Positive Listening

Here is the spoken word on the ‘I Think Speech‘ Podcast

For our Lucky 13th Day of Lenten-Tide – ’ I am Marching in like a lion with a wee fairy tale that celebrates the power of Positivity & the blessings of the music of Spring.

Once upon a time a 100 years ago, or was it yesterday…A joyous thoughtful Queen married a kind & loving King from a distant land. During the wedding feast, he was poisoned by 3 evil Dukes who wanted to control the kingdom. They set up rumors that it was the Queen herself that had murdered the King. The Queen became very sad & nothing could cheer her up. What once was a joy became a burden. The constant undermining of the evil Dukes created enmity & doubt within the court & the Queen who was once revered became suspect. Having no way of defending herself the Queen became stormy & very negative indeed. She soon fell ill & no one in all the court knew the true cause of her sickness or how to bring about a cure. The Queen still worked hard to make the Kingdom great, but because her efforts were received with suspicion, now she never smiled & went about fought & weary.

“The Queen needs daintier food,” thought the Court Cook, so he served broiled peacock eggs on toast, & pomegranates with cream, & wild honey, O & the  cheese-cakes as light as feathers, but the Queen just became fat & even more grouchy & negative.

“The Queen needs medicine,” declared the Court Physician, so he searched the countryside for growing things & he brewed rose-leaf tea, & he made a potion of basil flowers mixed with rosemary, that he distilled with dew gathered at sunrise, & wild honeysuckle from the fields by the sea. But the Queen only wanted coffee, & would have none of it.

“Perhaps music will divert the Queen,” suggested the Court Jester. “It might make her forget her woes.”

The Court Herald hastened thru the streets, calling as loudly as he could: “Music for the Queen! Music for the Queen! Riches & honor for whoever can play a healing tune – one that will make her majesty forgo her sorrow.”

Immediately the palace was filled with music, some of it quite beautiful & some played by the very famous of the famous in all the land. But it was deemed either too loud or too soft, too high or too low by the Queen. A sweet singer came with his lute & regaled the Queen. But at the end the Queen was still weak & sorrowful. A harpist from a far country came & played music that sounded like the mighty wind on high mountain tops & the rushing flow of great valley streams. But the Queen slightly moved was still only able to thank the harpist & request that he be paid for his pains & bid him journey back to his home. Later, there came a trumpeter who gave great battle calls on his horn, but the Queen covered her ears to shut out the sound & looked even sadder than ever because the sound only gave her a headache.

So it seemed as if not even music would make the Queen well, & since no one suspected what the 3 evil Dukes were about, no one knew what to do & so pallor of gloom hung about the kingdom. The Queen spoke her mind at the palace meetings, & what she said was true, & certainly for the good of all, but her pain-tinged tone came across as harsh & no one wanted to listen. The evil Dukes played off her pain & kept the rumors going to keep her off balance.

Meanwhile, way down in the valley, there lived a little boy called Gladheart who tended sheep. He was the youngest of five brothers, & there was little room & less food for them in their mother’s house. But Gladheart had been given his name because he was always full of love & smiled over even a crust of bread, ever since he was a baby. Now that he was a strapping lad of ten with a great flock of ewes & lambs to tend & drive through sun & storm, he had even more smiles & kind words for all; & he played his fiddle all the day long, filling the valley with his sweet songs. When he heard of the Queens sorrow, Gladheart said: “I must go & play before her majesty.”

“They will only laugh at your old fiddle,” said his brothers, but the eldest agreed to tend the sheep for a day, & Gladheart set out for the palace.

“The Dukes will have naught to do with a shepherd lad dressed in goatskin & bearing an old fiddle,” the guards at the door said. But Gladheart touched the strings with the bow & such a blithe tune came forth that the guards opened the door wide, & Gladheart went inside.

At first the sight of the Queen sitting so bent & sorrowful on the throne with a face as frowning & sad as a storm frightened Gladheart. But he took courage & stood as straight as he could in front of the Queen, & began to play on the fiddle a tune that he had learned while working in the fields with his sheep.

