Will to Love

Rudolf Steiner and Art

A friend of Rosemary McMullen shared this from Marianne Williamson:

“I was watching a video the other day where a man was quoting Rudolf Steiner. Steiner was the first metaphysical writer I ever read and his ideas changed the course of my life.

The quote was something Steiner had said about how modern technology has made it “harder to be human.” I thought about that in terms of its profound contemporary relevance. It is harder to be human today. Everything from the food we eat to the air we breathe to electromagnetic waves to economic conditions to personal and political mean-spiritedness and prejudice – those things do make it harder to be human. Steiner was saying we must deepen our spiritual practice to compensate for the assault on our core humanity, and boy is that ever true.

But I also find, at a time when my practice of “A Course in Miracles” is deeper than it’s been in a while, that I experience a happiness that allows me to float above the rough terrain. The stress of this era makes our spiritual practice the most powerful tool for the reclamation of inner peace. In ACIM it says that the effects of love are maximal. God’s love isn’t limited by what a mess we have made of the world.

So there is an underground revolution going on these days, an army of radical lovers infusing society with a different kind of consciousness. You are quite probably one of them if you are even reading this. And we are everywhere. We work in every job and we live in every place. We come from all religions and no religion. We have heard the call to redeem the world for the sake of the human heart, and we are doing the best we can.

Everything we need will be given us. Everyone we need to meet we will meet. All support we need will be provided if we stay devoted to the task. That is my strongest, most firm belief, and also my experience. We are here for a mighty purpose and none of us is alone.

We need a quantum change and there IS a quantum change. It is us, when our hearts are open to love. It is us, when our hearts are open to forgiveness. It is us, when our hearts are open to peace. And we are everywhere.”

Young waxing crescent moon adorns the March evening twilight.

15 March 2021 – “Speaking with the Stars”: At new moon, Bella Luna passes between the Earth & Sun, making her invisible in our sky. As the moon waxes, going from New moon to Full moon, Bella Luna moves about 1/2 degree eastward of the Sun per hour, or 12 degrees per day. That’s why the waxing moon will become easier to see after its initial evening appearance.

ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

Blessings on this ‘Ides of Marchwhich marked the Feast of the goddess of the New Year which was celebrated on this day in ancient Rome.

Beware The Ides Of March!" But What Are They? - HistoryExtra

Of course we know it as the day in In 44 BC when Julius Caesar, dictator of Rome, is stabbed to death in the Roman Senate house by 60 conspirators led by Marcus Junius Brutus and Gaius Cassius Longinus on March 15.

Caesar was elected pontifex maximus, or “high priest,” allegedly by heavy bribes. Among other achievements, Caesar conquered all of Gaul, made the first Roman inroads into Britain, and won devoted supporters in his legions. However, his successes also aroused Pompey’s jealousy, leading to the collapse of their political alliance.

The Roman Senate supported Pompey and asked Caesar to give up his army, which he refused to do. Caesar led his legions across the Rubicon River from Cisalpine Gaul to Italy, declaring war against Pompey and his forces.

He returned to Rome and was made dictator for life. As sole Roman ruler, Caesar launched ambitious programs of reform within the empire. The most lasting of these was his establishment of the Julian calendar, which, with the exception of a slight modification and adjustment in the 16th century, remains in use today. He also planned new imperial expansions in central Europe and to the east. In the midst of these vast designs, he was assassinated by a group of conspirators who believed that his death would lead to the restoration of the Roman Republic. However, the result of the “Ides of March” was to plunge Rome into a fresh round of civil wars, out of which Octavian, Caesar’s grand-nephew, would emerge as Augustus, the first Roman emperor, destroying the republic forever.

“Holding the Chalice of Balance with Archangel Raphael –
An exploration of the Vernal Equinox” with Hazel Archer-Ginsberg

At the time of the Spring Equinox, Raphael, Archangel of the East & the Element of Air, is active as the great Cosmic Physician. The Easter-Tide works on us thru the spiritual healing of inspiration, provided by Raphael who is now in the etheric heights, waving a helix of shining vitality. Raphael uses the caduceus as a wand, to mingle air & fire, water & earth, transmuting them into healing forces; working & weaving in the cosmos, & entering into our conscious inspiration of light. Yes this is a goal of our human evolution, to be able to breathe light. Spiritual Science calls it ‘moral breathing’ – to ‘inhale evil & exhale the good’. Could the Corona crisis be calling us to this task? We have a powerful ally to assist us every year at this special time of balance.

1867 – Birthday of Marie Steiner von Sivers – born into an aristocratic family in Włocławek, Poland, then part of Russia. Her father, Jacob was from a respected German-Danish family, who lived in Russia for 250 years with ties to the government of Latvia & Estonia. As lieutenant general, he had a high position in the Russian military. Caroline Baum, Marie’s mother, was the daughter of a German doctor, born & raised on the White Sea, in northern Russia.

