Cling Not

“Modern humanity is passing over a threshold at which stands a Guardian, a Guardian grave and full of meaning. And this grave Guardian speaks: “Cling not to what has come as a transplant from olden times; look into your hearts, into your souls, that you may be capable of creating new forms. You can only create these new forms when you have faith that the powers of knowledge and of will for this spiritual creation come out of the spiritual world.”

It is only through spiritual-scientific knowledge of the passing of the threshold in our present day that can give the Christ-form to this chaos.” ~Rudolf Steiner, THE SEARCH FOR THE NEW ISIS, DIVINE SOPHIA, GA 202, Lecture III  https://rsarchive.org/Lectures/19201225p01.html

I stare into the Clouds
Fore-gathering
Noetic sight
Into squinting syllables.
Watch it pour out honeyed unguents –
A sweet viscus half-light
Overflowing the ashen cup of night.
My I’s washed
With April showers
Splashing like a stepped in puddle
Falling fragrant on the flower.

Rudolf Steiner’s Lectures on this day

ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

582- Death & Feast Day of Eutychius of Constantinople, Toward the end of his life, Eutychius maintained an opinion that after the resurrection the body will be “more subtle than air” & no longer a tangible thing. This was considered heretical, because it was taken as a denial of the doctrine of physical, corporeal resurrection.

TODAY in 1483 – Good Friday – Birthday of Raphael – Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino

TODAY in 1520 – Good Friday – Deathday of Raphael – Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino

It must seem strange that Raphael was the same person as a thorny character like John the Baptist. How could it happen that this thorny man, who had to pave the way for the Mystery of Golgotha in such a violent way, reappeared as the gentle, pliable, charming Raphael? But look at this. Raphael’s father, Giovanni Santi, died when Raphael was eleven. He was a painter. He was not a great painter so far as external achievements go, but he had great ideas in his head, although he could not put them on canvas because he had no technical skill. He was also a poet. There was a great deal of fantasy in him, but the physical capacities simply were not there. He went early through the portal of death, and then his forces worked into his son. In Raphael’s hands and imagination worked all that his father could send into the physical world. One can say that the old Giovanni Santi was a painter without hands in the supersensible world, for in a wonderful karmic relationship he supplied, in combination with the Christ-filled individuality of the Baptist, what came to expression in Raphael. The supersensible world had to work with the physical world to achieve this result. It shows how the so-called dead are able to influence those who have been left behind…” ~ Rudolf Steiner, On the Relationship with the Dead, 23 April 1913

Raphael, as we know from was  an Italian painter & architect of the High Renaissance. Raphael was enormously productive, running an unusually large workshop &, despite his death at 37, leaving a large body of work. Many of his works are found in the Vatican Palace. From 1517 until his death, Raphael lived in the Palazzo Caprini in the Borgo, in rather grand style in a palace designed by Bramante. He never married, & was thought to be bi-sexual. He is said to have had many affairs, but a permanent fixture in his life in Rome was “La Fornarina”, Margherita Luti, the daughter of a baker (fornaro) named Francesco Luti from Siena.

The story goes that Raphael’s premature death on Good Friday, which was also his 37th birthday, was caused by a night of excessive sex with Luti, after which he fell into a fever &, not telling his doctors that this was its cause, was given the wrong cure, which killed him. At his request, Raphael was buried in the Pantheon.

His funeral was extremely grand, attended by large crowds. The inscription in his marble sarcophagus, an elegiac distich written by Pietro Bembo, reads: “Ille hic est Raffael, timuit quo sospite vinci, rerum magna parens et moriente mori”, meaning: “Here lies that famous Raphael by whom Nature feared to be conquered while he lived, and when he was dying, feared herself to die.”

Rudolf Steiner speaks about him in his various incarnations, in ‘The Last Address’ – The Individuality of Elias, John, Raphael, Novalis. Dornach, Michaelmas Eve, 1924, GA 238

15 thoughts on “Cling Not

  1. In relation to the raising of Lazarus, here is Steiner’s description of the seminal moment. The Baptist’s blood was still circulating from the etheric, and his soul and spirit were looking to return to earth in order to further contribute to the Christ Impulse. Why not be amongst the Twelve in order to help. This was his thought, and Christ knew that his cousin, Jesus, would be most happy. That is why he was called, “The Disciple Whom Jesus was Loving”. It fits like a glove.

