Greetings friends – Here we are: Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, (רֹאשׁ הַשָּׁנָה‎, literally “head of the year“) the first of the High Holy Days or Yamim Noraim (Days of Awe), a two-day celebration that starts tonight at sunset, as the New Moon makes her way into the light. It weds seriousness with celebration & begins the 10 days of repentance that culminate in Yom Kippur. This festival is believed to be the anniversary of the creation of Adam & Eve, acknowledging their first actions toward the realization of humanity’s role in the world.

The 1st panel of the Foundation Stone Meditation askes us to ‘Practice Spirit Recalling.” Recognizing ancient traditions, we can renewal time honored themes that still apply today:

The New Year focuses our attention on themes of discernment, repentance, memory & the Divine presence in the world (The Shekinah). At the same time, Rosh Hashanah invites us to celebrate birth & creation on many levels. The liturgy suggests that Rosh Hashanah commemorates the creation of the world.

Family-oriented services often include a birthday cake for the world. Customs include sounding the shofar (a hollowed-out ram’s horn) & eating symbolic foods such as apples dipped in honey to emphasize the sweetness of starting the cycle of seasons once again; & round challah to remind us of the cycles of life.

Rosh Hashanah Unwrapped - High Holidays

What is your birthday wish for the world? Are you willing to personally practice themes like forgiveness, as you recall that the Divine essence is in all that lives?

How can you bring sweetness into life – making everyday a ‘Day of Awe’ – pulsing with reverence & wonder?

How are YOUR thoughts, words, deeds, adding to the re-creation of the world?

  1. I am reminded here of how Awe relates to Agape, which is the Love of God that is so immense and unconditional that we can only achieve it in stages of the evolution of our cerebro-spinal system. Steiner’s “living thinking” is the current advancement in this process of meeting the Primal Divine Father behind It All. When Christ sacrificed His Life on the Cross He was pierced 5 times; thus, He was wounded in order to express a kind of supreme sacrifice that would begin to enable humanity to experience Agape, or God’s total and Unconditional Love. We have actually made great strides in this knowing and believing in God’s complete commitment to the Human Race, now evolving in the Earth Sphere.

I had occasion on the eve of Rosh Hashanah to ask someone of the Jewish faith this question: “Why do you use the expression G-d?” Here was the answer:

“There is a biblical prohibition against desecrating G-d’s name, if we write G-d’s name out fully and the page is printed and happens to fall on the ground and people step on it or similar occurrences, G-d’s name would be desecrated, in order to avoid that we do not spell the Name out fully but spell it “G-d”.

I wrote back to say: “This is very similar, and maybe even the same, as the use of the Tetragrammaton YHWH as the symbol for the name that could not be spoken. Since G-d and YHWH designate the same Being, then it appears that the one has developed out of the other. Very interesting. Thanks for answering the question.”

Yet, does this rationale really apply so much today when we have the fruits of “living thinking”?

    1. Now that Christ is the embodiment of Earth – I wouuldn’t think anything would be desecrated if it fell to the ground & was stepped on.
When we change our thinking to see that the Earth is a living Being, then nothing can me desecrated but our thinking…

      1. Judaism has issues with Christ, which is problematical today. In fact, I see it as a big part of the evil that infects the Holy Land and reduces the Palestinians to a small territory of occupation on the West Bank. I hesitate to ask questions about it, but it is clearly time that Judaism meets and accepts Christianity. The name of the website is: Chabad.org. They encourage questions.

I feel that I know what their dispute would be. Rudolf Steiner has addressed it in various place, e.g., The Gospel of John, lecture IV on the Raising of Lazarus. The Jewish form of worship was steeped in a kind of conservatism that was violated when Christ raised Lazarus. They saw that the Mysteries were descending to Earth, and this had to be stopped. And so, from that time on they sought a means to kill Christ. Now, today, Christ doesn’t exist for them at all. They seek to retain the old traditions until the end of time, like this G-d, and all the other 613 expressions of ceremonial order on a daily basis.

I hope I don’t offend anybody with this. It has gotten me into trouble before.

        1. Yes it hurts to see the misuse of power by those who reject the cornerstone.

We know from Spiritual Science that everything becomes decadent after the original impulse has served its purpose. The ancient mysteries & the Old testament laid the ground work & the Hebrew people had a great destiny – to bring the vessel for the Christ. This Turning Point of Time changed everything, & it is for this that we must now strive to understand & put into practice. AND the essence of the ancient Holy Days can still be renewed, applied today – in Christ consciousness. This is important.

It is about experiencing immortal energies in mortal body..!!
we have a human body as a device..

          1. “It is about experiencing immortal energies in mortal body..!!
we have a human body as a device..”

Yes, this is true. But to continue to bring Consciousness into this mortal body, we have to exert a great influence of Will. Steiner called it the New Yoga Will, and equated it with the Michael Culture. Here, he gives it a kind of pictorial description:

            https://rsarchive.org/Lectures/MissMich/19191130p01.html

In truth, it is hard work and effort to make the mortal body a vessel of pure thought, and operation. It actually leads to self-condemnation as we realize our faults. Yet, at the same time, it is facing Karma now, rather than later. This is the force of Conscience, which Michael holds on our behalf. Etherization of the blood is the primal methodology. It is continuous, but needs force in order to be self-revealing. This requires Action.

        3. Steiner explained the linguistics of G-d in his famous “Essence of Jewry” lecture of May 8, 1924, GA 353

          https://rsarchive.org/Lectures/GA353/English/RSPC1950/19240508p01.html

“Every Hebrew word is always full of meaning. It was a peculiarity with the Jews to write only the consonants; later on, the vowels were indicated by means of signs.

The vowels themselves were not written; everybody might pronounce them in his own way, so that one man said: J-e-h-o-v-a … another said: J-e-h-e-v-a … a third said: J-e-h-a-v-e … a fourth, J-o-h-a-v-e. — The vowel sounds were pronounced as they were felt.

And that is why such a designation as the name “Jehova” which had been instituted by the priests in this particular form, was called the “unutterable Name” … because it was not permissible to make arbitrary use of the vowels.”

          1. Hi Tom,

The title to this lecture in the German language is:

            Das Wesen des Judantum

This translates into English as: The Essence of Judaism.

“Jewry” is a derogatory term, and Steiner never used it. Yet, you choose to use it. The lecture from GA 353 is very informative about a culture that needs to rise up, realize itself, and move forward into reality.

Any discourse with the Jewish community offers an interesting perspective on Christ, and whether He existed at all. The Roman Empire had a great deal to do with this, and especially when Constantine the Great was emperor. Yet, the crux goes back to Caiaphas at the time of Christ, and his own plot to save the Jewish nation:

47 Therefore the chief priests and the Pharisees convened a council, and were saying, “What are we doing? For this man is performing many signs. 48 If we let Him go on like this, all men will believe in Him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.” 49 But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all, 50 nor do you take into account that it is expedient for you that one man die for the people, and that the whole nation not perish.” 51 Now he did not say this on his own initiative, but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the nation, 52 and not for the nation only, but in order that He might also gather together into one the children of God who are scattered abroad. 53 So from that day on they planned together to kill Him. John 11

So, what comes first; the chicken or the egg?
