3-fold Corona-Comets

Dear Friends – During this Corona-crisis we have had 3 celestial harbingers – 3 trail (tail) blazing comets: Atlas, Swan & Neowise, sent into our solar system by the ever present help of the Spiritual world, to sweep up the chaos & bring clarity to the murky astrality that is pervading our thinking.

To the eye of Spirit, the mission of the comets is perpetually to expel impure astral forces from the Cosmos or to introduce new impulses…”

Comet Atlas will light up the skies later this month

Comet Atlas was the 1^st to arrive, at the very beginning of the Corona-crisis. In Greek Mythology, Atlas is the Titan god who bares the heavens aloft. He personifies the quality of endurance (atlaô). Atlas turns the heavens on their axis, causing the stars to revolve, & he was also the god who instructed humankind in the art of astronomy.

Could the message of the comet Atlas be that we are supposed to start bearing the weight of our collective karma, a call to endurance?

Next came Swan – an Oort cloud comet discovered by the Solar Wind Anisotropies Network (SWAN) camera a few days after the Spring Equinox, on 25 March 2020.

And Comet Neowise, the most spectacular of them all, lasted the longest & recently peaked on 22-23 July 2020. It makes me think of Neo the wise fool from the Matrix. His journey holds many hallmarks of classic myth – He is the reluctant hero, the Chosen One, the savior, & the one who will lead the people to freedom. In order to do that, he must sacrifice himself, & rise from the dead. He faces progressively greater challenges, & as he begins to believe in himself, he is able to overcome all obstacles, including the ultimate adversarial powers.

Neowise really captured the world’s attention because of the spectacular sweep of its bright tail. But are we willing to truly awaken to the New Wisdom (Neowise) blatantly blazing across the horizon; & step out of the Matrix?

Above all, dear friends, this Corona-crisis is a call to reform our social life; & these 3 corona-comets are pointers, awakening us to the opportunity now present, to manifest the 3-fold social organism laid out by Rudolf Steiner (right after WW1 during the time of the Spanish flu epidemic in 1917)

A call for a 3-fold Commonwealth comes from these 3 corona-comets, blazing in from out of the spiritual world. A sign we are meant to put this initiative into action now. The moral imagination invites the higher consciousness of each individual to cultivate in the Cultural realm a human experience of diversity, of freedom, of choice in education, & religion, a new wisdom. With this foundation of tolerance & love, the Economic realm can develop out of sister & brotherhood – in mutuality, like the unselfish, faithful Swan; the Political realm can then hold an undeniable Equality of Rights, like Atlas. And human beings everywhere can live in peace & prosperity, if we will it.

Friends, thru all the lock-down time, the masks that cover our human countenance, the fear & confusion, – the spiritual world is lining up blessings for us, if we will only tune in! 2020 began with a Lunar Eclipse & a Saturn-Pluto conjunction. It will end with a Jupiter-Saturn conjunction, also known as a Great Conjunction, which will mark the beginning of a new 200-year era – occurring on the same day as the Winter Solstice – the birth of the light, blessed by Jupiter the benevolent King, working with Saturn to reclaim Time.

The 3 corona-comets have added to this cosmic conversation meant to enact change! Are we listening? Are we willing to engage in this “Speaking with the Stars”! Are we open to receiving this ever ‘present help from the spiritual world’, & do our part to actively employ it in our intention to foster healing change!?!

We have to prepare for this Great Conjunction now, by tuning in to these Spiritual Beings & what they are offering. We are called to connect our current events to our cosmic speaking, to recreate our communication, & to awaken to community (come unity). But dear friends, the message of the comets is that we are each individuals, & we must blaze our own way in the world; working to cultivate each of the 3 Social Spheres, using our gifts to heal ourselves & the world.

August 20: Check-in, share conversation, build the ground for the journey together.

August 21-22: Travel to Wisconsin Move together towards the land, link up with Farmer John and Haidy Angelic Organics Biodynamic Farm, and also with Dana and Phil Burns at Healing Traditions and Alizur farm. Connect with the land, plants, animals, and one another, through creative explorations and “roughin’ it” type amendments. Sleep under the stars or indoors.

August 23: Return to Chicago Enter back into the metropolitan context, into the social questions of urban life, and close the gathering together at Elderberries, setting the ground for future work out of questions of courage that are present.

