Opening the way for Brigid, the Celtic Alchemical Triple Goddess of the 4 fires & the purifying waters which gives birth to healing.
A long time ago, nigh the beginning, near the waters of a sacred well, at the first crack of alabaster in the young morning at the Cross-Quarter time between Winter & Spring, there at the very threshold – the goddess Brigid slipped into the world, & the waters of the earth rippled with joy.
Up rose a column of fire – out of the head of She – burning clear to the very sky. ‘Ha’, She laughed, reaching up to break away a flaming plume from her crown; dropping it on the ground before Her. There it leapt & shone, creating a blazing hearth.
Then from the fire of her hearth, Brigid used both hands to draw out a leaping tongue of heat, swallowed it, & felt the fire burn straight to her heart. There stood the goddess, fire crowning her head, fire leaping inside her heart, glowing & shooting from her hands, & dancing on the smoldering hearth before her.
The waters
of the sacred well quickened as Brigid built a chimney of brick about her
hearth. Then she formed a roof of thatch & walls of stone. And so it was
that by the waters of the sacred well the goddess built the forge in which she
keeps the 4 fires which have served the world evermore.
Out of the fire in Brigid’s hands baked the craft of bending iron. Out of the fire on Brigid’s hearth & the waters of her sacred well came the healing potions, teas, & tinctures. Out of the fire in Brigid’s head flared out writing & poetry. Out of the fire in Brigid’s heart spread the warmth of compassion.
Word of the
gifts of Brigid’s fire traveled deep & wide. People flocked to learn from
Brigid the secret of using fire to soften iron & bend it to the shape of
their will. The people called it smithcraft, & made wheels, pots, &
tools that did not break.
All the
medicine plants of the earth were gathered & brought to the house of the
goddess. With their leaves, flowers, bark, & roots, they offered themselves
to the waters of her sacred well. Brigid made healing brews. She gave a boy
with weak teeth an infusion of the dandelion root. She gave a young woman the
decoction of raspberry leaf to help her womb carry a child. An old bent man,
took from Brigid wintergreen bark for his ache & black cherry juice for the
gout. She gave comfrey to a girl with a broken leg & blue cohosh to another
to bring her moon-blood without pain. Brigid infused motherwort, licorice root,
& dried parsley for a woman who was becoming a crone. “Cup a
day,” said Brigid, “that you stay supple & strong.”
The people
were healed & wanted Brigid’s recipes. “But we can’t remember which
plants for which healings, where to gather them or how long to steep
them,” they told Brigid.
The fire on
Bridget’s head blazed bright. She took up a blackened stick & made marks
with it on a flat piece of bark. “These are the talking marks,” She
said. “They are the way to remember what you don’t want to forget.”
The talking
marks also let the people write down the stories of her wisdom. Here is one
that fits for us today:
Once 2 men,
came to Brigid, both had a terrible case of leprosy.
“Bathe
yourself in my well.” said Brigid to the 1st man. And so it was that at
every place the healing waters touched, the man’s skin turned whole again.
“Now
bathe your friend,” said Brigid.
Repulsed,
the man backed away from his friend. “I won’t touch him,” he said.
“Then
you are not truly healed,” said the goddess. With that truth revealed, the
1st man’s leprosy returned & the goddess herself bathed & healed the
2nd man.
“Return
to me with compassion,” she said to the 1st man. “There find your
healing.”
The folk
hold the wisdom of the goddess close; & every year on Imbolc they thank
Brigid for her well of wisdom & her fires of hand, hearth, head &
heart.
Brigid is a Triple goddess holding the archetype of the Maiden, Mother & Crone. In her maiden aspect, she is said to charm new life into the cold heart of Winter, with her white birch wand, to help him open his eyes to the promise of Spring. Imbolc literally means ‘in the belly’ it is the lambing season after all, when the milk begins to flow, this is Her Mother aspect.
This is traditionally a time of purification – a time of re-dedication – of initiation, when the power of the Wise Crone comes to bear. So start by cleaning your house! Brigid will thank you for it. And if you have any Christmas greenery lingering, burn it now. And bathe with warm milk for health & beauty, setting aside a time to reflect on what you will renew.
Meditate upon what you would like to see grow in health & strength this year: for yourself, your family, your community, the Earth, & ask for Bride’s blessing upon your prayers.
Make your own Brigid Cross, a fiery sun-wheel & hang it up, especially in the kitchen where her influence can bless your food.
Give an offering: cake, buttered bread & milk will do — outside your door: Brigid & her cow are said to walk through the neighborhood tonight. In the city it is proper to give food to the homeless.
Leave a red silk ribbon on your doorstep for Brigid to bless: It can then be used for healing purposes. When I was a wee girl whenever we would skin our knee, or some such, my ma would say, ‘Go, fetch Brigid’s ribbon’. Then she would wrap it gently round the booboo – lo & behold – it would be all better!
