Rising with the Tide

I greet you dear friends from deep inside the St. John’s Tide, where I am swimming with the Virtue of the Month: ‘Unselfishness Becomes Catharsis’ – which is acting like a Catalyst for the Call of Conscience – ever issuing forth from the Spirit of John the Baptizer – answering the Universal need that arises to Let the Light of the Higher “I” shine into our being.

At our Spring Biodynamic Prep-making Work-day on Zinniker Farm, Margaret took me aside & told me how much it meant to her that in 2017 I led a powerful St. John’s Festival on the farm. She said that year she was going thru a difficult time as her mother was making the transition into the spiritual world. She shared how the drumming & my leading thoughts on the Season, helped her come to a place of peace – This was a catalyst, she emphasized, that allowed her to let go of fear & worry – Which then allowed her mother to pass over peacefully. Margaret said she has been wanting to thank me for years, & asked if I might lead another Drum Circle to celebrate St. John’s Day this year..?

I often suffer from self doubt – thinking what I do doesn’t matter, isn’t wanted, or that someone else can do it better; so I was very grateful to hear that our gathering had meant so much. And I enthusiastically agreed to bring the St. John’s Festival alive again on the farm.

The Zinniker’s wanted to make it a low-key community celebration, not a workday; & Margaret wanted to bring her Christian Community friends together, & I wanted to serve the Spiritual World, the Community – the land & the Farmers. And so it was that More than 50 folks came from near & far.

Gathering around in a big circle before the sumptuous potluck meal, I looked around at the bright shining faces, & felt ‘Words of Flame’ rise-up within me, as if the Baptist was standing with us.

In my minds-eye, the circle of human beings became a Christened periphery, with the blazing bonfire – a point at the center, creating the astrological symbol of the Sun.

The flaming point seemed to move out into vertical & horizontal lines to create a Cross within the Circle – the planetary symbol for Earth – & the alchemical sign for Salt – the cube shaped mineral-crystal outpictured in the Holy of Holies & the cubic altar of The New Jerusalem.

We had ‘Squared the Circle’ bringing in the 4 Elements.

Acknowledging these Nature Beings fostered on the sacred land maintained by the Zinniker Family, we directed our human Reverence & Gratitude to connect & enliven the Christic impulses, Living into each Quarter.

Because the land was so dry, after giving Recognition with Thanks & Praise, to the Elements, we appealed specifically to the Undines for some rain to ease the drought. We made the intention that during the Drum Circle we would do a Rain Dance.

By establishing ‘The Great Cross of Nature’ – we experience the Seasonal Round  – We see how the Equinoxes of Spring & Autumn hold the Horizontal Axis, the balance of Resurrection & Renunciation – Easter & Michaelmas.

And coinciding with the Vertical Axis we meet the polarity of the Solstices3 days after the Summer Solstice is the Birthday of The Forerunner, John the Baptizer; & 3 days after the Winter Solstice brings us the fixed date of Christmas – the Birthday of the Luke Jesus.

When thinking about the Living Cycle of the Soul of the Earth, the in-breath & out-breath – now – during the Summer-Tide – we feel ourselves fully exhaled out to the periphery of the cosmos –

We are a circle, within a circle
With no beginning, and never ending

Intermingled with the grandeur of the highest Cosmic Mysteries, where the Divine forces of life exist among the Stars.

The Soul of the Earth is dreaming now in the heights, in union with the Angelic Hierarchies; & it is this dreaming which is brought back into the Earth to become assessable to our thinking during the Sacred Time of the Holy Nights.

Epiphany, the last of the Holy Nights, coincides with the Baptism of Jesus by John – the birth of Christ on Earth – the fulfillment of John the Baptizers mission.

And just as John the Baptist, the last Old Testament Prophet, had to decrease; when our ‘little ego’ decreases, we grow in Christ.

At the fullness of Summer, the light is so bright that it leaves no room for the shadow to hide. Summer is associated with High Noon – the hour of judgment – “Then you shall know the truth, & the truth will set you free.”

This can happen if we respond to the Summertime call for a ‘Metanoia’- from the Greek μετάνοια – a transformative change of heart & mind – a Spiritual Conversion, brought in thru Repentance / Atonement; a review of our Conscience; a call to ‘make straight the path’.

Then the power of our Higher “I” will increase, just as the Christ impulse is ever increasing in Earth existence.

After his sacrifice, John the Baptizer, was able to distillate his Spirit-Self to become like a guardian angel for the apostles, especially Lazarus John, his name-sake – Johannes – E – O – Ah – nes.