Marie Steiner-von Sivers – Raffael-Verlag

Marie was a small, petite child of great skill & motivation. She had light-gold-blond hair & bright blue eyes. She was very receptive to the impressions of nature, in the countryside & by the sea.
When Marie was 7 years old, the family moved to the Baltic Sea & after her father retired, the family moved to St. Petersburg & settled there.

Marie attended a German private school. The principal called her ‘the young Schiller’. Marie was very shortsighted when she was a young girl, but had a very sensitive, almost oversensitive hearing. At the age of 11, she began to recite poetry.

Her family had a rather formal lifestyle based on aristocratic norms. Thinking was conservative & full of prejudice. They only associated with other rich German families. Marie found little understanding for her quest for higher values & life was made difficult for her to pursue these interests. Her parents wouldn’t allow her to be taught Greek, so she studied on her own.

Marie Steiner-von Sivers

Her father died when she was 15 years, & as she was becoming a teenager she had a lot of conflict with her mother. At the age of 17, they traveled abroad, to Berlin, Vienna & Switzerland. A new world opened up for Marie. This began a long, 10-year period, in which she struggled to realize her goals in social life. She joined the women’s movement, fought for women’s right to education & for the establishment of women’s universities. She cared about social & hygienic improvements for the population & contributed to school foundations & charity events, where she also appeared as an actress in stage plays. She felt this to be her calling, but again family disappoval & her own misgivings of the ‘immoral nature’ of the profession made her turn away.

After graduating from the German school, her family wouldn’t allow her to study linguistic & comparative religions like she wanted. She had to fight for permission to attend a Russian high school to obtain a teacher’s diploma. Afterwards she taught at a proletarian German school in St. Petersburg. There, she damaged her vocal cords & had to undergo surgery, making it difficult for her to speak for some time. She later considered this to be a karmic destiny forcing her to make speaking ‘organ-free’ according to Rudolf Steiner’s intentions.

Marie Steiner-von Sivers - Wikipedia

As life in the family became harder for Marie, she decided at age 22 to go live with her brother Jacob. She hoped to get closer to the meaning of life by working among the simple people. In her diary she wrote: ‘Where can I find the truth?’

Marie Steiner-von Sivers – Seite 2 – Raffael-Verlag

Her brother’s estate was located in the so-called Waldai, a slightly hilly, swampy area south of Novgorod. Marie helped her brother manage the estate. She set up a hospital that worked with homeopathic remedies, & a vegetarian diet. She provided emergency aid to refugees & set up a Sunday school for the village children. But the population met the two rich idealists with distrust & rejection. They were confronted with superstitions of all kinds, & so only the Sunday school was really accepted by the population.

Forschungsstelle Kulturimpuls - Biographien Dokumentation

Marie had a serious accident during this time: she fell down a staircase & injured herself so badly that she couldn’t move for several days.

When her brother died a year later, she had to return to her family in St. Petersburg. She was now 25 years old.

Peter Selg, Wir müssen vorwärts. Rudolf Steiner und Marie Steiner - von Sivers - Zaailing

The story goes that Marie von Sivers “appeared one day” at one of Rudolf Steiner’s early lectures in 1900. In the autumn of 1901, she posed the question to Steiner, “Would it be possible to create a spiritual movement based on European tradition and the impetus of Christ?” Rudolf Steiner later reported: ‘With this, I was given the opportunity to act in a way that I had only previously imagined. The question had been put to me, and now, according to spiritual laws, I could begin to answer it’.

Marie Steiner-von Sivers & Rudolf Steiner were married on Christmas Eve 1914, & she was one of his closest colleagues. Marie von Sivers collaborated with Steiner for the rest of his life & carried his work beyond his death in 1925 until her own death in 1948. She accompanied him & helped him as secretary, translator, editor, & organizer of his lecture tours & other public activities. She assisted Steiner’s work with her own resources & in 1908 founded the Philosophical-Theosophical Press (later Philosophical-Anthroposophical) to publish Steiner’s work.

Archivmagazin 7. Maart 2017 Marie Steiner-von Sivers - Zaailing

She made a great contribution to the development of anthroposophy, particularly in her work on the renewal of the performing arts (eurythmy, speech & drama), & the editing & publishing of Rudolf Steiner’s literary estate.

LA VITA E L'ATTIVITA' DI MARIE STEINER | Ecoantroposophia

Starting in 1912, the art of eurythmy was developed by Rudolf Steiner. Under Marie Steiner-von Sivers’ guidance, it developed in three directions, as a stage art, as an integral part of Waldorf pedagogy, & as a therapeutic method. Under her tutelage, two schools of eurythmy were founded, in Berlin & in Dornach, Switzerland.

