Days of Awe

Greetings friends on this Labor Day /New Moon/Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, (רֹאשׁ הַשָּׁנָה‎, literally “head of the year“) is the first of the High Holy Days or Yamim Noraim (Days of Awe), a two-day celebration that starts tonight at sunset, as the New Moon makes her way into the light. It weds seriousness with celebration & begins the 10 days of repentance that culminate in Yom Kippur. This festival is believed to be the anniversary of the creation of Adam & Eve, acknowledging their first actions toward the realization of humanity’s role in the world.

Jasper Johns

The 1st panel of the Foundation Stone Meditation asks us to ‘Practice Spirit Recalling.” Recognizing ancient traditions, we can renewal time honored themes that still apply today:

The New Year focuses our attention on themes of discernment, repentance, memory & the Divine presence in the world (The Shekinah). At the same time, Rosh Hashanah invites us to celebrate birth & creation on many levels. The liturgy suggests that Rosh Hashanah commemorates the creation of the world.

Family-oriented services often include a birthday cake for the world. Customs include sounding the shofar (a hollowed-out ram’s horn) & eating symbolic foods such as apples dipped in honey to emphasize the sweetness of starting the cycle of seasons once again; & round challah to remind us of the cycles of life.

What is your birthday wish for the world? Are you willing to personally practice themes like forgiveness, as you recall that the Divine essence is in all that lives? How can you bring sweetness into life – making everyday a ‘Day of Awe’ – pulsing with reverence & wonder? How are YOUR thoughts, words, deeds, adding to the re-creation of the world?

Rudolf Steiner’s Lectures on this day

ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

Deathday of Albinus a Platonist philosopher, who lived at Smyrna, pupil of Gaius the Platonist & teacher of Galen.  A short tract by him, entitled Introduction to Plato’s dialogues, has survived. After explaining the nature of the Dialogue, which he compares to a Drama, he  goes on to divide the Dialogues of Plato into four classes, logical, critical, physical, ethical, & mentions another division of them into Tetralogies, according to their subjects. He advises that the Alcibiades, Phaedo, Republic, & Timaeus, should be read in a series

1080 – Deathday of Magnus of Füssen, a missionary saint in southern Germany, also known as the Apostle of the Allgäu, a contemporary of Saint Gall & Saint Boniface

1522 – The Victoria, the only surviving ship of Ferdinand Magellan’s expedition, returns to Spain, becoming the first ship to circumnavigate the world

1729 – Birthday of Moses Mendelssohn, a creative & eclectic thinker whose writings on metaphysics & aesthetics, political theory & theology, together with his Jewish heritage, placed him at the focal point of the German Enlightenment for over three decades

1847 – Henry David Thoreau leaves Walden Pond & moves in with Ralph Waldo Emerson & his family in Concord, Massachusetts

1860 – Birthday of Jane Addams, sociologist & author, Nobel Prize laureate – I have a soft spot for this powerful lady – I went to Jane Addams Jr. High & the Hull House museum is close to where I live in Chicago. Jane Addams life’s work still resonates in a big way today. Social worker, suffragette & activist are just some of the titles that apply to her. In 1889, Jane founded a social settlement called Hull House, which supported thousands of people each week – mainly immigrants, the poor & the dispossessed. It became a model for similar communities in the future.

Jane studied medicine as a young adult but decided that wasn’t her calling. She was inspired during a trip to London when she visited the world’s first settlement house, Toynbee Hall. Within months, she opened the doors to a similar facility in her hometown of Chicago.

Originally conceived to give immigrants & the poor access to the arts, Hull House evolved according to the community’s needs. Along the way, Jane also challenged corrupt local officials, investigated health issues and lobbied against unfair laws.

Jane was way ahead of her time, a person who was making inquiries & putting her money where her mouth was into figuring out enormous social problems. She made a lot of progress in ways that are still really resonant. The legacy started at Hull House lives on, from juvenile courts & labor laws to playgrounds & public sanitation. The Mother of Social Work set a standard for how to help others.