Following this archetypal gesture from ‘the voice of one crying in the Wilderness’ we can see that John the Baptist has become one of the main impulse givers towards a new kind of group work – guiding community life for us today.

After the delicious repast, I acted as Master of Ceremonies & sparked the space for artistic sharings out of the community. Many folks came forth with a story, song or poem. Rev. Jeana Lee brought a wonderful overview of Christianity. Velsum sang. Gregory & Alexander brought some Irish tunes on violin & cello to get the crowd dancing. A few young people including Emma & Ultra taught us some songs. And this led naturally into the Drumming & Song Circle in earnest.

The clouds rolled in as we sang “Air I am, Fire I Am, Water, Earth & Spirit I am”. The lingering twilight brought a few fireflies which receieved our serenade. Soon lightning flashes could be seen striking in the dusky clouds above. We felt ourselves rise together in ‘Ripening Glory’

We sang to Mark & Lucien, & Jack’s dad who recently passed away, to celebrate their St. John’s Day Birthdays.

When it was too dark to find our shoes we closed the circle, feeling that the reverberations of our sounding added to the ‘Music of the Spheres’  – An echo that unites us to the eternity of the Trinity – Reminding us to explore our own inner harmony with the cosmos – For at Midsummer the Trinity reveals itself out of the heart of this cosmic activity.

Substance of Earth
Essence of Light
Grace of Heaven
In Us Unite

Our carload made it back to the city by 1 am; the thunder building. By 3 am our Rain Dance started to pay off – What a gift! There was no doubt. Faith is real – effecting change & cooperation between Spirit & Matter – Thought & Deed –

Blessings as we continue to unfold this St. John’s Tide.

The wise one built their house upon the Rock,
And the rains came tumbling down.
The rains came down and the waters came up,
But the house on the Rock stood firm.

So build your life on the Being of Love,
And the blessings will come down.
The blessings come down as your prayers go up,
So build your life on Love.

A Good Man

Franklin Bell

Greetings on this Father’s Day

Every culture has its own history of Festive celebrations revealing a treasury of archetypes that model how to be in the world – which then informs what the world will become. These narratives & festivals were how social patterns used to be formed – Before the distorted lens of the screen, or a bought & sold history written by the conquers, like we see more & more today. Thru the revival of archetypes which models what it means to be a ‘good’ human being, we impart to our children who they can become.

Today being Father’s Day, let us ponder specifically what it can mean to be ‘a good man’? How can a good man be the ‘Good Father’ – to himself, his children & for the world?

I love this short list of Archetypes:

King
Warrior
Magician
Lover

What are some their Qualities?

The Benevolent King: Shows Leadership, has Strategic Vision – based on Divine Wisdom, is Decisive, Inspired, a Fair Judge, Charismatic, full of Integrity, Unselfish – Empowering of others – a Blessing bestower, Humble, Holds Authority with Order & Structure…I particularly love this idea of Benediction – A King who gives a blessing bestows upon another the right to go forward & make the best use of their talents to get the job done -Recognizing that ‘Authority’ must come from within.

The Protector/Warrior: Is above all Courageous, Merciful, Strong in Body, Soul & Spirit, Disciplined, Determined, Reliable, Focused, a Tactical Risk Taker who can think on their feet, Gaining achievement thru Endurance, & Loyality…A good warrior displays valor – rather than being driven by blood-lust – they are reliable & loyal, rather than seeking to take over. The Warrior has total focus on implementing the required tactics to accomplish the strategy set by their King/Queen. Strength & endurance needs to be physical, mental & emotional. Their characteristic quality of service enhances their sense of duty.

The Magician: Must be Wise, Intuitive, Perceptive, Insightful, Knowledgeable, is inwardly Powerful, has earned Mystic vision, using his gifts for the higher good, a Respected – helpful Mentor…The Magician can be a teacher bestowing knowledge & wisdom to better ‘know thyself’. This is empowering to others & brings out the ‘magic’ in them. In cultural myth, the Magician seeks wisdom not for its own sake, but so that they may better understand, serve & mentor. Many Magicians have a supernatural gift seen perhaps thru music, art, speech, charisma…They use this ability to enhance the lives of others rather than for personal gain.

