“What is to be the starting force & impulse for events in social & ethical life must come out of the spiritual world.” Rudolf Steiner, New Spiritual Impulses in History” Dornach 16 December, 1917

Birthday of St. John, the disciple whom Jesus loved. Thru the research of Rudolf Steiner (GA 93, 264, 265) we hear of this individuality in other lives as: Hiram, Lazarus, Christian Rosenkreutz, St. Germain.

Christian-Morgenstern & RS

1871 – Birthday of Christian Otto Josef Wolfgang Morgenstern a German author & poet from Munich. He worked for a while as a journalist in Berlin, but spent much of his life traveling through Germany, Switzerland, & Italy, in a vain attempt to recover his health. His travels, though they failed to restore him to health, allowed him to meet many of the foremost literary & philosophical figures of his time in central Europe.

Morgenstern’s poetry, much of which was inspired by English literary nonsense, is immensely popular, even though he enjoyed very little success during his lifetime. Embedded in his humorous poetry is a subtle metaphysical streak. He discussed how many angels could sit on a needle. Many Germans know some of his poems & quotations by heart, e.g. the following line from “The Impossible Fact” (“Die unmögliche Tatsache”, 1910): Weil, so schließt er messerscharf / Nicht sein kann, was nicht sein darf. “For, he reasons pointedly – That which must not, cannot be.” Christian Morgenstern was also an acclaimed translator, rendering into German various prominent works from Norwegian & French, including the dramas & poems of Henrik Ibsen, Knut Hamsun, Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson , August Strindberg & Rudolf Steiner.

Morgenstern was a member of the General Anthroposophical Society. Dr. Rudolf Steiner called him ‘a true representative of Anthroposophy’. He died in 1914 of tuberculosis.

Muawiyah Caliph

680 Death-day of Muawiyah Caliph. The meaning of Muawiyah in Arabic is “young fox”. Muawiyah worked as a scribe for Muhammad. The story goes: He had a pen behind his ear which he had not used. The Prophet said, ‘What is this on your ear?’ He said, ‘A pen which I have made ready for Allah & His Messenger.’ The Prophet said. ‘May Allah repay you well on behalf of your Prophet! By Allah, I will only ask you to write down revelation from heaven.”

In 639, Muawiyah was appointed as the governor of Syria. Under his governance the Syrian army became a major military force. Muawiya was one of the first to realize the full importance of having a navy. During his naval expeditions he took Rhodes & later Cyprus; then shifted his focus back towards Constantinople, & Anatolia. By his creation of a fleet, Muawiyah was the driving force of the Muslim effort against Byzantium. His navy raided the Byzantine islands & coasts at will. The shocking defeat of the imperial fleet by the young Muslim navy at the Battle of the Masts in 655 was of critical turning point. It opened up the Mediterranean, considered a “Roman lake”, & began a centuries-long series of naval conflicts over the control of the Mediterranean. This also allowed the expansion of the state into Africa & Spain. Trade between the Muslim eastern & southern shores & the Christian northern shores almost ceased during this period, isolating Western Europe from developments in the Muslim world.

Muawiyah was crowned as caliph at a ceremony in Jerusalem in 661.

We learn from Karmic Relationships Vol. 7 lecture 6 that he was reincarnated as Woodrow Wilson.

Climbing Jacob’s Ladder – A Festival of Ascension, part 6 of a Lecture by ~Hazel ArcherGinsberg

I will touch briefly here on a subject that is vast enough for its own series of lectures: the image of the phantom body of Christ as the reconstituted New Adam, & the Resurrection Body, which points us in the direction of our future evolution– not back to the garden – but going forward toward the New Jerusalem. Materializing & dematerializing at will just as the Christ did during the time between Easter & Ascension.

This ‘body’ encompasses the whole of humanity. It is like a cell that is multiplying; growing ever more evident in the etheric realm. – Rudolf Steiner calls it a redeeming of the group-soul of mankind.

Christ has united with the earth in order to make it the new Sun of a new universe.

The expression “Put on the Resurrection Body” used by the apostle Paul, is a true picture of what can happen for us. An imagination of this is hidden in the allegory of the Chymical Wedding of Christian Rosenkreutz .

