The call of conscience

Carlo Crivelli

(top art by Søren Dalsgaard)

He Must Increase but I Must Decrease.” (John 3:30)

John the Baptist – born in the light of the Summer Sun, just after the Solstice, six months before Jesus, whose birth is celebrated just after the Winter Solstice.

Along with references to the light of the Sun, there are many lamp & fire symbols in the Old Testament that prepare the way for the Christ, in which this being appeared in ‘flames of fire’ & ‘clouds of glory’, such as the burning bush (Exodus 3), & the refiner’s fire (Malachi 3:2)

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path”(Psalm 119:105)

Solomon compares prayer with a lamp, & teaching with light, (Proverbs 6:23) “like the shining of the sun, burns evermore, and leads to eternal rest.”

Rabbis were often called “Lamps of the Law,” & David was “The Lamp of Israel” (2 Samuel 21:17). Compare the remarkable parallel spoken of in the prototype of the Baptist:  “Then stood up Elias the prophet, as fire, and his word was kindled like a lamp” (Ecclesiasticus 48:1). This speaks to the promised light which was to appear, & Elias as the torchbearer who kindles the lamb to light the bridegroom’s way.

He was not the Light, but came to bear witness to the Light” (John 1:8). Here we see the distinction between the lamp (John the Baptist) & the Light (The Christ)

2 Peter 1:19 tells us: “We also have the message of the prophets, which has been confirmed beyond doubt. And you will do well to pay attention to this message, as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.”

John the Baptist, as the Forerunner of the Christ, is the flame signal of the Messiah, the last Old Testament form of the pillar of fire, or the candlestick in the temple. “He was the burning and shining lamp (λύχνος, not φῶς) and there was nothing you wanted more than to bask for a while in that light”. (John 5:35) Here we experience the Baptist as Christōsphoros, the harbinger of the Christ-Light (Φωσφόρος) – the “Light-Bearer”.

“John replies in the words of Isaiah the prophet, “I am the voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way for the Lord.” (John 1:23)

The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light.” (Matthew 6:22). We also find that, under the symbol of lamps of fire, the messengers of God, are repeatedly set forth (Matthew 5:14-16; Matthew 25:1-8; Revelation 1:20; Philippians 2:15).

Like the call of conscience from John the Baptist, the need arises to let the light of the higher ego shine into our being.

Let us seek to know the will forces that through our deeds become part of the earth’s being, & make straight the path to the New Jerusalem.

(See also these references: John 1:5, John 1:7, John 1:8, John 1:9; & compare John 3:19-21, John 8:12; John 9:5; John 12:46)

Until soon

A blue chart, showing the boundaries of the constellation Gemini, as the sun enters Gemini.
EarthSky.org

22 June 2021 – “Speaking with the Stars:” – The June solstice arrived on June 21 at 10:32 CDT. At that moment, the Sun was in front of the constellation Taurus the Bull. About 1/2 day later – the Sun crossed the constellation bounary, moving out of Taurus into the constellation Gemini the Twins. So the solstice sun shines very close to the Taurus-Gemini border.

Three curved, dotted sun tracks across the sky from various heights above the horizon down to the horizon. Northernmost sunset is on June solstice.

Because of a motion of Earth called precession, the Sun is always moving West along the zodiac. There are 12 constellations of the zodiac. And the cycle lasts 26,000 years. So you might see that the sun will continue to shine in front of Taurus at the June solstice for many, many years. It won’t cross a constellation boundary again until the year 4609. That’s when the June solstice sun will finally move into the constellation Aries the Ram, the constellation to the immediate west of Taurus (which was where the Sun was at the Spring Equniox when Christ was on Earth) ~EarthSky.org

Feast of St. Thomas More, “a man for all seasons,” From Rudolf Steiner: Things in Past and Present in the Spirit of Man, Lecture VIII – THOMAS MORE’S “UTOPIA” …”Thomas More was really fortune’s favourite. He advanced from various state offices, became a member of Parliment, and finally High Chancellor for Henry VIII who had him executed because he would not agree to the Succession Act. This was a sin against the new institution of the English Church. Then the enlightened Lord Justices had to decide what sort of judgement should be meted out to Thomas More. The following is the decision which these enlightened justices reached as the price Thomas More had to pay for his so-called treason of not going along with Henry VIII. He was to be condemned and brought to the Tower by Sheriff William Pinkston and then put in a braided basket and dragged through the City of London to Tiburn. In Tiburn he was to be hanged only until he was half dead, then he was to be taken down form the scaffold and certain of his limbs would be cut off; his body torn open and the entrails burned. Then his body with the exception of the head would be divided into four portions and each would be placed on a pike and set at the four ends of the City of London. His head, however would be put on a high spear and placed on London Bridge in order to serve as a warning for people to go along with the King. This was the sort of judgement that these enlightened lords issued. This was not carried out, however, he was beheaded and the head was placed upon a spear on London Bridge.”