Marie Steiner

Marie von Sivers was trained in recitation & elocution & made a study of purely artistic speaking. She gave introductory poetry recitals at Steiner’s lectures & assisted him in the development of the 4 Mystery Dramas (1910–1913). With her help, Steiner conducted several speech & drama courses with the aim of raising these forms to the level of true art.

Marie Steiner-von Sivers – Raffael-Verlag

Marie died on December 27th 1948, after making a reconciliation prompted by Ita Wegman.

CREATIVE SPEECH from ‘Das Goetheanum,’ 7th March, 1926 By Marie Steiner von Sivers

“SPEECH reveals to the human being their divine nature; the sounds of speech are creative forces which unite us with our spiritual origin and enable us, once again, to find the path leading to the spirit. Speech raises the human being above the level of the animal; it leads us back to the Divine within our Ego. That spark from the Divine Ego, which, issuing forth, prepared itself to become human, had of necessity, as it traveled the path leading into the material world, to unite itself with the forces of destruction. When the densifying process worked too strongly, damming up the spirit, as it were, then the form could be cast off by the ever-recurring forces of death and change. Thus there arose the animal kingdom, which may be likened to a kind of extended alphabet, containing within it all that burdened humanity too heavily when we carried it compressed within the limits of our own being. In the human being it was able to be so far clarified that it could develop into the Word, into Speech. Sound, tone in the animal kingdom cannot rise to the level of speech. It remains mere noise in the case of cold-blooded animals, and, in the case of warm-blooded animals, inarticulate sound. Even in its most beautiful form, in the song of the birds, cosmic tone cannot fully reveal itself; the song of the birds is at most only its faintest echo. It is in speech that the individual force of the Ego first finds expression through tone and becomes aware of its own being. Through speech, cosmic forces can, as it were, focus themselves in an individual Ego and from out this Ego work creatively once more.

When the human being raises to the upright position, when we change from the horizontal position natural to the animal to the vertical position of the human being, we free the forces of speech. The child is overshadowed by these forces; as their individuality develops they become more and more strongly united with them. The child does not say ‘ I ’ of themselves so long as their utterance is mere incoherent babbling. In personal desire, in egoism, the lower ego in the first place struggles through, expressing itself in wishes and desires, afterwards working its way through to feeling and thence into thought. Thought enters into the human being through the gate of speech. Pictures, imaginations are in this way raised up into the consciousness. Through this interplay of processes the human being becomes a thinking being.

A ray from the spiritual essence of the Sun enters into the human being through the mind. In the German language there is a reflection of this in the words ‘Sonne’ (Sun) and ‘Sinn’ (Mind), where the all-embracing, all-enclosing vowel sound ‘ O ’ is transformed into an arrow of light in the vowel sound ‘ E ’ (ee)”.

We are looking forward to seeing you at

The Easter-Tide works on us thru the spiritual healing of inspiration, when we can open to the crowning of all truths found in the healing breath of humankind. Reconciliation at the Intersection of the Sacred Masculine/Feminine and Activism
youthpassageways.org

I had the honor of meeting Pat McCabe (Weyakpa Najin Win = Woman Stands Shining) a Diné (Navajo) mother, grandmother, activist, artist, writer, ceremonial leader, & international speaker, at the YIP 13 Initiative Forum recently. Her blessings have stayed with me, & so I wanted to share something she wrote for ‘International Women’s Month’ March 2021:

My Greetings to Women’s Nation on this Sacred Day!

My journey to be able to see you, to be able to receive your embrace has been long. It was presented to me early, that we were competitors, that you were suspicious, and not to be trusted. And since you were told the same, sometimes you were suspicious, and not to be trusted. Sometimes I was suspicious, and not to be trusted. It was confusing. But eventually, as I came to prayer, and into ceremony, the Truth has made its way through the conundrum, as it always seems to, and now, there you stood, my sister, my deepest ally in the re-membering, re-learning, re-embodying, this mysterious Way of the Holy Earth Surface Walker, Life-Bringer, Life-Bearer. She who stands synonymous with Earth, synonymous with Life, Water Bearer, standing with the Full Authority of the Mother Earth behind her, through her, as her, always charged with asking The People: Are we placing Life at the Center, at the very Center of all that we do?

