Who is this John of St. John’s-Tide?
Studying Rudolf Steiner’s work on the Gospels, we gain profound insights that have the power to touch deep truths buried in the unconscious regions of our soul, regarding one of the most powerful personalities in the history of humankind. In the Gospel of St. John the Evangelist, right after the mighty description of the evolution of the cosmos, we read: “There came a man, send from God, his name was John.” (John 1.6.)
In the original Greek, Johannes, is made up of the vowels “E – O – Ah“, 3 very powerful Eurythmy gestures. The “E” represents the upright human being – one arm pointing toward heaven, the other left to rest, grounding toward the earth; an admonition to be here now. The “O” is a round gesture of “inclusive inwardness”, an embracing of the soul. The “Ah” is an opening to heavenly revelation; both arms raised in a V, becoming a vessel that opens to heaven, a gesture of “vision, reverence &revelation”.
The Gospel of St. Luke describes the birth of John; how an angel appeared to the priest Zechariah, telling him, “your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, & you shall call him John.” (Luke 1.13.) The angel also foretells the task of this being John: “… even from his mother’s womb will he be filled with the Holy Spirit. And he will turn many sons of Israel to the Lord their God again. He will be his forerunner and will pave his way, bearing within him the spirit and power of Elijah, to change men’s hearts so that fathers shall rediscover the meaning of childhood, and those who have become alienated from God shall find the meaning of Good again. So shall he make a well-prepared people ready for the Lord “(Luke 1.15-17.)
The birth of John takes place just after the height of Summer, on June 24th, framed by the births of the two Jesus children. On the one hand, the birth of the Matthew Jesus child on January 6th, with the visitation of the ‘three wise men from the East’, taking place in Bethlehem. And months later, we hear of the other birth, of the Luke Jesus child, on December 24th, with the heavenly revelation to the shepherds.
In another mystery, we see the spiritual body or angel of Gautama Buddha, which appears in the etheric-astral realm, first, in the meeting between Elizabeth, (just before John the Baptist is born), with Mary, the mother of Jesus (Luke 1.39-56.) & then also at the revelation to the shepherds (Luke 11.8-15.).
Rudolf Steiner tells us that the Gospel of St. Luke brings us a new form of Christ-centered Buddhism, expressing the kind of love & compassion that can be understood by even the simplest souls. The interplay between the 2 polarities of the Buddha to John the Baptist is interesting to contemplate.
John the Baptist’s sermon at the river Jordan shows how the teachings of Buddha come forward in a new form. – Just like the Buddha declared certain truths & warnings in his famous sermon at Benares some five hundred years before, so too did JB speak in a similar way. Buddha says: “Do not think, because you are a Brahman, you are able to advance …“, John changes this admonition to fit his time, saying: “Do not think, because you are children of Abraham …” Buddha gave the teaching of love & compassion – JB gave the parable of the man who has two coats, how we must share with those that have none. And just as the monks came to Buddha with questions; now the tax collectors & soldiers come to John the Baptist.
After his life as an ascetic, JB begins publicly preaching & baptizing. In the 5th Gospel, Steiner describes how JB was close to the community of the Essenes.
