Dear friends – Today is January 20th 2021 – Inauguration day. Many folks are holding fear around displays of violence, apes ponding their chests & the like. Of course it’s our job to create peaceful thought-forms that counteract these fearful imaginations. In a conversation yesterday about the state of the world, a friend used the term: Entre chien et loup which is a French idiom that literally means ‘between dog & wolf.’ It’s used to describe twilight or dusk, when the light is tricky & it’s tough to distinguish between a dog & a wolf. But it may also suggest a situation that is a blend of the familiar & the unknown, or even a moment when what’s ordinary & routine becomes unruly or wild. Entre chien et loup suggests an intermediary state that’s unpredictable or beyond our ability to define. This seems to be one of the main themes for us right now.

I often marvel at how varied the canine species can be dogs all shapes & sizes – & they all have their origins in the wolf. In my neighborhood right in the middle of the city of Chicago we see coyote. This is always a thrill for me. Can we embrace the wild, the unpredictable, the un-tame? For that liminal place holds the potential for change. And as we know the loyal dog can also bite. But it can also be lazy. They say: ‘You can’t teach an old dog new tricks’. Maybe that’s why we also need the wolf.

To fear the wolf is to miss the opportunity to tap into its essence, which can be turned to the good. Many conservationists say reintroducing the wolf into the wild brings a better balance to the ecosystem. If we try to suppress these impulses they just come out sideways, & we get the wolf in sheep’s clothing, which in my thinking is much more lethal. How can we let the howl of the wolf alert us to the fact that the checks & balances are needing adjustment. How can the howl be heard, so that the call for freedom can be transformed from an unconscious selfish impulse where the pack runs in for the kill; channeled instead into a call for a true freedom which serves the good of all.

Inspired by Playing with Paradox, a mask workshop at the Stourbridge Glasshouse College with Michael Chase, working with the planetary archetypes. The words the planets speak (in italics), were used ‘to charge’ the actors to prepare them to play in the planetary masks (except for the sun, who we didn’t work with).
This planetary order of the ancient Greek Mysteries (that has still been used by Rudolf Steiner) was only changed at the time of Copernicus. In it the ♀ & ♂ planets, Venus & Mars, have a mirrored relationship either side of the sun.

Dear friends –

I put out a call to see if anyone was interested in being part of a presentation around the True Spirit of America, & I thank you for your responses!

Sharleen Leonard encouraged us to join “The People’s Inauguration Jan. 21 -31 and then continue the conversation from the spiritual science perspective and Steiner’s Threefold Community insights”.

Anyone who knows me or has read my sharing’s knows I don’t endorse either one of the political parties here in America. I believe the 2-party-system is fundamentally flawed.

I am a 3-fold champion thru & thru. For me it’s about freedom of choice, so if anything, I vote Green Party. And I don’t mix politics with Anthroposophy, I work from the Cultural Life of the 3-fold social order. That being said, I decided to partner up with The People’s Inauguration because of their positive attitude about empowering the people to stand up & take responsibility as citizens of this world.

On the web site it says: Only we can bring our communities together, tend our wounds, and begin the labor of reckoning, reimagining and remaking our nation block-by-block, heart-to-heart.

We need healing, justice, and renewal. Let’s create a moral vision for the America we could be.

January 21st kicks off 10 days of virtual conversations, artistic expressions, music performances, teach-ins, vigils and around-the-table family ceremonies. Some events will focus on grief and healing; others on justice and reckoning, others on joy and rising. All of them will have one thing in common: the expression of a “people’s oath” that recommits us to our core values and to one another.

Will you join us?

Now I am not someone who likes to repeat after someone else. Nor would I ask anyone to take a vow outside of what they create for themselves. But I do think it is a good idea to think about what it is that we as individuals feel is important to stand for. I see what they have proposed as a template, a way to get us started in thinking about what we want our world to be like, & what We the People are going to personally do to go about making it happen.

I then got a phone call from a long time nemis who does not on the whole attend my presentations, who has his own very definite political views, who proceeded to tell me that this was an unholy match; that politics don’t belong in the Anthroposophical Society, & that the organization I am affiliating myself with espouses beliefs that he finds offensive.

I thanked him for his feedback, but was quite shaken. And then I remembered that when I 1^st came to the Chicago Branch many years ago, I brought forth the idea of doing a July 4^th Festival, with the theme of Columbia as the Spirit of America, & I was told no, it could not be done, & it never was.