33 – Beheading of John the Baptist

John the Baptist, truly the greatest of all Men – Still human, He hovers as an Eagle in the realm of the Angels. After his beheading He became the protector of the 12 disciples of Christ Jesus & especially of John the Evangelist.

TERRI DILL-SIMPSON

Did the Eagle land in the beginning of the 20th century on the shoulder of Rudolf Steiner to guide us towards a deeper understanding of the Mystery of Golgotha?

Nancy B Jackson

“Elijah was destined to be one of the ruling figures in the régime inaugurated by Moses. There had to be Individualities who were not wholly contained in the human personality; one part of their being was in the earthly personality and the other in the spiritual world. Elijah was an Individuality of this nature. Only part of his being was present in his personality on the physical plane; the Ego-hood of Elijah could not penetrate fully into his physical body. He must therefore be called a personality ‘filled with the Spirit’. A figure such as Elijah could not possibly be brought into existence through the normal forces by which other men are placed in the world. In the normal way the human being develops in the mother’s body in such a way that through physical processes the Individuality who has been incarnated previously simply unites with the physical embryo. This could not be so in the case of an Individuality such as Elijah. Other forces had to intervene, concerned with the part of the Individuality that reached into the spiritual world. His development was necessarily attended by influences working upon him from outside. Hence when such Individualities are incarnated they appear as men who are ‘inspired’, ‘impelled by the Spirit’. They appear as ecstatic personalities whose utterances far surpass anything that might issue from their normal intelligence.

The man who lived as ‘Elijah’ was an outstanding example of this. The words uttered by his mouth and the actions performed by his hands did not proceed only from the part of his being actually present in his personality; they were manifestations of divine-spiritual Beings in the background.

When this Individuality was born again he was to unite with the body of the child born to Zacharias and Elisabeth. We know from the Gospel itself that John the Baptist is to be regarded as the reborn Elijah. But in him we have to do with an Individuality who in his earlier incarnations had not habitually developed or brought fully into operation all the forces present in the normal course of life. In the normal course of life the inner power or force of the Ego becomes active while the physical body of the human being is developing in the mother’s womb. The Elijah-Individuality in earlier times had not descended deeply enough to be involved in the inner processes operating here. The Ego had not, as in normal circumstances, been stirred into activity by its own forces, but from outside. This was now to happen again. But the Ego was now farther from the spiritual world and nearer to the Earth, much more closely connected with the Earth than the Beings who had formerly guided Elijah. The transition leading to the amalgamation of the Buddha-stream with the Zarathustra-stream was now to be brought about.

Everything was to be rejuvenated. Thus it was the Nirmanakaya of Buddha which now stirred the Ego-force of John into activity, having the same effect as spiritual forces that had formerly worked upon Elijah. At certain times the being known as Elijah had been rapt in states of ecstasy; then the God spoke, filling his Ego with a force which could be communicated to the outer world. Now again a spiritual force was present — the Nirmanakaya of Buddha hovering above the head of the Nathan Jesus; this force worked upon Elisabeth when John was to be born, stimulated within her the embryo of John in the sixth month of pregnancy, and wakened the Ego. But being nearer to the Earth this force now worked as more than an inspiration; it had an actual formative effect upon the Ego of John. Under the influence of the visit of her who is there called ‘Mary’, the Ego of John the Baptist awoke into activity. The Nirmanakaya of Buddha was here working upon the Ego of the former Elijah — now the Ego of John the Baptist — wakening it and penetrating right into the physical substance.” ~Rudolf Steiner, from The Gospel of St. Luke

“If we pass on to the sixth chapter of Mark we hear fully described how King Herod had John the Baptist beheaded. The tortured conscience of Herod arouses a strange foreboding in him. When he hears all that has occurred through Christ Jesus he says, “John, whom I beheaded, has been restored to life!” Herod feels that, though the physical personality of John had gone away, he is now all the more present! He feels that his atmosphere, his spirituality — which was none other than the spirituality of Elijah, is still there. His tormented conscience causes him to be aware that John the Baptist, that is, Elijah, is still there.