It was a lovable tune, like a dozen twittering birds & a little wandering wind & the voice of a rippling brook all joined with the sounds of the little Sun singers, the bees, the katydids, & the crickets. As the Queen listened, her bent shoulders straightened & her face became bright with life. She reached out her hands to Gladheart. “I’ve heard that tune before, when I was a young lass & all I knew was love ,” – It makes me well to hear it now. What is it about, lad?”

“It is about the Spring-time, your majesty,” said Gladheart. “It is the song that I learned from the fields when winter is finally over. And if your majesty will come with me to my sheep pasture, you may hear it there every day.”

No one could understand why the Queen was suddenly so positive & full of life, or why she went often to sit with Gladheart & the sheep, but they were all very happy over it. All except the 3 evil Dukes, who continued to plot, even though they were obliged to give Gladheart the riches & the honor that had been promised to whoever could heal the Queen. And because of the healing music the Queen was reminded that Love was all that mattered, & from then on she could find nothing else but beauty & good in the world.

Social Studies

Heart love art abstract drawing free image

This quote from Rudolf Steiner is my contemplation for the 12th day of Lenten-Tide: “What anthroposophical knowledge enkindles in us with its pursuit of the supersensible is love of humanity. It teaches us how precious a human being is and imbues us with a feeling for human dignity…spiritual science stimulates the will to a capacity for what I have described in my Philosophy of Freedom as moral intuition….Anthroposophy is in a position to show how this love of duty goes on growing into love of humanity and thus becomes the real quickener of social life. We can gain insight into the huge, burning social problem that confronts us today only if we take the trouble to realize the connection between freedom, love, man’s being, spiritual and natural necessity.”

MARCH in like a lion…Out like a lamb – The sun rise was particularly clear & layered with colors this blustery morning – the winds blowing the wispy clouds away to reveal hot pink & orange & a crazy yellow.

March is abundant with ‘Holy Days’, finding voice through many cultural expressions.

Nowruz Novruz Persian New Year'S - Free photo on Pixabay

The 13th is the New Moon, as well as our time to ‘Spring Forward’ for the dubious ‘Daylight Savings Time’. It also happens to be the Iranian New Year celebration, Norooz, or ‘New Day’.

In 622 AD, Mohammed led his followers from Mecca to Medina to escape assassination. According to the story, when his pursuers reached the cave where Mohammed & his followers had taken shelter for the night, they found a dove nesting in front of it & the entrance covered by a spider’s web. So the pursuers passed on, leaving them in peace. Mohammed continued on to Medina, where he & his followers were able to worship freely. Muslims consider this flight — or Hijrah — to be the beginning of their calendar year. People worship quietly on this day, which begins with the 1st sighting of the crescent moon, & in keeping with the rebirth of nature is also considered the 1st day of Spring.

14 March is Marie Steiner von Sivers Birthday

Assassination of Julius Caesar Drawing by English School

The 15th is the famous Ides of March; which we all know is the day Julius Caesar was warned by the soothsayers to beware; the day he was assassinated. But did you know that according to the ancient Roman calendar, the Ides of March was considered New Year’s Day, & marked the 1st day of Spring?

March 17, brings us the ‘wearing of the green’ for St. Patrick’s Day. This former pagan used the shamrock to teach folks about the Trinity.

We celebrate Spring  or Vernal Equinox, on 20 March this year, also known as: Alban Eilir, Eostar, the Feast of Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Lady Day, Festival of Trees, NawRuz, Ostara, & the Rites of Spring – when the Sun, because of the ‘precession of the equinoxes’, enters the sign of Pisces, as opposed to the lunar cycle used by the ancients.

Day & night are equal, poised & balanced, but about to tip over to the side of light. It is sacred to the twilight time of dawn, youth, the morning star & the East. The Saxon goddess, Eostre (from whose name we get the direction East & the name of the Holiday Easter) is a dawn goddess, like Aurora & Eos. Just as the dawn is the time of new light, so the Vernal Equinox is the time of new life.

The Equinox is all about harmony & balance – that brief yet eternal time of equilibrium, when day & night are of equal length.

Two other holidays also get mixed up in this ancient symbolism of Spring’s fertility. March 25th is called the ‘Annunciation of Mary.’ – the day that the Angel Gabriel announced that Mary, the Christian version of The Sophia, was pregnant with the son of god ; who is born 9 months later, on Dec. 25th. How’s that for a nice little spring fertility symbol.