I have bled for Life, into the Earth, into the dream world with you, and all that we witnessed, co-witnessed, cannot be unseen, undone, or erased, by a world asleep to, or fearful of, the Medicine of Woman. We share this bond. And as we, together, begin to trust ourselves, begin to truly hold and allow the Truth of our Sacred Influence, our co-Creation with Mother Earth and with Life, together we may turn to our brothers, to our lonely, hurting brothers, and finally, offer to them our care. Our nurturing, nourishing care. Our power no longer residing in the crippling withholding of our powerful love, but now we may know, just as the Earth, our Beauty and our Strength will always come from our Radical Abundance and our Fearless Generosity. Our source, our Source, inexhaustible. Our Source not the attention of men, but instead the eternal conversation between Earth and Holy Star. Now I dress for the Sun, Earth Daughter, witness to a passionate love, recipient of the passionate love, passing between my Mother and Father. As my Mother is blessed, and embraced, and Awakened with Light, with Life, with Love, so too am I.

And in this way I travel, arm in arm with you, to bless, and to bring the way of Belonging, back to a bewildered body, lost in politic.

I pray for your heart to keep its softness, its suppleness (No, you don’t love too much!) I pray you keep your fearless generosity – let all the children be fed! I pray you may receive the quiet look of gratitude from our brothers as we, together, grow into an Unshakable Sisterhood, able, willing, prepared, to make a place for the long awaited return of a Sacred Masculine, fully in service to Life. Blessings of every kind flow to you, my sister, today, and in all the days to come.

ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

The Transsexual Emperor: Elagabalus, Topoi and Gender in Rome | Holistic History

222 – Emperor Elagabalus is assassinated, along with his mother, Julia Soaemias, by the Praetorian Guard during a revolt. Their mutilated bodies are dragged through the streets of Rome before being thrown into the Tiber. Elagabalus served as a priest of the Syrian god Elagabal, barely 14 years old, when he became emperor, initiating a reign remembered mainly for sex scandals &religious controversy.

Elagabalus showed a disregard for Roman religious traditions & sexual taboos. He replaced the traditional head of the Roman pantheon, Jupiter, with Elagabalus. He forced leading members of Rome’s government to participate in religious rites celebrating this deity, over which he personally presided. Elagabalus was supposedly “married” as many as five times, lavished ‘favors’ on male courtiers &  was reported to have prostituted himself in the imperial palace. He developed a reputation among his contemporaries for extreme eccentricity, decadence, & zealotry. His behavior estranged the Praetorian Guard, the Senate, & the common people alike.

Did Alexander the Great Arrange His Father's Murder? - HISTORY

336 BC – Deathday of Attalus important courtier of king Philip II of Macedonia.

Attalus’ niece Cleopatra Eurydice married king Philip II of Macedonia. At the wedding, Attalus made a prayer that Cleopatra give birth to a male heir. This was seen as a direct insult to Alexander the Great.

Philip II appointed Attalus & Parmenion as commanders of the advance force that would invade the Persian Empire in Asia Minor. After Philip II had been assassinated & Alexander became king, Cleopatra Eurydice, her two children, & Attalus were all killed.

According to a story of Aristotle‘s, Attalus sexually assaulted Pausanias of Orestis in retribution for besmirching the reputation of Attalus’ friend (possibly relation), also named Pausanias, an event that led to the latter Pausanias’s death. Philip II assassination by Pausanias of Orestis has been tied to this affair since Pausanias was upset that Phillip had not punished Attalus.

At the time of the accession of Alexander the Great to the Macedonian throne, Attalus was stationed with Parmenion & the Macedonian advance army in Asia Minor. In the wake of Phillip II’s death, it is alleged by hostile sources that Demosthenes of Athens wrote a letter to Attalus promising Athens’ support if the two made war on Alexander.

Attalus submitted Demosthenes’ letters to Alexander & pledged his support to the king. However, Alexander had Attalus killed, remembering the past insult of Attalus. Even without the resentment between the two men, Alexander probably felt Attalus was too ambitious to remain alive, & would have good reason for revenge after the deaths of Cleopatra Eurydice & her children.

St. Sophronius I of Jerusalem was the Patriarch of Jerusalem from 634 to 638. He was patriarch during the time that… | Catholic saints, Christianity, Greek orthodox

638 – Deathday of Sophronius of Jerusalem, the Patriarch of Jerusalem venerated as a saint in the Eastern Orthodox & Catholic Churches. He was a monk & theologian who was the chief protagonist for Orthodox teaching in the doctrinal controversy on the essential nature of Jesus & his volitional acts.

Sophronius was of Byzantine Greek, as well as Syrian Arab descent. A teacher of rhetoric, Sophronius became an ascetic in Egypt & then entered the monastery of St. Theodosius near Bethlehem. Traveling to monastic centres in Asia Minor, Egypt, & Rome, he accompanied the Byzantine chronicler St. John Moschus, who dedicated to him his celebrated tract on the religious life, Leimõn ho Leimõnon (Greek: “The Spiritual Meadow”) (and whose feast day in the Eastern Orthodox Church, 11 March is shared with Sophonius’)

He traveled to Alexandria, Egypt, & to Constantinople to persuade the respective patriarchs to renounce Monothelitism, a heterodox teaching that espoused a single, divine will in Christ to the exclusion of a human capacity for choice. Sophronius’ extensive writings on this question are all lost.