When my daughter was young, we would gather with other Waldorf families to honor & explore the power of the Triple Goddess within us, through storytelling, crafting fiery Sun-Wheel’s around the fire, sharing a potluck meal, & making a scavenger hunt in the woods.
Can you feel the earth quickening? This is a magical time, when the sap begins to rise & the waters start to flow. While frost still bites & winds still blow, the light is growing stronger, & life begins to wake. It is the time of year when the belly of the great mother quickens with the growing light, for this is the feast of Brigid – the midwife of the New Year ‘s Sun. Through the union of fire & water, we can work with the elementals to call in the Spring.
Thank you, Brigid, for the smith-craft of your forge, the soothing healing teas, the talking marks, & for the warmth of compassion. May we use it wisely to prepare for growth & renewal, performing the ancient rituals of spring cleaning, purifying & anointing the body electric, awakening the spirit within…
A time of
spiritual re-dedication, of self-blessing & initiation, of affirming &
energizing creative work…
A time of
blessing the seeds & consecrating the garden tools…
A time to
purify & get fertile, so let’s charm the plow, & kiss the candle, to
re-kindle, a need-fire, as a welcoming beacon, to call back, our dormant power,
to heat up, our potential, & re-seed our creativity. As we add fuel to the
fire of our community, one spark warms us all, a purifying fire, that burns
clean & opens the way to the true power of love & light from deep
within us all…
I will kick off the Prep-makers conference at Michael Fields Institute tonight with a ‘Candlemas’ offering to begin our work of forging tools to bring the Cosmic Light into the Earth.
After some leading thoughts we will gather in Triad Groups to do Rudolf Steiner’s ‘Seed Exercise’ from How to Know Higher Worlds.
Describe, precisely what you see
Picture clearly, that the plant will grow out of this seed
Reflect: light & earth will entice this plant out of the live seed (out of the ‘artificial’ seed nothing alive will grow)
Think how something invisible is hidden in the seed.
Concentrate on this “invisible something”.
Ponder how the invisible will become visible. Feel intently as well as think on it. Let it be planted deep into the soul!
An inner force will be felt eventually. A luminous cloud seen. Colors like lilac & blue. The physically invisible reveals itself. (Many cautions) No reverie – sobriety. Control.

I don’t know about you…but I have a powerful hunger…A spiritual hunger…that rattles my bones, stirs my loins, tugs at my belly, pounds in my heart, gets caught in my throat, burns in my eyes, & taps on the top of my head…A hunger for roots, that go back before zero…A hunger to re-member, that life is a dance…pulsing in the bloodlines of a billion native tribes…connecting us all…A hunger for the living proof that rhythm is our mother tongue…A hunger to embrace the Divine within…a hunger for respect, & adoration…for acknowledgment, of our spirit…& so much more, that has been buried in the forgotten beat…burned at the stake…& bought & sold by the media…a hunger to heal…& reclaim the true expression of our essence…A hunger to undertake the hero’s journey, that re-awakens our connection, replacing the hunger, with a taste of our spiritual heritage…Calling the beat back into our primal, yet ever evolving hearts…& so if this rings true for you, let us make this our communal intention…along with each of our personal aspirations which we want to see grow into fullness like the waxing moon…which we have an opportunity to program right here right now…

1756 – Birthday of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
1775 – Birthday of Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling, German-Swiss philosopher. Riddle of Man: German Idealism: Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling, a lecture by Rudolf Steiner “…For Schelling, the world riddle consists in the fact that he sees himself, with his soul awakened to egohood, confronted by a seemingly mute and lifeless nature. Out of this nature the soul awakens. This fact reveals itself to human observation. And the knowing, feeling human spirit delves down into this nature and through this nature fills itself with an inner world that then becomes spiritual life within it. Could this be so if there did not exist between the soul and nature a deeply inward relatedness at first hidden from human cognition? But nature remains mute if the soul does not make itself into the instrument of nature’s speech; nature seems dead if the spirit of man does not free life from the spell of semblance (Schein). The secrets of nature must sound forth from the depths of the human soul. But in order for this not to be a deception, it must be the essential being of nature itself that speaks out of the human soul. And it must be true that the soul only seemingly goes down into its own depths when it knows nature; in actuality, when it wants to find nature, the soul must travel through subconscious passages in order to delve down with its own life into the cycle of nature’s weaving…”

Wow. What a powerful experience we have had together. After our meeting last night, I could do nothing but sit still in my chair and feel the reverberation of our work and the sound of the Foundation Stone meditation. Quite honestly, Angela, Hazel and I did not know what this experience would be like. We could not anticipate that nearly 900 people from all over the world would join us, nor that the space we created online could truly have a deep sense of community. We hope you all feel as inspired as we do to continue this type of work–both deeply spiritual and accessible to all. You can find the recordings here and a link to a community bulletin board here.