But then something strange happens. We are shown how, after John the Baptist had met his physical death, Christ Jesus came to the very neighborhood where John had worked. I want you to take particular notice of a remarkable passage and not to skim over it lightly, for the words of the Gospels are not written for rhetorical effect, nor journalistically. Something very significant is said here. Jesus Christ appears among the throng of followers and disciples of John the Baptist, and this fact is expressed in a sentence to which we must give careful attention: “And as Jesus came out He saw a great crowd,” by which could be meant only the disciples of John, “and He had compassion on them …” (Mark 6:34.) Why compassion? Because they had lost their master, they were there without John, whose headless corpse we are told had been carried to his grave. But even more precisely is it said, “for they were like sheep who had lost their shepherd. And He began to teach them many things.” It cannot be indicated any more clearly how He teaches John’s disciples. He teaches them because the spirit of Elijah, which is at the same time the spirit of John the Baptist, is still active among them. Thus it is again indicated with dramatic power in these significant passages of the Mark Gospel how the spirit of Christ Jesus entered into what had been prepared by the spirit of Elijah-John. Even so this is only one of the main points, around which many other significant things are grouped.

I will now call your attention to one thing more. I have several times pointed out how this spirit of Elijah or John continued to act in such a way as to impress its impulses into world history. I have often mentioned that the soul of Elijah-John appeared again in the painter Raphael. This is one of those facts that call attention to the metamorphoses of souls that take place under the impetus given by the Mystery of Golgotha. Because it was also necessary that in the post-Christian era such a soul should work in Raphael through the medium of a single personality; what in ancient times was so comprehensive and world encompassing now appears in such a different personality as that of Raphael. Can we not feel that the aura that hovered round Elijah-John is also present in Raphael? That in Raphael there were such similarities to these two others that we could even say that this element was too great to be able to enter into a single personality but hovered round it, so that the revelations received by this personality seemed like an illumination? Such was indeed the case with Raphael!” ~Rudolf Steiner, Gospel of Mark: Lecture 3

“The truth is, my dear friends, this earthly personality of Raphael was completely yielded up and was only present through what Lazarus-John gave to this soul to be poured out into colour and line for all mankind.

Such was the life of this being. And it was so, that this Raphael life could only be, as it were, absolved in another life of thirty years — in Novalis. And so we see Raphael die young, Novalis die young — one being, who came forth from Elijah-John, appearing before mankind in two different forms, preparing through art and through poetry the true Michael mood of soul, sent down by the Michael stream as messenger to men on Earth.

And now we behold the wonderful artistic power of Raphael come to life again in Novalis in poetry that stirs and enraptures the hearts of men. All that through Raphael was given to human eyes to see, — of this could human hearts drink deep, when it came again in self portrait of Novalis.

When we consider the life of Novalis, what an echo we find there of the Raphael life for which Hermann Grimm had so fine an understanding! His beloved dies in her youth. He is himself still young. What is he going to do with his life now that she has died? He tells us himself. He says that his life on Earth will be henceforth to “die after her”, to follow her on the way of death. He wants to pass over already now into the super-sensible, to lead again the Raphael life, not touching the Earth, but living out in poetry his magic idealism. He would fain not let himself be touched by Earth life.

When we read the “Fragments” of Novalis, and give ourselves up to the life that flows so abundantly in them, we can discover the secret of the deep impression they make on us. Whatever we have before us in immediate sense-reality, whatever the eye can see and recognise as beautiful — all this, through the magic idealism that lives in the soul of Novalis, appears in his poetry with a well-nigh heavenly splendour. The meanest and simplest material thing — with the magic idealism of his poetry he can make it live again in all its spiritual light and glory.