Society Anthroposophy Worldwide 9/14 — Sergei Olegovitch Prokofieff
16 January 1954 – † 26 July 2014

Sergei O. Prokofieff was the 1^st to confirm my connection with the New Isis. And his dedication to the 1^st Class Lessons birthed in me a true knowing. He opened for me the living reality of the ‘New Mysteries’, revealing the relationship of the Christ-Sophia in this Michael age, with Rudolf Steiner & Christian Rosenkreutz, which we as human beings are called to explore & develop. “The Cycle of the Year as a Path of Initiation – A Esoteric Study of the Festivals” is my Bible – my calling, my life’s work. “The Occult Significance of Forgiveness” changed my life (I am of course still striving here) And the massive work “May Human Beings Hear It” which convinced me to dedicate myself to the Foundation Stone Meditation, has kept me involved in the Anthroposophical Society, when the human failings & karmic knots would have driven me away; pointing up the living reality of the Christmas Conference, which I feel a personal & collective responsibility to fulfill.

My heart spills over with gratitude for this true initiate, this true anthroposopher, this true human being, who continues to be my mentor from across the Threshold.

“Anthroposophia seeks to become a new group-soul for that part of humankind which is united within the General Anthroposophical Society founded by Rudolf Steiner at the Christmas Conference of 1923-24, thereby representing a kind of archetype for the whole of future evolution & at the same time initiating that universally human process which Rudolf Steiner described in the following words: ‘When people gather together in voluntary associations, they group themselves around focal points. The feelings that stream together at such a focal point now gives Beings the opportunity to work as a kind of group-soul, though in a completely different sense from the former unconscious group-souls. All previous group-souls were beings who made man unfree. These New Beings, however, are wholly compatible with the freedom & preservation of human individuality’.

Anthroposophia would seek to become the 1^st of these Beings in our time. However, whether this is possible depends not on this Being alone, but also on human beings.

Thus by uniting with one another in the General Anthroposophical Society out of a love for Anthroposophia & a wish to serve her as a real, living Being, anthroposophist’s throughout the world have the task of together creating on Earth something akin to an all embracing soul-chalice into which this supersensible Being, the youngest member of the heavenly Sophia, can descend. And this means none other than the beginning of the incarnation of the heavenly Sophia on Earth. (this will come about in the 7^th epoch, but of which we must prepare now)

Only from this grandiose perspective can we really understand the inner significance of the deed wrought by Rudolf Steiner at the Christmas Conference, a deed which represents the high-point & culmination of the entire 21 year development of the anthroposophical movement (1902-23) – a ‘Turning Point of Time’ – For it signified the birth on Earth of her ego in the sheaths of the General Anthroposophical Society. In this way the foundation was laid, or-one could say-the possibility created, for the further working of Anthroposophia in the midst as a New Group-Soul.” ~Sergei O. May we take up this task to give birth to Anthroposophia, this Being of Human Wisdom, within ourselves, to serve the world.

Sergei Olegovitch was the grandson of the composer Sergei Prokofiev. Born in Moscow, he studied fine arts & painting at the Moscow School of Art. He encountered anthroposophy in his youth, & soon made the decision to devote his life to it. Prokofieff, wrote his first book, Rudolf Steiner and the Founding of the New Mysteries, while living in Soviet Russia. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, he was a co-founder of the Anthroposophical Society in Russia. At Easter 2001, he became a member of the Executive Council of the General Anthroposophical Society in Dornach, Switzerland. Prokofieff was a prolific author; at the core of his work is an attempt to develop a deepened understanding for Christianity on the basis of Rudolf Steiner’s spiritual-scientific research. Prokofieff left us a treasure trove of Works

26 July 2020 – ‘Speaking with the Stars’ – Bella Luna, almost at 1st quarter, shines in the Southwest as the stars come out. Look for Spica sparkling about a fist to her left. Almost 3x’s as far above the Moon is brighter Arcturus.

The Sagittarius Teapot is in the south these evenings; find it right of Jupiter & Saturn. With the advance of summer, the Teapot is starting to tilt & pour from its spout to the right. The Teapot will tilt farther & farther for the rest of the summer — or for much of the night if you stay out late.

