Today is the 3 day of our Festive Vigil for Deathday of Rudolf Steiner. This morning I awoke with the image of a gateway that was swirling with a lemniscate of light & sound. A coming & going between the Earth & the Spirirtual world, a pulsing portal connecting the womb & the tomb, with many souls interacting, exchanging enegry & infomation. I invite you to call up in your mind’s eye a beloved who has crossed the Threshold; or perhaps you want to connect with someone here on earth that could use an influx of spiritual energy.

Now picture something specific about them, something active, the way they walk, a turn of phrase they use, their hands when they speak, their laughter. Create a living imagination of their individuality.

Now picture a time when they did something courageous, or beautiful, something virtuous or kind.

While recalling this, send out to them a circle of white light from within your heart to illuminate & generate life force, compassion, unconditional love.

See all the details, but, then choose a single word or phrase to encapsulate this experience. Write it in your journal, or maybe you will feel called to reach out to this person to share what came to mind, or perhaps you will draw a picture, or make a color or physical gesture that speaks the feeling of your experience.

Let it radiate out to form a corona of positive, healing energy that expands out from you to the person, whether they are here, or across the threshold.

Let the crown of light expand to encompass the whole earth, the whole universe, every rock, & flower, every crawling, leaping animal, every human being, every spiritual being, especially the adversarial beings who need it the most.

Fill yourself with this healing, protective light, let it surround you, & bathe you, & bless you.

31 March 2020 – “Speaking with the Stars”: Castor & Pollux shine together nearly overhead in the south after dark. Pollux is slightly the brighter of these “twins.” Draw a line from Castor thru Pollux, follow it farther out & you’re at the dim head of Hydra, the Sea Serpent. Continue the line farther & you hit Alphard, Hydra’s orange heart. The waning gibbous Moon shines in the hours before dawn Thursday morning, in the head of Scorpius now making its late-night appearance. Below or lower left of Bella Luna you’ll find orange Antares.

Rudolf Steiner’s Lectures on this day

Christian Morgenstern | People, Literary work, Christian

1914 – Deathday of Christian Morgenstern, Rudolf Steiner called him ‘a true representative of Anthroposophy’ – a German author & poet from Munich. He worked for a while as a journalist in Berlin, but spent much of his life traveling through Germany, Switzerland, & Italy, primarily in a vain attempt to recover his health. He had tuberculosis, which he had contracted from his mother. His travels, though they failed to restore him to health, allowed him to meet many of the foremost literary & philosophical figures of his time in central Europe. Morgenstern’s poetry, much of which was inspired by English literary nonsense, is immensely popular, even though he enjoyed very little success during his lifetime. He made fun of literary criticism in “Drei Hasen”, grammar in “Der Werwolf”, narrow-mindedness in “Der Gaul”, & symbolism in “Der Wasseresel”. In “Scholastikerprobleme” he discussed how many angels could sit on a needle. Many Germans know some of his poems & quotations by heart.

Morgenstern’s best known works are the Galgenlieder (Gallows Songs, 1905). Christian Morgenstern was also an acclaimed translator, rendering into German various prominent works from Norwegian and French, including the dramas and poems of Henrik Ibsen, Knut Hamsun, Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson & August Strindberg.

1927 – Deathday of Mabel Collins a British theosophist & author of popular occult novels, & the theses ‘Light on the Path’ (1885). She was also a fashion writer & an anti-vivisection campaigner.

On the morning of Holy Tuesday Christ Jesus enters the city of Jerusalem with His disciples once more. The waves of applause & joyful enthusiasm have long since died away. Jesus is immersed in the tension of the impending completion of his ultimate mission, but He is still obedient to the Jewish Law fulfilling the sacred customs for the preparation of Passover. A hoovering mood predicts that He is the sacrifice to be offered. From day to day the powerful sense of His spiritual presence in the city has increased. The people’s confused antipathy is already surging up to Him as flames that will consume the sacrifice. Now the day of Mars has come & the conflict flares up in earnest.

The crowd is mute; but their leaders full of anxiety speak volumes; their fears produce the hatred that fuels their attack, which they have been stoking for some time. Every hostile group in the powerful elite sends out assailants. One after the other they accost Him with their questions meant to trap & condemn him. What would otherwise be a blow in the face or a dragger-thrust takes the guise of questioning.