Passover begins at Sundown on 27 March, the eve of the Full Vernal Moon.

The 28th begins Holy Week with Palm Sunday – look for details below about joining us in marking this time.

Rudolf Steiner’s Deathday comes on Holy Tuesday, 30 March this year. (Stay tuned for details on a Zoom gathering on this day)

It is also fitting that March is International Women’s month, since this is the time of the rebirth of nature. It’s a gentle reminder that we give birth to the future. The future is in our hands, the hands of the midwife, the lap of the mother, & the hands of the Peacemaker.

So let’s honor ourselves & thank the powers of love & light, knowing, March may come in like a lion, but it goes out like a lamb – As we re-conceive of ourselves in alignment with the powers of Spring…

Peace & Blessed Bee…

Someone asked what I could possibly mean by the title of my Yip 13 Initiative Forum presentation ‘Weaving a non-gendered Feminist Reality’ – Here are my thoughts: In bringing the Being of Anthroposophia to these young people, I feel it is important to emphasize that the Divine Feminine is in all human beings no matter what sex they present on earth. I know young people think about these things & I am hoping to bring an awareness that The Being of Anthroposophia, like all spiritual beings are universal. And once we get going, what will emerge is the fact that what we are tuning into are attributes of the universal human being – The Wisdom of the Human Being which is non-gendered – But Yes, it’s important to put an emphasis on the Divine Feminine qualities because they are often overlooked or degraded. We must unveil & re-member them to achieve wholeness -to truly become Anthroposophia -To focus especially on those qualities that have been forgotten or coopted -So that we have the full spectrum of colors, & qualities to manifest our highest human destiny. We must strive to bring the Wisdom of the Divine Feminine into our humanness.

Day 11 of Lenten-Tide: Today I am challenging myself to be super rigorous in figuring out my true intentions – & with aligning them with the Will of the Divine. I also want to think a thought I have never thought before – Ask a question I’ve never asked – Do the research to discover why one of my hard held opinions may be wrong.

I will start by changing my password. Perhaps I’ll dream up a new nickname for myself – or add a new twist to my grooming ritual. I hope to surprise myself at least once a day, as I seek to be impeccable in formulating my highest desires, & in being concise in expressing them.

Insight and healing by Matthias Girke

The anthroposophical path of knowledge wants to guide the spiritual in the human being to the spiritual in the universe. But healing also connects man with the essence of the world, the macrocosm. This applies not only to medicines and external applications, but equally to eurythmy therapy and artistic therapies in which speech, music, colour and the material world take effect. In this way the relationship between insight and healing becomes clear: we have to distinguish between the conscious cognitive activity of the human being and the effectiveness of the healing processes taking place under the threshold of consciousness. Like day and night, these human activities face each other, especially since the healing processes take place particularly in sleep, in ancient mysteries in temple sleep.

Insight and healing now stand in an essential connection. Healing is an expression of the regenerative life forces of the human being. Hans Jonas has called it the “principle of life”, the American neurologist Alan Shewmon speaks of the integrative unity of the organism, which regenerates and maintains it. These life forces experience a decisive transformation with the development of consciousness in the wakeful person. While life unfolds primarily in the metabolic limb system, the development of consciousness takes place on the basis of the nerve-sense system. Compared to the large metabolic organs, the nerve organisation does not have any obvious vitality, but on its foundation, consciousness develops. Life forces of our organization are metamorphosed into the forces of thinking. This decisive connection is becoming increasingly topical, for example, for child development: ” school readiness” marks the threshold at which the child is capable through sufficient transformation of these forces to be able to summon up the appropriate attention and concentration. Now, for example, in the large study begun by Lewis Terman and carried out over several decades, and thus by several generations of researchers, a connection between the age of school enrolment and longevity has become apparent: too early enrolment in school and thus the development of intellectual awareness is accompanied by a shortening of longevity. The relationship of consciousness to the principle of life thus constitutes a current research task that is relevant to almost all fields of life in Anthroposophy.

