a human generation

Dear friends – As I am preparing for our Easter Festival, opening to the mysteries of Mary Magdalene, which starting coming thru over the Holy Nights, I came across this highly evocative quote from Rudolf Steiner that awakens us to the cycles we are immersed in – so powerfully rendered in the Foundation Stone Meditation as: For the Christ-will encircling us holds sway, In world rhythms, bestowing Grace upon souls – giving us much food for thought as we move thru the Cycle of the Year as a Path of Initiation…

I hope it stimulates you as it has me:

“…The time interval between Christmas and Easter is to be understood as consisting of thirty-three years. This is the key. What does this mean? That the Christmas festival celebrated this year (2023) belongs to the Easter festival that follows thirty-three years later (2056), while the Easter festival we celebrate this year belongs to the Christmas of (1990). In (1990) humanity celebrated a Christmas festival that really belongs to the Easter of this year (2023), and the Christmas festival we celebrate this year belongs, not to the Easter of next spring but to the one thirty-three years hence (2056). According to our reckoning, this period — thirty-three years — is the period of a human generation, thus a complete generation of humanity must elapse between Christmas festivals and the Easter festivals that are connected with them. This is the key, my dear friends, for reading the new astrology, in which attention is directed to the stars that shine within the historical evolution of humanity itself.

How can this be fulfilled? It can be fulfilled by human beings using the Christmas festival in order to realize that events happening at approximately the present time (we can only say approximately in such matters) refer back in their historical connections in such a way that we are able to perceive their birthdays or beginnings in the events of thirty-three years ago, and that events of today also provide a birthday or beginning for events that will ripen to fruition in the course of the next thirty-three years.

All things in historic evolution arise transfigured after thirty-three years, as from a grave, by virtue of a power connected with the holiest of all redemptions: the Mystery of Golgotha.

It does not suffice, however, to sentimentalize about the Mystery of Golgotha. An understanding of the Mystery of Golgotha demands the highest powers of wisdom of which the human being is capable. It must be experienced by the deepest forces that can stir the soul of man. When he searches its depths for the light kindled by wisdom, when the human being does not merely speak of love but is enflamed by it through the union of the soul with the cosmic soul that streams and pulses through this turning point of time, only then does he acquire insight and understanding into the mysteries of existence. In days of old the wise men who sought for guidance in the conduct of affairs of human beings asked knowledge of the stars, and the stars gave an answer; so, today, those who wish to act wisely in guiding the social life of humanity must give heed to the stars that rise and set in the course of historic evolution. Just as we calculate the cyclic rotations of celestial bodies, so must we learn to calculate the cyclic rotations of historic events by means of a true science of history. The time-cycles of history can be measured by the interval that extends from Christmas to the Easter thirty-three years ahead, and the spirits of these time-cycles regulate that element in which the human soul lives and weaves in so far as it is not a mere personal being but is part of the warp and woof of historic evolution…

Christ spoke to humanity in these words, “Lo! I am with you always even to the end of the world...”

Just as Christ Jesus passed through death in such a way as to make death an illusion and resurrection the reality — this is the content of the Easter mystery — so did Christ Jesus pass through birth in such a way as to render birth an illusion and “transformation of being” within the spiritual world the reality, for in the spiritual world there is neither birth nor death, only changes of condition, only metamorphoses. Not until humanity is prepared to look up to that world in which birth and death both lose their physical meaning will the Christmas and Easter festivals regain their true import and sanctity…”  ~Rudolf Steiner, Et Incarnatus Est: The Time Cycle of Historic Events, 23 December 1917, Basel, GA 180

And so dear friends – What is coming to birth from 1990 at Easter-Tide this year? And what are we implanting that will come to light for the Holy Nights of 2056?

Rudolf Steiner’s Lectures on this day

ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

1828 – Birthday of Fercher von Steinwand, an Austrian poet. Here is what Rudolf Steiner had to say about him in THE RIDDLE OF MAN, GA 20, Pictures from the Thought-Life of Austria

“I learned to know him at the end of the 1880’s in Vienna and for a short time associated with him personally. He was sixty years old at the time: a true figure of light, even externally; an engaging warmth shone from his noble features, eloquent eyes, and expressive gestures; through tranquil clarity and self-possession, this soul of an older man still gave the effect of youthful freshness. And when one came to know this soul better, its particular nature and creations, one could see how a feeling life instilled by the Carinthian Mountains united in this soul with a contemplative life in the power of the idealism in German world views. This contemplation (Sinnen) was already entirely native to his soul as a poetic world of pictures; this contemplation pointed with this world of pictures into the depths of existence; it confronted world riddles artistically, without the originality of artistic creation paling thereby into thought-poetry; one can observe this kind of contemplation in the following lines from Fercher von Steinwand’s Chorus of Primal Dreams:

Out of all regions
Ever ascended,
Wanders an ether in far-radiant arches;
Travel the billows to
Depths ever silent.
There with our all-seeing
Will as their cargo,
Wending their way through the fog go our ferries;
Sail between wonderful
Banks new arising.
There before all-warming
Eyes of soft mildness
Winding and turning we fashion our patterns
Out all around dreaming
Regions of star-fields.
There to misfortune we
N’er are indebted,
There we constructed our fortresses hovering, And tribulations we
Joyfully shattered.
He who would paint you with
Most holy features,
Highest abode of our contemplative urgings:
Wait for the swiftest
Servants of love!