Sally & I will be bringing some leading thoughts this week linking Thinking from the 6 Essential Exercises with Memory from the Weekday exercises, so that in your practice & research time you might choose to bring the 8-fold path to the 6BE’

Friday’s on the 8-fold path brings us to Right Memory: And it just so happened that the study the General Council was working on during our recent retreat, had the perfect quote for today:  Thank you Dr. Steiner, for always bringing those synchronicities. This quote is from ‘Anthroposophy, An Introduction’, given a year before he died. These 9 lectures are a kind of recapitulation, a deepening of concepts he gave 21 years earlier in his seminal books ‘Theosophy’, & ‘How to Know Higher Worlds’.

Thinking, feeling and willing live in our soul, but over and above these we have something very special, namely: memory./ We do not only think about what is at present around us; our inner life contains fragments of what we have experienced, and these re-arise as thoughts. People think that we form a thought from our experience, & that this thought descends somewhere, to rest as it were in some chest or box, and to re-appear when remembered. Either it bobs up of its own accord, or has to be fetched. This sort of thing is the very model of confused thinking. While we are perceiving — experiencing — anything – something is continually going on beneath our thinking. Our perceptions enter our life body.

This goes on while we are thinking about the experience – an ‘impression’ is made. It is not thought that is preserved somewhere or other as in a casket – A thought is always in the present moment. The act of memory, comes from the impressions made on the formative forces of our etheric body.

Sally – Raising the Soul Practical Exercises for Personal Development by Warren Lee Cohen Pages 38-41 – “I thought a thought, But the thought I thought I thought was not the thought Ithought I thought I thought,If the thought I thought I thought, had been the thought I thought, I thought,I would not have been thinking so much.”  -Tongue twister pg 33

An ending thought from Steiner, that again brings thinking & memory together: “We must look at our memories with clear thinking if we want to get beyond the transient life. Our True Self lives behind them: the Self that is given us again from out of the spiritual world, that we may find our way, from time, to eternity.”

FRIDAY

Strive to learn as much as possible. Nothing passes us without giving us occasion to accumulate the experience which is of value for our lives.

If one has performed anything wrongly or imperfectly, this can be an incentive for repeating the performance later on rightly and perfectly.

One will not do anything without looking back on experience from which one can derive help in one’s decisions and affairs. One can learn a great deal from everybody, also from children. Remember in the right way, experiences one has had. This is called the ‘Right Memory’.

Exhale

Listen to the ‘I Think Speech’ Podcast

Greetings friends – I am continuing to polish the gems gleaned from Anthroposophy, A Summary of Twenty-one Years, Lecture 6 Respiration, warmth, & the ego, 3 Feb. 1924

We think we ‘know’ the ‘basics’ of the 4 fold-human being, but do we really practice true ‘imagination’, ‘inspiration’, & ‘intuition’ ..? Picture building has always been natural for me, but it’s in the letting go of these imaginations that allows ‘inspiration’ to waft in – to become the content that fills our emptied consciousness. At this stage we can induce a conscious condition in which the spiritual world flows into us. We can feel, an element of spiritual music, the progressive beings of the cosmos speaking ‘into’ us.

Larry Young

Steiner describes what we are doing when we sleep – that our soul & spirit, outside our body, actually takes in the carbonic acid of our exhalations – receiving the impressions made by our exhaled air! This keeps our astral connected to our body thru the air we have exhaled which offers up the secrets of our inner life. Steiner describes this exhaled air as ‘sparkling forth’ from us. ‘Sparkling out into the universe, with a sun-like appearance‘, which our soul beholds & this can become conscious when we reach the stage of ‘inspiration’. With Inspired knowledge we can perceive how the astral body is in the physical during waking life, AND how it is outside during sleep – receiving impressions.

Pierce Devon

This idea of ‘recieving impressions’ made me think of what Steiner says about the Hibernian mysteries: “When the pupils had been prepared up to the grade required they were led before two colossal statues. One statue was a male form, the other female.