“When a man’s development is so far advanced that he can receive an impulse from Christ which is strong enough to influence his circulation and express itself in a special circulatory movement of the blood — that is, when the Christ-impulse can extend its influence into the physical body, even for a short time, then man is in a position to be initiated within his physical body. This can be achieved by the Christ-impulse. He who can so intensely immerse himself in the events which occurred at that time, through the life of Christ Jesus in Palestine and the Mystery of Golgotha, that he can live in these events as in a spiritual reality, objectively visible to him; when the whole power of these events communicates itself even to the circulation of his blood, such a man will attain by this experience the same results which were once attained by the withdrawal of the etheric body.

Thus we see that the Christ-impulse brings something into the world which enables the human being to work upon the inner force which makes the blood pulsate in his veins. No abnormal event takes place and there is no immersion in water; the one and only influence at work here is the mighty power of the Christ-Individuality. The baptism is not in any material substance but in the influence of the spirit, and ordinary everyday consciousness undergoes no change. Through the spirit poured forth as the Christ-impulse, something flows into the body which otherwise can result only from physical and physiological evolution — through fire, an inner fire which expresses itself in the circulation of the blood. John immersed his disciples in water; the etheric body left the physical body and the disciple could behold the spiritual world. But when man opens himself to the power of the Christ-impulse, the experiences of his astral body are poured into the etheric body and clairvoyance ensues. Here we have an explanation of the expression ‘to baptize with the spirit and with fire’. Here too you have before you an explanation of the difference between the baptism by John and the baptism by Christ, in accordance with the facts. Thus a new class of initiates was rendered possible by the Christ-impulse. Previous to this there were among men some few who were disciples of the great masters and were led into the Mysteries; their etheric body was raised so that they should be witnesses of the spirit, and go forth among men and say: ‘There is a spiritual world! We have seen it ourselves! As you see the plants and stones, so have we seen the spiritual world!’ These were the eye witnesses. Issuing from the depths of the Mysteries, they proclaimed the Gospel of the Spirit, in accordance with ancient wisdom, it is true. They led humanity back to the wisdom out of which the human being was born; whereas through Christ there arose initiates who could arrive at an observation of the spiritual within their physical body and in waking consciousness. Through the Christ-impulse they discerned what the old initiates had discerned: that there is a spiritual world. To be an initiate in the new sense, and to proclaim the Gospel of the spiritual world in the sense of Christ, it was essential that the power which was in Christ should overflow as an impulse on to the disciple who was to be the evangelist of that power. When did a Christ-impulse in this sense first arise?”

The rest is all about the raising of Lazarus from the dead.

    1. A miracle, in a sense, would then be a turning point event. The issue then arises whether or not individuals can Witness it or not. Again, we know that few were able to understand what was happening during Christ’s time. I don’t see today any different, in terms of miracles. It’s been pointed out that this is a turning point in time. The issue regarding Lazarus seems deeply intertwined with this. I think it is safe to say that Steiner was deliberate in what he discussed, to whom he discussed/addressed to, and when. That is no coincidence, and certainly as ‘closing thoughts’ for his earthly incarnation.

      1. The Gospel of John is unique for describing seven specific ‘signs’, or attesting miracles, which occurred at intervals over the three years that Christ walked the earth. Each one required the Christ power to effect a miracle in the temporal realm. The first was the act of turning water into wine at the wedding in Cana. This was an etheric body effect, which made the water taste like wine, and also have the alcoholic effect. The last was the act of raising the physical body of a dead man to life. This required the final measure of the Christ power in displaying that He was the Light of the World.

Now, with every miracle conducted by Christ, the force required went over into Jesus of Nazareth. Thus, by the time of the final miracle, Jesus as the Son of Man bore what is called, The Cup, which is the containment of the Sun Forces coming from Christ . Thus, each of the seven recognized miracles outwardly achieved, had its inward effect in bringing the sun forces into the bodily sheaths of Jesus of Nazareth. This was designed to set up the pretext for conducting the Mystery of Golgotha. The bodily sheaths of Jesus were to be crucified on the Cross in order that these Sun forces; forces of rejuvenation and resurrection of a tired old earth, could begin the renewal of an earth, now redeemed.

Thus, the description in John, specifically, of seven attesting miracles, is proof that an Eyewitness was accounting for each sign, and its moment. He even knew that the Mother of Jesus was there on two separate occasions. He was also there to see the Son of Man glorified at the Last Supper. This is coming up on Thursday, for those that trace Holy Week. Even Resurrection Sunday has the extraordinary experience of Mary Magdalene at the empty tomb, ref. chapter 20. She experienced the two Jesus men.