The following verses seek to portray how the soul, in thinking-waking daydreams, lives in far-away starry worlds and in immediate reality; then the poet continues:

No matter what careful
Powers accomplish,
Only on dreaming’s own wide-spreading pinions
Can what is mighty be
Gained now forever.
Every o’erpowering greatness of action,
All of the angels who guard what was planted
Are given counsel by
Dreams that inspire them.

Fercher von Steinwand then sings further about the penetrating of thinking, spiritualized to the point of dreaming, into the depths of the world, and about the penetrating of that kind of dreaming which is an awakening out of our ordinary waking state into those depths where the life of what is spiritual in the world can make itself tangible to the soul:

Life that our pulsating
Hearts have perceived,
Life that our struggling hearts have ascended
To all the welcoming
Cries of the spirits:

And then Fercher von Steinwand lets sound forth to the human spirit what the beings of the spirit realm speak to the soul that opens itself to them in inner contemplation:

Healed ones, now be here by
Loving encircled!
What you were seeking in uplifting hours,
Here, you selected ones,
Is it disclosed;
Here in the grandeur of
Halls of the Godhead,
Where to the heart other hearts are so pleasing,
Where buried voices are
Sounding forth newly
Where now the care-worn are
Royally striving,
Radiant souls now in smiles are all wreathed,
Round all the wrecks of the
Wheels of the ages —
Only the blinded ones,
Earth-bound and foolish,
Were for the gulf of destruction begotten,
Lost to the worlds of
Spirit perfection!
Weal to the sens’tive one
Round whom we hover,
Whom we enliven to bloss’ming existence,
All without weaving in
Fugitive shadows!

In the literary works of Fercher von Steinwand there then follows upon this Chorus of Primal Dreams his Chorus of Primal Impulses:

In the distances unbounded
Of our ancient mother Night.
Hark — to be in inward conflict
Seems the deep mysterious might!
Do we hear present’ment striding?
Is our longing wide awake?
Was a spirit-lightning lit?
Are our dreams through spaces gliding?
How now are powers by powers enraptured,
Blessed exchanges!
Now sudden hastenings.
Then quiet lingerings,
Reveling listenings
Change into beckonings
Marveling fearings!
Charm of desiring
Mounts, and sinks down,
Sinks into hatred.
Faced with the pallid
Picture of embracing
Cannot clasp hatred.
Ramifications dim,
Inclinings burgeoning,
Send forth their tendrils.
Ponderous inklings
Dawn and go faltering
O’er the wide spaces,
Seem to give counsel
Or to give guidance.
What they’re preparing
Is it the sowing
Of immense actions,
Of radiant ages?
Who felt the furrows
To be creative!
Who wandered through them
Blissfully savoring,
Or disentangling,
Grandeurs discovering!
Yonder the stir is like spirits embracing
We are enwarmed
And are receiving,
Seeking, and thinking,
See ourselves lifted,
Woven in joy with
Highest beginnings.
You wafting ‘round us,
In us arising:
“You are ideas! —”

May duration grow accustomed
To what urge has conjured up;
May adorning and appeasement
In creation’s stream prevail.
Sweetest light! in noble ringing
Mounts my heart aloft to you:
Linger at your western gate;
Help to crown the deed of love!
Risen from all earthly bonds is our impulse Soul — resurrected!
But what is ripened
Ruling, and valid
Proves to be spirit!
All that is circling,
All earth foundations,
All heavenly kindlings are
Self-made in spirit,
Came forth from spirit,
Work through the spirit
Powerful freedom from chaos did fashion
Space for good fortune!
Cloaked, with the dew of its deep-breathing mildness, Forest and field!
Cared that the dew and the light be companions,
Forming the hem of deep transfiguration —
Cared that each droplet should float at the threshold
of Spiritual radiance!

In Ferchervon Steinwand’s Complete Works there are also several indications about his life given by the poet himself when pressed by friends on the occasion of his seventieth birthday, He wrote, “I began life on March 22, 1828 upon the heights of the Steinwand above the banks of the Möll in Carinthia (Kärten); that means, in the midst of a defiant congregation of mountains with their heads held high, beneath whose domineering grandeur burdened human beings seem continuously to grow poorer.”

Since, in his Chorus of Primal Impulses, we find the world view of German idealism cast in the form of a poetic creation, it is interesting to see how the poet, on his paths through Austrian spiritual life, receives impulses from this world view already in his youth. He describes how he enters the university in Graz: “With my credentials — which of course consisted only of my report cards — held tight against my chest, I presented myself to the dean. That was Professor Edlauer, a criminologist of high repute. He hoped to see me (he said) industriously present in his lecture course on natural law. Behind the curtain of this innocent title he presented us for the whole semester, in rousing lectures, with those German philosophers who, under the fatherly care of our well-meaning spiritual guardians were banned and kept from us: Fichte, Schelling, Hegel, and so on — heroes, therefore; that means men who founded and fructified all areas of pure thinking, who gave the language and created the concepts for all the other sciences, and who, consequently, are illustrious names shining from our street comers today and seeming almost strange there in their particular diamond clarity. This semester was my vita nuova!”

Whoever learns to know Fercher von Steinwand’s tragedy Dankmar, his Countess Seelenbrand, his German Tones from Austria, and other works of his will be able through this to feel many of the forces that were working in the Austrian spiritual life of the second half of the nineteenth century. And everything about Fercher von Steinwand testifies to the fact that one receives out of his soul a picture from this spiritual life in clarity, truth, and genuineness. The amiable Austrian poet in dialect Leopold Hormann felt rightly when he wrote the words:

Far from all baseness
All avarice and meanness;
Foe of publicity,
That loathesome false lady;
German in soul,
Strong yet with kindness
Great in his thinking,
No faltering and wavering,
Proof against all objections: —
Fercher von Steinwand!