Although unsuccessful in this mission, Sophronius was elected patriarch of Jerusalem in 634. Soon after his enthronement he forwarded his noted synodical letter to Pope Honorius I & to the Eastern patriarchs, explaining the orthodox belief in the two natures, human & divine, of Christ, as opposed to Monothelitism.

In 637, after the conquest of Jerusalem by Muslim armies, the Muslim caliph Umar ibn al-Khattab came to Jerusalem & toured the city with Sophronius. During the tour of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the time for the Muslims’ prayer came, & despite Sophronius’s offer to Umar to pray inside the Church, Umar chose to pray outside. The caliph’s reason for declining to pray there was because in the future Muslims might say that Umar prayed here & use it as an excuse to build a mosque there. Therefore, Muslims are not allowed to build a mosque there. So appreciating the caliph’s intelligence Sophronius gave the keys of the church to him. Unable to refuse it the caliph gave it to a family of Muslims from Medina. The keys of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre still remain with the Muslim family.

At the time of the Spring Equinox, Raphael, Archangel of the East & the Element of Air, is active as the great Cosmic Physician. The Easter-Tide works on us thru the spiritual healing of inspiration, when we can open to the crowning of all truths found in the healing breath of humankind. In the Spring, the Easter event is recalled in many cultures & although the Mystery of Golgotha entered into the evolution of the Earth as a once-and-for-all event, it is renewed in us each year.

So whenever you want to take a magic twisty leap into the big fresh future, be willing to engage in one last wrestling match with the past – often accompanied by a slap in the face from the future.

The Silence of St Thomas Aquinas 097 Painting by William Hart McNichols

1274 – Deathday of Thomas Aquinas, a Dominican Friar & Theologian, “The prince of Scholastics”. Aquinas, who is most renowned for his Five Ways of Proving the Existence of God, believed that both faith and reason discover truth, a conflict between them being impossible since they both originate in God. Nickname in school=The ‘dumb ox’ – also known as the ‘Angelic Doctor’. “It must be realized that Thomas Aquinas, in the 13th Century, attained the concepts and ideas he elaborated in his writings in a completely different way from the way ideas are acquired today. One must think of his books as being inspired by a spirit from the Hierarchy of the Angeloi and that he recorded what came from a higher consciousness” ~Rudolf Steiner, The Karma of Materialism

Believing that reason can, in principle, lead the mind to God, Aquinas defended reason’s legitimacy, especially in the works of Aristotle. The philosophy of Aquinas continues to offer insights into many lingering problems in Metaphysics, the Philosophy of Mind, & the Philosophy of Religion & Ethics.

In Rudolf Steiner’s historic sketch of the life of thought in the Middle Ages, he shows how Albertus Magnus ( an earlier incarnation  of Ita Wegman) & Thomas Aquinas ( an earlier incarnation of Aristotle & Rudolf Steiner himself) & the Scholastics of the 12th century gave an impetus towards what in the twentieth century has come to be known as Spiritual Science, or Anthroposophy.

The Middle Ages would not have produced what is called Scholasticism — the philosophy of Thomas Aquinas and Albertus Magnus and the other Scholastics — if this philosophy, this world conception, with all its social consequences, had not been inspired by the most important thought of the Church, by the Easter thought. In the vision of the descending Christ, Who lives for a time in man on Earth and then goes through the Resurrection, that soul impulse was given which led to the particular relation between faith and science, between knowledge and revelation which was agreed upon by the Scholastics. That out of man himself, only knowledge of the sensible world can be acquired, whereas everything connected with the super-sensible world has to be gained through revelation — this was determined basically by the way the Easter thought followed upon the Christmas thought.” ~Rudolf Steiner, The Cycle of the Year as Breathing-Process of the Earth

Thomas Aquinas made himself thoroughly familiar with the world conception of Aristotle, who becomes, as it were, his master in the life of thought…For centuries, he is il maestro di color che sanno, the master of those who know, as Dante expresses the veneration for Aristotle in the Middle Ages.

“Thomas Aquinas had intended on the one hand to investigate the world through physical research and intellectual knowledge but, on the other hand, that he had wanted to supplement this intellectual knowledge with the truths of revelation. But he had done that precisely to gain access to the unifying principle of the world.” ~Rudolf Steiner, Dornach, 12 June 1923

Of the great Dominicans, St. Thomas Aquinas is especially noteworthy because in him the influence of the astral body of Christ was manifest to a high degree.”