Through these statues the pupils experienced the approach of the Cosmic Word. These statues were to them, the external letters by means of which they must begin to decipher the Cosmic Secret placed before men.

One of the statues, the male statue, was of wholly elastic material, compressible in every part. The pupils were made to press the statue in every part. Through this action, it revealed itself to them as hollow. It was in fact only the skin of a statue made of elastic material, so that after being pressed it regained the same shape.

Over the head of this statue which was peculiarly characteristic, over the head there was something which represented the Sun.

The whole head was such that one saw it must really be as a Soul-Eye. The head as Soul-Eye represented microcosmically the content of the whole macrocosm. This manifestation of the whole macrocosm came to expression through the Sun in this colossal head.

This statue made the impression directly upon the pupil: Here the macrocosm works through the Sun and forms the human head, which knows the impulses of the macrocosm and forms itself inwardly and outwardly according to these impulses of the macrocosm.

The other statue was such that first of all the eyes of the pupil fell on something like bodies of light raying inwards with light. And in the midst the pupil then saw a female form, standing wholly under the influence of these rays. And the feeling came to him that the head was created out of these rays. There was something indefinite about the head.

This statue was of another substance, a plastic substance, not elastic but plastic and extraordinarily soft. The pupil was made to press it also. Every pressure he made remained. Only always between one time when the pupil was tested before this statue and the next time the indentations he had made were corrected. So that whenever the pupils were led to the same ceremony before this statue the statue was always intact again. In the case of the other statue, the elastic one, the whole form recovered itself of its own accord.

The impression received in the case of the second statue was that it stood wholly under the influence of the moon-forces which permeated the organism and caused the head to grow out of the organism. An extraordinarily powerful impression was made on the pupils by what they thus experienced. They were often brought before this statue; each time they were to make indentations in the statue, which were then corrected.

They were led up to the statue by those already initiated and were then left, the door of the temple behind being shut. They were left in their solitude.

Each pupil was taken by himself and made to test the statues, to experience for himself the Elasticity of the first, and in the second case the plasticity in which the indentations he had made remained. Then he was left alone by himself with the impression, which as I have already indicated was working powerfully, most powerfully upon him. There arose in the pupil the most vivid longing when he was brought before these two statues, that what appeared to him as a great riddle should in some way or other become solved in his soul, that he should get to understand the nature of this riddle — on the one hand that he should understand the nature of this riddle, and on the other hand the problem as to what lay in the forms and in the whole manner in which he was to relate himself to them. All this worked in a deep, strangely deep way upon the pupils. And they stood before the statues in their whole soul and in their whole spirit as, I might say, a colossal question-mark. Everything in them was a question, Reason asked, the heart asked, the will asked, everything, everything asked.

The man of today can still learn from these things, which were brought perceptibly before the mind in former ages; the modern student must go through the same scale of sensations, must struggle in himself through these sensations in inner meditative experience…”

Andy Singleton

With ‘inspired’ consciousness we perceive the circulatory process, just as we perceive Nature during waking life. And then we can contemplate the warmth-process that takes place with the I forces, & how that affects the airy element of the etheric body in motion. And we start to see the big picture of the grand spiritual processes at work – which conceals many secrets – but also reveals that the real driving power at work within the human being is not our present ego at all – It is the ego of our past lives on earth which are active in us! The warmth-processes help us perceive our real ego, working from times long past.

Geopoliticus Child Watching the Birth of the New Man - Wikipedia
Dali

Between death and a new birth this ego has undergone an evolution in time; it now works in an entirely spiritual way – We perceive all our metabolic processes, as the expression of powerful spiritual beings working in our true Ego.

So with ‘inspiration’ we come to know the astral body thru our ego’s gift of ‘intuition’, And this ‘intuition’ takes us back to our previous life on earth.

William Oxer

Sleep is really a return in time. Every sleep is a return to the regions traversed before birth, or to former incarnations. And so I was also wondering: Can we also get glimpses into our future lives?

And when we die (unless we are an initiate) the cosmos takes all our memories & experiences – the impressions rolled up in our etheric body -the cosmos takes them back, (enriched hopefully) thru our human soul forces – I always like to say: ‘May I be a fit food for the gods’. This gives us the perspective that we are not just here on earth for our own spiritual development, we are here for the advancement of the universe. The universe needs us, because thru us, it ‘fullfills’ itself — fills itself again & again with its own content that has been filtered thru our thinking, feeling & willing – an interchange, between the universe & the human being. Anthroposophia helps us to become true human beings if we make this experience conscious & practical.