Does one have to be a philosopher of great erudition to approach Aristotle’s gift to humanity……his Categories?

Perhaps , YES! But an initial acquaintance with them can lead out of the confinement of the intellectual concept to an experience of expansion supported by Eurythmy.

In the evening lecture Claudia will introduce the life of the Categories before they became concepts – Bringing the symbols in a sequence of sounds  (called the Evolutionary Sequence ) out of their conceptual form, to life, supported by Eurythmy and examples of poetry.

During the workshop we will enter into the movement of the poetry presented  during the lecture. This will be accessible to Eurythmists as well as to anyone interested in the life of language, poetry and our alphabet.

Claudia Fontana saw a Eurythmy performance when still a teenager. Unbeknownst to her at the time, that performance was the gate to her destiny path. Soon thereafter she studied Eurythmy in Vienna and subsequently spent fourteen years as a performer with the Dornach, London and Stuttgart Eurythmeum ensembles. Teaching became the next challenge which she happily met in the United States, Europe. Before Covid, she spent seven years teaching all levels in Thailand, Malaysia and China. She resides in Ann Arbor, MI still performing and teaching.

When we tune into the Cycle of the Seasons, we experience that as the Earth breathes out in the Springtime, the beings of nature reach upwards towards the heights. The longing of the human soul also strives to meet this mood of ascension, which attunes all life to the cosmic expanses.

Together we will gain insights in how to rise up to our Higher Self by participating in this harmonizing spring-dialogue between the worlds.

This reconnection between heaven & earth was prefigured in the story of Jacob’s ladder from the Old Testament. Through his dream of the ‘stairway to heaven’, Jacob gave us a prophecy in the picture of a golden ladder on which choirs of Angels traverse between the ‘Above & Below’. The Mystery of the Ascension of Christ, 40 days after the Resurrection at Easter, fulfilled Jacob’s Prophecy. Christ as the Being of Love became the living bridge connecting us to the eternal.

Through this workshop we will learn how humanity will also be transfigured in the fullness of time. The company of the Angelic Hierarchies wait for us, their younger siblings, to ascend, first of all in our thinking, to meet them in fellowship, as they work all the while by our sides.

~Vitae Sophia~A Whitsun Festival of United Soul Endeavor

with Hazel Archer-Ginsberg, Velsum Voices & Eurythmy

1- 3 pm CTSaturday 27 May 2023 a Hybrid event in person* & on zoom

We are called to redeem the ether spheres to create an Ecclesia, a chalice for The Sophia. Then the spirit flame can spread out to become what Steiner called a “World Whitsun”, which began in earnest at the Christmas Conference. The Whitsun Festival highlights one of the greatest challenges of being human: placing our individual gifts, in right relationship within the social realm. This challenge is especially strong now during this ‘pandemic’. Our groups striving to know Spiritual Science must work together as a community, to have the possibility to create a new culture where a sacrament is possible in every encounter. Our individual strength is enhanced by weaving our gifts together, kindling our social world in conscious community.

Vernal Balance

HAPPY SPRING – Check out my Video Recording about the Vernal Equinox

20 March 2023 – “speaking with the Stars”: Today at 4:24 p.m CT is the Vernal Equinox – when the center of the Sun’s disk crosses the equator — both Earth’s equator & the celestial equator are heading north for the season.

Rudolf Steiner’s Lectures on this day

ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

Nowruz (Persian: literally “New Day”) the Iranian New Year, also known as the Persian New Year. Nowruz is partly rooted in the traditions of Mitraism & Zoroastrianism. In Mitraism, festivals had a deep linkage with the sun light. The Iranian festivals such as Mehrgan (autumnal equinox), Tirgan, & the eve of Chelle ye Zemestan (winter solstice) also had an origin in the Sun god (Surya). Among other ideas, Zoroastrianism is the first monotheistic religion that emphasizes broad concepts; such as the corresponding work of good & evil in the world,& the connection of humans to nature. Zoroastrian practices were dominant for much of the history of ancient Iran.

Although having Iranian & religious Zoroastrian origins, Nowruz has been celebrated by people from diverse ethno-linguistic communities for thousands of years. It is a secular holiday for most celebrants that is enjoyed by people of several different faiths, but remains a holy day for Zoroastrians

OSTARA (pronounced O-STAR-ah) is celebrated on the Vernal or Spring Equinox. The name for this Sabbat actually comes from that of the Teutonic lunar Goddess, Eostre. Her chief symbols are the bunny (for fertility & because the Ancient Ones who worshiped her often saw the image of a rabbit in the full moon), & the egg (representing the cosmic egg of creation). This is where the customs of “Easter Eggs” & the “Easter Bunny” originated.

Ostara is a time to celebrate the arrival of Spring, the renewal & rebirth of Nature herself, & the coming lushness of Summer. It is at this time when light & darkness are in balance, yet the light is growing stronger by the day. The forces of masculine & feminine energy, yin & yang, are also in balance at this time. At this time we think of renewing ourselves. We renew our thoughts, our dreams, & our aspirations. We think of renewing our relationships. This is an excellent time of year to begin anything new or to completely revitalize something. This is also an excellent month for prosperity rituals or rituals that have anything to do with growth.

Customs such as the lighting of new fires at dawn for healing, renewed life, & protection of the crops still survive in the Southern Americas as well as in Europe. Eggs were gathered & used for the creation of talismans & also ritually eaten. The gathering of different colored eggs from the nests of a variety of birds has given rise to two traditions still observed today – the Easter egg hunt, & coloring eggs in imitation of the various pastel colors of wild birds. It is also believed that humankind first got the idea of weaving baskets from watching birds weave nests. This is perhaps the origin of the association between colored Easter eggs & Easter baskets.