St. Francis of Assisi and Thomas Aquinas had copies of the astral body of Jesus of Nazareth woven into their souls, and it is this fact that allowed them to be such dynamic teachers. They worked from a sphere in which Christ had once lived.

In some cases external events such as natural catastrophes or similar things enhance this weaving of spiritual bodies into the soul of the recipient. It is said of St. Thomas Aquinas that lightning struck and killed his little sister in the room where he happened to be standing, but spared him. He interpreted this lightning bolt next to him to the effect that elemental forces were necessary to help him take up the copy of the astral body of Jesus of Nazareth. Elisabeth of Thüringen also had an imprint of the astral body of Jesus of Nazareth in her soul”. ~ Rudolf Steiner, The Principle of Spiritual Economy, Rome, March 28, 1909

Ita Wegman’s Deathday

On this 15th day of Lenten-Tide I am deeply immersed in the YIP 13 Initiative Forum, but since it’s Ita Wegman’s deathday I felt the need to touch in. Here is a thought: Mother Earth gives us clues about how to suffer intelligently; about how to experience the limitations & pain of being in a body, with an eye to providing useful lessons for our immortal souls; about how to engage with our discomfort in such a way that it liberates us from illusion & brings us into harmony with our soul’s code.

Rudolf Steiner’s Lectures on this day

ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

1868 – Birthday of Harry Collison, the 1st General Secretary of the British Anthroposophical Society. In his early days Collison was a Freemason & Theosophist, he founded a group called the ‘Myrdhin’ Group, which was then renamed the ‘Zarathustra’ Group, at the suggestion of Rudolf Steiner.

Collison translated many of Steiner’s works into English, & was involved with the arrangements for many summer conferences held at Oxford, feathering ‘eurhythmy’ in the hall of Keble College.I n 1914 Collison arranged for several performers from Dornach to visit the UK & demonstrate the art to the study groups. The performers were Lori Maier-Smits, her younger sister Ada, Elisabeth Dollfus & Flossy von Sonklar. His exposure to eurhythmy had begun the previous year, when he had participated in the premier of f Steiner’s mystery play, The Soul’s Awakening, put on in Munich. Collison was one of the gnomes.

Even with his heavy involvement with Anthroposophy from 1910, Collison did not give up his artistic interest; in fact he described his subsequent career as “fairly successful”

Due to its continued loud support for Wegman & Vreede, the Anthroposophical Society in Great Britain was expelled from the General Anthroposophical Society in 1935. The British Society finally rejoined the General Anthroposophical Society in 1963.

He was variously described by those who knew him as charming, humorous, whimsical & genial, a delightful companion with whom to take a walk in the country or a tour of an art gallery, a provider of wise advice & counsel. He could also be excitable in conversation, authoritarian in his approach to dealing with issues & curt in manner if he lost patience. As Marie Steiner von Sivers, wrote, he enjoyed a rich life.

1943 – Death day of Dr. Ita Wegman co-founder of Anthroposophical Medicine with Rudolf Steiner. In 1921, she founded the first anthroposophical medical clinic in Arlesheim, Switzerland.

Ita Wegman, was born in Karawang, West Java, the first child of a Dutch colonial family. Around the turn of the century, she went to Europe & studied therapeutic gymnastics & massage. In 1902, when she was 26, she met Rudolf Steiner, who encouraged her to become a medical doctor. She began at the University of Zurich, where women were allowed to study medicine.

She developed a special form of massage therapy, called rhythmical massage, & other therapeutic treatments. In 1917, having opened an independent practice, she developed a cancer treatment using an extract of mistletoe following indications from Steiner. This first remedy, which she called Iscar, was later developed into Iscador & has become an important cancer treatment

By 1919 she had a joint practice together with two other doctors, also women. In 1920 she purchased land in Arlesheim, where she opened her own clinic, the Klinisch-Therapeutisches Institut, or Clinical-Therapeutic Institute, the next year. A number of other doctors joined the institute, which grew steadily over the next years as a first center for anthroposophical medicine. In 1922 she founded a therapeutic home for mentally handicapped children, Haus Sonnenhof, also in Arlesheim, & co-founded a pharmaceutical laboratory, Weleda, that has since grown into a significant producer of medicines & health-care products.

Ita Wegman Aleksandar | WortMihael / Rudolf Steiner / Antropozofija

In the following year, Rudolf Steiner asked Wegman to join the Executive Council of the newly reformed Anthroposophical Society at the Goetheanum in Dornach, Switzerland. Steiner also named her as the head of the First Class of the School of Spiritual Science. She also directed the Medical Section of the research center at the Goetheanum.