The Calendar of the Soul by Rudolf Steiner, translated by Roy Sadler (with added titles)
It’s Rudolf Steiner’s birthday verse this week. Sunday 25.3.1861 was the day of the Super Full Moon, which is usually in this 3rd Lenten week – though this year
it was yesterday in v47, and a bit further away than in 1861. v48 leads to the Passiontide moon cycle as a kind of climax verse: the 7th mention of the heart and the 3rd of love, neither appearing again till next winter, the heart at the solstice and love at Epiphany.
LENT III
AWAKENING OF LOVE
v48
In light, whose flowing from the heights
would be the world’s empowering of soul,
let shine the certainty of cosmic thought
that solves soul riddles,
and focusing its rays of power
in human hearts awakens love.

the mirror verse – EASTER V
THE RESURRECTION OF THE SOUL
v5
In light, whose fertile weaving
from depth of spirit is revealing
the splendour of the gods’ creating,
the being of the soul is shining, widening,
enlivened in the presence of the world
and resurrected
from narrow selfhood’s inner power.

Faith-Hope-Love

One Reason Why People Hate Religion

For this 10th day of Lenten-Tide I would like to share a practice that Sue Mohler has taken up. She is working with ‘Faith, Love and Hope’. Sue reached out after reading the post around inviting ourselves to live into the signals from our bodies as clues for healing. Sue ‘learned that Hope and Truth are connected to the Physical body…Faith – Goodness in the Astral body…and Love – Beauty – important in the Etheric body’…She also came across this thought provoking article from the Goetheanum by Matthias Girke which is well worth the read. https://goetheanum.co/en/news/the-healing-effects-of-anthroposophy

Here is a snippet: “…The human being as a microcosm may experience the support of the healing powers through the macrocosm. In it lay the assistance which the sick person needs for his or her healing and which stimulate and promote self-regulation. Many medicines are derived from nature. We know effective remedies from the plant and animal world, the world of minerals and metals. As a result, not only a medical practice is developing which seeks the rational connection to nature and which in its healing turns to the forces of the macrocosm, but also an ecologically oriented pharmacy and art of healing

The problem of the pollution of nature and groundwater due to the increasing use of chemical medicines (cytostatics, hormone preparations, antibiotics, etc.) is becoming obvious. We also need an ecological reorientation in medicine, as we have long been calling for in other areas, such as agriculture, for example…” ~Matthias Girke

Sun and Moon Painting image 0
Lily Gothee

27 February 2021 – “Speaking with the Stars”: Because the Moon is opposite the Sun at Full Moon, she mimics the path of the Sun – predicting where the Sun will be in 6 months. This late February Quickening Moon – like the late August Sun – rises north of due East & sets north of due West. In the Northern Hemisphere, the February Full Moon (like the August Sun) follows the high path of the Summer Sun staying out longer than 12 hours; yet, at temperate latitudes in the Southern Hemisphere, the February Full Moon (like the August Sun) follows the low path of the Winter Sun & stays out for less than 12 hours.

Day by day, the Sun is rising & setting farther & farther Northward along the horizon. Day by day, the Southern Hemisphere is slowly losing daylight while the Northern Hemisphere is gaining it. By the time the March Equinox comes on 20 March, 2021, the Sun will pretty much rise due East & set due West in both the Northern & Southern Hemispheres, giving equal day & night around the world. After that, the sun will rise &set north of due East & West, giving the Northern Hemisphere its turn for longer & warmer days.

So friends that’s EarthSky’s long winded way of saying take note of how these celestial beings are moving. We can watch them as they change position on the horizon as a way of marking the season.

Rudolf Steiner’s Lectures on this day

ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

Constantine from BL Royal 19 E VI, f. 202 - PICRYL Public Domain Image

272 – Birthday of Constantine the Great, Roman emperor

File:John Chrysostom, St. Paul the Apostle Orthodox Church, Dayton, Ohio.jpg - Wikimedia Commons

407 – Deathday of St. John Chrysostom, Archbishop of Constantinople, was an important Early Church Father. He is known for his preaching & public speaking, his denunciation of abuse of authority by both ecclesiastical & political leaders, the Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom, & his ascetic sensibilities. The epithet Χρυσόστομος (Chrysostomos, anglicized as Chrysostom) means “golden-mouthed” in Greek & denotes his celebrated eloquence. Chrysostom was among the most prolific authors in the early Christian Church exceeded only by Augustine in the quantity of his surviving writings. John was born in Antioch in 349 to Greco-Syrian parents. His mother Anthusa as a pagan & his father was a high-ranking military officer. John’s father died soon after his birth & he was raised by his mother. As a result of his mother’s influential connections in the city, John began his education under the pagan teacher Libanius. From Libanius, John acquired the skills for a career in rhetoric, as well as a love of the Greek language & literature.