Goethe’s Fairy Tale is another powerful imagination that came thru when I was brainstorming on images that capture the essence of the Ascension.  It’s been said that ‘The Green Snake & the Beautiful Lily’, which is full of esoteric symbolism, was born out of Goethe’s reading of The Chymical Wedding . This Tale was also written as a response to a work by Friedrich Schiller called ‘Letters on the Aesthetic Education of Man’.  One of the main ideas centers on the question of human freedom. Schiller was trying to build an inner bridge between reality & the ‘ideal human being’.

He wrote these ‘Letters’ during the time of the French Revolution, which was driven by a desire for outer social changes, to enable human beings to become free.  But both Schiller & Goethe recognized that freedom cannot be ‘imposed’ from the outside, it must arise from within.

So Goethe took this inspiration & set about writing a Fairy Tale that would show, in imaginative pictures, the way in which a human soul could become whole & free by bridging the abyss between the human & the divine within.

Rudolf Steiner, in his 1918 book ‘Goethe’s Standard of the Soul’, tells us: “On the river stands the Temple in which the marriage of the Young Man with the Lily takes place. The ‘marriage’ with the supersensible. The realization of the free personality is possible in a human soul whose forces have bridged the state of regularity with the divine forces of transformation.”

This article by Steiner lead to an invitation for him to speak to the German Theosophical Society which eventually led to his becoming its General Secretary…& this story continues to live on in us…

Whitsun Verse by Rudolf Steiner:

There first

Where sense can know no more,

Stands the portal, which discloses

Life-reality

To Soul-being;

This portal’s key the Soul may fashion

If she herself grow strong within the strife

By World-Powers waged on their own ground

With human forces;

If of her own accord she puts to flight

The sleep, which at the frontier of her senses

Cloaks the forces of knowledge

In spirit-night. (Translated by Owen Barfield)

Climbing Jacob’s Ladder – A Festival of Ascension, part 1 of a Lecture by ~Hazel Archer Ginsberg

Ascension comes when the season of blossoming is reaching fullness. Trees & plants, stirring upwards in growth, have been touched by the warmth & light from above, & show forth the blessing of the heavens in color & scent. The whole of nature reaches upwards towards the heights.

The longing of the human soul strives upward also, in unison with nature, seeking the touch of world-warmth from the sun. This mood of ascension attunes all of life to the cosmic expanses.

However closely heaven & earth are aligned, their relationship is not always the same. In this we see the miracle of the seasons –the breathing-in, & the breathing-out, of the earth soul.

At the time of the Ascension of Christ, nature celebrates the ascension of the soul of the earth. – It is not by chance that the 40 days between Easter & Ascension coincide with this season.

Every year, when the earth breathes out in the springtime, the mystery of the Ascension of Christ, Who is the Spirit of the Earth, is renewed.

The stars in their constellations are shifting into their Summer places now, & the planets tread the ordered measure of their courses around them. These dots of light in the distance, point us to the spiritual beings who direct the life of the universe.

From this point of view, Ascension is a festival of the hierarchies.

Remember, that when Christ descended thru the heavens, & came into human form, the hierarchies lost His presence. They could only find Him by looking into the depths – bearing witness to  the God Who entered physical existence to remind earthly humanity of its cosmic citizenship.

At the Ascension, the mystery of the resurrection was brought back to the company of heaven – Signaling the return of the lost world of earth into the community of the stars. Since that time, the life of this planet is renewed with the cosmic forces that stream earthward.

The sacrifice of Christ initiated on earth, was the antidote to the consequences of death brought on by the Fall – the redemptive deed that turns death into life.

The Concentrated seed of Christ’s deed continues to grow in the earth thru this connection to the stars.

This reconnection was prefigured in the story of Jacob from the Old Testament. Thru his dream of the stairway to heaven, Jacob gave us the prophecy of the Ascension – A golden ladder set between heaven & earth, on which choirs of angels & our beloved dead can ascend & descend.