And so we see in Novalis a radiant and splendid forerunner of that Michael stream which is now to lead you all, my dear friends, while you live; and then, after you have gone through the gate of death, you will find in the spiritual super-sensible worlds all those others — among them also the being of whom I have been speaking to you today — all those with whom you are to prepare the work that shall be accomplished at the end of the century, and that shall lead mankind past the great crisis in which it is involved”. The Last Address given by Rudolf Steiner The Individuality of Elias, John, Raphael, Novalis, Dornach, Michaelmas Eve, 1924

It’s Our Turn

Sheila Denkeline

Love is the result of wisdom reborn in the “I”. ~Rudolf Steiner

After working the path of the New Mysteries of Spiritual Science we are called to apply ourselves, & take the responsible steps of inner development from out of our own “I”. There is no guru, no dogma to follow. In the old mysteries one had to wait to be asked; now we must let wisdom give birth to love – which allows us to be guided by the Christic impulse within.

When we have cultivated with Anthroposophia the fruits of imaginative thinking, inspirational feeling, & intuitive willing, we come to realize that it is our duty to contribute something to the spiritual development of the future. This is the essential core of the New Mysteries.

If we can get passed the anti-social qualities of this consciousness soul age, we realize that the moment has arrived for us to give back to the Spiritual World. Just as the hierarchies bestowed on us their being substance for the evolution of humankind, so must we awaken in our “I” to participate in the work of further evolution – or not – we can be like the backward beings who have chosen to stay behind.

Michael as our Time Spirit is silent. He is awaiting what we will offer; He wills. In the future, worlds have to be built with human will, from our willing sacrifice – a dedication to offering up our higher Self for the Good of All – so that our Earth can become a Cosmos of Love – a development that leads from Wisdom to love thru the “I”.

Blue Moon-Tide

21 August 2021 – “Speaking with the Stars”: Tonight is the eve of the August Full Moon called by the Native American tribes in the Heartland – the Sturgeon Moon – because these large fish of the Great Lakes, are caught at this time of year. It’s also what is called a ‘Seasonal Blue Moon’!

Yes, we have two kinds of Blue Moons – monthly & seasonal.

A monthly Blue Moon is the second Full Moon in a calendar month with two Full Moons. Then, there’s a seasonal Blue Moon – the third Full Moon of an astronomical season that has four Full Moons.

In astronomy, a seasonal cross-quarter is the time between a Solstice or Equinox. Each season – winter, spring, summer or fall – lasts three months & usually has three Full Moons, occurring around 30 days apart. Because June’s Full Moon came just a few days after the June (Summer) Solstice, we will see four Full Moons in the current summer season, which ends at the September Equinox on Sept. 22.

The third Full Moon – our seasonal Blue Moon – will happen on Aug. 22 exact at 6:02 am CDTAll Full Moons are opposite the Sun, rising fully illuminated around sunset & setting around sunrise.

The August Full Moon is in Aquarius – the second of 2 in the Water Bearer’s sign. The Aquarius moon opposes the Leo Sun, so we can see how our personal experiences fit into a wider context; & how the collective energies play out for us in one-of-a-kind ways. We realize it’s not all about us, & embrace opportunities to be part of something bigger. At the same time, we recognize what makes us special—the authentic self that we were born to express. This Full Moon highlights our needs for both personal freedom & community with like-minded, like-hearted people.

It’s interesting to note that since last month’s Full Moon, Jupiter, which was in retrograde, has again returned to Aquarius. And while the beneficent king’s conjunction with Bella Luna amplifies this tension between individuality & interdependence, it also grows our feelings of goodwill toward one another. We might feel a stronger sense of solidarity with our fellow human beings. And this inspires us to envision a bigger, brighter future for all.

Aquarius, after all, is ruled by Uranus—our solar system’s radical revolutionary & ingenious innovator. And with Uranus still stationary after going retrograde on August 19, this Beings electric energy is all over this Blue Moon. Revolution starts within, by liberating our hearts & minds.