The tail of Scorpius is lower right of the Teapot, by hardly a fist at arm’s length. Look for the two stars especially close together in the tail. These are Lambda & fainter Upsilon Scorpii, known as the Cat’s Eyes. They’re canted at an angle; the cat is tilting his head & winking.

Rudolf Steiner’s Lectures on this day

ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

Feast of Saint Anne, mother of Mary, & grandmother of Jesus according to apocryphal Christian & Islamic tradition.

1856 – Birthday of George Bernard Shaw, Irish playwright & critic, Nobel Prize laureate.

1875 – Birthday of Carl Jung, Swiss psychiatrist & psychotherapist. Jung was also an artist, craftsman & builder as well as a prolific writer. Many of his works were not published until after his death & some are still awaiting publication.

Among the central concepts of analytical psychology is individuation—the lifelong psychological process of differentiation of the self out of each individual’s conscious & unconscious elements. Jung considered it to be the main task of human development. He created some of the best known psychological concepts, including synchronicity, archetypal phenomena, the collective unconscious, the psychological complex, & extraversion / introversion.

When Jung was six months old, tension between his parents was growing. Emilie Jung, his mother was an eccentric & depressed woman; she spent considerable time in her bedroom where she said that spirits visited her at night. Although she was normal during the day, Jung recalled that at night his mother became strange & mysterious. He reported that one night he saw a faintly luminous & indefinite figure coming from her room with a head detached from the neck, floating in the air in front of the body. Jung was a solitary, introverted child.

From childhood, he believed that, like his mother, he had 2 personalities—a modern Swiss citizen & a personality more suited to the 18th century. Personality Number 1″, as he termed it, was a typical schoolboy living in the era of the time. “Personality Number 2” was a dignified, authoritative & influential man from the past. A number of childhood memories made lifelong impressions on him. As a boy, he carved a tiny mannequin into the end of the wooden ruler from his pencil case & placed it inside the case. He added a stone, which he had painted into upper & lower halves, & hid the case in the attic. Periodically, he would return to the mannequin, often bringing tiny sheets of paper with messages inscribed on them in his own secret language. He later reflected that this ceremonial act brought him a feeling of inner peace &security. Years later, he discovered similarities between his personal experience & the practices associated with totems in indigenous cultures, such as the collection of soul-stones near Arlesheim or the tjurungas of Australia. He concluded that his intuitive ceremonial act was an unconscious ritual, which he had practiced in a way that was strikingly similar to those in distant locations which he, as a young boy, knew nothing about. His observations about symbols, archetypes, & the collective unconscious were inspired, in part, by these early experiences combined with his later research.

At the age of 12, shortly before the end of his first year at the Humanistisches Gymnasium in Basel, Jung was pushed to the ground by another boy so hard that he momentarily lost consciousness. A thought then came to him—”now you won’t have to go to school anymore.” From then on, whenever he walked to school or began homework, he fainted. He remained at home for the next 6 months until he overheard his father speaking hurriedly to a visitor about the boy’s future ability to support himself. They suspected he had epilepsy. Confronted with the reality of his family’s poverty, he realized the need for academic excellence. He went into his father’s study & began pouring over Latin grammar. He eventually overcame the urge & did not faint again. This event, Jung later recalled, “was when I learned what a neurosis is.”

Jung did not plan to study psychiatry since it was not considered prestigious at the time. But, when looking at a psychiatric textbook, his interest was immediately captured—it combined the biological & the spiritual, exactly what he was searching for.

In 1895 Jung began to study medicine at the University of Basel. Barely a year later in 1896, his father Paul died & left the family near destitute. They were helped out by relatives who also contributed to Jung’s studies.

During his student days, he entertained his contemporaries with the family legend, that his paternal grandfather was the illegitimate son of Wolfgang Goethe & his German great-grandmother, Sophie Ziegler. In later life, he pulled back from this tale, saying only that Sophie was a friend of Goethe’s niece.

A peek into the Divine Blueprint: It is Michael’s intention that intelligence will stream through the hearts of human beings, & that it will be consciously connected to the same divine spiritual forces that helped to create humanity in the beginnings of time.

For spiritually active pupils in the Michaelic stream, the heart becomes: An eye for self-cognition, the realization of the true self as eternal being; it also becomes the eye of the Ego-sense, the true ‘I’ – which perceives the ‘other’ in their true being, an eye of cognition for supersensible beings & for the etheric Christ Himself, protected & cherished in the Michaelic mystery-culture of will; it will also become possible to perceive the karma of others as well as one’s own karmic chain.