Yep there’s more (Remember, the Festival of St. John’s-Tide lasts 4 weeks)
Until soon

26 June 2021 – “Speaking with the Stars”: On the last nights of June 2021, watch for three worlds in space: Bella Luna, Jupiter, Saturn. The waning gibbous moon is past full on these nights. It’s rising later in the evening or after midnight. On June 25, Saturn follows the moon into the sky by roughly an hour. Jupiter follows an hour or so after Saturn. But the moon is moving, always, toward the east in orbit around Earth. As a result, the moon rises an average of 50 minutes later each night. So the moon catches up to Saturn and then Jupiter. On the night of June 26 (morning of June 27), the moon is near Saturn in the sky. By the night of June 27, the moon rises between Jupiter and Saturn. And so it goes, as the evenings pass, with the moon shifting constantly toward the east. ~earthsky.org
Rudolf Steiner’s Lectures on this day(RSarchives)
ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY (Rudolf Steiner’s original Calendar of the Soul)
363 – Julian the Apostate murdered. Rudolf Steiner speaks a lot about him as Tycho Brahe, astronomer, astrologer & alchemist & Herzeloyde, Percival’s mother, in Karmic Relationships Vol. 4 Lec. 5
“…One of the outstanding figures in world history is Julian the Apostate (a successor of Constantine) who fell by the hand of an assassin in the campaign against the Persians in the year A.D. 363. Julian occupies a special place in the history of the West. His life and career show how the course of world history is determined by the clash of contending forces
Now from earliest childhood Julian was held in low esteem by the Imperial family and their adherents. In the age with which we are dealing it was the custom to anticipate the future of an individual such as Julian by resorting to prenatal prophecies. The Imperial family had been obliged to conclude from the predictions of the Sibylline oracles that Julian would actively oppose the policy pursued by the Emperor Constantine. From the first, therefore, they tried to prevent Julian from being raised to the purple. It was decided that he should be murdered while still a child and preparations were made to have him butchered along with his brother. There was a strange aura attaching to Julian which inspired terror in those around him and countless stories relating to his personality testify to the fact that there was something uncanny about him. On one occasion during his campaign in Gaul a somnambulist cried out as the army passed by: “There is the man who will restore the old Gods and their images.”
The appearance of Julian at this moment in history must be seen as something predestined, something deeply significant. As often happens in such cases his life was spared lest his murder should bring greater disaster in its train. People persuaded themselves that whatever steps he might take against the policies of Constantine could be quickly nullified. And precautionary measures were taken to neutralize the dangerous tendencies of Julian’s make-up and his leanings towards Paganism. In the first place it was decided to give him a sound Christian education which accorded with the ideas of Constantine. It was wasted effort and met with no response. Anything which had survived from the ancient Hellenic traditions fascinated him. Where powerful forces are at work in such a personality they ultimately prevail. And so, because his mentors sought to protect him from dangerous associations he was driven into the arms of Hellenic tutors and was introduced to Hellenic culture and civilization. When he grew older Julian learned how the neo-Platonic philosophers were imbued with the spirit of Hellenism and in consequence he was finally initiated into the Mysteries of Eleusis. Thus at a time when the Roman Emperors had already dispensed with the principle of initiation, an initiate in the person of Julian once again sat on the throne of the Caesars.
Everything that Julian undertook must be judged in the light of his initiation into the Eleusinian Mysteries (and history has been at great pains to misrepresent his actions in every possible way). Through direct spiritual perception he learned the secrets of cosmic and world evolution, the spiritual origin of the world and how spiritual forces operate in the planetary and solar systems.
Through complicated psychological processes which are difficult to describe in detail he lighted upon the idea of utilizing the last surviving remnants of initiation in order to ensure continuity in evolution. In reality he was not an opponent of Christianity; he simply favoured the continuity of Hellenism. He was more interested in promoting Hellenism than in opposing Christianity. With passionate enthusiasm he strove to arrest the decline of Hellenism and to transmit its traditions to posterity. He was opposed to any sudden break in continuity, any radical change.
The thought occurred to him: “I have already been initiated into the Eleusinian Mysteries. Perhaps it is possible to have myself initiated into the Persian Mysteries and into the Mysteries which are in accordance with the doctrine of the Manichaeans. By this means perhaps I may be able to achieve my aim — the continuity of the pagan Mysteries.” This was a momentous thought. Just as Alexander’s campaign had deeper motives than the mere conquest of Asia, so Julian’s expedition had other motives than the conquest of Persia. He wished to find out whether he could further his objective with the help of the Persian Mysteries.