Also as Mars & Mercury in Virgo trine Uranus in Taurus, it may be easier than we expect to get ourselves unstuck. Mercury gives us clarity on where things have gotten stagnant in our lives, & helps us name what needs to change with uncanny precision. And while Uranus can be like a bull in a china shop at times, Mars channels this energy into carefully considered, conscientious action.

Still, we won’t have to wait too long for the energy to shift, as the Moon moves from Aquarius to Pisces just 41 minutes after this lunation. While both signs can be quite intuitive, their insights come in different ways. The Full Moon in Aquarius brings revelations like a bolt from the blue, in sudden flashes than can be just as unsettling as they are electrifying. But once the moon slips into Pisces, it’s a more nebulous kind of knowing—gentle, dreamy, & effortlessly empathic.

Then, just nine hours after the Full Moon, the Sun moves on from Leo to Virgo. This shifts our focus away from being seen, & toward being of service. We’ll be less concerned with how others are perceiving us, & more interested in aligning with our own integrity.

Even so, with Saturn retrograde in Aquarius, we’re not just responsible for ourselves—we’re also being held accountable to each other. Fortunately, as Venus in Libra trines Saturn on August 23, it doesn’t have to be an unpleasant experience. Right now cooperation is easier to come by, helping us to build more harmonious relationships. ~thanks to nasa.gov & astrology.com

Feast day of Our Lady of Knock*

1858 – Birthday of Archduke Rudolf von Habsburg, Crown Prince of Austria. In 1889, he died in a suicide pact with his mistress, Baroness Mary Vetsera. His death left no direct male heir. As a consequence, his brother, Archduke Karl Ludwig, was next in the line. His death in 1896 made his oldest son, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir presumptive. In 1914, Franz Ferdinand’s assassination precipitated World War I & sparked a chain of events that caused the dynasty’s collapse. Rudolf Steiner spoke quite a bit about his former incarnations, the most important being as Nero, in Karmic Relationships Vol. 2, lectures 7, 27 & Vol. 4 lecture 24

THE IRON OF THE GODS AGAINST ANXIETY AND FEAR

Sneha Singh

As we have discussed, every year the cosmic iron enters Earth’s atmosphere, following the rhythms of the cosmos. With them they bring the metal sacred to Mars, & the forces harnessed in it. But why is that? What’s the reason behind this charming show that urges us to make wishes? And what does all this have to do with iron?

According to Roman Catholic lore, the August meteor showers are the “lacrime di San Lorenzo”—St. Lawrence’s tears- the last of the seven deacons of Rome to die, martyred on 16 August 258, during the persecution of the emperor Valerian.

When he was summoned before the executioners, Lawrence was ordered to bring all the wealth of the Church with him. He showed up with a handful of crippled, poor, & sick people, & when questioned, replied that “These are the true wealth of the Church.” He was immediately sent to his death, being cooked alive on a gridiron.

Legend has it that one of his last words was a joke – he quipped to his killers: “Turn me over, I’m done on this side!”

After that, Catholics began calling the August meteors the “tears of St. Lawrence,” even though the celestial phenomenon pre-dates the saint, being associated with Perseus.

Some Italian lore also holds that the fiery bits of debris seen during a meteor shower are representative of the coals that killed St. Lawrence. This correspondence with the myth is very interesting, it finds a valid explanation in the results of a spiritual-scientific investigation.

According to Anthroposophy in Summer a specific process takes place in the human organism, as light & heat grow stronger & more potent. This is a sulphurising process. From a spiritual perspective human beings start shining ‘like glow-worms’ surrounded by a yellow-bluish “sulphur” flame. This flame is associated with the spiritual beings of ‘fallen light’ which want to take advantage of human freedom for their purposes.

From the standpoint of the cosmos this is actually a majestically beautiful sight, for it is in this glorious astral light that human beings shine out into the cosmos during the ‘Dog Days of Summer’, but at the same time it gives occasion for the Ahrimanic power to draw near to humanity. For this adversarial power is very closely related to the sulphurising process in the human organism.