If each of you contributed just $10 or $20,can you imagine what we could co-create next time? We could increase our technological capacity with Zoom, we could let more people know about the event, and we could devote even more time and focused work to online events like this one where we can come together through space and time in a beautiful community. Please click here to make a donation! It really, truly helps!
Greetings Friends, on this Chinese New Year of the Rat. –
As you can imagine I am still all aglow from the 2020 Christian Community Winter Youth Conference. My daughter Ultra-Violet & I arrived a day early to meet my dear friend Lori Kulik, who lives in Bethesda (think healing fountain) Maryland (land of Mary). We took a nature walk by the Potomac River; explored Washington National Cathedral; & took a nighttime tour of the memorials, glowing like beacons in the cold dark. And to my hearts delight, the next morning we drove to Alexandria Virginia (think ancient Egypt meets the Virgin) for a tour of the George Washington Masonic National Memorial. This prequel was the perfect foundation for my presentation on Columbia as the Spirit of America.
The 35 young people from all over, many who are veterans of the Summer Camp, created an instant bond thru music & games. Rev. Carol Kelly’s inspired leadership added to & harmonized the youthful enthusiasm. Rev. Paul Newton introduced the theme: THE COURAGE TO LOVE THE WORLD THAT WE’RE IN – WHAT DO YOU LOVE? -WHAT IS IN NEED OF YOUR LOVE?
Anna Silber brought the powerful biography of George Washington Carver. Ultra-Violet Archer taught a song she composed with 4 part harmony that the young people picked up right away. Rev. Kelly’s Close of Day sermons, weaving leading thoughts in with the activities of the day (‘there are no others’) were the perfect spiritual food to take into sleep each night.
Priest in training Samuel Parker was a godsend, driving 1 of the vans (Anna
drove the other) back & forth each day from our lodgings (20 girls in a 3
bedroom with 2 baths!)
Sharing the song Requiem by Eliza Gilkyson, written in response to the tsunami in Indonesia, which took over 260,000 lives, as part of the Sunday service was very powerful. It was heartwarming to see Margaret Dancey; and wonderful to commune with Tina Daub face to face.
Working with biodynamic grounds keeper Michael Judge, the young folks cleaned up the waterways around the Church, where they came across a dead beaver & a discarded handgun, among the usual trash.
Sunday afternoon I shared my offering which was called by many names: ‘Let Freedom Ring’ was the working title; also referred to as ‘Columbia Calls’ or ‘Reclaiming the Wisdom of America’. I began by invoking our dear Richard Dancey, & bringing in the concept of light & warmth as the essential components to our understanding of the Divine, before telling the story of Phillis Wheatley, which led us to George Washington & the American Revolution.
All the while the Being of Columbia was reclaimed as the true colossus She is meant to be in the hearts & minds of us all, calling us to develop our will to Love in Freedom. The art exercise which followed the presentation challenged the young folks to envision their ideal of the Spirit of America. My fav. was the picture of the eagle looking at himself in the reflecting pool only to see that he was a Dove!
Then Ultra-Violet taught them a chant that became an ear-worm for us all:
‘Let the freedom dove fly.
Shout unity to the sky.
Let war & greed die.
Claim justice on high.
Open-Minded. Whole-Hearted. Hands-on-Faith’
The talent show that night was a blast -the MC’s were hilariously brilliant, & everyone’s sharing, a true gift.
On MLK’s Day we were on the road in the bitter cold before dawn. We sang at the Lincoln Memorial as the sun rose, & made our way to Dr. King’s memorial to offer our humble voices in songs of praise. Then we went to an inspiring program at the Folgers Shakespeare Theatre with original poems, & readings of MLK’s letters written while he was in prison. The closing was his ‘I Have a Dream Speech’.
I was blessed to connect with Martha Loving Orgain, who cast mine & Ultra’s natal charts using Astrosophy. I stayed on an extra day with Lori where I was able to explore more of the District of Columbia, including a tour of the Capital Building where the ‘Apotheosis of Washington’ is displayed in the dome of the Rotunda, on the 1st day of the impeachment trial!
My friends, Columbia is in-deed Calling. Will we respond?

25 January 2019 – “Speaking with the Stars”: Is your night sky dark enough for you to see the winter Milky Way? In mid-evening it runs vertically up & across the zenith: from Canis Major low in the southeast, up between Orion & Gemini, through Auriga & Perseus almost straight overhead, & down through Cassiopeia, Cepheus, & Cygnus to the northwest horizon.
Today, the 1st day of the New Moon, is the Chinese New
Year of the Metal (White Gold) Rat, the first zodiac sign in the Chinese zodiac
cycle. According to the ancient tale, in the competition held by the
Jade Emperor to decide the zodiac animals, the quick-witted rat asked the
diligent ox to take him on a ride to cross the river & jumped down before
the ox crossed the finish line, so the rat won the race & became the first
of the zodiac animals.