A late medieval legend relates that, when John Chrysostom was a hermit in the desert, he was approached by a royal princess in distress. The Saint, thinking she was a demon, at first refused to help her, but the princess convinced him that she was a Christian & would be devoured by wild beasts if she were not allowed to enter his cave. He therefore admitted her, carefully dividing the cave in two parts, one for each of them. In the morning she had given birth to a child she claimed was his. He then went to Rome to beg absolution, which was refused. Chrysostom made a vow that he would never rise from the ground until his sins were expiated, & for years he lived like a beast, crawling on all fours & feeding on wild grasses & roots. One day the princess reappeared, suckling the saint’s baby, who miraculously pronounced his sins forgiven. This last scene was very popular from the late 15th century onwards as a subject for engravers & artists.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, 1777 | Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, 177… | Flickr

1756 – Birthday of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, in full Johann Chrysostom Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, baptized as Johannes Chrysostomus Wolfgangus Theophilus Mozart. A prolific & influential composer of the Classical era. Born in Salzburg, he showed prodigious ability from his earliest childhood. Already competent on keyboard & violin, he composed from the age of 5 & performed before European royalty. At 17, Mozart was engaged as a musician at the Salzburg court, but grew restless & traveled in search of a better position. While visiting Vienna in 1781, he was dismissed from his Salzburg position. He chose to stay in the capital, where he achieved fame but little financial security.

Mozart’s physical appearance described him as “a remarkably small man, very thin and pale, with a profusion of fine, fair hair of which he was rather vain, except for his large intense eyes, he gave no signs of his genius.” His facial complexion was pitted, a reminder of his childhood case of smallpox. He loved elegant clothing. Of his voice his wife later wrote that it “was a tenor, rather soft in speaking and delicate in singing, but when anything excited him, or it became necessary to exert it, it was both powerful and energetic”.

Mozart usually worked long & hard, finishing compositions at a tremendous pace as deadlines approached. He often made sketches & drafts; unlike Beethoven’s these are mostly not preserved, as his wife sought to destroy them after his death.

Mozart lived at the center of the Viennese musical world, & knew a great number & variety of people: fellow musicians, theatrical performers, fellow Salzburgers, & aristocrats, including some acquaintance with the Emperor Joseph II. He enjoyed billiards & dancing, & kept pets: a canary, a starling, a dog, & a horse for recreational riding. He had a startling fondness for scatological humor, which is preserved in his surviving letters, notably those written to his cousin Maria Anna Thekla Mozart around 1777–1778, & in his correspondence with his sister & parents. Mozart also wrote scatological music, a series of canons that he sang with his friends.

During his final years in Vienna, he composed many of his best-known symphonies, concertos, & operas, & portions of the Requiem, which was largely unfinished at the time of his death. The circumstances of his early death have been much mythologized. He was survived by his wife Constanze & two sons. He composed more than 600 works, many acknowledged as pinnacles of symphonic, concertante, chamber, operatic, & choral music. He is among the most enduringly popular of classical composers, & his influence is profound on subsequent Western art music.