When the Risen Christ returned ‘to sit at the right hand of the Father’, at the Ascension, He became the bridge between the above & below.

The Christ impulse dwells in the earth, & extends into the Divine Presence, to fulfill the prophecy of Jacobs ladder, so that thru this deed, mankind is brought near again to cosmic beings.

As the Christ has ascended, so too, in the fullness of time will humanity be transfigured. The company of the hierarchies wait, for us, their younger siblings to ascend in our thinking to meet them in fellowship, as they work all the while at our sides.

Tomorrow we will continue this theme

until soon

Walpurgisnacht

Walpurgisnacht Fritz_Roeber_Fritz Roeber

April 30 – Walpurgis Night, In Germanic folklore Walpurgisnacht, also called Hexennacht, literally “Witches’ Night” – the eve of the feast day of Saint Walpurga, an 8th-century abbess in Francia.  In Goethe’s Faust we see 2 scenes: ‘Romantic Walpurgis Night’ the night of a witches’ meeting on the Brocken, the highest peak in the Harz Mountains, a range of wooded hills in central Germany; and later in Part 2 a ‘Classical Walpurgis Night’ is featured.

This is the Eve of Beltane or May Day. Beltane, the old Celtic name for May Day, means bright fire or fire of Bel, the name of the Solar force, whose feast marks the beginning of the 2nd half of the year.

Wood from 9 sacred trees is gathered, & the great Bel-fire is built & ritualistically ignited on the hill, by the High priestess or Arch-Druid. The people would jump these ‘need-fires’ for fertility, healing & protection.

Torches lit from it were carried home to re-light the hearth fires. The folk would walk their animals in-between them to ensure a productive season – this is the mating season after all for man & beast.

There were other May Day customs: like walking the circuit of one’s property, repairing fences & boundary markers, processions of all kinds, archery tournaments, Morris dances, sword play, & of course making merry with music & drinking.

May morning is a time when the veil between the worlds can easily be pushed aside; but instead of the spirits coming into our realm from the other side, which is the case with Halloween, the polar opposite of Mayday on the wheel of the year -the fairies can enchant us over into their mystical realms.

This is a magical time, perfect for gathering ‘wild’ water, especially the May morning dew, or water from hidden wells & springs. These wild waters were collected & used to bath in for beauty, or to drink for health.

May Day is considered the start of summer – the time of milk & honey. This sensuous fertile energy is totally universal, & can be applied on many different levels. When we acknowledge these creative forces in the dance of our lives, it takes us to our own personal, modern-day version of dancing around the maypole, where we weave & combine the opposing energies within ourselves, blending them into one balanced source.

So yes, whether you know it or not, there will be at least one song that plays in your sub-conscious head on this eve of the 1st day of May, when you become perhaps, the Queen of the May, or Jack-in the Green. Our body like the body of the earth instinctively knows its Beltane, the time of vitality & passion & new growth. And the wisdom of our spirit seeks the natural union of polarities that occur at this time, giving us the opportunity for integration, in the alchemical dance of our souls…

Because under all the sexual innuendo & frivolity, it’s really all about the inner mystic marriage, the union of fire & water -opposites complimenting each other, to become one, bringing all the elements into balance.

You’ll just have to go dancing naked in the forest preserve on your own time…

For now, let’s work to unify the polarities of our being, by sparking the new fire of creative fertility & passion, & marrying it with the beautiful, healing waters of compassion & pure love. So we can truly celebrate the marriage feast of our lives, with a grounded, mindful joy.

So if it is your will – light your Bel-fire, marry it to the water, by floating it in the chalice of your choice. Take the time you need there…To do or not, what you will…Whisper your marriage vows into the water…or dance the 1st dance…or smash the glass…whatever your ceremony calls for…short simple or silent…it doesn’t matter…a 3 day bacchanal, with dancing puppets…it’s all good…cause it’s all about what’s inside…Peace & Love ~hag

Mercury retrograde (starts today April 28, 2016 & goes till May 27th 2016) This messenger of the gods usually goes retrograde 3 times a year, but in 2016 it is going retro 4 times. This one is also more significant because it give us a total of 5 planets in retrograde right now – along with Saturn, Jupiter, Mars & Pluto! This is very rare & is going to amplify the effects overall.