        1. This subject is heavy, I won’t deny that. At the risk of falling short of being able to express what I’m gathering from it, is is this very subject that seems to be a missing link. 1924 was the year of the second Apocalypse lectures given to priests, is that correct? And wasn’t it not available to the public until sometime in the 1980’s or 90’s? In ‘The School of Chartres: Its Importance For Our Time,’ Renê M Querido points out a visit Steiner had with Edouard Schurè inside the cathedral regarding the relationship between John the Baptist and John the Evangelist… all while the first Goetheanum was being built (in 1914). Again, at risk of not expressing this point clearly, you can see how much of Steiner’s work is based on that of this ‘being’ whom we are speaking of, and who is mentioned in his last address. He is either a great plagiarist, or inextricably linked. Steiner, after all, finally laid to rest at the foot of his own sculpture of Christ.

  2. Hi Hazel,

Raphael’s birth and death on April 6th really signifies a milestone. Good Friday. And yet, we can see the very approach to our own Good Friday this year on April 15th.

Referring to the Last Address of RS, he says that Raphael was a painter, and then Novalis was a poet. Then, another appeared who was a philosopher. Who could he be? Of course, Lazarus is involved with John, Raphael, and Novalis. Steiner says so in this final address. He wants Lazarus to be the known unknown. Does this make sense, Hazel? You brought it up in the first place. Thanks for doing it.

Approaching Holy Week makes me think we can finally make our mark. CRC is known for making the mark with those he selects. Steiner says so especially in GA 130, wherein he speaks of the mission of Christian Rosenkreutz for the first time.

    1. Hi Steve, when you mention ‘another appeared who was a philosopher’, where is this indicated? Are we speaking past tense, or present? This is a being, if I may say so, that could be considered the First Witness. And it’s true that the time of Christ, not everyone even recognised the miracle that was taking place. And to be the one who saw the instance that Jesus became Christ sets the tone for the rest of us. That’s my understanding in Steiner’s last address, and why this being is important and at the vanguard of the Michaelic stream. This also implies that a certain presupposition of a constitution, or psycho-spiritual disposition, of an individual is necessary to be able to ‘witness’ miracles actually taking place. It is safe to say this is how the Gospels in the New Testament were written. They were all witnesses! I wonder how many people at that time thought they were crazy or eccentric? Yet, individuals that may be carrying the same karma today would meet just the same prejudice.

      1. I am a sphinx on occasion, and this is one of those times. You see, for people to hear spiritual scientific explanations without at least a hint of riddle and enigma makes for what is by now a rote interpretation. Yet, Steiner made his abbreviated final address with this exactly in mind.

        https://rsarchive.org/Lectures/InEJRN_index.html

He is obviously protecting his spiritual biography to the end, but he wants to reveal himself in a way that the more discerning members might grasp something about him. So, please read carefully the first few sentences of this last address, because he is about to go from standing up to lying down for the duration. The figure of Lazarus is key here. Lazarus was involved with John, and then continues to influence Raphael, and Novalis. Raphael was born in 1483, which is one year before the death of Christian Rosenkreutz in 1484. CRC had lived for 106 years in order to produce the three Rosicrucian manifestos , which are generally known today. As such, he leaves them as an inheritance to Raphael to depict as an artist; yes, a painter. Raphael lives just 37 years, which is the second moon node in an individual life. Novalis is born in 1772, and when he was 12 years old, CRC dies on February 27, 1784. By now, CRC has been identified as the Comte Saint Germain, whose very enigmatic life flowed through the first eight decades of the 18th century, and ended with his revelation of the evil plot of the Illuminati/Jacobins in promoting the French Revolution. Novalis is compelled by some motivational force to study the philosophy of Fichte around 1797, which stands as the poet to philosopher inspiration.

Now, exactly 77 years after the death of Saint Germain, Rudolf Steiner is born. When he was 18 years old, and this can be found in his autobiography, chapter three, he is compelled to sell his school books there in Vienna, and buy everything he can find on the philosophy of Fichte and read it. This is the extension from poet to philosopher. Steiner was a lousy poet, but a great philosopher. This takes us to where we are now. The mission of Christian Rosenkreutz in today’s world means what? Answer: Anthroposophical Spiritual Science.

I am so happy that Hazel has given me an affectionate appellation. It means a lot because I often wrestle with coming into conflict with her. It even keeps me up at night. Tonight I hope to sleep peacefully knowing that Hazel cares about me. Thanks.

          RS & CR – Sophia-Michael-Christos forever

          1. Here is a key passage from the Last Address:

“When we look back into olden times, we see rise up before us within the traditions of Judaism the prophetic figure of Elijah. We know what significance the prophet Elijah had for the people of the Old Testament, and therewith for all mankind; we know how he set before them the goal and destiny of their existence. And we have shown how in the course of time the being who was present in Elijah appeared again at the very most important moment of human evolution, appeared again so that Christ Jesus Himself could give him the Initiation he was to receive for the evolution of mankind. For the being of Elijah appeared again in Lazarus-John — who are in truth one and the same figure, as you will have understood from my book “Christianity as Mystical Fact.”