Friedrich von Schelling – Store norske leksikon

1775 – Birthday of Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling, a German philosopher. Standard histories of philosophy make him the midpoint in the development of German idealism, situating him between Johann Gottlieb Fichte, his mentor in his early years, & Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, his former university roommate, early friend, & later rival. Some later philosophers such as Martin Heidegger & Slavoj Žižek have shown interest in re-examining Schelling’s body of work. Quotes:

“Nature is visible Spirit; Spirit is invisible Nature.” (Ideen, “Introduction”)

“History as a whole is a progressive, gradually self-disclosing revelation of the Absolute.” (System of Transcendental Idealism, 1800)

“Has creation a final goal? And if so, why was it not reached at once? Why was the consummation not realized from the beginning? To these questions there is but one answer: Because God is Life, and not merely Being.” (Philosophical Inquiries into the Nature of Human Freedom, 1809)

“Only he who has tasted freedom can feel the desire to make over everything in its image, to spread it throughout the whole universe.” (Philosophical Inquiries into the Nature of Human Freedom, 1809)

“As there is nothing before or outside of God he must contain within himself the ground of his existence. All philosophies say this, but they speak of this ground as a mere concept without making it something real and actual.” (Philosophical Inquiries into the Nature of Human Freedom, 1809)

“God then has no beginning only insofar as there is no beginning of his beginning. The beginning in God is eternal beginning, that is, such a one as was beginning from all eternity, and still is, and also never ceases to be beginning.” (Quoted in Hartshorne & Reese, Philosophers Speak of God, Chicago: U of Chicago P, 1953, p. 237.)

A Scientist's Mind, a Poet's Soul — The New Atlantis

1807 – Birthday of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

File:Rudolf Steiner. .jpg - Wikimedia Commons

1861 – The emergency Baptism of Rudolf Steiner

Happy 200th, Giuseppe Verdi | Chicago Public Library

1901 – Deathday of Giuseppe Fortunino Francesco Verdi an Italian opera composer. Verdi was born near Busseto to a provincial family of moderate means, & developed a musical education with the help of a local patron. Verdi came to dominate the Italian opera . In his early operas Verdi demonstrated a sympathy with the Risorgimento movement which sought the unification of Italy. He also participated briefly as an elected politician. An intensely private person, Verdi however did not seek to ingratiate himself with popular movements & as he became professionally successful was able to reduce his operatic workload & sought to establish himself as a landowner in his native region. He surprised the musical world by returning, after his success with the opera Aida (1871), with three late masterpieces: his Requiem (1874), & the operas Otello (1887) &Falstaff (1893). His operas remain extremely popular, especially the three peaks of his ‘middle period’: Rigoletto, Il trovatore & La traviata.

1922 – A challenge to the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution, allowing women the right to vote, is rebuffed by the Supreme Court

1939 – United States labor law: The U.S. Supreme Court rules that sit-down strikes violate property owners’ rights & are therefore illegal

2004 – The initial version of the John Jay Report, with details about the Catholic sexual abuse scandal in the United States, is released. The report determined that, during the period from 1950 to 2002, a total of 10,667 individuals had made allegations of child sexual abuse. Of these, the dioceses had been able to identify 6,700 unique accusations against 4,392 clergy over that period in the USA, which is about 4% of all 109,694 ordained clergy i.e. priests or deacons or members of religious orders, active in the USA during the time covered by the study. Roughly 4% of them were accused. However, of these 4392 accused, only 252 (5.7% of those accused or less than 0.1% of total clergy) were convicted. The number of alleged abuses increased in the 1960s, peaked in the 1970s, declined in the 1980s, & by the 1990s had returned to the levels of the 1950s. In summary, over a 50-year period, out of more than 100,000 priests deacons & religious order clergy, 4,392 (~4.4%) were accused of sexual abuse, 252 (<0.26%) were convicted & 100 (<0.1%) sentenced to prison

Day 10 on the Lenten-tide journey – Some people may think that observing Lent is all about renunciation; but I see it more as a passage to receptivity.  This is not a passive state of being. It is not a submissive waiting around; but an openness – a wiliness to cultivate a space for introspection.

Fathers of the Church | UNBORN WORD of the day

Receptivity is a robust readiness, a vigorous intention to attend to the moral relationship we have with ourselves & the world; animated by the certainty that the way to the New Sun of Easter takes a humble reckoning reaching. And so let us reach out & receive what the tide has to teach us.

Black Board Drawing made by Rudolf Steiner October 1921

In honor of this years 3 day celebration of Rudolf Steiner’s 160th Birthday, I am thrilled to share this impressive article from Kathleen Wright, which she shared on the North Carolina Rudolf Steiner Branch list-serve yesterday. As part of their yearly AGM held on Steiner’s Birthday, Kathleen usually gives a talk: ‘In the life of Rudolf Steiner – 100 years ago“. Since they did not gather in person this year she wrote it up, & has graciously allowed me to share it with all of you.