On Rudolf Steiner’s 63rd birthday he gave the following meditation to Dr. Ita Wegman:
“Hearts will read karma
When hearts learn
To read the Word
Which shapes things
In human lives
When hearts learn
To utter the Word
Which shapes things
In the human world.”

16 July 2020 – “Speaking with the Stars”: Neowise & STEVE – a recent discovery that looks like an aurora, but it’s not. The purple glow is caused by hot ribbons of gas flowing through Earth’s magnetosphere from the Sun. It appears during some geomagnetic storms, often alongside a type of green aurora known as the “picket fence,” shown in the photo along with Neowise.

STEVE appears most often in spring & fall. So what summoned STEVE in mid-summer? It may have been a CME (formed by explosive reconfigurations of solar magnetic fields) from the Sun, that grazed Earth’s magnetic field. (“…the ever present help from the spiritual world“!)

Since the 15th century, popular devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel has centered on the Scapular, a sacramental associated with promises of Mary’s special aid for the salvation of the devoted wearer. Since the Middle Ages, Our Lady of Mount Carmel has been related to Purgatory, where souls are purged of sins in the fires. In some images, she is portrayed as accompanied with angels and souls wearing Brown Scapulars, who plead for her mediation.

Our Lady of Mount Carmel was seen in the apparitions of Cova da Iria in Fátima, Portugal, by Lúcia Santos & her co-visionary companions Jacinta & Francisco Marto & as many as 70,000 witnesses of the extraordinary events during the Miracle of the Sun. She also appeared to Saint Simon Stock to whom she gave the Brown Scapular. The Garabandal apparitions, in Spain, were reported to be images of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel. Also in Acquafondata, Italy, the apparition of the Virgin of Mount Carmel, was seen on July 16, 1841. There is still today a small sanctuary on the site.

1879 – Birthday of Elisabeth Vreed – Dutch philosopher, mathematician, astronomer, astrologer & anthroposopher. Elisabeth Vreede came into contact with Theosophy in her home growing up. She was interested early on in the starry sky, read the works of Camille Flammarion & learned French at the same time. At the University of Leyden she studied mathematics, astronomy, philosophy (especially Hegel) & Sanskrit. She was also actively involved in student life, founding a boat club, & was a council member of the students’ union.

Vreede was leader of the mathematics & astronomy sections in the Goetheanum in Dornach from 1926 till 1935. In 1935 the separation within the Anthroposophical Society took place & she was expelled from the executive council & excluded along with her long-time friend & co-member, Dr. Ita Wegman from the board of directors. She was also cut off from the observatory & archives that she herself helped assemble.

The last years of her life became more lonely. She was cut off from her friends abroad by the War. The death of Ita Wegman at the beginning of March, 1943, was a great shock for her.

Rudolf Steiner said of her: ‘this individuality does not wish to be recognized …’ Elisabeth Knottenbelt in her memoirs describes statements about her: that ‘she incarnated too early’ for the sake of serving Rudolf Steiner. “for this task [the work with Rudolf Steiner] she had assumed the sacrifice of a premature incarnation. One who, for the sake of a spiritual mission, comes in this way to earth too early must forego a lot. To a great extent one leaves one’s karmic circle of human beings behind in the spiritual word. Her life was thus really a quite lonely one, only a few persons were grouped around her without any real connection.”

Here is a quote from a letter written by her prior to her removal from the executive council: “The Being of Anthroposophy – I myself have always felt it as a spiritual being newly created by Dr. Steiner, as it were the first hierarchical Being that men have begotten, quite young and still underdeveloped, as is the case with a child—a Being that must now begin to develop further through our common work as a ‘community of knowledge’, and with the cooperation of its creator from the spiritual world. Just for this reason I find it so painful when attacks are continually made against part of the active members such as to exclude them from the work, from creating together the Being of Anthroposophy.”

In 2022 The ASA will work with the theme of Isis-Sophia. A group of us have been holding this intention, meeting monthly since the Holy Nights to prepare & share our personal biographies around how we came to know ‘The Sophia’. Since today is my 60^th natal return, it seemed a fine time to do a bit of biography work, & I was grateful to have this powerful theme to focus on.