Rats are resourceful,
& smart, with sharp skills of observation & rich imaginations. And as
the original tale tells, they can take advantage of various opportunities well.
In Chinese
culture, rats represent a thrifty, diligent worker; so people born in the year
of the Rat are often wealthy & prosperous.
Chinese New Year, also known as Lunar New Year or Spring Festival, is China’s most important festival, a celebration that brings a weeklong public holiday.
The Feast of the Conversion of Saint Paul on the road to Damascus. Before this, he was known as Saul, “a Pharisee of Pharisees”, who “intensely persecuted” the followers of Jesus.
The Acts of the Apostles says that Paul was on his way from Jerusalem to Syrian Damascus with a mandate issued by the High Priest to seek out & arrest followers of Jesus, with the intention of returning them to Jerusalem as prisoners for questioning & possible execution. The journey is interrupted when Paul sees a blinding light, & communicates directly with a divine voice.
Acts 9 tells the story as a third-person narrative: As he neared Damascus on his journey, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him. He fell to the ground and heard a voice say to him, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?” “Who are you, Lord?” Saul asked. “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,” he replied. “Now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do.” The men traveling with Saul stood there speechless; they heard the sound but did not see anyone. Saul got up from the ground, but when he opened his eyes he could see nothing. So they led him by the hand into Damascus. For three days he was blind, and did not eat or drink anything. Acts 9:3–9, NIV
Ananias Restoring the Sight of St. Paul (c.1631) by Pietro da Cortona.
The account continues with a description of Ananias of Damascus receiving a divine revelation instructing him to visit Saul at the house of Juda on the Street Called Straight & there lay hands on him to restore his sight. Ananias is initially reluctant, having heard about Saul’s persecution, but obeys the divine command: Then Ananias went to the house and entered it. Placing his hands on Saul, he said, “Brother Saul, the Lord—Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here—has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit.” Immediately, something like scales fell from Saul’s eyes, and he could see again. He got up and was baptized, and after taking some food, he regained his strength. Acts 9:13–19, NIV
Paul on trial before Agrippa (Acts 26), as pictured by Nikolai Bodarevsky, 1875.
Acts’ second telling of Paul’s conversion occurs in a speech Paul gives when he is arrested in Jerusalem.[Acts 22:6-21] Paul addresses the crowd & tells them of his conversion, with a description essentially the same as that in Acts 9.
Acts’ third discussion of Paul’s conversion occurs when Paul addresses King Agrippa, defending himself against the accusations of antinomianism that have been made against him. [Acts 26:12-18] This account is more brief than the others. The speech here is again tailored for its audience, emphasizing what a Roman ruler would understand: the need to obey a heavenly vision,[Acts 26:19] & reassuring Agrippa that Christians were not a secret society.
The conversion of Paul, in spite of his attempts to completely eradicate Christianity, is seen as evidence of the power of Divine Grace: “no fall is so deep that grace cannot descend to it” & “no height so lofty that grace cannot lift the sinner to it.” It also demonstrates “God’s power to use everything, even the hostile persecutor, to achieve the divine purpose.”
The transforming effect of Paul’s conversion influenced the clear antithesis he saw “between righteousness based on the law,” i.e. the letter of the law, which he had sought in his former life; & “righteousness based on the death of Christ,” which he describes, for example, in the Epistle to the Galatians.
Interesting that in rural England, the feast day celebrated on 25 January, functioned much like Groundhog Day does in our modern-day US. With prophecies ranged from fine days predicting good harvests, to clouds & mists signifying pestilence & war in the coming months.
1366 – Deathday of Henry Suso, a German Dominican friar & mystic, the most popular r writer of the 14th century. He is also notable for defending Meister Eckhart’s legacy after Eckhart was condemned for heresy. Suso also studied philosophy in Strasbourg, where he would have come into contact with Meister Eckhart, & Johannes Tauler, both celebrated mystics.
Suso was esteemed as a preacher, in the cities of Swabia, Switzerland, Alsace, & the Netherlands, speaking with individuals of all classes who were drawn to him by his attractive personality, & to whom he became a personal director in the spiritual life.
Suso was reported to have established among the Friends of God a society which he called the Brotherhood of the Eternal Wisdom. The so-called Rule of the Brotherhood of the Eternal Wisdom is a free translation of a chapter of his Horologium Sapientiae, which did not make its appearance until the 15th century. Suso was beatified in 1831 by Pope Gregory XVI.
1586 – Deathday of Lucas Cranach the Younger, German painter.
1742 – Deathday of Edmond Halley, English astronomer, geophysicist, mathematician, meteorologist, & physicist. He was the second Astronomer Royal in Britain.