There is much symbolism in eggs themselves. The golden orb of its yolk represents the Sun God, its white shell is seen as the White Goddess, & the whole is a symbol of rebirth. The Goddess Eostre’s patron animal was the hare.

The Spring Equinox is a time of new beginnings, of action, of planting seeds for future grains, & of tending gardens. Spring is a time of the Earth’s renewal, a rousing of nature after the cold sleep of winter. As such, it is an ideal time to clean your home to welcome the new season. “Spring cleaning” is much more than simply physical work. It may be seen as a concentrated effort to rid your home of the problems & negativity of the past months, & to prepare for the coming spring and summer. To do this, we may approach the task of cleaning our homes with positive thoughts. This frees the home of any negative feelings brought about by a harsh winter. A common rule of thumb for Spring cleaning is that all motions involving scrubbing of stains or hand rubbing the floors should be done “clockwise”. This custom aids in filling the home with good energy for growth.

Appropriate Deities for Ostara include all Youthful and Virile Gods and Goddesses, Sun Gods, Mother Goddesses, Love Goddesses, Moon Gods and Goddesses, & all Fertility Deities. Some Ostara Deities to mention by name here include Persephone, Blodeuwedd, Eostre, Aphrodite, Athena, Cybele, Gaia, Hera, Isis, Ishtar, Minerva, Venus, Robin of the Woods, the Green Man, Cernunnos, Lord of the Greenwood, The Dagda, Attis, The Great Horned God, Mithras, Odin, Thoth, Osiris, & Pan.

Key actions to keep in mind during this time in the Wheel of the Year include openings & new beginnings. Work for improving communication & group interaction are recommended, as well as fertility & abundance. Ostara is a good time to start putting those plans and preparations you made at Imbolc into action. Start working towards physically manifesting your plans now

Equinox means “equal night” when the sun is positioned above the equator & day and night are about equal in length all over the world. This is the start of the Astrological year. Many ancient cultures built structures to point directly toward the rising Sun on this day every year. The celebration of the Vernal Equinox is about new life & hope, the planting of seeds & the activation of the fertility cycle.

A look into the ancient Mystery Schools honoring The Vernal Equinox: The Spring Equinox is also called: Alban Eilir, Eostar, Eostre, Feast of Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Festival of Trees, Lady Day, NawRuz, No Ruz, Ostara, Ostra, Rites of Spring. The Old Testament heroine of Spring was the goddess Ishtar- Persian for ‘star'(Esther is the Aramaic word for Ishtar).  So Ishtar was the goddess of the morning & evening star, as well as being the Great Mother, Shining One, Lady of Visions, Priestess of Priestess’, she was the source of the Oracles of Prophesy, & Possessor of the Tablets of Life’s Records. Her symbols were the eight pointed star, the pentagram, dove, serpents, & the double axe. Her planet was Venus. She wore a rainbow necklace. The Persians converted this necklace (the rainbow) into a razor-sharp bridge that led to the Mount of Paradise. In ancient Sumeria, she had 180 shrines where women gathered daily for prayer, meditation, & socializing. The night of the full moon, known as Shapatu, saw joyous celebrations in her temples.

In Ireland, the spring equinox was celebrated long before the arrival of the Celtic tribes. The best known of the ancient Irish equinox temples is Knowth, which is near to Newgrange (Brú na Boinne). Knowth has a 100-foot long passage that accepts the Sun on the morning of the Spring & Autumn Equinox. A second & older stone cairn equinox temple is found at Longhcrew & is given the name Cairn T. Both Knowth & Cairn follow a sunbeam on the morning of the Equinoxs to enter a passageway lighting up the sacred geometry on a back stone inside the temple. This precise timing from a period of over 6 thousand years ago still works today.

The German fertility Goddess was Ostara, who was associated with fertility. Ostara mated with the solar god on the Spring Equinox & nine months later she gave birth to a child at the Winter Solstice.

The Saxon name for the Germanic lunar goddess Ostara was Eostre. Her festival was held at the full moon after the Spring Equinox just like our Easter celebrations.

The Mayans of Central American have also honoured the spring equinox. For ten centuries they have held their unique celebration using their ancient knowledge of the Sunbeam. El Castillo is the name of their great pyramid of the Equinox & as the sunsets on its western face light & dark compliment each other creating a very special pattern of a diamond backed snake descending the pyramid. This solar magic has always been known as the “The Return of the Sun Serpent”.

For the Greeks the god-man of the Spring Equinox was Dionysus. He was associated with flowering plants & fruitful vines & he was always in pain during winter, symbolizing hibernation & the cessation of growth. He returned triumphant on the Spring Equinox & many researchers see direct parallels with the story of Jesus Christ.

Mesopotamia, Sumeria, Babylonia, Elam (5000 years ago) celebrated the start of their new year at the time of the spring equinox. Zoroastrianism was the religion of Ancient Persia until the advent of Islam 1400 years ago. “Nooruz,” their ‘new day’ or New Year was celebrated on the Spring Equinox. Many religious historians connect Judeo-Christian concepts to Zoroastrianism.