We can see how, on the one hand, the human being shines out into the cosmos in the St. John’s light, & on the other, how the dragon-like serpent-form of Ahriman winds its way among the human beings shining in the astral light & tries to ensnare & curtail us, to draw us down into the realm of half-conscious sleep & illusion. ~Rudolf Steiner, The Four Seasons & the Archangels

This process of subtle combustion in the human organism causes what comes so natural in summer – a dream-like state where human instincts arise, gaining power over the forces of consciousness & awareness. Who hasn’t experienced this during summer? And it’s not for nothing, it is important to have that outbreath to come in contact with the cosmic reaches.

But we need to understand that from this perspective the ahrimanic forces are not interested in awakening clairvoyance in humanity. That would be an old form of clairvoyance, anyway. All they want, is to control human beings – fooling us thru our own lower instincts.

When this process of expansion comes to its peak at the Summer Solstice—we must start to come back down to earth or there is a danger we fall victim to the Luciferic influences that would draw us away from life. But the wisdom of the cosmos gives human beings the antidote. The balancing impulse to counter the forces of sulphur rising from the ground, is the cosmic iron.

Patti Vennery

And when in high summer, from a particular constellation, meteors fall in great showers of cosmic iron, then this cosmic iron, which carries an enormously powerful healing force, is the weapon which the gods bring to bear against Ahriman, as dragon-like he tries to coil round the shining forms of men.

The force which falls on the earth in the meteoric iron is indeed a cosmic force whereby the higher gods endeavour to gain a victory over the Ahrimanic powers, when autumn comes on. And this majestic display in cosmic space, when the August meteor showers stream down into the human shining in the astral light, has its counterpart — so gentle and apparently so small — in a change that occurs in the human blood.

This human blood, which is in truth not such a material thing as present-day science imagines, but is permeated throughout by impulses from soul and spirit, is rayed through by the force which is carried as iron into the blood and wages war there on anxiety, fear and hate.

The processes which are set going in every blood-corpuscle when the force of iron shoots into it are the same, on a minute human scale, as those which take place when meteors fall in a shining stream through the air. This permeation of human blood by the anxiety-dispelling force of iron is a meteoric activity. The effect of the raying in of the iron is to drive fear and anxiety out of the blood”. ~Rudolf Steiner, The Four Seasons & the Archangels

From this perspective we can contemplate the amazing show of the meteor showers which go on into September as we make our way toward Michaelmas. We can look at them knowing that the forces of the cosmos are at work to help us.

Fear & anxiety are two adversarial forces, that especially this year, have been ensnaring us all. So this makes having an awareness of the meteor showers even more important – worthy of contemplation & active participation.

May the cosmic iron of the gods be with you, to defeat all the inner & outer obstacles that stand in your way.

Calendar of the Soul by Rudolf Steiner, Translation by Roy Sadler

RUDOLF STEINER’S CALENDAR OF THE SOUL
translated (with added titles) by Roy Sadler
Each new season is generally recognised as beginning with the
solstice or equinox… but do we consider the first 3 weeks of June
still to be spingtime, and those of September still to be summer?
This week’s Soul Calendar quartet is unique. It is the only square
quartet, and the only one with the words of ‘threatening’ (v46 & v7)
and ‘death’ (v20 & v33). They are verses testing the soul, and to me
they appear as initiation verses preparing for a new season – which then
fits better with temperatures & daylight hours than waiting another month.
And after the climax of the Perseid meteor showers, heralding the season
of Michael, it is appropriate to regard this week as a transition verse
(one of four, reducing each season to just 12 weeks).

LAMMASTIDE IV
Transition from Summer to Autumn
The Nemesis Of Self
v20
So I begin to feel my being, I,
who far from universal being
would perish, I
who building only on the ground of me
must die.

Transition from Autumn to Winter
The Nemesis Of The World
ALL HALLOWSTIDE IV
v33
And so I come to feel the world,
which left without my soul’s communion
would be just frosty, empty life
that powerless to recreate itself in souls
could in itself alone find only death.