From an observatory he constructed on Saint Helena, Halley recorded a transit of Mercury across the Sun. He realized a similar transit of Venus could be used to determine the size of the Solar System. He also used his observations to expand contemporary star maps. He aided in proving Isaac Newton‘s laws of motion, & funded the publication of Newton’s influential Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica. From his September 1682 observations, he used the laws of motion to compute the periodicity of Halley’s Comet in his 1705 Synopsis of the Astronomy of Comets. It was named after him upon its predicted return in 1758, which he did not live to see.
Beginning in 1698, he made sailing expeditions & made observations on the conditions of terrestrial magnetism. In 1718, he discovered the proper motion of the “fixed” stars.
1881 – Thomas Edison & Alexander Graham Bell form the Oriental Telephone Company.
1882 – Birthday of Virginia Woolf, English novelist, essayist, short story writer, & critic
1890 – Nellie Bly completes her round-the-world journey in 72 days.

“Now the fact that karma has united a very wide range of different souls in the anthroposophical movement, from such varying antecedents and prior circumstances, makes this movement into a Michael movement in the true sense — a movement which truly renews Christianity. This lies in the karma of the anthroposophical movement. But it also lies in the karma of many individuals who sincerely enter the Anthroposophical Society. It is the particular task of the anthroposophical movement to carry into the world this Michael impetus, which can be grasped and realized more specifically in this way. many signs and reminders of this impetus can still be found here on earth today, for instance when one sees the wonderful play of nature around the ruins of Arthur’s castle. As the centuries pass this impetus must increasingly enter civilization if the latter is not to degenerate entirely.”
~Rudolf Steiner, The Karma of Anthroposophy, Chapter 10, “Christ of the Elements, Christ in the Heart”, Torquay, 21 August, 1924 … focus of the February 5 meeting.

A popular view of karma is cause and effect or tit-for-tat. Karma, however, is so much more complex, interesting, and important. The soul work of karma has to do with the unfolding of our individuality through the elements, through the ethers, and very much through relationships.
Rudolf Steiner named his core mission as bringing karma and reincarnation to the West; his teachings deserve interpretation and practical enlivening. The Central Regional Council has been exploring this theme for many months. Anthroposophic Psychology gives a unique contribution to the soul work of karma. For this conference the CRC is partnering with the Association for Anthroposophic Psychology (AAP of North America) to present ideas and experiences concerning karma—and how it impacts upon personal psychology.

~Vitae Sophia~ A Whitsun Festival of United Soul Endeavor
Eurythmy: AUM = A – I stand for myself, U- I stand for humanity, M – I stand for Life
Social Sculpture: Steiner’s ‘Blue Dot Exercise’- Through Art, the bridge between science & spirit, we warm the ‘I’, to open the heart, in support of healthy community.
What are my gifts-What are my tools? How can I place them in right relationship within the social realm? How can I hone them to strengthen and enhance the world?
Enter the Labyrinth of Vitae Sophia – Human hearts, once warmed, can rise up to meet the source of wisdom, like flowers turning toward the sun.
Living into the Foundation Stone of Love – How can we take our individual Inner Whitsun & expand it, into what Steiner calls the “World Festival of Knowledge” a path leading from ‘Sprit Recollection’, to ‘Sprit Sensing’, to ‘Sprit Beholding’?
Hazel Archer-Ginsberg – Founder of Reverse Ritual Understanding Anthroposophy through the Rhythms of the Year. Essayist, Lecturer, Poet, Trans-denominational Minister, ‘Anthroposopher’, working as the Festivals Coordinator & Council Member of the Chicago Rudolf Steiner Branch, The Traveling Speakers Program, & the Central Regional Council of the Anthroposophical Society.
The Sun of mid-winter draws in its breath, at this time of deepest darkness.
Soon we will be entering into the Longest Night, entering into the Birth of Light.
Let us live into the darkness of the space between the stars & planets – the dark of the sea -the dark of the womb – & the promise of the tomb.
Wrap this darkness gently about you like a comforter. Float gently now in its soft depths. Grow here, nourished by an invisible cord that connects you to the Source of all life – Floating gently in the dark -Softly rocking in the dark…
And though it is dark, we
realize that what surrounds us is not empty, but, like the womb, full of life.
Take a breath & sense the swirling, nurturing energy of the dark.
And now, as the energy increases, imagine how it will give birth to the smallest spark conceivable, the spark of new life. See that spark as it glows, watch that spark, watch as it grows. Glowing brighter & brighter, it fans into flame. And as you look at this flame, its light fills you with warmth, with love.
Amy Dixon
And as you feel increased
love & warmth within you, the intensity of the flame slowly diminishes &
as it does, in its place, slowly becoming visible, is the outline of a present.
This gift becomes more solid, until you can see its form clearly, wrapped in a
glistening filament of light.