In Rome, about 200 years before the birth of Christ there was a wide range of what are today called “mystery cults”. Attis & Cybele held their Spring Equinox rituals at the location of today’s St. Peter’s on Vatican hill. Attis was also known under various names such as Osiris, Dionysus, Tammuz & Orpheus. The Attis & Cybele festival had a death or day of blood & three days of semi-death & then a return to life for the deceased. Attis‘s mother was called Nana & she was a virgin. Attis was crucified on a pine tree.  His blood was spilled to redeem the earth. Attis was both a sacrificial victim & a savior, his death & re-birth was intended to bring salvation to mankind. Most researchers will say that Attis is clearly a prefiguring prototype for The Christ.

In Judaism we can see that the Passover dinner was their spring fertility festival. It records the escape of the ancient Hebrews from slavery in Egypt – its main meal was of unleavened bread & lamb.

In America the native Indians honoured the Spring Equinox in landscape-sized temples such as Mystery Hill in Salem NH. Five standing stones & one recumbent stone are set in a linear alignment that connects the sunrise on both the Spring & Autumn Equinoxes.

March 20-23, is the mid-point of the Waxing Year. The spark of light that was born at Winter Solstice has reached maturity, & from this point forward, the days grow longer than the nights. This is the time of full Dawn, 6:00 a.m. on the Year Clock, & so was the time of the festivals of the Grecian Goddess, Eostre, & the Germanic Ostara, both Goddesses of Dawn. (It is from these Bright Ladies that the modern Easter holiday takes its name). This is the time that is often seen as the time of Kore’s return from the Underworld, where She (as Persephone) has ruled throughout the Winter. It is also the time of the celebration of the rebirth of Adonis the Beautiful.

Spring is the time for a celebration of planting & of the greening of the Earth. Folks start to talk about having ‘Spring Fever’ & doing ‘Spring cleaning’, as the brighter sunshine provides a needed morale boost.

Many traditions associated with Spring Equinox have been retained over the years & grafted onto the Easter celebration. Even today, people arise early on Easter morning to attend ‘Sunrise Service’. (Remember Eostre, the Dawn Goddess?)

May this time of new beginnings bring you the fresh start you need, as you begin to plan & to plant the seeds for the future you want to see grow with the light.

Saturday 27 May 2023 a Hybrid event in person* & on zoom

Breaking Bread

Greetings friends – Thanks to everyone who reached out to ask where I’ve been – Well besides dealing with some teeth issues (yep working out some heavy family karma) – I have been deep into an artistic rendering of my work with Mary Magdalene in preparation for our annual Easter Festival, which will begin on the eve of Lazarus Saturday; & then on the last day of Holy Week we will gather to explore the mystery of Mary Magdalene = She who anoints the ‘Anointed One’ in the holding of sacred space during the Harrowing of Hell on Holy Saturday. (Details on the Festivals below)

Sophie Takata

I tore myself away from the art making integration this morning since I had the honor of serving at the altar with Rev.Gisela Wielki who came in from NYC. Her sermon brought in the picture of how at this time of year – during Passion-Tide – the seeds buried in the darkness of the earth are breaking apart, dissolving their seed form, selflessly offering themselves up to a disintegration, a death – so that in their season, thru the power of the warmth of the Sun & the other elements, they can be reborn.

If we kept the seed in the palm of our hand simply admiring it’s wholeness it would never feed us. Wholeness has the quality of completeness, a kind of ending. Going into the darkness willingly, with intention & purpose to allow the disintegration is how we evolve – how we grow – reintegrating at a higher octave.

Lenny Fosterling

She connected this picture to the feeding of the 5000 from the Gospel of John – How Christ had to break up the loaves of bread to be able to nourish the people. The breaking up also allows the comic forces to enter, that is actually what feeds us Body, Soul & Spirit – When we break bread together to becomes the healing medicine that activates a new Wholeness.

This breaking apart reminds me of what happens when we stir a biodynamic preparation – we create the vortex in the prep & then it disintegrates thru the chaos when we reverse the stirring – allowing the cosmic forces to enter into the chaos to inform the vortex. The chaos opens us to the right divine order…

Tomorrow on the Vernal Equinox CG & I will join Petra & Mark Zinniker on their amazing biodynamic farm in WI to do a seasonal prep stir – blessing the land & the animals, & honoring the elementals. The mighty band of Merry Prep-stirs are encouraging everyone to do a stir on the Equinox so that the collective energy may cover the Earth with a glorifying intention. See you in the balance between dark & light.

RUDOLF STEINER’S CALENDAR OF THE SOUL
translated with added titles by Roy Sadler

PASSIONTIDE 1I, Mothering Sunday
The World’s Fulfilment
v50
Earth’s Mother speaks…
her joy of growth in every bud’s unfurling,
revealing the inherent forces of her being,
is speaking to the human I:
‘In bringing you my life
released from its enchantment,
I reach my true fulfilment’.

It is Mothering Sunday in England this Sunday. It is an old Christian tradition in contrast to the American holiday of Mothers Day on the 2nd Sunday of May. There is no mention of the Earth in the original but to me it fits here. My translations are free expressions, adhering to its iambic meditative rhythm. Unlike other versions I quite often change the line order, which I recognise might be a problem for eurythmists following Steiner’s choreography. This is a literal version of the 1st 4 lines:
There speaks to human selfhood,
in mighty revelation
and liberating its inherent forces,
the joy-in-growth of world existence:

I’d be pleased to read comments from any of you meditating the verses.
This is the mirror verse
EASTERTIDE III
Foundation of the Self
v3
The human spirit speaks…
the growing I, in self-forgetfulness
and conscious of its origin,
is speaking to the whole enwoven world:
‘In you, releasing chains
that bind me to myself,
I root my inborn truth’.