Together, Wegman & Steiner wrote what was to be Steiner’s last book, Extending Practical Medicine (earlier editions were published as Fundamentals of Therapy), which gave a theoretical basis to the new medicine they were developing. The book was partly written while Wegman cared for Steiner, who was already terminally ill. Wegman founded a new medical journal, Natura, the following year.

In 1936, the clinic opened a second home in Ascona, Switzerland. Shortly thereafter, difficulties between Wegman & the rest of the Executive Council flared up,& Wegman was asked to leave the Council; in addition, she& a number of supporters had their membership in the Anthroposophical Society itself withdrawn.

Her medical work & personal inner development flourished, however, & Wegman travelled extensively in support of the rapidly growing movement to extend medicine’s limits; she was especially active in the Netherlands & England during this time.

Dr. Ita Wegman died in Arlesheim in 1943, at the age of 67.

Memory Pictures of Ita Wegman on her Death Day by Norbet Glas, the founder of the Lucas Clinic next to the Wegman Clinic in Arlesheim: ‘The request to write about Dr. Wegman has moved me deeply and given me such cause for thought. I have come to the conclusion that there must be very few people whose personality is so difficult to describe as hers. For example, to write a personal account of Dr. Wegman, one must have the gift to create a real and vivid life picture in any description of her. For such she always was : full of a natural, unquenchable source of life – a complete human being, with all the truly human qualities. And such people are admired by many, loved by many, but also misunderstood and even hated by many. Who, then, is right?Like an answer to this question a memory-picture arises of Dr. Wegman in a room with Rudolf Steiner. Her figure was erect; she was wearing a brightly colored dress. With shining eyes she watched a little group of doctor-friends who had gathered together there. I observe Rudolf Steiner keenly. Never had I seen him like this. He looked at her with an infinitely loving expression. He seemed to me like a father who, with admiration and respect was watching his grown up daughter, and at the same time was very proud of her. With this picture in mind, one knows for certain, that as long as confidence in Rudolf Steiner remains, one must think of Dr. Wegman too, with admiration and thankfulness.

Dr Ita Wegman | Weleda

Simpler pictures ruse up in my memory: the breakfast table in the early days of the Arlesheim Clinic. There of us often sat there together. She was generally first, and waited for us. She did not like one to come late, though I hardly ever heard a direct remark about it. She often read the morning newspaper with the greatest interests, and I know that this rather surprised me. It had been my opinion that Anthroposophists concerned themselves very little with newspapers! But it was characteristic of her, that she had the greatest interest in everything that was happening in the world. It seemed to her just as important to read the Basler Nachrichten as to hear the reports about the patients from us or from the nurses. At times, indeed, something like indignation came over me that she seemed to be more interested in an article in the newspaper than in the report of the night nurse. She did not pay attention to the report, but read and read, and only when she had finished, asked the nurse to repeat it.

Her absolute unwearied activity in those days could only be marveled at. She organized the new Clinic, and saw the patients who were living in; she visited those outside; she held regular consultations in Basle at that time, in the afternoons. She concerned herself with the production of medicines and evolved plans for making them widely known. Her head was full of ideas for the Curative Education Institutes just being established. She sought for connections with many people, and developed these. And with the ingenuousness of someone who is herself unassuming, and asks for nothing for herself personally, she often convinced people how they could put their money to the right use, as she indeed hoped it was. No one can be surprised that many such undertakings went wrong. But she never grew weary of beginning again to discover fresh ways.

Rudolf Steiner's Mission and Ita Wegman (Paperback) - Walmart.com - Walmart.com

In the evenings she often wen to Rudolf Steiner, told him of her experiences, asked his advice and listened to what he wished of her. She was late in coming back and we waited for her. Often she told us then what she wished and what Rudolf Steiner had advised. Her great sense of humour was one of her delightful qualities and hardly anyone in the Clinic could laugh as heartily as she. And as a keen observer, she found very many opportunities for laughter. I can still almost hear her hearty laughter when she once heard me trying awkwardly to say something in Swiss-German dialect to a patient from the village. If she had a plan in her mind, she tried every way to bring her thoughts to realization. She wanted to try it with everybody, expecting from each the capabilities that were necessary. She was eager to carry it through, and she had confidence in people. If they did not go with her, she soon let the matter drop, without being annoyed with them for long. The proposal was suddenly made to me once (I was then quite young) to become the director of a business. I felt neither the inclination nor had I the slightest ability to fill such a post. (At that time I had only contempt for everything in the business world.) she described to me in glowing colors how well I could do it. I did not wish to undertake it and she realized this at once. I spent a sleepless night. What should I do? The next morning I saw Dr. Wegman again. She was friendly and interested, as always – but nothing more was said about the ‘directorship’ – never a word more.