The Manichaeans did not cultivate abstract ideas which divorced the world of thought from the world of reality. The Manichaeans and the initiates of the Eleusinian Mysteries were alike incapable of abstract thinking. In earlier lectures I attempted to show the difference between logical concepts and concepts in conformity with reality. The basic principle of Manichaeism was to cultivate only those ideas which are consistent with reality. Not that unreal ideas do not play a part in life; unfortunately they play a large part in life, especially at the present day, and the part they play is disastrous
The aim of Manichaeism was the conquest of evil and of matter by thought. Julian was brought face to face with the deeper implications of the problem of evil and the relation of Christ Jesus to this problem. He hoped to find an answer through initiation into the Persian Mysteries and to return to Europe with the solution. But unfortunately he fell by an assassin’s hand during the Persian campaign. It can be proved historically that this was the work of an adherent of Constantine. Thus we see that in the course of history the attempt to establish the “principle of continuity” was fraught with tragedy and that in the case of Julian it led into a blind alley.” Rudolf Steiner, Building Stones for an Understanding of the Mystery of Golgotha, lecture 7

When John was beheaded, the spiritual stream of Elijah-John, having been contained in an individual human being, worked from the outside again in many remarkable ways. Steiner discusses this working of Elijah-John in his lectures on the Gospel of Mark, GA 139. So, it was to be the destiny of John to sacrifice his earthly life to the greater cause of the overall stream, now working in total support of Christ. John was not beheaded by any sort of karmic consequence associated with his having any kind of doubt. Read “John’s Last Testimony” here for proof of his unflagging faith in the Messiah:
https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=john+3&version=NASB1995
Thus, as part of John’s destiny as the forerunner in life before the entry of Christ into earth evolution, and having seen this occur, and knowing that his role now was to recede more into the background, i.e., “He must increase while I must decrease”, he takes on the issue of adultery with Herod in order to recapitulate what he had done with Ahab in his earlier incarnation. But what happens with his death is that John remains present on earth with the whole spiritual stream of Elijah-John, and its continued working as a kind of organism of general increase, not decrease. John is redeemed, even through death.
And this is what sets up the return to earth with the death of Lazarus, who is also a Forerunner. Steiner was very careful for a certain reason in not giving more specifics about this mysterious Lazarus. He only really begins to explain about him in the lectures given in September 1911, GA 130, and even here he veils the matter of the identity of this disciple at the time of Christ.
We are talking about what Spiritual Science calls ‘Spiritual Econonmy’ where the shealths of one individuality goes into another to enhance their work.
Steiner talks about this in many cases. Of course it is very potent when it occurs with initates such as John the baptist & Lazarus John. And the reason it is veiled in those early lectures is because the time wasn’t right to reveal these complicated overlays…
I don’t entirely agree, but I get what you are getting at, Hazel. Spiritual Economy is a very important fact of spiritual evolution, and the reason why initiations are taking place, and even an acceleration of the overall plan of achieving the Logos. Etheric-body copies, astral-body copies, ego copies, it is all a hugely important subject, and why Steiner at the outset of the year 1909 began to go into detail about the matter of spiritual economy.
https://wn.rsarchive.org/Lectures/GA109/English/AP1986/PrSpEc_index.html
As well, this course enabled Steiner to discuss certain matters for the first time, such as how Zarathustra first arose as the great Persian Initiate in the Ancient Cultural Epoch of Persia. In his Hamburg course on the Gospel of John, GA 103, Steiner had yet to identify Jesus of Nazareth with Zarathustra, and so it became imperative to begin to describe Zarathustra and his contributions to spiritual history. This is because in the Kassel course on the Gospel of John, given from June 24 to July 7, 1909, GA 112, Steiner identifies Jesus of Nazareth as having the Zarathustra-Ego behind it, and receiving the Christ at age 30.
Then, as we know, the paradigm-shift occurred with the lectures on the Gospel of Luke, GA 114. Certain things from the previous John courses had to be revised when it was disclosed that the Solomon Jesus did not receive the Christ at age 30, but rather, a Jesus child that had never been born on earth before. Steiner even conveys some of these changes in Luke, such as the actual identity of the true author of the Gospel of John as being an initiate bearing inspirative-intuitional clairvoyance. This would have bearing on what Steiner had previously said in lecture four of GA 103, which you have kindly cited.
You see, while it appeared entirely accurate to say that the raising of Lazarus in order to become the “disciple whom the Lord loved”, and writer of the Gospel of John in 1908, this all had to be revised in 1909, after the two Jesus children, and their respective spiritual streams, were outlined in the Gospel of Luke.
This is why Steiner reveals the mysterious “Master Jesus” for the first time in lecture 7. This is the true author of the Gospel of John; the Eyewitness from day one.