First of all the members of the Jewish Sanhedrin approach- the High Priests, Scribes & Elders; asking Jesus what authority He has for His actions. They push Him to legalize Himself with the letter of the law, not understanding the spirit behind it all. Then come the Pharisees who put the insidious question: “Is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar?” Others try to pin Him down by asking His opinion concerning the resurrection of the dead. Finally, a single question, intending to expose Him before all the people, asks which commandment He considers the most important of all.

These attacks, marking the outbreak of hostilities, are the proof of how strongly the Being of Christ was making itself felt – Stirring to the surface the darkness with his light. Just as dogs bark & bite only when they are afraid, so these alleged questions, which are arrows of hate, are the outcome of fear.

Jesus answers each of the four questions. (Interesting to see the parallel to the 4 questions asked at the Seder table today) But Christ Jesus doesn’t want to just dodge the blows aimed at Him; He accepts battle & fights back with weapons of the spirit. During the three previous years He has spoken to the people in poetic parables, & to the disciples in pictures of deep mystery. To His opponents He now speaks moral tales of conflict. He tells the Parable of the growers of the vineyard entrusted to them by the landowner; & how they refuse to surrender the harvest, instead they slay the owner’s messengers, & even his son. The elite opponents realize that they themselves are being called out. In fact, Jesus is spelling it all out that His enemies will indeed slay Him. His parable is a last endeavor to reach the souls of His enemies, to awaken them from their unconscious fear which causes them to have such hatred for what they do not know. A hope that they could be shocked into self-knowledge.

The pictures of the Tuesday of Holy Week, are relevant to every battle of light verses darkness. Goethe’s statement that world history is nothing but a continuous fight of fear against hope, touches the truth of this day. All opposition to the true Being of Christ, which is a hostility to the Spirit, has its root in deeply hidden weakness & fear. To approach the mystery of Love takes courage & strength. The battle is not only fought in the outer world. It must be met within ourselves. In each human soul, fear & courage, are mingled. ~from Luke 21: 5-38 & indications from Emil Bock

So interesting that this year Rudolf Steiner’s Deathday occurs on Holy Tuesday.

This is the seed time…when the chains of death are broken & life bursts forth from the earth. Each day another minute of light triumphs over the darkness. The elementals arise, & wait for us to work with them in good will. The Sun stretches out its hand to the child within us all, bidding us to return from the land of the dead, to be cloaked in the fresh rain. Enlivened with the sweet scent of aspiration on our breath, we can joyfully step forth. As the wild flowers send their pastel shoots up from the brown compost, our souls dance in delight. Despair turns to hope, sorrow to joy, want to abundance…

If we do not spring forward, we will surly slip back. Within our own minds many detailed explanations may exist – excuses? -that keep us from moving forward. To put them in perspective we can see them in relation to the 4 basic elements…

1st choose the area of your life you want to focus on, such as relationship, health, career, clarity around direction, spiritual growth…etc…

Then begin in the East: Air – What thoughts bind you? Are you too scattered in your thinking, can’t make up your mind? Too dogmatic? Suffer from monkey mind? Inner critic on overdrive? What do you need so that you can create a positive thought pattern? What does a free mind look like?

South: Fire – What binds your will? Are you too impulsive? Too willful, or perhaps your will is unfocused? Not able to take action? Feel fearful-unsafe? What do you need to empower your will force so you are free to take action?

West: Water – What emotions bind you? Are you too sensitive? Do you hold on to old feelings? Or are you rigid, not able to be empathic? Can’t go with the flow? How can you reclaim your creative fertility & be compassionate to yourself?

North: Earth – Does necessity bind you? Are you stuck in the mud? A perfectionist? Is nothing ever good enough? Perhaps you find it hard to complete things? What would it look like to be grounded, productive, prosperous & steadfast in your determination to create & manifest?

Perhaps this Spring season will call you to re-dedicate yourself to the 6 Basic / fundamental/ Essential Exercises…

From Rudolf Steiner: A meditant should do these six exercises:

1. Control of Thought: Think about a simple object for at least five minutes. Hold it fast in thoughts without going over to other things. This exercise arouses a feeling of firmness in the pupil as it activates the chakra between the eyebrows. One should send this feeling through the brain & down the backbone.