And then out of the blue I found this quote from Rudolf Steiner: ‘There are still many Anthroposophists who think that something may be reached by argument with the opponent. Nothing can do us more harm than success in setting forth our truths in the form of argument; for people do not hate us because we say something that is not true, but because we say the truth. And the more we succeed in proving that we say the truth, the more they will hate us. Of course this cannot prevent us from stating the truth. But it can prevent us from being so naïve as to think that it is possible to progress by argument.

Only positive work enables us to progress; and of course truth should be represented as strongly as possible, so as to attract as many pre-destined souls as possible, for these are far more numerous in the present time than is generally assumed. COVID-19 Return to Work Hygiene: Wash Your Hands

We now again, in our own period, encounter hygienic measures such as are given to humanity but in our time, for materialistic reasons. Here we see a repetition of what was lost at a corresponding period in Egypt. The fulfilment of what happened earlier is represented in the general karma in a most remarkable manner. In ancient Egypt the laws of cleanliness were laws of Divine revelation. The Egyptian believed that he was fulfilling his duty to humanity by caring for his particular cleanliness at every opportunity. This preoccupation for cleanliness comes to the fore again today, but under the influence of a mentality which is entirely materialistic. Modern man does not think that he is serving the gods when he is obeying such rules, but that he is serving himself. It is nevertheless a reappearance of what went before.

Thus all things are in a certain way cyclically fulfilled. If at a certain period people were not able to conceive certain measures against epidemics, these were times at which men could not do so because, according to the general wise world plan, the epidemics had to take effect in order to give human souls an opportunity of balancing what had been effected through the ahrimanic influence and certain earlier luciferic influences. If other conditions are now being brought about, these too are subject to certain great karmic laws. So we see that these matters cannot be regarded superficially.

How does this agree with our statement that if someone seeks an opportunity of being infected in an epidemic, this is the result of the necessary reaction against an earlier karmic cause. Have we the right now to take hygienic or other measures?

This is a profound question, and we must begin by collecting the necessary material for replying to it. We must understand that where the luciferic and ahrimanic principles are co-operating, whether concurrently or over longer periods, or where they are working against each other, there are manifested certain complications in human life. These complications appear under forms so diverse that we never see two identical cases. If we study human life, however, we shall find our way in the following manner: if in a particular case we try to discover the combined activity of Lucifer and Ahriman, we shall always find a thread by which this connection will become clear. We must discriminate clearly between internal and external man. We must examine the continuity in which karma is accomplished, and we must at the same time understand that we have still the possibility of influencing our inner being by means of certain karmic influences, so that in future a new karmic compensation may be prepared by the inner being.

It may well happen that we, following for a time a downward grade, beget evil. We at first descend in order to develop the contrary impetus that will cause us to re-ascend. Let us suppose that a being, by yielding to certain influences, tends towards uncharitableness. This uncharitableness will in a later life appear as karmic result, and will develop inner forces in his organism.

We can then act in two ways — consciously, or else unconsciously. In our epoch we have not progressed so far as to do it consciously. With such a person we can take precautions by which these characteristics in his organism, derived from uncharitableness, will be driven out and we may act in such a way that the effect that is expressed in the external organism as a lack of charity will be counteracted. By these means, however, the soul will not be cleansed of all uncharitableness, but only the external organ of uncharitableness will have been expelled. For if we do nothing further, we shall have accomplished only half of our task, perhaps even nothing at all, or we may even do harm. We may perhaps have helped this person physically, externally, but we shall not have given succour to his soul. Now that the physical expression of uncharitableness has been removed he will not be able to give expression to this uncharitableness, but he will have to retain it within his inner organism until a future incarnation.

Let us suppose that a great number of people, because of uncharitableness, had been impelled to absorb certain infectious germs, so that they succumbed to an epidemic. Let us further suppose we were in a position to protect them from this epidemic. We should in such a case preserve the physical body from the effects of uncharitableness, but by doing this we have not removed the inner tendency towards uncharitableness.

If we want to bring a true healing, we must also undertake the duty of influencing the soul in such a way as to remove from it the tendency towards a lack of charity, or the disease will go deeper into the soul.

The organic expression of uncharitableness is killed in the external bodily sense for instance by vaccination against smallpox, but the soul continues to be sick. In one period of civilisation, when there prevailed a general tendency to develop a higher degree of egotism, and uncharitableness, an epidemic made its appearance. Such is the fact investigated by Spiritual Science. In anthroposophy it is our bounded duty to give expression to the truth.

Now it will be clear why in our time the desire for the protection of vaccination appeared. We also understand why, among the best minds of our time, there also exists a kind of aversion to vaccination. This aversion corresponds to something within, and is the external expression of an inner reality, that seeks to karmicly rid itself of the cause of the disease.

