of Rudolf Steiner in Vienna. Fritz was a passionate anti-materialist, he wanted to devote his life to the creation & maintenance of spiritual values.

In 1883 he completed his novel “The Alchemist”. Rudolf Steiner met Lemmermayer again in 1886 in the circle of the poet Marie Eugenie delle Grazie.  An extensive correspondence attests to the close friendship between the two (see GA 38 ).

In ” My Life ” Steiner says: Fritz Lemmermayer, with whom I was later on terms of intimate friendship, I came to know at one of delle Grazie’s afternoons. A highly noteworthy man. Whatever interested him he expressed with inwardly measured dignity. In his outward appearance he resembled equally the musician Rubinstein and the actor Lewinsky. With Hebbel he developed almost a cult. He had definite views on art and life born out of the sagacious understanding of the heart, and these were unusually fixed. He had written the interesting and profound romance, Der Alchemist(3), and much besides that was characterized by beauty and depth. He knew how to consider the least things in life from the view-point of the most vital. I recall how I once saw him in his charming little room in a side-street in Vienna together with other friends. He had planned his meal: two soft-boiled eggs, to be cooked in an instantaneous boiler, together with bread. He remarked with much emphasis while the water was heating to boil the eggs for us: “This will be delicious!” In a later phase of my life I shall again have occasion to speak of him (see GA 028, p 141f )

POD (Poem Of the Day)

~Bloom upright skeleton
With soft flowers of bitter dust
Fetid in Autumn’s withering
Bloom, heart-head dreaming
My Crone womb carries you forward
Willing the grave to sprout from within
Bloom, soul-forces purified & ready
Let tears embrace the wind
To wipe blank eyes screen fixed & unfocused
Bloom now in freedom won

Sun Spear

Preparing for Michaelmas:

I watch the shadows lengthen. The angle of the sun, like the lance of Michael, a sunlit spear piercing awake my sleepy summer eyes, banishing the Sulphur, activating the iron in my blood. Am I ready to do battle with the dragon within?

If spiritual science is allowed to live in us & extend its transforming influence to our heart-space, what enters us as thoughts, is then changed, into the substance of light, into the purest light of thought. And in the living enthusiasm of the heart, this light of thought then rays out from our hearts into the macrocosm, as light of the redeemed intelligence of Michael; as enlivened human thought, which can be re-united with the world-thoughts of the gods.

Heart-Thinking is the essence of Michaelmas, as the festival of Enlightenment; where we can learn to experience an unfolding of our inner initiative & a free, strong, courageous will, that helps us fend off our lazy tendencies .

It is our job to strive to complete the never ending story, with the new Michaelic mysteries put forth by Rudolf Steiner, a true emissary of of this Sun Being, teaching us to count the human being as the 10th hierarchy. And so, work we must, as we stand once more on the edge of autumn.

See you there…

Rudolf Steiner’s Lectures on this day

ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

1828 – Birthday of Leo Tolstoy

1851 – Birthday of Mabel Collins

1901 – Deathday of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, French painter & illustrator

1907 – Rudolf Steiner writes the ‘Barr Documents’ while staying with Edouard Schure – These lectures were given on the fringe of the International Theosophical Congress held in Paris and attended by delegates from many countries. Rudolf Steiner himself attached a distinct importance to this course in Paris where he formulated a basic view of Esoteric Christianity which a few years later was to separate him radically from the Theosophical Society. In the 37th chapter of Rudolf Steiner, The Story of My Life [Rudolf Steiner Publishing Co., London and New York, 1928.] (written in 1924–25 shortly before his death) we find the following passage:

In the Paris cycle of lectures I brought forward a perception which had required a long process of “ripening” in my mind. After I had explained how the members of the human being — physical body; etheric body, as mediator of the phenomena of life; and the “bearer of the ego” — are in general related to one another, I imparted the fact that the etheric body of a man is female, and the etheric body of a woman is male. Through this a light was cast within the Anthroposophical Society upon one of the basic questions of existence which just at that time had been much discussed.

But the question was carried into the depths of the being of man. In his physical body man is bound up with the cosmos quite otherwise than in his etheric body. Through his physical body man stands within the forces of the earth; through his etheric body within the forces of the outer cosmos. The male and female elements were carried into connection with the mysteries of the cosmos.

This knowledge was something belonging to the most profoundly moving inner experiences of my soul; for I felt ever anew how one must approach a spiritual perception by patient waiting and how, when one has experienced the “ripeness of consciousness,” one must lay hold by means of ideas in order to place the perception within the sphere of human knowledge.

It is perhaps not without significance that it was in Paris, where Thomas Aquinas had elaborated some seven centuries earlier his Christ-oriented Scholasticism, that Rudolf Steiner gave his first course on an Esoteric Christian Cosmology appropriate to the dawn of the new Age of Light. Schuré’s notes in French of the 18 lectures, published in French in 1928, constitute the only record of this course. They now appear for the first time in English translation in their entirety in book form, readily available to the modern student of the Science of the Spirit. ~R. M. Querido

An Esoteric Cosmology – Schmidt Number: S-1321 – THE BIRTH OF THE INTELLECT AND THE MISSION OF CHRISTIANITY. “It is only of recent times that the truths of occultism have been the subject of public lectures. Formerly, these truths were only revealed in secret societies, to those who had passed through certain degrees of initiation and had sworn to obey the laws of the Order through the whole of their life. Today, man is entering upon a very critical period. Occult truths are beginning to be disclosed to the public. In a matter of twenty years or so, a certain number of them will already be common knowledge. Why is this? The reason is that humanity is entering upon a new phase which it is the object of this lecture to explain..” ~Rudolf Steiner

1945 – Plutonium bomb dropped on Nagasaki – the 2nd act of genocide ordered for testing purposes by President Harry Truman

1954 – The 6.7 M earthquake shakes northern Algeria. At least 6,243 people were killed

1965 – Hurricane Betsy makes its second landfall near New Orleans, leaving 76 dead 12 billion dollars in damages

1974 – Richard Nixon resigned as President following the Watergate scandal

1976 – Death day of Mao Zadong