Rudolf Steiner’s Lectures on this day

ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

George de la Tour

Feast Day of Joseph the Carpenter, husband of Mary the Mother of the Matthew Jesus.

1797 – Death Day of Christiane Wilhelmine Sophie von Kühn (March 17, 1782 – March 19, 1797) the love interest & eventual fiancée of the German Romantic poet & philosopher Friedrich von Hardenberg, known to many simply as Novalis. Her image famously appears in Novalis’ Hymns to the Night, a foundational text of the literary movement known as German Romanticism.

Over I journey
And for each pain
A pleasant sting only
Shall one day remain.
Yet in a few moments
Then free am I,
And intoxicated
In Love’s lap lie.
Life everlasting
Lifts, wave-like, at me,
I gaze from its summit
Down after thee.
Your lustre must vanish
Yon mound underneath —
A shadow will bring thee
Thy cooling wreath.
Oh draw at my heart, love,
Draw till I’m gone,
That, fallen asleep, I
Still may love on.
I feel the flow of
Death’s youth-giving flood
To balsam and ether
Transform my blood —
I live all the daytime
In faith and in might
And in holy fire
I die every night
”.

Although Novalis’s love for Sophie has assumed mythic proportions, their time together was short . The two met on November 17, 1794 when Novalis was twenty-two & Sophie was only twelve. They became engaged on Sophie’s thirteenth birthday March 17, 1795. Sophie became sick in November 1795, & her sickness continued until her death at the age of 15 in March 1797. The loss of Sophie brought about a deep period of mourning & suffering in Novalis’ life.

Ludwig Tieck’s biography of Novalis describes Sophie, saying: “Even as a child, she gave an impression which–because it was so gracious and spiritually lovely–we must call superearthly or heavenly, while through this radiant and almost transparent countenance of hers we would be struck with the fear that it was too tender and delicately woven for this life, that it was death or immortality which looked at us so penetratingly from those shining eyes; and only too often a rapid withering motion turned our fear into an actual reality”.

1911 – Death day of Anna Eunike, Rudolf Steiner’s 1st wife. To supplement his income while working in Weimar, Steiner became tutor to the Eunike family. The father Eugen Friedrich Eunike had just died, & Anna was left behind as a widow with four daughters & a son. Rudolf Steiner had a deep connection with the deceased, following his after-death journey into the spiritual world. These insights helped Steiner form his seminal work “The Philosophy of Spiritual Activity”.

When the family moved to Berlin the friendship with Anna soon turned into a civil marriage, which Steiner kept very private. But we may see some clues into this relationship in the Mystery Dramas. During that time he was an instructor for the workers institute, of which Anna was very involved. The two separated when Steiner got involved with Theosophy; & in 1911 Anna Eunike dies at the fairly young age of 58. I often wonder if she selflessly sacrificed her unused etheric forces to help Rudolf Steiner in his mission.

1918 – The U.S. Congress establishes time zones & approves daylight saving time.

1945 –Adolf Hitler issues his “Nero Decree” ordering all industries, military installations, shops, transportation facilities and communications facilities in Germany to be destroyed.

2018 – The last male northern white rhinoceros, Sudan, dies.

MMMMM

Bernardino Luini

Greetings friends – So many have shown an interest in the phenomena that is Mary Magdalene which I touched on for the death day of Pope Gregory in my last essay, that I thought to share a bit about the process of how spirit works.

During the Holy Nights, I use the Festival times as milestones in the rorschach of the year – & open to receive inspirations into what the cycle of the coming year is calling for. During this significant year leading from the anniversary of the burning of the 1st Goetheanum to the Centennial of the Refounding of Anthroposophy – What has come forth feels revelatory.

Our Epiphany Festival ‘Follow the Star’ on the Birthday of Joan of Arc, explored the gifts of the Magi, & the Baptism – with Singing & Eurythmy – the perfect theme to start the New Year.

In alignment with the energies of the Spring Equinox I am bringing in Claudia Fontana from Ann Arbor for a weekend Eurythmy workshop: ‘The Categories of Aristotle’.

The big revelation for EASTER 2023 came on the morning of January 1st after a powerful NYE contemplation as part of the ‘Fire in the Temple’ gathering at Camphill Beaver Run. I woke up knowing that I was being called to work with Mary Magdalene!   I even saw in my mind’s eye the title of the Festival: ‘Mary Magdalene & the Women at the Tomb.’

This shook me a bit – since this individuality can be seen as controversial, & that was the last thing I want to be associated with, since many already consider my work with the new Mysteries of Anthroposophia to be unconventional. But I have certainly learned that when the call comes, none of that mishegoss matters.

Juan de Flandes

I have long resonated with the mysteries of Lazarus-John, because of my profound connection to the Rosicrucian impulse. So I wasn’t too suprised that the other flash of inspiration was to celebrate the Festival of Lazarus Saturday (the Saturday before Palm Sunday) this year.

Even before The Holy Nights I had taken up reading the Gospels, & Mary Magdalene’s Being kept poking me, strongly urging me to find & decipher her thru-line in the various Gospel accounts. I knew the apocryphal Gospels of Tomas & Philip spoke about her, & I found The Gospel of Mary Magdalene online. So after I returned from Beaver Run I started taking notes & collating material – telling my team here in Chicago that Mary Magdalene was coming in for Easter!

I find that after I receive an inspiration for a Festival or lecture or workshop, the Universe conspires to give me everything I need to serve.

So I was delighted when I returned from my Northern California tour, where I had brought a CrossQuarter Festival to Three Springs Biodynamic Farm, to find that a friend had sent me a notice about a 7 week zoom meeting called ‘Who is Mary Magdalene’? with Faith DiVecchio. I had missed the 1st session but Faith graciously allowed me to come in after that.