THE YEAR 1921 IN THE LIFE OF RUDOLF STEINER

Today marks the 160th birthday of our great teacher, Rudolf Steiner. As our branch has traditionally done on this day, we will review a year in the life of Steiner, 100 years ago.  According to Steiner, every 100 years marks a “culmination” of endeavors or events and new impulses or “recapitulations” should arise from them at this time; therefore,  from what we observe  of Steiner’s activities of 1921, we should be on the lookout for new forms and new interests in the topics of 1921 in the coming year.

Some of the interesting things about 1921: with the war finally over, Steiner was once more able to travel (his traveling was severely curtailed during the war years.) and travel he did – all over Europe, including England. (How we pray we will be able to do the same later on this year!) The work in the College he founded in the previous year continued full steam. The theme of this year’s study was” all of the Sciences”, beginning with a course in Astronomy in early January. (For a full list of all the lectures of the year visit: www.rsaarchive.org and type in 1921 in the link for “Year”.)

About 600 students participated in the College program at the Goetheanum. They were given morning lectures with Dr. Steiner and artistic classes in the afternoon with various artists. This was far from all that our Teacher did – there were lectures for the community in the evenings, innumerable correspondences, helping with all aspects of the work going on in the Goetheanum (especially the sculpture “The Representative of Humanity”), giving weekly talks to the workers – and I was interested to find out that these workers were mostly NOT anthroposophists. They were poor, desperate human beings looking for work after the war had left them destitute. While they may not have joined the Society, many of them spoke in Rudolf Steiner’s defense during the many attacks made on him that year. They dearly loved their employer for many reasons.

Guenther Wachsmuth writes that “the Spiritual Powers do honor to the greatest and strongest of human beings through the most severe tests. And the burdens which were laid upon Rudolf Steiner by the forces of destiny at just this time in his life are indications of the fact that he was chosen to accomplish an extraordinary task.” He says that Steiner had to confront “the severest battles, unspeakable suffering and opposition”. These battles took the form of articles, publications, letters and even in-person attacks at lectures, all full of malice and hatred,  lies, slander, false accusations and misunderstandings of this great man and his message. He was accused of everything from being a “traitor”, “enemy of the State”, “Jesuit”, anti-Jesuit” and every possible insult one can imagine. While Wachsmuth tells of many of these attacks on Steiner from 1921, they pale in comparison to the attacks of 1922, about which we shall go into detail next year  – such  the attack on Steiner’s life by the Nazis and the burning of the Goetheanum after the incitement by a Jesuit priest.

The influence of the “Youth” in the movement began increasing and prompting new initiatives from their Teacher. A group of young seminarians came to Steiner rightly saying they felt organized religion was losing its affect and that it was in need of renewal or else it would die. The doctor responded by giving two courses for seminarians and anyone interested in the Movement for Religious Renewal (one in the summer and one at Michaelmas). About 100 people attended the Michaelmas course during which Steiner gave 29 talks. German students were allowed free admission because of how badly devastated the Germany economy was at the end of the war.  Noticeably absent from the conference was Friedrich Rittlemeyer who had been a close follower of Steiner since 1911. He was ill at the time, but later read the reports about Steiner’s course on religious renewal and together, they and others, began plans for what became the Christian Community the following year. One interesting observation I have noted: in 1921, virtually all of the religious youth who approached Steiner were male. Today in the Christian Community Seminary course in Canada, there are 8 female students, no males. Back in 1921, Steiner had recommended that women be permitted to be priests in this new Movement. How far we have come! What would there be today if Steiner had not made this recommendation?