My 1^st memory is when I was about 16 months old. My mother Betty Mae (she would have been 80 this 19 July) was pregnant with my sister, & I had the thought that she was going to give birth to me. When my sister was born, it was a huge shock. “That’s not me” I cried & ran out to the yard to sit under my weeping willow tree. I remember looking at my mother holding my sister & thinking over & over: “All people are different, but they all come from the mother”.

My next big memory was when I was 3. Our family met up with some friends to share a lake cottage at the Indiana dunes. I was curled up on the floor sleeping with all the other kids in a big puppy pile, when a bight moonbeam pierced my left eye like a laser & woke me up. I was enchanted; it was like a siren song calling me to get up & follow that bright shimmering path. So I walked out the sliding glass doors & followed that beam of light across the sand, to where it was singing on the water. I would have waded out into the slow glistening waves, if not for one of the dads who happened to be out smoking a cigar. He swooped me up & brought me into the room where the adults were playing cards. I ran to sit on my daddy’s lap & he told everyone that I was Moonstruck. They all laughed. I was confused, but enjoyed the attention.

(Many years later, after the complicated birth of my daughter, I had a similar experience with a shaft of sunlight, a true turning point, beginning my initiation into the Christ mysteries, but that’s another story)

When I was 9, I started spending a lot of time with my ‘Grandma Good-Witch’ my Father’s mother, who was a ‘Strega’ from the old country; very different from my Irish Tennessee Granny who made yummy buttermilk biscuits & doodle-soup from the roasted pig-in-a-pit. I helped my Strega-Nona craft healing potions from herbs, & she taught me the peasant’s version of ‘Candle Magic’ involving the Saints; & rites that invoked the ‘Goddess’ in her 3-fold forms. I took particular interest in Proserpina, & Sapientia or The Divine Sophia.

My Strega-Nona held ‘salons’ in her living room in Oak Park IL, where folks from different spiritual traditions would gather. I helped serve the snacks, & tried to understand what they were going on about. My Grandfather, who only spoke Italian, sang opera, & others recited from things like Goethe’s Faust, or read poems by Blake or Yeats. Everyone spoke loudly, with great enthusiasm, arguing with good cheer.

2 people from the S.R.I.A (The Societas Rosicruciana in America) took a shining to me, engaging me in conversation, & would often bring me little gifts. I still have the small ISIS statue they gave me. When I took it home I began to have dreams where I was serving like at my Grandmother’s, but in an ornate temple with a colossus of Isis. I won’t go into all the details, but my father was there: a shadowy version of Set/Typhoon. In one dream in particular, a Full Moon shone in from the sky-light, & Isis called to me, using a name I knew was mine, but which I cannot pronounce.

I told the two Rosicrucian’s of the dreams. They went over to talk to my Grandmother & the next thing I knew I was ‘working’ with them as ‘an apprentice’. They would come to the salon early (traveling in each time from Kingston New York!) & we would do certain exercises involving shapes & colors; or they would tell me stories; or show me beautiful pictures & ask what I saw.

Seven times a year at the Christian Festival times we set up elaborate tables with art & objects from nature. At the climax of these little ceremonies I was to sit & concentrate on a rose quartz crystal swinging on a golden chain. It was like I fell asleep & when I ‘awoke’ the atmosphere in the room was completely changed. I always felt enlivened; & we would have a big feast. This became my greatest joy, & went on month after month; until I got my moon-cycle, one of the last in my class, at around the age 15.

So when puberty hit, it hit hard & I questioned everything. I even rebelled against the SRIA. Not being able to remember anything during the ‘ceremonies,’ gave me a bad feeling, & I knew I had to get out of my home situation. So I worked extra hard at school, & took enough credits to graduate a year early.

Right after my 16^th birthday I married a boy, left home – & went to do Summer Stock Theater in Tarkio, Missouri. Then we moved to Hollywood CA. Well that quickly ended & I started waitressing & going to college in Long Beach CA.

I transferred to San Francisco State, to study Philosophy, Comparative Religion & Women’s Studies while working at the Strand Theatre. It was there at Cal State that I discovered Rudolf Steiner, thru Owen Barfield – When I read ‘How to Know Higher Worlds’ I knew I was home. Yet at the time I had no idea that there was an Anthroposophical Society.