I guess i am not vibing with the word ‘revised’. The way it rolls out for me is that Steiner is giving out the pearls when the spiritual world wants him to & when the people are ready to recieve it…
Maybe I should have said, ‘expanded’ upon. Steiner’s own growth and development was exponential, year by year since 1900, when he was called at age 39 to begin to speak openly about spiritual matters. For example, Steiner reveals many important clues about himself and its present incarnation and purpose with the lectures from 1904-1905, on “The Temple Legend”. This course becomes increasingly focused on a reconstruction of the Temple, which Steiner accomplished as a kind of “Master Builder” with the Goetheanum. Also, some seven years before giving the course on the “Mission of Christian Rosenkreutz”, GA 130, wherein important clues are given concerning the identity of CRC, Steiner gave this informative lecture, which links Hiram to St. Germain.
https://wn.rsarchive.org/Lectures/GA093/English/RSP1985/19041104p01.html
So, we know that Steiner was in a position to be very revealing about spiritual matters, and the trend can be seen to be one of revealing spiritual facts/truths from an external standpoint in the beginning, like with “Temple Legend”, and then proceeding to go evermore inward in scope, such as the lectures that first reveal not one, but two Jesus children, and how their streams come to unite in Christ. Very inwardly directed is this course on the Gospel of Luke.
Yes, well said, thank you
Hazel and Maverick,
Steiner had to revise many items of perception when he graduated from the Gospel of John to the Gospel of Luke. With Luke, a whole paradigm shift occurred. Why? Because rather than just the one Jesus of Nazareth, behind whom was the great initiate Zarathustra, who Steiner indicates as receiving Christ at 30 years of age, ref. GA 112, there now were two Jesus children to account for. This changes the makeup of the Gospel of John in a number of ways. For example, the genesis of the Nathan Jesus and his cousin John, was not previously known. Much of what needed to be revised and expanded comes out of what Steiner carefully explains in the Luke lectures. At some point, just before this course began, i.e., GA 114, the veritable floodgates of the Akashic Chronicle opened up with full force of disclosure.
Maverick, JB was beheaded not for any doubts about Christ, but because he was compelled to come up to Herod Antipas over the issue of adultery seen in his marrying his brother Philip’s wife. She even took on the name, Herodias, and the insinuation of adultery caused a fatal grudge to form against John. This replicates the incident in 2nd Kings, when Elijah comes up to King Ahab over the issue of his wife, Jezebel’s worship of Baal.
Steiner does indicate important factors concerning the raising of Lazarus here:
https://wn.rsarchive.org/Lectures/GA103/English/AP1962/19080522p01.html
Then, just a little more than a year later, much had to be revised and expanded. Yet, Steiner never really looked back on the Gospel of John, except for the course he gave in Stockholm, Sweden in January 1910. Not in English, so I am doing a rough translation of it now. This is where Steiner first indicates the reappearance of Christ in the Etheric.
More later on this very important subject of the true identity of Lazarus and John. Many factors to consider.
Hazel and Steve, I only said it was something to consider. Your mention of Herodias’s grudge against JB is the old interpretation, but doesn’t seem to go far enough in tracking down how this was allowed from the spiritual realm, and I’m proposing an alternate, a newer understanding of his beheading. I appreciate your belief in the old interpretation, but the fact is that, while Herodias provided the impetus leading to Herod’s quandary, it was ultimately Herod’s decision to make.
One of the things I’m learning, from the Air Trial in KOHW, is to be open to a new interpretation of something. Steiner says “…experience should serve the purpose of perceiving the new and not of judging it by the standard of the old.” This is from the paragraph concerning the “draught of forgetfulness”.
Herod will have his own karma regarding his decision, but doubt, in such a great soul as JB’s, is a serious matter. Recall Jesus’ words to Simon Peter, directly after He praised him for Peter’s spiritual insight; he said to Peter “Get thee behind me Satan.”
We really need to get some input from the spiritual realm on this. But I’ve got other priorities right now, so will leave it up to the initiates to reveal the real truth.
Thank you Maverick – Open mindedness is the 5th of the essential exercises, perfect in the Air trial that we are all constantly facing
That’s a great point Hazel, about the quality of open-mindedness. It’s essential and admirable to maintain a flexibility. As we age, the tendency is to become hardened in a fixed viewpoint. I always enjoy the scene where family can sit around the table and make room for the views of all members; everyone feeling included. There are certain things they can agree on, and others where each can bring a divergent view. What difference does it make if it’s white bread, brown bread, black bread, raisin bread – as long as there’s agreement that all bread comes from the Maker of heaven and earth.
ha, I love the bread analogy! My daughter just came home from a year away in Sweden & we were having that kind of conversation you mentioned. Sweet.