2. Control of will (acting on your own initiative): Do an unimportant thing every day at a certain time. This exercise also gives firmness.

3. Develop equanimity, that is, one shouldn’t fluctuate between rejoicing to heaven & despairing to death. A joke can be enjoyed just as much if we don’t laugh uncontrollably. We can bear a pain better if we don’t wallow in it too much. This gives us a feeling of quiet calm that we can let stream from the heart to the arms, & out through the hands.

4. Positivity: See the beautiful & true elements in all things. Christ Jesus admired the beautiful teeth in a rotting dog, where his disciples only saw ugliness. We can discover at least a small kernel of truth & something beautiful in everything. If we do this exercise for some time it gives us a feeling of great joy.

5. Open mindedness: Always be open to new things. We should never say: I never heard of that, that can’t be, or I don’t believe that. We should always leave the possibility open that we can learn something from everything that people say. We can learn from children, animals & everything else. This gives us the feeling that we could also perceive things while we are outside the body.

6. Inner Harmony: This exercise is a combination of the preceding ones, so that we can combine two & two or any way one wants. By doing this, we get the feeling that we have grown beyond the limits of our skin.

By practicing these basic exercises we develop our soul forces of Thinking, Feeling & Willing, creating new spiritual organs of perception. May we all take up the work of transformation which will lead us into the Resurrection.

1856 – Birthday of Fritz Lemmermayer, an Austrian writer, journalist & closest childhood friend of Rudolf Steiner in Vienna. Fritz was a passionate anti-materialist, he wanted to devote his life to the creation & maintenance of spiritual values. In 1883 he completed his novel “The Alchemist”. Rudolf Steiner met Lemmermayer again in 1886 in the circle of the poet Marie Eugenie delle Grazie. An extensive correspondence attests to the close friendship between the two (see GA 38).

Steiner says: Fritz Lemmermayer, with whom I was later on terms of intimate friendship, I came to know at one of delle Grazie’s afternoons. A highly noteworthy man. Whatever interested him he expressed with inwardly measured dignity. In his outward appearance he resembled equally the musician Rubinstein and the actor Lewinsky. With Hebbel he developed almost a cult. He had definite views on art and life born out of the sagacious understanding of the heart, and these were unusually fixed. He had written the interesting and profound romance, Der Alchemist(3), and much besides that was characterized by beauty and depth. He knew how to consider the least things in life from the view-point of the most vital. I recall how I once saw him in his charming little room in a side-street in Vienna together with other friends. He had planned his meal: two soft-boiled eggs, to be cooked in an instantaneous boiler, together with bread. He remarked with much emphasis while the water was heating to boil the eggs for us: “This will be delicious!” In a later phase of my life I shall again have occasion to speak of him ~Rudolf Steiner, The Story of My Life, Chapter VII Lemmermayer & Steiner joined the ranks of the Viennese artist circle in the house of the protestant priest Alfred Formey. In 1891 Lemmermayer was vice president of Schrifstellerbundes Iduna , named after Iduna , the Norse goddess of youth & immortality a counterweight against the currents of naturalism. Lemmermayer became a member of the Anthroposophical Society in 1920. He Steiner on many trips through Austria, Germany, Switzerland, France, Holland & England. This led to his 1929 published memories, where he spoke about Rudolf Steiner, Robert Hamerling & other personalities of the Austrian intellectual life of the 80s. In addition, Lemmermayer published in the weekly ” Das Goetheanum “.

Invitation to join in a 3 day Festive Vigil for Rudolf Steiner In honor of the anniversary of his Birth into the Spiritual World

As a reflection back to the 3 day group exercise we created for Rudolf Steiner’s birthday during February 25-27, 2021, you are invited to co-create a vigil in honor of the anniversary of his death in the physical world. We are meditating with the Bridge verse (below) and the image of the Representative of Humanity sculpture. To picture inwardly the sculpture and consider how Rudolf Steiner has impacted one’s life might be a powerful way to celebrate together.

Everyone is invited to participate. Join us as you are willing and able, for any or all aspects of the vigil.