When I graduated, I moved to NYC, took some poetry classes with Audrey Lord, continued my research into the ancient mystery schools, & got into some bands in the vital music scene on the Lower East Side (Health Hen, Baby Boom, The Valkyries, Heal…)

The guitar player & I were part of the ‘squatters movement’ – we took over an abandoned building, where we lived for 4 years in between tours. Another long story, but what is relevant is that I would go up on the roof & watch the night sky. Bella Luna was my teacher, unveiling for me in living pictures the secrets of the stars.

As soon as I arrived in NYC I started having dreams about the SRIA, & sure enough they contacted me thru a friend I just happened to meet at ‘Ahimsa’ the Organic Restaurant where I was chef. I told them ok, yes, I wanted to take up the initiatory path, but this time in full consciousness, no trances. They agreed, & besides my daily mediations & study, I stated traveling to The ‘Mother House’ in Kingston New York, a few hours upstate, carpooling with a small group of contemporaries, every month. (These practical teachings, the rituals, & the community dynamics are a whole saga in itself.)

The band broke up (Reagan era politics & drugs…) The guitar player, Philip, always wanted to play ‘The Blues’, & my uncle was dying of AIDS, so we moved to Chicago.

I felt called to take my years of esoteric teachings out into the world, which I believed was in desperate need of the Divine Feminine. So I created empowerment circles for woman; we called ourselves ‘She Drums’. Gathering every New Moon, we followed the seasonal energies to invoke the many faces of the ‘Goddess’, exploring thru sound vibration, art & ritual, a journey to ‘Know Thyself’.

After marrying ‘CG the Solar King’ (which facilitated my experience with the ‘shaft of sunlight’) I created the ‘We Drum Tribe’ for the whole community to gather on the Full Moons, to resonate with, & out-picture the mystery of the union between Love (Christ) & Light (Sophia).

It wasn’t until my daughter UVA, was in 3^rd grade, did I find out that there was such a thing as the Anthroposophical Society; with a Branch within walking distance from my house no less. It took another 2 years before I even heard about the ‘1^st Class’; & another year till I found the Christian Community.

Why was everyone at the Branch so cold & off-putting; treating these important initiatives as an elite clandestine society, I wondered? – For Steiner himself said the time of secrets had passed. Why didn’t the Waldorf School ever talk about Rudolf Steiner; & why didn’t anyone want to mention ‘The Christ’ or The Sophia?

Before I came to be the ‘Festivals Coordinator’ at the branch, I felt called to bring a lecture about ‘Columbia as the Spirit of America’, for the 4^th of July, but the program director at the Branch told me NO; ‘it was not Anthroposophical, too pagan’.

Put off, but undaunted, a year after I was ‘in charge’, I started our annual conscious NYE gathering, & gave a program entitled: ‘Isis Redeemed’ – a kind of performance piece with art collages around the telling of the ‘New Isis Myth’ by Rudolf Steiner.

Since then, along with my service to the community in the practical work of the Festival life; the Bio-dynamic Preps to spiritualize the Earth; the active research into what Steiner calls ‘Cognitive-Ritual’; ‘The 2 Streams’; the Esoteric Youth Circle; & The Foundation Stone Meditation; my primary focus is in exploring & co-creating experiential programs around the connection between Michael, The Christos & The Isis-Sophia, in the New Mysteries of Anthroposophia.

Comet Neowise – wraps up its morning appearance then transitions to an evening light as it zips from Lynx into Ursa Major

Interesting that this new comet discovered in March during the call of the Corona, is named ‘Neowise’. It makes me think of Neo the wise fool from the Matrix. His journey holds many hallmarks of classic myth – He is the reluctant hero, the Chosen One, the savior, & the one who will lead the people to freedom. In order to do that, he must sacrifice himself, & rise from the dead. He faces progressively greater challenges, & as he begins to believe in himself, he is able to overcome all obstacles, including the ultimate adversarial powers.

“The Comet represents an element that does not wholly enter the usual sphere of cosmic law. Although they still contain a trace of the direct working of spiritual powers, indeed, of the very highest — the Seraphim and Cherubim. Before ordinary law may be broken through, the very highest power and insight is required. The various comets, indeed, are agents of a very special nature in our planetary system, their polar antithesis being in the moons.