We also know that Lazarus reincarnated as Christian Rosenkreutz in the 13th century. It was a short incarnation wherein he had to be nursed by the College of Twelve in order to regain strength. His next incarnation was over a hundred years in length from 1378 to 1484.

            1. We have talked about this many time…
My feeling is that by clinging to this one quote & taking it literally there is a danger of not seeing the possibility of what Steiner often refers to as Spiritual Economy, where a part of the soul of one individuality passes over into another, incorporating them.

The danger here is to conflate John the Baptist with Lazarus, who became John, thru his rising from the dead by Christ Jesus in the 1st Christian Initiation. When in the underworld there was indeed a meeting with the beheaded Baptist who was acting as a kind of group soul incorporating into all the apostles, & most especially into Lazarus, who then took on the tile John as well…

          2. Hi Kyle,

It was your perceptive comment here that really motivated me to go on and risk breaching the anthro-dogma concerning Steiner’s distinctly possible relationship to the lineage of Elijah, John, Raphael, Novalis, __________. You had written this about a Witness at the time of Christ, and this is exactly what makes the Gospel of St. John the veritable “Gospel of Gospels”. You wrote:

“Hi Steve, when you mention ‘another appeared who was a philosopher’, where is this indicated? Are we speaking past tense, or present? This is a being, if I may say so, that could be considered the First Witness. And it’s true that in the time of Christ, not everyone even recognised the miracle that was taking place. Yet, individuals that may be carrying the same karma today would meet just the same prejudice.”

Kyle, these are really astute thoughts! Way out of the box of conventional thoughts and beliefs about the Gospels, and what they mean to say. Steiner obviously had the ability to go right into the permaculture of that era as it actually happened. An eyewitness did write the Gospel of John as it unfolded and took place from beginning to end. That is noted by its linear and chronological character. The other three, the so-called ‘synoptic’ gospels, are related in that they are more out of sequence, and thus, anecdotal. Yet, they bear the same truth as the one written by the eyewitness. This eyewitness has to do with Lazarus.

          3. Dear Hazel,

I see now that this appears as competition, like a debate, which you were good at in High School. I never want more than to be informative, and if this cuts, then why the incision? If Maverick also feels the slight edge of the sword, then I most humbly apologize. I do not want to keep anything from moving on as we approach Palm Sunday.

BTW, today, April 9th, is what they call “Lazarus Saturday” in the Eastern Orthodox church, and wherein it is celebrated that Christ and the disciples return to Bethany just before the triumphal entry into Jerusalem. The Gospel of John, chapter 12, gives the details. Lazarus is seen as sitting at the table with Christ. Mary anoints the feet of Christ for a second time. She had done this before when she was only known as “the sinning woman”, depicted in Luke, chapter 7. It was when Christ was asked to dine with Simon the Pharisee.

Now, in chapter 12, Christ says, “leave her alone for she is anointing Me for My burial. You always have the poor to take care of, but she prepares Me for My death”, [which is a one of a kind in nature]. Then, the next day, which this year is Sunday April 10th, the triumphal entry into Jerusalem takes place, which all four Gospels duly accord. Christ comes in as about as humble as you can get; on a donkey colt. He only expands in comport after that. Right to the end.

            1. For me debate club wasn’t about competition. I always loved to hear what the other points of view were, & I often learned something or else I was affirmed by my research…

              1. Hi Hazel,

I know that we have had this discussion from the Last Address from before; thanks for reminding me. Yes, I remember your notion from the Principle of Spiritual Economy about incorporation. Yet, facts from the Gospels clearly indicate that Lazarus died, and especially in the Gospel of Luke, chapter 16, it is shown that Lazarus went to Abraham’s bosom, with no possibility of being raised in his own soul and spirit.

Yet, the corporeal body of Lazarus was raised. We know this as the 7th attesting miracle, and by way of the initiation of fire and the holy spirit. Now, here is the real nature of this blessed event. It is John the Baptist who is returned to earth with the raising of Lazarus. Christ has the power over the Law of the Skeleton, which is brought back to life bearing John, who had been working from the outside for a time as the Elijah-John stream. Thus, the folk soul of the twelve returns with the raising of Lazarus, and this is what the disciples experience with the return to Bethany on Lazarus Saturday, April 9th this year.

So, indeed, Steiner’s remark from the Last Address is meant to convey as simply as possible that Lazarus became involved in the stream of Elijah, John, Raphael, and Novalis.