So if on the one hand we destroy the physical expression of a previous fault, we should, on the other hand, undertake the duty of transforming the materialistic character of such a person by means of a corresponding spiritual education. This would constitute the indispensable counterpart without which we are performing only half our task. We are merely accomplishing something to which the person in question will himself have to produce a counterpart in a later incarnation. If we destroy the susceptibility to smallpox, for instance, we are concentrating only on the external side of karmic activity.

If on the one side we go in for hygiene, it is necessary that on the other we should feel it our duty to contribute to the person whose organism has been so transformed, something also for the good of his soul. Vaccination will not be harmful if, subsequent to vaccination, the person receives a spiritual education. But if we concentrate upon one side only and lay no emphasis upon the other, we weigh down the balance unevenly. We see how essential it is that we should not undertake one task without the other.

Here we approach an important law of human evolution which acts so that the external and the internal must always be counter-balanced, and that it is not permissible to act with regard to the one only, leaving the other out of consideration. We here get a glimpse of an important relationship, and yet we have not even arrived at the significance of the question: ‘What is the relationship between hygiene and karma?’ As we shall see, the answer to this question will lead us still further into the depths of karma, and we shall further see that there exist karmic relationships between man’s birth and death. Greetings friends – For those that have been following our journey thru the Holy Nights, today is the penultimate, the 11th Holy Night, bringing us to the Constellation of Taurus, the Bull (ruling the neck & throat, the larynx & speech )

Congratulations Dear Holy Nights traveler – you have made it beyond the threshold – past the 9 Angelic realms, into the Sphere of the Holy Spirit! It may seem odd at 1st that this Divine Realm is represented by what appears to be such an ‘earthly’ image – Taurus the Bull!? But we only need to contemplate the image of the sacred cow, with its potent digestive activity which is vast, like the universe – & trace this imagination into the astral cosmos, remembering that in the spiritual world everything is reversed – to reveal its true form – And so the cow or bull becomes the dove! Rudolf Steiner encourages us to also see the reverse: that what is astral in the Dove, becomes physical in the cow or bull.

Our ancestors of ancient India, Egypt, Babylon, Greece & Asia Minor, knew this, & made the cow sacred – revealing the significance of the cult of the bull or calf. The occult knowledge of this connection can be seen in Egypt, for instance, in depictions of the Sun-god Ra in the aspect of a falcon, bearing on its head a solar disc, sitting between the 2 horns of the heavenly cow; or in Babylon, with its images of the winded bulls (Shedu).

From Spiritual Science we know that the principle of the Holy Spirit works thru the sphere of the Moon, & the Son-principle works thru the sphere of the Sun. So the bull reflecting the activity of the Holy Spirit is connected to the Moon gods & goddeses – like the Sumerian Moon-god, pictured with the body of a bull.

In the Mysteries of ancient Egypt, the image of Isis arose out of the union in the lunar sphere of 2 cosmic streams coming from the heavenly regions of the Virgin (the constellation of Virgo) & the Bull (Taurus). When the influence of Virgo prevailed, then the image of Isis, usually seen holding her son Horus, out-pictured the energies of the Divine Sophia or World-Soul (a more lunar aspect), a pre-figuring of The Virgin Mary. But if the Bull prevailed, Isis was depicted with the Sun disc between the bull’s horns, showing her connection with the World-Spirit (or Sun aspect). Isis is later depicted wearing the Throne on her crown – after the death of Osiris.

The relationship of Isis with Osiris, a pre-figuring of The Christ, further indicates the transition from the Lunar Logos to the Solar Logos, which corresponds to the shift from the 3rd to the 4th cultural epoch, when The Christ is born on earth.

It’s important to note that earlier in evolution, during a time that Spiritual Science names as ‘Old Moon’, the Luciferic principle chose not to evolve to the Sun-Sphere, but wanted egoistically to remain behind in the Moon Sphere, yet cut off from the true Holy Spirit. We see this debased, Luciferic representation of the Holy Spirit, which does not seek to find The Logos, in the time of Moses, as the cult of the Golden Calf

At the baptism in the Jordan, it is the Holy Spirit which enables the descent of Christ, to be ‘born’ into the Sun-Soul of Nathan, in the body of Jesus. The Holy Spirit, emanating from the region of the Bull, was seen by John the Baptist thru the agency of his angel, in the form of a Dove above the head of Jesus. (John 1:32-34) Where John the Baptist gives this testimony: “I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him. The one who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will go on to baptize with the Holy Spirit.’ I have seen and I testify that this is God’s Chosen One.”