Another interesting event concerning youth is that a group of young members approached Steiner wanting to create something new for their own circle, a small esoteric group. (They did not like the traditional Study Groups of the ”old ladies” and there was no esoteric class at the time.) Steiner gave them indications to follow:  a series of mantras which  they  must work with  the same time each day and that they must remain close friends, aware of what was going on in one another’s lives. They must observe these rules very strictly. If they followed these guidelines, they would reincarnate together at the same time and place and find each other once more and would be able to resume their spiritual connection. At first Steiner agreed that he would meet with this group regularly to guide their spiritual work, but soon this became too much for him, especially after the burning of the Goetheanum and he advised them to all join the School of Spiritual Science in 1923. Though small, through the work of this group we have been given some important esoteric secrets on how we can work together to form Karmic circles. One sees a similar “culmination” renewal of this practice of late in the Society. One example is the group which was begun in Chicago where members work with the Six Exercises every day at Noon (EST) There have been other instances where it has been acknowledged of the great power produced by small groups of people who work together spiritually at the same time of day every day,

Also during 1921, Steiner continued giving courses for Waldorf Teachers and Anthroposophical Doctors. During this year, Ita Wegman established the Medical Clinic at Arlesheim where Steiner visited often and gave spiritual insights into the patients there. A medical research laboratory was begun that among other things, developed medicines. Eventually this became known as Weleda, but its start was in 1921. This is where Iscador was developed by Ita Wegman.  Steiner gave these doctors many indications for developing new remedies. In April 1921  Steiner gave the first course on Curative Eurythmy.

Another laboratory, a scientific one was established also in Dornach and was directed by Eherenfried Pfeiffer. It was first in the basement of the “Glass House” and did many experiments with etheric forces.

A few new anthroposophic journals began in 1921: “Das Goetheanum” a weekly magazine, which Steiner put under the direction of Albert Steffen and “Die Drei”, a Munich monthly journal, for which Steiner wrote articles every month. Both magazines are still published today.

In addition to the huge volume of scientific lectures Steiner gave in 1921, he also spoke many times on the Threefold Social Order, as well as the differences in the West and the East as far as Religion and Historical conflicts go; he gave courses on Eurythmy, and of course there were many performances all around Europe, as well as Mystery Plays. He gave several lectures about Color – Plant Colors, as well as Therapeutic Application of Color. A great Artistic Conference was held in August of that year at the Goetheanum during which the Danish painter Baron Arild Rosenkrantz was the guest artist (as well as the one who suggested the idea to Steiner). It was conducted in English and there was a wonderful collaboration of American artists and European artists and persons interested in Art. This began a traditional at the Goetheanum of having  artistic programs in August at the Geotheanum, eventually offered always in multiple languages.

At the request of many of his followers, Dr. Steiner gave several lectures on the Art of Lecturing during 1921. Among the most important points he gave were: one should truly love one’s subject; have a great love of humanity and incorporate the elements of beauty, correctness and ethics into one’s speaking. He recommended that one memorize the first two or three sentences of one’s opening and closing remarks, as it is the most difficult to begin and end one’s talk, so one should develop really good openers and closers; the rest of the content, one should know well enough that one does not need to write it all out, but rather to simply jot down some key words to refresh one’s memory.

There are so many details one could add, but these are hopefully the most important endeavors of Steiner 100 years ago. As in every year since his 42nd  birthday, Steiner did more in one year of his life than most people do in 10 lifetimes. He was the most amazing  and unique Initiate of all time. One could compare what he was to other Initiates as the Human Being is to the rest of the Angelic Kingdom: We humans are the first angelic hierarchy (though of course we are still  “in training”), to have a material existence and Steiner is the first Initiate to bring the Spiritual into every arena of material life – arts, sciences, history, politics, medicine, speech, drama, religion, education to name a few…and he did it while maintaining his humanity and humility. The vastness and scope of his achievements  are unprecedented. Some people have accused Steiner of being an “intellectual”, but one only has a right to say such a thing if they add that he is also equally strong in his heart and will capacities. We are truly blessed to be the pupils of this great Christ Initiate. All spiritual streams of the North, South, East and West are untied under him in this Age of the Consciousness Soul.

Take time to think on the great contributions of our Teacher and how we can honor him by following his example in little ways. One could start by reading one of the books based on lectures he gave in that year, for study is the first step on the path of Initiation. Next of course is our meditative life (which will develop in us Imagination, Inspiration and Intuition) and lastly to put into practice in our daily lives the principles of Anthroposophy. ~Kathleen Wright kathleenwright51@gmail.com