Caves under the sea

My Life as a Lens / unsplash.com

Greetings friends – I am just bobbing my head up from a deep dive – my 1st foray as a member of the General Council of the Anthroposophical Society in America. Thruout the 4 day retreat we worked with a lecture series by Rudolf Steiner called simply – ‘Anthroposophy, An Introduction’, GA 234, given a year before he died, from January – February of 1924. These 9 lectures are a kind of recapitulation, a deepening of concepts he gave 21 years earlier in his seminal books ‘Theosophy’, & ‘How to Know Higher Worlds’.

Steiner asks us to face life’s riddles, as he takes us from ordinary knowing to the science of initiation. On this path of the soul to the spiritual we peel away yet another layer in the exploration of the various sheaths of the human being. Are we willing to transcend the chains of necessity binding us to the destructive forces inherent in the laws of nature? We can ask things like: “How does a moral impulse come to move bone by muscle?”

Ram Daleti

When we seek the moral element within us, we meet ourselves in a fresh way – thru imaginative thinking – the human being as small ocean, our fluid etheric self – taking us back to the womb –  & at birth, “time becomes space“, for the etheric body is a “time-organism”, just as the physical body is a “space-organism”.

To Balance the rounding down centripetal forces we live into inspired feeling. The inner music of our breath streaming in as living beings, & out again to be read by our higher self, allows us to look directly into the spiritual world, where “space must become time for us“.

Steiner describes the human being as a “comet stretching its tail far back into the past”. And so it is that inspiration can reveal our past incarnations when we empty our consciousness – “suggest away” all the pictures we have built up, leaving that strengthened space  open. Music (or a scent) can unlock experiences, perhaps memories from another life. “Our moral impulses act indirectly, through the ego of our last incarnation.”

I hope that little nugget of a synopsis wets your appetite to read this series for yourself. It is truly food for the soul.

Frederic Leighton

On the 2nd day of the retreat, (11 June 2021) we took a break in the afternoon. I went to do my midday Circle meditation & fell asleep. Tomorrow I will share what Steiner had to say in the above lectures about the sleeping human being, but for now here is the dream I had during my afternoon nod:

The Illustrated Jules Verne: Voyage au centre de la Terre | Literature art, Earth illustration, Jules verne

I am in a kind-of Jules Vern landscape – caves under the sea. I am part of a community that lives there. We are all dressed like the time of the French Revolution: with big powered-wigs & fancy clothes; everyone is wearing overstated makeup. A woman – one of the leaders has a presentment that an important ‘book’ was to appear. We travel into another chamber of the cave which is vast & airy, & there is a large group pf people that have Ethiopian / Egyptian features, very tall and thin with coal black skin. Their faces are all painted in bright yellow chalk, which gives them a striking countenance. They are bare chested, with leather skirts & black bands around their left arms. The woman wear large top hats & their breasts are painted bright yellow like their faces. They are all smoking pipes that emit pure clean oxygen which enlivens the chamber. They stare out as if in a deep meditative state. The air vibrates & moves like music. I stand there certain that they have ‘the book’. I am filled with a deep feeling of gratitude & anticipation.

It’s been a long weekend & I am still digesting. I feel like I have taken a turn somehow…

As my friend Mary Louise always says: Onward!

Ring of Fire

skyandtelescope.org

Listen: the ‘I Think Speech‘ Podcast

The dance goes on. Two weeks after May’s total lunar eclipse, the Sun, Moon and Earth align again on Thursday, June 10th. This time, the Moon glides between the Earth and the Sun to grace the morning sky with an annular eclipse. The eclipse is central but not total because the Moon is near apogee, its most distant point from Earth. Its apparent diameter will be shy of completely covering the Sun, leaving a “ring of fire”.

Try to watch the eclipse from the Great Inland Sea of Chicago where the blazing crescent and its glitter path should be nothing short of spectacular. Many of us will be tempted to look at the rising Sun at the horizon where haze often attenuates its light. Be careful. A momentary glance might be OK, but never stare at the Sun even for a second. Infrared light can cook your retinas and permanently damage your vision. Keep eclipse glasses at the ready.