There is another significant aspect which connects the influence from the region of the Bull, which rules the larynx, giving us the gift of speech, with the future working of the Holy Spirit. Speech connects us with others in a loving marriage of souls, & Rudolf Steiner takes this metaphor even further to say that the Larynx will one day not only speak forth words, but will become a creative organ, a higher version of the organs of reproduction! Here’s a quote from Dr. Steiner: “…we must understand that the larynx in its full transformation, when the human being has become chaste again, will turn like a flower to the spiritual Sun. The calyx of the flower, when the larynx is pure, becomes a chaste chalice, ready to be fructified by the Spirit, to be offered to the ‘Holy Lance of Love’. This is a symbol of the Holy Grail, its highest Ideal” (GA 98 May 11, 1907)

May we begin this transformation of our speech NOW, in order to bring to birth the Spirit of Christ, as a moral creative force, within our human soul. This will fructify the soul of our communities (Think Whitsun), & pollinate the Soul of the Earth.

Freed thru the working of the Christ-Impulse in the soul of humanity, the Luciferic principle will turn from being adversarial, to becoming the servant of the redeemed Holy Spirit, The New Isis-Sophia.

May we ride the Bull in full consciousness, in peace, & we can do this by practicing the Virtue: Equilibrium becomes progress. I know, it’s not always easy to stay in balance when riding the bull in this crazy jacked up world. but It helps to live into the picture of the dove of peace.

And I have also been working closely with this quote from ‘The Search for the New Isis’ a lecture Rudolf Steiner gave on Christmas eve in 1920, where we hear: ‘Wisdom is the precondition of love; and love is wisdom reborn in the human I.”

Yay, we can’t know what love is without the wisdom of understanding, & we can’t know true wisdom without warming with love our understanding, in our highest self. Steiner goes on to say:

“We must realize that through the force of the Christ we must find an inner astronomy that will show us again the cosmos moving and working by the power of the spirit. When we have this insight into the cosmos that is awakened through the newfound Isis power of the Christ — which is now the power of the Divine Sophia — then Christ, united with the Earth since the Mystery of Golgotha, will become active within us, because then we shall know him. It is not the Christ that we lack; what we lack is the knowledge and wisdom of Isis, the Sophia of the Christ…Human beings today must realize that for Christ to appear to them they must first seek Isis-Mary-Sophia.”

And so taking that into our thinking, I will end with this poem by Alice O Howell:
O Holy Sophia, Holy Wisdom, Holy Joy, hidden for so long
Come forth and reveal yourself in the world and in our souls!
Help us to see with a loving eye
Help us to hear with wit and intuition
Show us how to be natural and kind
Show us how to find ourselves in one another
Lead us from who we think we are to who we really are.
Let us learn from the flowers that we need not strive so hard.
Teach us to allow that Light from within
To unfold us, as a gift, like your lily, or the Rose.

Greetings Friends – I confess, I am an early riser. I wake up around 4:30 am every morning, & pay attention to what lingers from night school. We know that especially during the 13 Holy Nights our dreams & impressions especially in that hypnogogic state between waking & sleeping are particularly potent. And today I woke up with this quote from Meister Eckhart in my mind: “We are all meant to be mothers of God, for God is always needing to be born.” Hmmm such a blessing to ponder.

Then I get an email about the Greek Old testament Book of Wisdom (7: 11-12) with this quote: In her coming all good things came to me,

Getting to work I discover that TODAY – According to Rudolf Steiner’s original Calendar of the Soul, is the birthday of Enoch – Descendant of Cain, who came up in relation to the feast day of his brother Abel yesterday. In addition to an appearance in the Book of Genesis, Enoch is the subject of many Jewish & Christian writings. Enoch was the son of Jared (Genesis 5:19–21), the father of Methuselah, & the great-grandfather of Noah. The Bible says that Enoch lived 365 years before he was taken up by God. The text reads that Enoch “walked with God: and he was no more; for God took him” (Gen 5:21–24)

He was called ‘Enoch the scribe of judgment’, & was considered the author of the Book of Enoch, which recounts how he was taken up to Heaven & was appointed guardian of all the celestial treasures – chief of the archangels, & the immediate attendant of God’s Throne, where he was taught all the secret mysteries &, with the angels at his back, fulfills of his own accord whatever comes out of the mouth of God.

Various esoteric writings identify Enoch as Metatron, the archangel which communicates God’s word. Enoch was seen, by this literature, & the kabbala of Jewish mysticism, as having been the one which communicated God’s revelation to Moses, in particular. An interesting thing to contemplate in these pre-dawn hours.