This gift has your name on it, inscribed in the glimmering material. Is your name written in a special color? Is the inscription special in any other way?
Examine your present more closely. What shape is it? How big is it? What color is the wrapping? Pick it up: is it light? heavy? What do you want it to be?
And now – unwrap your
gift. How easy, or difficult is it to unwrap? Finish opening it – & receive
your gift. What is it?
Look at it carefully. Experience it fully. Accept it. Accept your gift with joy. Feel your heart warm with the love with which this gift is given to you – Given to you every year at this time.
Jenifer Borme
And now, from your heart, send out gratitude for this gift; send out thanks for this gift; send it out like light, like a holy beacon back to Our Great Mother, back to the Universe: both the dark & the light. Send out your thanks for this gift.
Sk Picmia
Now, if you wish, find a place to keep this gift, a place to put this present, so that it is always on hand; so you can open it whenever you need to remember that the light is born from the darkness. An inspiration & reminder of these words by Rudolf Steiner:
My eager heart aspires To be a torch to bear the Spirit’s light Into the dark night of a wintry world Blessing and blest. Bright shoots of soul Shall be sunk in the gardenbed of the world. Shining from the sensual dark, Inner meaning — the Word — resounds through all Reality.

19 December 2019 – “Speaking with the Stars”: Venus gleams in the southwestern sky after sunset. The brilliant goddess of Love stands out just a half hour after sunset, when it appears above the horizon, & remains on display until 6 pm. She is by far the brightest celestial object in the evening sky, residing in far western Capricornus, having crossed the border earlier today from Sagittarius.
Looking at the
past to see the present, co-creating the future:
“History, historical life, will only be seen in the right light when a true consciousness of the connection of the so-called living with the so-called dead can be developed” ~Rudolf Steiner – The Living and the Dead
Gilbert Walfert
According to Rudolf Steiner’s spiritual research, today is the Birthday of Abraham interestingly regarded as the father of the faithful by all 3 monotheistic religions: Judaism, Christianity, & Islam
Birthday of Lot, nephew of Abraham
Also celebrated today: O Radix Jesse O Radix Jesse, qui stas in signum populorum, super quem continebunt reges os suum, quem Gentes deprecabuntur: veni ad liberandum nos, jam noli tardare.
O Root of Jesse, standing as a sign among the peoples; before you kings will shut their mouths, to you the nations will make their prayer: Come and deliver us, and delay no longer.
Isaiah had prophesied: “A shoot shall come out from the stock of
Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots.” Isaiah 11:1
“On that day the root
of Jesse shall stand as a signal to the peoples; the nations shall inquire of
him, and his dwelling shall be glorious.” Isaiah 11:10
Jesse was the father of King David, & Micah had prophesied that the Messiah would be of the house and lineage of David and be born in David’s city, Bethlehem (Micah 5:2). Also compare Isaiah 45:14, Isaiah 52:15 & Romans 15:12
150 – Deathday of Clement
of Alexandria. His parents were educated pagans, having rejected paganism
as a young man due to its perceived moral corruption, he travelled in Greece,
Asia Minor, Palestine & Egypt. In his Protrepticus
he displays an extensive knowledge of
Greek mythology & mystery religions, which could only have arisen from
the practice of his family’s religion. In Greece, he encountered the Ionian
theologian, Athenagoras of Athens;
while in the east, he was taught by the Assyrian, Tatian, & a Jew, Theophilus
of Caesarea. In around 180, Clement reached Alexandria, where he met Pantaenus, who taught at the
Catechetical School of Alexandria. Clement studied under Pantaenus, & was
ordained to the priesthood by Pope Julian before 189.
As his three major works demonstrate, Clement was influenced by
Hellenistic philosophy to a greater extent than any other Christian thinker of
his time, & in particular by Plato
& the Stoics. His secret works, which exist only in
fragments, suggest that he was also familiar with pre-Christian Jewish esotericism & Gnosticism. In one of his works he argued that Greek philosophy had
its origin among non-Greeks, claiming that both Plato & Pythagoras were
taught by Egyptian scholars. Among his pupils were Origen & Alexander of
Jerusalem.
Clement is regarded as a Church Father & is venerated as a saint in Coptic Christianity, Ethiopian Christianity & Anglicanism
1776 – Thomas Paine publishes a series of
pamphlets in The Pennsylvania Journal entitled “The American Crisis“. The first was released during a time
when the Revolution was still viewed as an unsteady prospect. The opening lines
are as follows: “These are the times that try men’s souls: The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink
from the service of his country; but he that stands it now, deserves the love
and thanks of man and woman”.
The pamphlet,
read aloud to the Continental Army on December 23, 1776, three days before the
Battle of Trenton, attempted to bolster morale as well as shame neutrals &
loyalists toward the cause: “Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered;
yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more
glorious the triumph”.