Steiner describes how each of the gospels gives a differant perspective, there was no need to revise the Gospel of John which Steiner says was the most sublime of them all…
From Steiner’s The Gospel of John: “Nowadays this Gospel of St. John constitutes a stumbling block for the materialists who carry on Bible research when they compare it with the other three, the so-called synoptic Gospels. The picture of Christ that arises before them out of the first three is so flattering to the learned gentlemen of our time!…The picture of Christ yielded by the John Gospel is indeed a very different one.”
From Steiner’s The Gospel of John: “The resurrected Lazarus, as we have seen, was John — or better, the writer of the John Gospel. It was he who could introduce the Gospel of the Christ Being into the world because he was, so to say, the first initiate in the Christian sense.”
From Steiner’s Gospel of John: “The individuality Lazarus had to be initiated in such a way that he could be a witness of the spiritual worlds. An expression is used, a very significant expression in the language of the Mysteries, “that the Lord loved Lazarus.” What does “to love” mean in the language of the Mysteries? It expresses the relationship of the pupil to the teacher. “He whom the Lord loved” is the most intimate, the most deeply initiated pupil. The Lord Himself had initiated Lazarus and as an initiate Lazarus arose from the grave, which means from his place of initiation. This same expression “Whom the Lord loved” is always used later in connection with John, or perhaps we should say in connection with the writer of the Gospel of St. John, for the name “John” is not used. He is the “Beloved Disciple” to whom the Gospel refers. He is the risen Lazarus himself and the writer of the Gospel wished to say: — “What I have to offer, I say by virtue of the initiation which has been conferred upon me by the Lord Himself.” Therefore the writer of the Gospel distinguishes between what occurred before and what occurred after the raising of Lazarus. Before the raising, an initiate of the old order is quoted, one who has attained a knowledge of the Spirit, one whose testimony is repeatedly announced to be true. “However, what is to be said concerning the most profound of matters, concerning the Mystery of Golgotha, I myself say, I the Risen One; but only after I have been raised, can I speak concerning it!” And so we have in the first part of the Gospel, the testimony of the old John — in the second half, the testimony of the new John whom the Lord Himself had initiated, for this is the risen Lazarus. Only thus do we grasp the real meaning of this chapter. These words are written there because John wished to say: I call upon the testimony of my super-sensible organs, my spiritual powers of perception. What I have related I have not seen in the ordinary physical world, but in the spiritual world in which I have dwelt by virtue of the initiation which the Lord has conferred upon me.”
Here is an important passage from the Luke lectures concerning John the Baptist as the forerunner of Christ. You see, both he and his cousin Jesus, came out of the Great Mother Lodge of Humanity; Old Soul, and the youngest of Young Souls.
“A forerunner of Jesus of Nazareth was to arise in John the Baptist. To say more about the Individuality of the Baptist will only be possible as time goes on. But to begin with we will consider the picture presented to us — John as the herald of the Being who was to come in Jesus. John proclaimed this by gathering together and summarizing with infinite power everything contained in the old Law. What the Baptist wished to bring home to men was that there must be observance of what was written in the old Law but had grown old in civilization and had been forgotten; it was mature, but was no longer heeded. Therefore what John required above all was the power possessed by a soul born as a mature — even overmature — soul into the world. He was born of old parents; from the very beginning his astral body was pure and cleansed of all the forces which degrade man, because the aged parents were unaffected by passion and desire. There again, profound wisdom is expressed in the Gospel of St. Luke. For such an Individuality, too, provision is made in the Mother-Lodge of humanity. Where the great Manu guides and directs the processes of evolution in the spiritual realm, from thence the streams are sent whithersoever they are needed. An Ego such as that of John the Baptist was born into a body under the immediate guidance and direction of the great Mother-Lodge of humanity in the central sanctuary of earthly spiritual life. The John-Ego descended from the same holy region (Stätte) as that from which the soul-being of the Jesus-child of the Gospel of St. Luke descended, save that upon Jesus there were chiefly bestowed qualities not yet permeated by an Ego in which egoistic traits had developed: that is to say, a young soul was guided to the place where the reborn Adam was to incarnate.” GA 114, lecture 5.