Mercury retrograde has such a negative reputation; yet it is just a normal pattern in the cycle of life. In fact, Mercury retrograde is very necessary for helping us awaken our consciousness, fulfilling the specific purpose of thinking differently. When we learn how to use this liberating energy it will work in our favor. The first step is to understand the role of Mercury, the planet of communication. It rules over how we express ourselves, how we think & how we communicate our ideas & feelings to the outside world.

When Mercury goes retrograde, it helps us to shift our focus away from expressing outwardly, giving us the opportunity to go within, to work out how we really feel & how we really want to express our ideas & thoughts with the world.

When Mercury goes retrograde, it gives us time to experience those deeper parts of our psyche in order to tune into our soul truth. It is a powerful time to get real with ourselves. It gives us the gift of holding truth close to the heart.

Mercury retrograde does come with a few annoyances, but underneath it is such a powerful time of regeneration & healing. In order to work with Mercury Retrograde it is important not to make any new decisions that are binding or require a contract. The reason for this is because we are in an “assessing truth” phase.

Mercury Retrograde however, is a really good time to revisit the past to assess whether our way of communicating with the world has benefited us or needs to be changed.

Learning how to work with others, being able to communicate truthfully is one of the themes during this time. Take things slow, to keep things simple, to get in touch with that inner voice.

~TODAY I am everywhere

I greet myself in the gentleman with the thought of his mother, Clinging to some far off corner of his mind…

Over there, I stand in she, Who is the only song of her dying grandfather…

And beyond, in them, That will soon come to be, Rising up, In the aroma, Of their great granddaughters bread, Which will feed them, In time…

TODAY I am the world…

easter resurrection!

Dear Friends – I am resurrecting my practice of writing a poem a day for the ReverseRitual Blog. Here is my offering for today April 5th 2016:

I stare into the Sun

Fore-gathering

Noetic sight

Into squinting syllables.

Watch it pour out honeyed unguents –

A sweet viscus light

Overflowing the ashen cup of night.

My I’s washed

With April snow

Floating like a shaken globe

Falling fragrant on the flower.

The 3rd Stage: (Part 4 of the 12 part series) Encountering the Inner Layers of the Earth as a Rosicrucian/Christian Initiation, in relation to the Beatitudes and the 9-fold human being.

Here we see an extension of equanimity into positivity & open mindedness. At this stage we must learn to brave the world morally & intellectually, with a special emphasis on abstaining from anger – even when everything we hold dear is being attacked. To develop the capacity to remain engaged but detached when everything is tumbling down around us – to be able to say “Yes” when the rest of the world says “No”, that is what must be achieved before the next step can be taken. Rudolf Steiner calls this stage: The Crowning with Thorns, which leads us to the Guardian of the Threshold.

This gives rise to a new symptom, or indication, recognized by those who work with the class lessons as the power to detach the faculties of Thinking, feeling, & willing. We must learn to separate & also to re-unite them at will.

So long as some outer event carries us away, we are immature. If we are not masters of our own impulses, our actions may have a shattering influence in all worlds.  The disciple must be able to remain positive & open minded in the face of any event, no matter how catastrophic.

That is the only way to reach freedom.

The separation of Thinking, feeling, & willing actually produces a change in the brain that is symbolized by the Crown of Thorns.

Dr. Steiner warns that if the disciple has not properly achieved the earlier stages, tries to go too fast, or receives wrong guidance, the change in the brain may lead to insanity – which is an involuntary separation of these faculties without the possibility of their reunification by  the inner will. The disciple must bring about the separation by an act of conscious volition.

So here we meet the phenomenon known as the Guardian of the Threshold, which Steiner calls the appearance of the lower double. It is often dreadful, for it is the offspring of all our urges & unresolved karma – All impulses of will, selfish desires & chaotic thoughts, which appear to the Initiate in visible form – our own personification in the astral world. This form must be met before we can find the higher Self.