Faith is currently studying at the Christian Community Seminary & is able to bring deep insights into the being of Mary Magdalene. She holds the zoom space with a hygienic reverence that leaves plenty of breathing space. I love how she simply brings the Gospel readings & then allows the group to take them in, sharing their own impressions, & then moving into discussion & conversation. Every person in the intimate group blows me away with their insights; it is a soul opening communal experience. Being a lover & collector of spiritual images myself, I truly appreciate how Faith brings great works of art into every session for us to ponder & again share what becomes inspired within us.

https://www.sueellenparkinson.com/prints/mary-magdalene

Another powerful synchronicity came the same week I heard about Faith’s group, poet Fred La Motte invited me to a 4 day conference called ‘Re-Uniting With Our Roots: Mythica’s Second Annual Mary Magdalene Conference’ which explored the Gospel stories with an incredibly diverse array of artists, poets & musicians sharing their devotion & original creations.

Sisisterhood ~Sue Ellen Parkinson, one of the presenters

The focus was on celebrating the power of the Divine Feminine to encompass every human relationship; putting an emphasis on sisterhood – to heal the much maligned female friendship.

Jesus Casting out the 7 demons ~Sue Ellen Parkinson

And many have continued this work into a 40 day immersion thru Lenten-Tide to explore further the history, art, music & contemplative practices associated with Mary Magdalene. Kathleen Aspo does a great job curating the various voices thru Mythica her foundation for Education, Contemplation & the Arts.

Then I found out my dear friends Lila & David Tresemer wrote & produced & performed in a play about Mary Magdalene that had original music & choreography!

And David Tresemer PH.D & Laura-Lea Cannon wrote the Preface to the translation of ‘The Gospel Mary Magdalene’ that Faith recommended which they called ‘Who is Mary Magdalene?

And then a few weeks ago my beloved husband CG who is taking a class with Patrick Kennedy said that he mentioned Mary Magdalene in one of his sessions working with the Old Testament. So I started looking into Exodus & found a connection in my understanding of MM with The Shekinah, the expression of the Divine Feminine in the Hebrew tradition, & the powerful symbol of The Mercy Seat of the Arc of the Covenant. This seemed to point to a correspondence with The Egyptian Mysteries of Isis…& on & on…

Steven Hale, a regular contributor in the comment section of RR, has been sharing various clues & quotes about MM including, The Gospel of Peter, which I had not known about, & also insights from Steiner.

So much is pouring in…

As I mentioned in my last essay ‘Do what you are doing’ it really feels like there has been a shift in the world ethers allowing a new initiatory force to reach ‘those who have ears to hear’ & the will to take up the example & teachings of the “Apostle to the Apostles” – Mary Magdalene.

And you can join us for our annual Easter Festival:

1681 – Birthday of Georg Philipp Telemann, a German Baroque composer & multi-instrumentalist. Almost completely self-taught in music, he became a composer against his family’s wishes. He held important positions in Leipzig, Sorau, Eisenach,& Frankfurt before settling in Hamburg in 1721, where he became musical director of the city’s five main churches. While Telemann’s career prospered, his personal life was always troubled: his first wife died only a few months after their marriage, & his second wife had extramarital affairs & accumulated a large gambling debt before leaving Telemann.

Telemann was one of the most prolific composers in history & was considered by his contemporaries to be one of the leading German composers of the time—he was compared favorably both to his friend Johann Sebastian Bach, who made Telemann the godfather & namesake of his son Carl Philipp Emanuel, & to George Frideric Handel, whom Telemann also knew personally. He remained at the forefront of all new musical tendencies & his music is an important link between the late Baroque & early Classical styles

Here is a Video with a brief Biography of Marie Steiner-von Sivers: ‘A Cosmic Being’

1867 – Birthday of Marie Steiner von Sivers – born into an aristocratic family in Włocławek, Poland, then part of Russia. She was well-educated, fluent in Russian, German, English, French & Italian. She studied theater & recitation with several teachers in Europe.

Marie von Sivers “appeared one day” at one of Rudolf Steiner’s early lectures in 1900. In the autumn of 1901, she posed the question to Steiner, “Would it be possible to create a spiritual movement based on European tradition and the impetus of Christ?” Rudolf Steiner later reported: With this, I was given the opportunity to act in a way that I had only previously imagined. The question had been put to me, and now, according to spiritual laws, I could begin to answer it.

Marie Steiner-von Sivers & Rudolf Steiner were married on Christmas eve 1914, & she was one of his closest colleagues. Marie von Sivers collaborated with Steiner for the rest of his life & carried his work beyond his death in 1925 until her own death in 1948. She accompanied him & helped him as secretary, translator, editor, & organizer of his lecture tours & other public activities. She assisted Steiner’s work with her own resources & in 1908 founded the Philosophical-Theosophical Press (later Philosophical-Anthroposophical) to publish Steiner’s work

She made a great contribution to the development of anthroposophy, particularly in her work on the renewal of the performing arts (eurythmy, speech & drama), & the editing & publishing of Rudolf Steiner’s literary estate.

Starting in 1912, the art of eurythmy was developed by Rudolf Steiner. Under Marie Steiner-von Sivers’ guidance, it developed in three directions, as a stage art, as an integral part of Waldorf pedagogy, & as a therapeutic method. Under her tutelage, two schools of eurythmy were founded, in Berlin & in Dornach, Switzerland.