And here let another quality of hers be called to mind which I have hardly ever seen so wonderfully developed in anyone else: if people did not do what she asked, or behaved unfairly towards her, she never held it against them for long. She could be overpoweringly angry, so angry that one could only be astonished at it, but in a short time it was all over, and she was always ready to hold out the hand of reconciliation. She was so untiringly active that she never gave herself time really to feel seriously hurt. She was filled with a glowing will-power which communicated itself to others. Her one great wish was that the scientific world should recognize the significance of Anthroposophy. She thought that by far the best way would be to let the scientists make direct contact with Rudolf Steiner. In the last years of Rudolf Steiner’s life he came to Vienna. In the morning, Dr. Wegman talked over with us the possibility of arranging a meeting with the greatest scientists of Vienna. That was her plan. And we were so delighted, and so fired with her impulse that we let everything else stand aside, and did nothing but go in search of people who seemed to us important. We invited them, and tried to convince them that they would be missing a rare opportunity if they did not come to our meeting that evening. We succeeded, and Rudolf Steiner came together in the evening with the most eminent doctors and scientists of Vienna; he gave an address, followed by a discussion until late into the night which none of those present will ever have forgotten. She was so untiring in her efforts to carry Rudolf Steiner’s teaching far out into the world, because she felt the menacing approach of world catastrophes. Rudolf Steiner himself had given enough warning of it, and consciousness of the threatening evils would not let her rest.

Women as active as she often begin to display a certain hardness, and pride themselves on their virility. This was never so with Dr. Wegman; one was always aware of great womanhood. She never tried to imitate men, either, in her broad minded thinking. In fact, she lived entirely in certain plans for the future, as to how a great medical and pedagogical movement, on the basis of Rudolf Steiner’s ideas, might be brought to realization. In the realizing of these ideas, she would allow nothing to disturb her. And the many ‘clever’ men, who so often wanted to show her, by rigid logic, how impossible everything would be or what mistakes she had made – all these she really disliked, and was bored by them. People were offended by this trait in her, for they did not understand it. She would not allow her ardour to be quenched or her untiring zeal to make good use of the time as long as it was still possible to do something. If she had spoken her mind, however, to the person concerned, and he had been very vexed, she was truly sorry. But she would bear with no narrowness, and therefore could not endure certain qualities, such as egoism, vanity, and – most of all – stupidity. If she had been very angry and had spoken in a temperamental way, she would suddenly stop, begin to laugh, and say: ‘But really, it is so stupid!’ And usually it was very stupid. She simply hated that kind of logic by which the spirit is restricted.

She had in her something of a power with which she could make the impossible possible. This is needed in true medical work and she had this will to heal as no one else. This fire in her nature stimulated the doctors who were round her, and for that we shall be eternally thankful to her. She was ready to help at any moment. If she was not immediately ready with the advice she wanted to give, she went to Rudolf Steiner, asked him and at once brought the answer. In Vienna I often received word from her within twenty four hours from Basle as to what to do in this or that case. Like all magnanimous people, she was full of praise and appreciation for good work. I remember how she came once to one of the Homes which indeed had been founded at her suggestion, but had not yet been seen in full working order. In the morning – having arrived the night before – she looked all round, and said, with warm admiration: ‘I could not have believed that Rudolf Steiner would be so alive here!’ And she praised everything. We even felt that it was more than we deserved. But it was such a joy for her when something succeeded, that she found no limits to her praise. Those who accompanied her were not always too pleased about this! But if she noticed it – and she generally did notice – then she made a point of expressing her appreciation all the more!

The last time I was able to see her – shortly before the outbreak of war – she seemed to have greatly changed. One felt a great power of peace flowing from her. But it was no longer the earthly, warrior-nature which used formerly to show itself: now it was deep pain and wisdom. She wanted to help everyone for whom there was something she could do. More people from Germany and Austria asked help from her than she could undertake. How moved she was when one day I brought to her a doctor from Vienna who had fled and waded through a stream in the night, so as to be able to cross the border at an unguarded spot! He possessed nothing but his soaked clothes, and he was quite destitute. She had never seen the man before. All her warm heartedness broke through at such a moment and she did everything that was possible at that time. Long afterwards this doctor wrote with admiration of our ‘Colleague’ at Arlesheim.

If these few pictures from her life help to indicated something of the character of Dr. Wegman, the aim and intention of the writer is achieved. Their purpose has been to bring to remembrance those great human qualities which made her want to lead us towards lofty goals.’ ~Norbet Glas, Gloucester, England

POD (Poem Of the Day)

~ In the blood the pulse of iron
Coalescing star-stuff…
She buries us in the blue egg of the world
We are pressed into the soil & rise
We grow in Her
& the world changes…