The Guardian of the Threshold, is a phenomenon of astral vision since ancient times. In the Egyptian Book of the Dead it is referred to as the ‘evil pilot’. It is the origin of all the myths concerning the struggles of Heroes with monsters- of Perseus & Hercules of St. George & Siegfried…

So what is our work here? In striving toward this stage of initiation we must be able to find strength within our own Ego under the influence of Christ, to purify our astral bodies here on earth.

The 3rd Beatitude is a help for this: “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.”

It is the antidote to the 3rd layer of the inner earth known as the Vapor Earth. Some of the outer characteristics described by Steiner’s clairvoyant vision speak of it as displaying a will-like expression capable of enormous expansion, like a cancer. “Life present at every point”. The substance is imbued with inner forces resembling passions and urges.

This is a realm of inverted feeling; joy becomes sorrow; sorrow is joy. The original quality of any feeling or sensation is extinguished & converted into its opposite.

The 3rd Beatitude thru Steiner is: “Blessed and filled in their astral bodies with God are those who become meek thru the power of their own Ego, who can foster calmness and equanimity within themselves; all comfort and well-being on earth shall be their reward, they will inherit the kingdom of earth.”

As we know, the astral body was incorporated into the human being during the Moon evolution, & the Luciferic beings who gained influence over humanity at that time established themselves specifically in the astral body, in an attempt to keep the human being from reaching our highest earthly goal.

This influence was also inscribed into the planetary spheres. We saw on Holy Wednesday of this year an eclipse of the vernal full moon (that’s 3 years in a row that we have had a lunar eclipse during Holy Week) But there was another Planetary alignment happening that day as well! Around the eclipse of the Vernal Full Moon in Libra, which sets up the rhythm of the movable feast of Easter every year, Mercury, ruler of Wednesday, & herald of the spiritual world, also stood in conjunction with Sun & Moon & Earth, gathering up the message humanity offers to the gods.

Then some 40 days later, during the ten days from Ascension to Pentecost, we will see, Mercury will come to another conjunction to return the message from our vernal queries in a rare configuration called a ‘transit’- which only happens 13 or 14 times each century!

~from The Astronomical Letters of Elisabeth Vreede September, 1928, p. 121 “When Mercury Stood in Libra: The approaching opening of the Goetheanum at Michaelmas brings before the soul that September evening when the foundation stone of the house dedicated to spiritual science was laid at nightfall by Dr. Steiner in a solemn ritual. With an invocation of the hierarchies, the foundation stone, the double dodecahedron, “symbol in its twofold twelvefoldness of the striving human soul, was sunk as microcosm into the macrocosm, “let down “into the condensed kingdom of the elements.” To this stone was added the document that contained the solemn vow of humankind toward the spiritual world. This document closed with the words: “Laid by the Johannes Building Association…on the twentieth day of September 1880, after the Mystery of Golgotha, that is, 1913 after the birth of Christ, when Mercury as evening star stood in Libra, the Balance.”

Mercury, in the same transit that occurred on Holy Wednesday 2016, was a cosmic witness to the laying of the foundation stone at the 1st Goetheanum, the only celestial body mentioned in this sacred ceremony!

When the seed of individuality was planted into the astral body during the Old Moon phase, a possibility for humanity to become disconnected from the spiritual world was also implanted into the Mercury sphere.

By laying the foundation stone at the time of the Mercury transit, was Rudolf Steiner working to heal this possible rift?

Since the descent of Christ to earth, when it became possible for our Ego to be imbued with the Christ Impulse, humanity has been sanctioned to fulfill the mission of the earth by finding the power within to bridle the astral body & drive out the Luciferic influences.

Steiner on the 3rd Beatitude: “Those who can curb their astral body, who are so strong that they cannot be moved to anger without the consent of their Ego, who are even-tempered & inwardly strong enough to overcome the astral body, will fulfill the purpose of earthly evolution.”

So in the 3rd Beatitude we have the formula to overcome the cancerous urges of the 3rd layer of the inner earth.

Where will we find ourselves tomorrow?

Until soon

Blessings & Peace – ~hag = Hazel Archer Ginsberg at ReverseRitual@gmail.com