Beloved Friends – It is now just over a full year since I started writing about the ‘Corona Crisis’. In looking back it is interersting to see how drasticly the world has changed in one solar cycle. Now more than ever, I am standing with you, & all of humanity; called to face the ‘Guardian of the Threshold’.

Not all of us are conscious of this faithful encounter. But for me, it is feels like a reckoning, an uncomfortable inspection of the good, the bad & the ugly parts of my being; those places where I ‘miss the mark’; the bad habits & false pride. I think of how Rudolf Steiner said that if there had been ‘4 times 12 true anthroposophist’s’, WW1 & therefore all the subsequent wars, could have been avoided. And when I ask myself if could be counted in that number, I find myself sorely lacking, & it pains me.

1417 – 1487 Birth & Death & Feast Day of St Nicholas of Flüe a Swiss hermit & ascetic who is the patron saint of Switzerland. He is sometimes invoked as Brother Klaus. A farmer, councilor, judge & mystic, he was respected as a man of complete moral integrity. Rudolf Steiner calls him ‘a hero in the spirit’ & tells us ‘he foresaw his baptism in the womb.’

1893 – Birthday of Eugen Kolisko, remembered for his pioneer work in anthroposophy, was an Austrian-German physician & educator. He studied medicine at the University of Vienna, & became a lecturer of medical chemistry. Eugen Kolisko was introduced to anthroposophy through his classmate, Walter Johannes Stein. In 1914, he first attended lectures given by Rudolf Steiner. Consequently, he became a member of the Anthroposophical Society, & in 1920 was invited as an instructor to the newly established Waldorf School at Stuttgart by Emil Molt. Kolisko specialized in preventative medicine, & at the Waldorf School he worked with other teachers in creating a curriculum that focused on the spiritual & physical development of school children. He was instrumental in construction of several artistic therapies, such as anthroposophic music therapy & eurythmy. During the 1930s, he left the Waldorf School in Stuttgart because of the Nazis, relocating to England in 1936, where he undertook the establishment of a private educational institute. Eugen Kolisko was the author of numerous written works

1918 – With the Spanish Flu just starting to make its appearance during World War I: The first phase of the German Spring Offensive, Operation Michael, begins.

1895 – Deathday of William Q. Judge, born in Dublin. He was brought up a Methodist, but early showed strong occult tendencies. The family migrated to New York, in 1864. Judge became an American citizen at 21. He worked as a clerk at an early age as he had to be self-supporting. Hhe married in 1874, & had one daughter who died of diphtheria. At the time of the formation of The Theosophical Society he was a law clerk in the office of the U.S. Attorney for the S. District of New York. He was later admitted to the Bar, & made a specialty of Commercial Law. He was modest, unassuming, eager for occult instruction & ready to work. At first H.P. Blavatsky objected to Judge becoming a Councillor, but he won her friendly regard & kept it. He developed leadership, & became one of the most important figures in The Theosophical Society. William Quan Judge served as editor of the periodical, The Path, from 1886-1896. “To try on the one hand to point out to their fellows a Path in which they have found hope for man, and on the other to investigate all systems of ethics and philosophy claiming to lead directly to such a path, regardless of the possibility that the highway may, after all, be in another direction from the one in which they are looking.” Then difficulties arose, & he led the secession of the majority of American Lodges, in 1895.

1925 – The Butler Act prohibits the teaching of human evolution in Tennessee.

1928 – Charles Lindbergh is presented with the Medal of Honor for the first solo trans-Atlantic flight.

1960 – Apartheid: Sharpeville massacre, South Africa: Police open fire on a group of black South African demonstrators, killing 69 &wounding 180.

10:10 Testament: Deborah Rogers shared her imgination of pulling the earth in like a ‘string’ that halves the earth like the 2 sections of the brain, pulling it down to the center of the earth where the molten golden core, where the Christ resides – pulling the string until it turns the earth inside out – the core that was inside becomes the New Sun of Shamballa shining out to create new worlds.

These kinds of imgainations speak to our soul when we pay attention. They are the building blocks for change. In the Gospel of Thomas we hear: “When you make the two one, and when you make the inside like the outside and the outside like the inside, and the above like the below, and when make the male and the female one and the same – then you will enter the kingdom.” This lives in me as the image of the lemniscate – the figure 8 – symbol of infinity.