Along with the
patriotic nature of The American Crisis, it displayed Paine’s strong deist
beliefs, inciting the laity with suggestions that the British are trying to
assume powers that only God should have. Paine states that he believes God
supports the American people, “that
God Almighty will not give up a people to military destruction, or leave them
unsupportedly to perish, who have so earnestly and so repeatedly sought to
avoid the calamities of war, by every decent method which wisdom could invent“.
1848 – Deathday
of Emily Brontë, English novelist &
poet
1907 – 239 coal
miners die in the Darr Mine Disaster
in Jacobs Creek, Pennsylvania
1932 – BBC World Service begins broadcasting as the BBC Empire Service
1941 –Adolf Hitler appoints himself as head of the Oberkommando des Heeres
1974 – Nelson Rockefeller is sworn in as Vice President of the United States under President Gerald Ford under the provisions of the 25th Amendment to the United States Constitution

ON-GOING:
Community Study – Wednesdays at 9:30 am – 11 am at the Branch – Working with Rudolf Steiner’s Karmic Relationships Vol 4
‘Anthroposophy’, which means Wisdom of the Human Being is a ‘Spiritual Science’ built on the research of Rudolf Steiner. Our current conversation explores: the riddles of existence, the truth of karma, the mystery of evil, historic connections, life after death and more. We incorporate ‘The Calendar of the Soul’, eurythmy, focused discussion and seasonal artistic explorations in our study.
Dear friends – When all seems dead & barren on the face of the Earth, below the surface, the inner life is strengthened…& if we can let go of the false hustle & bustle imposed on us from without, & sit in the stillness of the darkness, where the heart-beat can be heard, There we will find the inner strength to let go of our fear of the dark. To let our eyes adjust to the dark. And soon we will see quite clearly in the dark. And then we can begin the work of Re-Patterning & opening to the inspiration of our Immaculate Conception – our pure thought, which creates the new paradigm…
Energizing Hope for the Sun’s return & the Earth’s renewal we make a ‘spiritual manger’ – a sacred space – in the cold black frozen places, that seem devoid of life, but are really just a sterilized palate – a clean slate, fresh & ready for the newly conceived light to be born into & fill…
Ilian Rachov
At Advent, All our souls are pregnant with the possibility of giving birth to the light within. Wisdom fills us with this possibility that we may birth the Being of Love. This pure light is a becoming, it becomes, a rainbow, in us: shining with the colors of hope, truth & goodness; radiant with the hues of integrity, beauty & virtue, which overflow as joyous praise. In growing this rainbow within, we become, enlightened, with Good Will, bringing the power of Peace to bear in the world.

ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY
Ossawa Tanner
Feast day of Lazarus – The biblical narrative of the raising of Lazarus is found in chapter 11 of the Gospel of John. Lazarus is introduced as a follower of Jesus, who lives in the town of Bethany near Jerusalem, the brother of Mary & Martha. The sisters send word to Jesus that Lazarus, “he whom thou lovest,” is ill. Instead of immediately traveling to Bethany, Jesus intentionally remains where he is for two more days before beginning the journey.
When Jesus arrives in Bethany, he finds that Lazarus is dead & has already been in his tomb for four days. He meets first with Martha & then Mary in turn. Martha laments that Jesus did not arrive soon enough to heal her brother & Jesus replies with the well-known statement, “I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die“. Later the narrator here gives the famous simple phrase, “Jesus wept“.
In the presence of a crowd of mourners, Jesus comes to the tomb.
Over the objections of Martha, Jesus has them roll the stone away from the
entrance to the tomb & says a prayer. He then calls Lazarus to come out
(“Come forth”) & Lazarus does so, still wrapped in his
grave-cloths. Jesus then calls for someone to remove the grave-cloths, &
let him go.
The narrative ends with the statement that many of the witnesses
to this event “believed in him.” Others are said to report the events
to the religious authorities in Jerusalem.
The Gospel of John mentions Lazarus again in chapter 12. Six days
before the Passover on which Jesus is crucified, Jesus returns to Bethany &
Lazarus attends a supper that Martha, his sister, serves. Jesus & Lazarus
together attract the attention of many & the chief priests consider having
Lazarus put to death because so many people are believing in Jesus on account
of this miracle.
The miracle of the raising of Lazarus, the longest coherent
narrative in John aside from the Passion, is the culmination of John’s
“signs”. It explains the crowds seeking Jesus on Palm Sunday, &
leads directly to the decision of Caiaphas & the Sanhedrin to kill Jesus.
It is notable that at John 11:11, after being told by His disciples to fear those who would kill Him, & after the parable about living in darkness, Jesus references his own parable & states that Lazarus sleeps, & that He will go “wake him up”. The disciples thought Jesus meant Lazarus was actually sleeping in verse 12. Then, in verse 14, Jesus speaks plainly & tells them that “Lazarus has died”. This is to be clear that Lazarus has died in the flesh, & is not sleeping or unconscious.