And he was finally able to reveal more in his ‘Last Address’
and i will talk about this today in the online festival
xox
Oh God. Yes, Hazel, I was just doing an ‘egregore’ on this. It has been on my mind for months. I hope you catch and convey it. The question has always been for me: “How is it that Lazarus flows through the Individuality of Elijah, John, Raphael, Novalis”?
it is clear that when John the Baptizer was beheaded in sacrifice he became like a guardian angel to all the apostles, especially Lazarus who after his Initiation took on the title Johannes as well, for John the Bpatist worked with him from the spiritual world while he was in the tomb & ever after they share attributes…
Yes. The beheading of John caused the whole stream of Elijah-John to work from the outside in support of achieving what Christ wanted. It became the Folk Soul of the 12 in teaching the subtle details of Christ’s work while they slept. Steiner’s course on the Gospel of Mark, GA 139, has many references to this stream of Elijah-John, and worth reviewing:
https://wn.rsarchive.org/Lectures/GA139/English/AP1986/search=mode?query=elijah-john&mode=context
Then something of profound significance happened. Lazarus was raised from the dead, and John returned to earth again. He would become “The Disciple Whom Jesus Loved”, because he is cousin John. As such, John was immensely important in accompanying and aiding Peter in the first ten chapters of Acts of the Apostles. Remember Peter asking Christ in the last chapter of the Gospel of John, “What about this one”? Well, Peter found out how helpful he would be. This is John, who would go on to write the Revelation in old age. The Mother had joined his household at the Mystery of Golgotha. She had access to the imagery of old Ephesus.
Something to ponder – was John’s beheading an instant form of karma for his doubt, expressed in the question posed to Jesus, whether or not He was the One? If so, it’s a warning to all of us of the responsibility of great souls like John – “It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the Living God.” (Hebrews 10:31). Somehow I don’t think James and John were thinking there’d be responsibilities when they asked to sit on Jesus’ right and left hands.
Your last paragraph, about John returning as the “beloved disciple” – is that your thought, or from Steiner? If John did help Peter, couldn’t he have done it in the way that Peter later helped John, in guiding him through the Revelation? As an angel, or in some etheric form, rather than as John the disciple, as your post suggests.
I don’t think the beheading was about his doubt; Herod & his wife & daughter were working black magic.
To me it could be a symbol of wanting to cut off thinking, or if you want to look at karma, perhaps it is connected to his life as Adam & the fall…?
That was not my statement, I do not agree with those thoughts which are not Steiner’s indications it came from our friend Steve.
The beloved disciple was Lazarus who became John the Evangelist, was inspired into by John the Baptist working from across the threshold, JB’s spirit helped him access the & write the the John Gospel & the Book of Revelation. It is also important to consider that Mother Mary, & the Sophia working thru her, also inspired him in this writing.
And yes, JB also inspired the other apostles, he became a kind of group guardian for them all. And JB is the precursor to how we must work in community with those across the threshold.
Dear Hazel, Thank you for the eurythmy gestures for Johannes – so full of meaning and so on point for St. John’s Day.

Patricia, if you know how to “click and drag” with your mouse, before you open the email, left click on it, move it to Primary. Then they’ll ask if you want this done for all future emails from RR. It may take another email or two from RR before the change is made. Just keep doing the same.
You never know, Hazel, how what you write will help others. Today’s look at “E-O-Ah” helped me to understand the chant I use prior to meditation, which is “Rrr-E-O-Ah-Um”. I’m told that this chant is used to tune up the chakras, but always wondered why there’s only 5 sounds. Then it dawned on me, that the first chakra requires silence ( I won’t go into why), and the seventh chakra, the crown chakra, also requires silence, in the same manner as the Jews won’t say aloud the Name of God.
This all had me looking into Steiner’s lecture called “Speech and Sounds”, as I wanted to learn more about the vowels and consonants. So thank you for the inspiration – this will help me immensely. Cheers. xox