Just as the moons are a kind of corpse which the planetary system trails along with it, so, on the other side, the comets may be spoken of as constant purifiers of the spiritual atmosphere within the solar system.

In earlier times men thought of them as the “scavengers of God,” and many superstitions have gathered around them. The World Power Conference was conceived by the Scotsman Daniel Nicol Dunlop, a entrepreneur & Theosophist who later joined Rudolf Steiner’s Anthroposophical Society. He organized the first meeting which took place in London on 30 June 1924 & attracted 1,700 attendees from 40 nations. It was deemed so successful that the conference was established as a recurring event. In the beginning, the World Power Conference convened on a regular schedule every six years.

D.N. Dunlop was a pioneer of modern community building—in two areas in particular: industry & economics, & the sphere of the free spiritual life. In 1924 he founded the World Power Conference, opened by the Prince of Wales in London that year. This was the first international conference to invite engineers & industrialists from all over the world (including Germany & Russia, two former World War adversaries), with the purpose of establishing a basis for co-operation & co-ordination in the production & technological use of energy resources within a modern world economy.

In 1929 a worldwide assessment of raw materials & energy resources was published in book-form with the title Power Resources of the World. The WPC gave birth to a permanent institution—the World Energy Council—that has its headquarters in London & has since held regular congresses in different capital cities throughout the world. The website of this private international organization records a short history of the institution which focuses on the profiles of five leading figures, beginning with Dunlop: ‘Shortly after World War I, Scotsman Daniel Dunlop, a visionary working in the British electricity industry, decided to bring together leading energy experts for a World Power Conference to discuss current and emerging energy issues. In 1923, he began working with countries around the globe to establish national committees that would stimulate attendance and prepare for technical participation at such a conference. The First World Power Conference was held the next year, 1924, in London and attracted 1,700 delegates from 40 countries. The meeting was so successful that those attending decided to establish a permanent organisation to continue the dialogue begun at the conference.’

Nature Spirits and the Spirits of the Elements by D.N. Dunlop

Within the spiritual-cultural sphere, Dunlop was a pioneer of the ‘summer school’—an idea which he actively pursued and brought to practical realization during his theosophical phase. Dunlop maintained that the ‘summer school’ was not in conflict with pure individual striving, but could potentize it— offer it fulfillment. For true individualism, if developed far enough, is exactly what socially conscious communities need if they are to progress.

To a large extent these summer schools were gatherings of ‘communities of free spirits’. Following his encounter with Rudolf Steiner in 1922, Dunlop organized the great summer schools of Penmaenmawr &Torquay. According to Rudolf Steiner, these were ‘recorded in the Golden Book of the Anthroposophical Movement’. Steiner himself characterized Dunlop as a ‘far-seeing’ anthroposophist with visionary goals, endowed with clear and delicate perception, and remarkable human sensitivity & tact’. Despite Steiner’s very high public regard for him—Dunlop chose to remain in the background of events.

Daniel Nicol Dunlop met Rudolf Steiner in person in 1922. It was the Dutch manager Joseph van Leer who brought them together. They sat at the table together – Rudolf Steiner who spoke no English & Daniel N. Dunlop who spoke no German. Joseph van Leer stepped in as translator but what he didn’t see was that Rudolf Steiner took the hand of Daniel Dunlop & held it, under the table, during the whole of the conversation. In 1934, during one of his famous summer schools, Dunlop shared the memory of this with his friend Walter Johannes Stein. He made an even more interesting statement, that Rudolf Steiner on this occasion said to him, ‘We are brothers.’

Eleanor Merry, also an active member of the early British Anthroposophical Society, worked intensively with Dunlop for the last 14 years of his life during which time he told her that Rudolf Steiner gave him an insight into a former life of his where he, Dunlop, had been a member of the innermost circle of the Order of the Knights Templar ‘connected to all the ancient mysteries’ and had also worked within a secret society among the Templars’. Dunlop’s most deeply rooted intention was to serve the supra-personal goals of humanity, thereby sacrificing all personal & trivial motives & deeds.

Please familiarize yourself with the lecture if possible so you will feel comfortable sharing your reflections and thoughts with the group.

This collection of lectures has been republished by Rudolf Steiner Press under the title: “Manifestations of Karma.” This book is a translation from German of Die Offenbarung des Karma (Ga 120), published in English by Rudolf Steiner Press in 1996.