OLYMPUS Cameron
Lazarus is spoken of by Rudolf Steiner as becoming John, the disciple whom Jesus loved, & formerly as Hiram Abiff the Master Builder of Solomon’s Temple & Christian Rosenkreutz.

– Birthday of Eleanor Charlotte Merry, an English poet, artist, musician
& anthroposophist with a strong
Celtic impulse & interest in esoteric wisdom. She studied in Vienna &
met Rudolf Steiner in 1922 after becoming interested in his teachings. She
went on to organize Summer Schools where Steiner gave lectures, & was
secretary for the World Conference on Spiritual Science in London in 1928
Eleanor Charlotte Kynaston grew up in a liberal educational
environment, her father being the well known classical scholar & professor
of Ancient Greek, Herbert Snow aka
Kynaston. It was only at the age of
13 that she began to attend a regular school. This was also when she began
to take a passionate interest in music. Two years later, her father became Deacon of Durham, so Eleanor grew up
close to the beautiful cathedral. She was able to read the manuscripts that
were kept in the monastic library, walking up & down amongst the Norman
columns of the cathedral & experienced something of a real, concrete
history, something completely different from what she read in her schoolbooks.
It was the myths & legends that
captivated her, & she learned by heart Tennyson’s King Arthur.
The
stream of scholars & theologians that entered their house fed her spiritual
longings.
As she grew up, she sought a career as singer, wanting to study
music & art. At 19, she left home for a course of study in Vienna, which
led not only to a fine command of the German language & development of her
musical skills but also placed her in a kind of artistic-aesthetic inner
crisis. Soon after her return to England, she married the well-known Oxford
surgeon Merry, to whose professional commitments Eleanor Merry was to devote
much of her energy besides the rearing of their son & daughter.
She learnt about Theosophy at the beginning of World War I when a
copy of the “Secret Doctrine”
of H.P. Blavatsky was sent her by persons unknown. As she read it, she felt
as if guided by some unseen hand, & studied further works of Annie Besant & other Theosophists.
After the war, she was made aware of Rudolf
Steiner’s Knowledge of the Higher Worlds. In January 1922 she met Daniel Nicol Dunlop in London for the
first time. He was reading a lecture of Rudolf
Steiner’s to the anthroposophical group there. A few months later, her
husband died of pneumonia, after which she had her first personal conversation
with DN Dunlop. Dunlop was still fired up with gratitude over his meeting with
Rudolf Steiner some few weeks previously.
She took part in the conference “Spiritual Values in Education” in Oxford that August, where
she met Rudolf Steiner personally for the first time. She saw him first in a corridor & by his gait & the manner in
which he looked at her, she had the impression: “He knows where he is
going.”
She assisted D.N. Dunlop in the preparation of the subsequent Summer School in Penmaenmawr the
following year, where a further conversation with Rudolf Steiner took place in
which he recommended to her the new techniques in painting that had been
developed under his guidance. She was soon exhibiting publicly in London&
elsewhere. He also advised her to form as strong a bond as possible with
Dunlop. This summer school, devoted to
the theme “The Evolution of Consciousness” was felt by Steiner to be
a milestone in the development of the anthroposophical movement.
Eleanor
was present at the founding of the new General Anthroposophical Society at the
Goetheanum in Dornach, Switzerland around New Year 1923/24.
The theme of the ensuing Summer
School at Torquay in 1924, “True and False Paths in Spiritual
Investigation” (GA 243), stemmed from a conversation she had with Rudolf
Steiner on this occasion.
In her further work in Britain after Rudolf Steiner’s death, she
wholeheartedly supported D.N. Dunlop’s efforts to create an open, inclusive &
at the same time spiritually founded continuation of the anthroposophical work.
She acted as secretary of the
anthroposophical World Conference in London of 1928 &wrote a play around
the figure of King Arthur for the youth conference initiated by David Clement
in Glastonbury in 1932. More immediately than anyone, she experienced the dramatic events affecting Daniel Dunlop between
1929, when he became General Secretary of the Anthroposophical Society in Great
Britain & the spring of 1935, when he was expelled from the General
Anthroposophical Society & died a short while later. After his death,
she maintained intimate friendships with her half-sister, Marna Pease, Walter Johannes Stein & particularly Eugen Kolisko, whom
she helped to build up the School for Spiritual Science, wrote numerous
articles for their magazine “The
Modern Mystic“, & wrote down the biographical notes Kolisko
dictated to her. In the 1940s she led a
painting school together with Maria Schindler as well as working with her on
the book Pure Colour (1946), leading to large public exhibitions.
Eleanor Charlotte Merry died on 16. June 1956 in Frinton-on-Sea, Essex.