Today is also said to be the feast day of the prophet Daniel – whose Hebrew name means: “God is my Judge“- He was the bible hero who interprets dreams & receives apocalyptic visions. The Book of Daniel begins with an introduction telling how Daniel & his companions came to be in Babylon. Then it gives a set of tales set in the Babylonian & Persian courts, followed by a set of visions in which Daniel sees the remote future of the world.

Maybe you remember the famous story of how Daniel & his 3 friends Shadrach, Meshach, & Abednego were among the young Jewish nobility carried off to Babylon following the city’s capture by Nebuchadnezzar. The four are chosen for their intellect & beauty to be trained in the Babylonian court.

But Daniel & his friends refuse to eat the non-kosher food & this is seen as an affront to the king, so they were thrown into a lion’s den & then a fiery furnace. I grew up with that tale. I think there was a bible song around this theme. ‘God sent an angel to the lion’s den & he shut the lion’s mouth’. I forgot the part about the fiery furnace, but anyway, you get the idea. It is quite a powerful imagination especially for a kid.

Today, dear friends it is also the Feast day of Caspar, no not the friendly ghost – the youngest of the Magi, King of Tarsus. His gift was myrrh, which is used in making medicines. This symbolizes The Christ as healer & great physician.

And for those who have been living into the 13 Holy Nights, Tonight is 10th Holy Night ruled by the Constellation of Gemini, the Twins (out-pictured in the human body in the lungs, arms, & shoulders) This is the Sphere of the Seraphim, the Spirits of Love. We are up there folks, the top of the 1^st & highest hierarchy.

The ceaseless yearning of the Seraphim for the sphere of the Holy Spirit above them brings the impetus of Universal Love, which begets the will to sacrifice. An earthly reflection of this macrocosmic impulse of love can be seen in the ancient Greek myth of the Twin Brothers Castor & Pollux – where the immortal twin is willing to sacrifice himself for his brother.

In the Christian era, after the Christ-Impulse enters into earthly evolution, love truly becomes universal, going beyond the love founded on blood-ties. In John 15: 12-14 we hear: ‘Love one another as I have loved you. There is no greater love than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do this the highest commandment.’

The Spiritual Love that Christ arouses, is the fulfilment of the fundamental principle of all true Christian Mysteries – ‘Not me but Christ in me’. We see this Universal Love in the being of the Nathan Soul, living in the Jesus of the Luke Gospel, who sacrificed himself 4 times in the pre-earthly deeds, & then to become the vessel of Christ.

We see it in the Mary of the Luke Gospel, who united with the Mary of the Matthew Gospel, allowing the Divine Sophia to enter the earthly realm.

We see it in the willing of Zarathustra, who incarnated as the Jesus of the Matthew Gospel, & sacrificed himself to allow the Christ to descend at the Baptism. In ancient Persia, during the last age of Gemini, Zarathustra was a great Magi, able to foretell the coming of Christ, who he saw as Ahura Mazdao. This vision gave him the impulse to sacrifice himself in his coming lives in order to prepare for it. Since ‘The turning point of time’, the individuality of Zarathustra has incarnated again & again as ‘Master Jesus’ – & is one of the circle of 12 Bodhisattvas who inspire humanity towards developing this selfless Universal Love.

In the next age after where we are now, in the 6 cultural epoch we will see a recapitulation of the age of Gemini on a higher level. It will be a time that stands under the signature of the Wedding at Cana, where those who unite in the Spirit of Christ will feel good-will towards one another even though they are not blood-relations.

Finally at the end of earth evolution, this sacrificial love will have created a new Cosmos, a universe of love engendered by Human Beings as the 10th hierarchy of Freedom & Love. Christ Himself shows us the way, He put this Love into practice, by descending from the Trinity beyond the Zodiac, into earthly evolution, to unite Himself for all times with humanity, becoming the ultimate example by fulfilling the deed on Golgotha. Christ Himself-a God, lay down his life, to die an earthly death so that we can overcome death.

John, the disciple that Jesus loved most, a direct witness to all the events that he describes in his Gospel, knows this love thru his initiation as Lazarus. He proclaims this in the famous passage of John 3:16 – 18: ‘By this we know love, that He laid down His life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers & sisters. If anyone has material possessions and sees a friend in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? Dear children in Christ, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth’.

And so we see how all impulses concerning community, & the social life, all striving towards joining together on the basis of mutual love & genuine interest in one another, arise from the region of Gemini.

We must persevere even when we can’t see any outward progress – When we insist on striving toward self-development, in service of our true destiny, which is an honoring of the Divine Will, not our own personal desire – The Gemini Meditation tells us “I recognize my other self and in the waning of that self, I grow.” With this resolution to cultivate a universal love we can build a sustainable world-reality.