Marie von Sivers was trained in recitation & elocution & made a study of purely artistic speaking. She gave introductory poetry recitals at Steiner’s lectures & assisted him in the development of the 4 Mystery Dramas (1910–1913). With her help, Steiner conducted several speech & drama courses with the aim of raising these forms to the level of true art. Ms Steiner died on December 27th 1948

1883 – Deathday of Karl Marx. Rudolf Steiner revealed that Marx was a landowner in Northern France in the early 9th century, & that one day his property was seized by a rival. Marx was then forced to work under the new owner of his former property. The new owner reincarnated as Friedrich Engels, who embarked on a compensatory cooperation with his former rival. So it is that old impulses of destiny may work on in a new incarnation. No wonder that Marx became a fierce enemy of all private property, having himself experienced in a previous life how insecure the private ownership of property can become. Those seeking deeper insight into this historic-karmic background of Marx & Engels & their activities are referred to Steiner’s lecture of 6 April 1924. GA 236.

Saturday 27 May 2023 a Hybrid event in person* & on zoom

Age quod agis

Bernardino Luini (Thanks to Faith DiVecchio for this image)

Dear friends, I have been deep into research, study & contemplation of the individuality we call Mary Magdalene. The work has intensified during this Lenten-Tide Season in preparation for our Easter Festival here at the Chicago Rudolf Steiner Branch, on Holy Saturday. (see annoucement below). Besides the leading thoughts & art images I will share, I am writing a poem encompassing these findings & insights, which Velsum Voices will transform into a song for us to sing together on the day of the Fest.

There are so many amazing resources to work with. Besides the Synoptic Gospels, there are the Gnostic texts, most notably ‘The Gospel of Mary Magdalene a 1st century papyrus codex discovered in Cairo in 1896, written in Sahidic Coptic.

After taking 46 pages of notes, I have narrowed things down to 8 pages from which I am curating the poem. And for the presentation itself I have decided to hone it into a few essential elements: The casting out of the 7 demons as initiation, The Anointing, Holding witness at the foot of the Cross & at the Tomb, & the 3 Marys as The Myrrhophores – an ancient sect of women who work with Threshold oils.

I have been holding this process close, but decided to mention it today as it is the Deathday in 604 of Pope Gregory I, the one who denigrated The Magdalene by mislabeling her a prostitute – issued in Homily 33 from 591 AD (Leloup xiv). And although the Catholic Church officially redacted this decree in 1969, his depiction of Mary Magdalene is still believed by many as the “Gospel Truth”. The power of one pope to change the world’s perception of a powerful woman, hundreds of years after the fact, & for over a thousand years into the future, gives one pause for thought.

Then on 3 June 2016 = ‘the Feast of the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus’, Pope Francis, elevated the Sainthood of Mary Magdalene giving her Feast Day as 22 July. The announcement quotes:

~Rabanus Maurus Magnentius (a Frankish Benedictine monk born in 780, theologian, poet, archbishop in Mainz, Germany) in his Prologue from: ‘De vita Mariae Magdalenae = On the life of Mary Magdalene, he said of her that she was: ‘Beloved of Christ and greatly loved by Christ’ “Dilectrix Christi et a Christo plurimum dilecta”.

Saint Anselm of Canterbury hails her: “Chosen because you are beloved and beloved because you are chosen of God” (“Electa dilectrix et dilecta electrix Dei” ~ Oratio LXXIII ad sanctam Mariam Magdalenam)

The ‘Angelic Doctor’Saint Thomas Aquinas calls Mary Magdalene the “apostolorum apostola” = Apostle of the apostles – because she announces to the 11 what they in turn are able to announce to the whole world after the Pentecost.

According to the 2016 Vatican press release the decision will reflect more deeply on the dignity of women, and the greatness of the mystery of Divine Mercy.”

This made me think of: Exodus 25:22“The Ark of the Covenant was a box of acacia wood overlaid with gold both inside and out. It had a golden cover called the Mercy Seat with two golden Cherubim spreading their wings above. It was the place God chose to meet with His people.

Dear Friends – Something powerful is seeking to come thru at this time, so strong that even the Vatican feels the shift in the ethers.

Olivia Tautkus

I will leave you to ponder, as I am, this connection between Mary Magdalene & the Mercy Seat – Thinking on how ‘the veil was rent in twain’ with Christ’s deed on Golgotha – revealing the ‘Holy of Holies’ to all –

Blessings on this 1st Sunday of Passion-Tide.

RUDOLF STEINER’S CALENDAR OF THE SOUL
translated with added titles by Roy Sadler
LENT 4, PASSIONTIDE I
The Passiontide Hope
v49
‘I feel the force of Cosmic Being’,
speaks clear thinking,
recalling its own spirit’s growth
in world nights’ darkness,
and turning to the dawning cosmic day
with inner rays of hope.

Its mirror verse is at the fire festival of Beltane. In ancient times it was a full moon Celtic marriage festival. ‘Marry’ is my free translation of ‘unite’.
EASTERTIDE IV, BELTANE
The Marriage Gift
v4
‘I feel the essence of my being’,
speaks senses’ feeling
that in the sunlit world unites
with floods of light;
to clarity of thought
it would bring warmth
and marry Man and World.

The Categories of Aristotle – a process of contraction…
Is there a path to expansion…..?

PUBLIC LECTURE AND EURYTHMY WORKSHOP WITH CLAUDIA FONTANA

Saturday 25 March 2023 – Workshop – 9 am CT– (10:30 am 1/2 hour break – 11 am) 12:30 pm CT CT– Purchase tickets at the door or pay online $50

The Categories of AristotleA process of contraction…exploring a path to expansion