Rudolf Steiner’s Lectures on this day(RSarchives)

ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY (Rudolf Steiner’s original Calendar of the Soul, Anthrowiki, Wikipedia Commons)

53 – The Roman emperor Nero marries Claudia Octavia.

68 – The Roman emperor Nero commits suicide, after quoting Homer’s Iliad. In 64 AD, most of Rome was destroyed in the Great Fire of Rome, which many Romans believed Nero himself had started in order to clear land for his planned palatial complex, the Domus Aurea. Nero’s rule is associated with tyranny & extravagance. He is known for many executions, including that of his mother. Nero was rumored to have had captured Christians dipped in oil & set on fire in his garden at night as a source of light. This view is based on the writings of Tacitus, Suetonius & Cassius Dio, the main surviving sources for Nero’s reign. Facing a false report of being denounced as a public enemy who was to be executed, he committed suicide, the first Roman emperor to do so.

“Think of all that history recounts of Nero. In face of such a personality it seems as if life could be mocked and scorned with impunity, as if the utterly flippant disregard for life displayed by one in a position of great power and authority, brought no consequences. Anyone hearing of Nero’s deeds must be dull-witted if he is not driven to ask: What becomes of a soul such as this, who scorns the whole world, who regards the life of other men, nay even the existence of a whole city, as something he can play with? “What an artist is lost in me!” is a saying attributed to Nero, and it seems to be in line with his whole attitude and tenor of mind. Utmost flippancy, an intense desire and urge for destruction, acknowledged even by himself — and the soul actually taking pleasure in it all!

One can only be repelled by the story, for here is a personality who literally radiates destruction. And the question forces itself upon us: What becomes of such a soul?

Now we must be quite clear on this point: Whatever is discharged, as it were, upon the world, is reflected in the life between death and a new birth, and discharged in turn upon the soul who has been responsible for the destruction. A few centuries later, that is to say, a comparatively short time afterwards, Nero appeared again in the world in an unimportant form of existence. During this incarnation a certain balance was brought about in respect of the mania for destruction, the enthusiasm for destruction in which he had indulged as a ruler, simply out of an inner urge. In that next life on earth something of this was balanced out, for the same individuality was now in a position where he was obliged to destroy; he was in a subordinate position, acting under orders. The soul had now to realise what it is like when such acts are not committed out of free will while in a position of supreme power.

Matters of this kind must be studied quite objectively and all emotion avoided — that is absolutely essential. In a certain respect, such a destiny calls for pity — for to be as cruel as Nero, to have a mania for destruction as great as his, is, after all, a destiny. There is no need for hatred or censure; moreover such an attitude would prevent one from experiencing all that is required in order to understand the further developments. Insight into the things that have been spoken of here is possible only when they are looked at objectively, when no hostile judgment is passed but when human destiny is really understood. Things disclose themselves quite clearly, provided one has the faculty for understanding them … That this Nero-destiny came vividly before me on one occasion was attributable to what seemed to be chance — but it was only seemingly chance.

One day, when a terrible event had occurred, an event of which I shall speak in a moment and which had a shattering effect throughout the region concerned, I happened to be visiting a person frequently mentioned in my autobiography: Karl Julius Schröer. When I arrived I found him profoundly shocked, as numbers were, by what had happened. And the word “Nero” fell from his lips — apparently without reason — as though it burst from dark depths of the spirit. To all appearances the word came entirely out of the blue. But later on it became quite clear that in reality the Akashic Record was here being voiced through human lips. The event referred to was the following. —

The Austrian Crown Prince had always been acclaimed as a brilliant personality, and great hopes were entertained for the time when he would ascend the Throne. Although all kinds of things were known about the behaviour of the Crown Prince Rudolf, they were accepted as almost inevitable in the case of one of such high rank; nobody dreamt for a moment that the things told about him might lead to any serious, tragic conflicts. It was therefore an overwhelming shock when it became known in Vienna that the Crown Prince Rudolf had met his death in mysterious circumstances near the Convent of the Holy Cross, outside Baden, near Vienna. Details gradually came to light and at first there was talk of a “fatal accident” — indeed this was officially announced. Then, after the official announcement, it became known that the Crown Prince had gone to his hunting lodge accompanied by the Baroness Vetsera and that there they had both met their death…” ~Rudolf Steiner, Karmic Relationships, Volume II: Lecture V https://wn.rsarchive.org/Lectures/GA236/English/RSP1974/19240427p01.html