Christ, in teaching his disciples about the nature of polarities, spoke about the synthesizing nature of opposites. It is thru the silence that we can find music. It is in the form where we realize the formless. With the in-breath we dance into the out-breath. Thru rest we can delight in action. Pythagoras said, “God geometrizes”. Rudolf Steiner said, “God eurythmeizes”

Freinds – What are the Next steps? – How can we keep the momentum going in the creation of this powerful egregore of the Earth as a sacred Planet & every Human Being a Star…?

“We are in a time of extremely serious trials.
We must be evermore conscious of this.

Now everything good and everything evil
Is coming to the light of day,
often in a most devastating way.

Whoever is able to meditate
can powerfully affect
what is happening.

Only very few have the possibility of understanding
what is going on, let alone the strength to fulfill
the task given to us.

It is all the more important that the few
who do have a true understanding
now apply all their strength –

From Rudolf Steiner: “…nature which causes us to rejoice has within it at the same time the mighty healer for all the damage man can cause himself. Somewhere in nature the remedy is concealed. It is a question, not only of understanding the language of the healer, but also of obeying it and really carrying it out. Today it is in most cases impossible for us to hear the voice of healing nature because of our misunderstanding of light, and the darkness which has penetrated into knowledge has in many respects brought about conditions preventing us from hearing.

Here again we see a remarkable connection which allows us to perceive the whole great world, inclusive of humankind, as One Being. In the sayings: ‘Matter is woven light,’ and ‘the soul is in some way or other diluted love,’ are to be found the keys of innumerable secrets of earth existence. Thus we have shown nothing less than that we, if in any way we alter the direction of karma, unite ourselves in one or the other case with the elements composing our earth existence: on the one side with light which has become matter — and on the other side with love which has become soul. We either draw the remedies out of our surroundings, out of the condensed light, or out of our own soul by the healing loving act, the sacrificial act, and we then heal with the soul-forces obtained from love. We unite ourselves with what is most deeply justified upon the earth, when, on the one hand, we unite ourselves with light and on the other with love. All earth conditions are in some way conditions of balance between light and love and everything unhealthy is a disturbance of that balance. If the disturbance is in love, we can then help by unfolding the forces of love; and if the disturbance is in light, we can then help by somehow providing for ourselves, out of the universe, that light which is able to dissolve the darkness within us.

These are the fundamental ways of help, and we see again how everything depends upon the balance of opposites. Light and love are polar opposites and on their being interwoven depend ultimately all the psychic and material processes of our life.

In this connection I should like to note that just in such times as our own, a characteristic in many people is that they completely forget, and pay no attention to, that which one may call ‘the consciousness of a super-sensible world.’ They pay no attention whatever to the fact that there is a spiritual world, and they therefore turn away their thoughts from it. In such an age — or in all such ages — there is always in certain respects a counterpart to be found. I should like to show you this in a very simple manner.

When there are people upon the physical plane who are so absorbed in the physical that they completely forget the spiritual, then a contrary tendency appears among those souls who are living in the spiritual world between death and a new birth — a tendency which works over from the physical into the spiritual plane — impelling them to occupy themselves with the influences which act out of the spiritual world into the physical. It is this which brings about in the physical world the intervention by souls who are still in that state before birth. These souls work down into the physical world according to the means which offer and they are able to work indirectly through persons who are more sensitive to such influence from the spiritual world.

The dead are anxious show in a palpable manner that there is indeed a spiritual world.

This is intended to illustrate how in the world and in world affairs we see continual disturbances of the balance, and then again the efforts for the restoring of the balance.

This continual disturbance and restoration of the balance between the two elements of light and love is fundamental for us; and in human karma, from incarnation to incarnation, both work to restore the disturbed condition. Karma, working its serpentine way through incarnations is just such a disturbed balance, until man, after all his incarnations, shall at last create the final balance which can be reached upon earth. Having fulfilled his mission on earth, he evolves then into a new planetary form.

I have not shrunk from touching to-day upon those mysteries for which our modern science will not for a long time be ripe: Matter is in reality woven light, and that which belongs to the soul is in some way or other refined love.