The Lover: is Authentic, Compassionate, Affectionate, Caring, Empathic, Altruistic, Open-Hearted, Honest, Trustworthy, able to appreciate Beauty, Vital, Generous, Celebratory…The unconditional Lover shares these qualities to enhance & improve the lives of others – Fostering the energy & power for living in harmony. Their appreciation for the beauty they see around them is an inspiration to others – The earth, the sky, the passing breeze.  The Lover takes the moments of beauty seen in the little things, like the smile of a child, or an old lady, & makes sure that moment is not missed. Living in Celebration is the quality of being able to stop, breathe, look around & see what joy there is in life. The Lover knows how to comfort & sustain.

I love this song by XTC – Greenman

What would it be like to bring the qualities of: King – Warrior – Magician – Lover, to life in the world?

Blessings on all who embody the Good Father!

POD (Poem Of the Day)

~My song raps itself around
The belly of the New Sophia
Pulsing in union with The Logos
In rhythm with the Sun streaming

One gets smart through experience, but wisdom is the force that streams into us from the spiritual world and then streams out again. Wisdom also comes from the mouth of babes. When what streams out comes more from the feeling, it is wisdom, but when it stimulates a person into action so that productivity predominates, it is love.

But one has to know what love really is. Someone may feel sympathy for a person’s misfortune, but that isn’t real love. Sympathy only becomes love if one steps in and helps them.

Wisdom and love make up the I. The I is love and wisdom that have become will. This is the higher triad.” ~Rudolf Steiner, Esoteric Lessons, Hamburg. 31 May 1908

Dear friends – Our task is to make this spiritual wisdom which has imprinted into our feeling life from the spiritual world, conscious. We do this by noticing the after images & complementary colors that come with memory, taking the feelings out of the astral, using them to stimulate the etheric body instead. Then when we stream out with our feelings – we can consciously unite with the soul of all we see in the world.

We become truly wise when our feelings can add to the wisdom in the soul of the world.

When we do this we are using our imagination to become inspired. We look out at the beauty of nature, for instance, & we are filled with reverence & awe. When we bring our soul forces consciously in hand, we can enter the soul-life of another human being to unite with them – we feel ‘moved’ by their joys or misfortune & together we can share a common fellowship or love. This brings in intuition.

7 June 2023 – “Speaking with the Stars”: From an article by Dr Elizabeth Vreede: ” Comets represent an element that does not wholly enter the usual sphere of cosmic law, although they still contain a trace of the direct working of spiritual powers, indeed, of the very highest — the Seraphim and Cherubim. Before ordinary law may be broken through, the very highest power and insight is required. The various comets, indeed, are agents of a very special nature in our planetary system, their polar antithesis being in the moons. Just as the moons are a kind of corpse which the planetary system trails along with it, so, on the other side, the comets may be spoken of as constant purifiers of the spiritual atmosphere within the solar system. In earlier times men thought of them as the “scavengers of God,” and many superstitions have gathered around them. To the eye of Spirit, too, the mission of the comets is perpetually to expel impure astral forces from the Cosmos or to introduce new impulses.

ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY (Rudolf Steiner’s orginal Calendar of the Soul, Anthrowiki, Wikipedia Commons)

~Rudolf Steiner

7 June 1924 – Beginning of the “Agricultural Course” on the Koberwitz estate of Count & Countess Keyserlingk – The Founding of Biodynamic Agriculture by Rudolf Steiner.

Following the occult responsibility of a great initiate, Rudolf Steiner waited until the seeds of an idea came to him from striving individuals in order, when the time was ripe, to plant, & nurture a new impulse in the world.

Steiner’s Agriculture Course encompassed just 8 lectures presented over a 10 day period during the Whitsun-tide of 1924, from June 7th thru the 16th, at the small village of Koberwitz, Silesia (now Kobierzyce, Poland).

Count Carl Keyserlingk was an anthroposophist, & the estate manager of 18,500 acres at Koberwitz. He managed 18 farms, with more than 1000 workers. So Keyserlingk was keen for Steiner to present a course for farmers – Especially since there was concern among the farmers about of the rapid change in agricultural practices in the wake of the supply of cheap synthetic nitrogenous fertilizer flowing from the adoption of the Haber-Bosch process for the ‘fixing’ of gaseous nitrogen which was first demonstrated in 1909 & which was then rapidly industrialized on a grand scale for explosives, & after WWI, for fertilizer.

Ehrenfried Pfeiffer’s account relates that“Count Keyserlingk set to work in dead earnest to persuade Dr. Steiner to give an agricultural course. As Dr. Steiner was already overwhelmed with work, tours & lectures, he put off his decision from week to week. The undaunted Count then dispatched his nephew to Dornach, with orders to camp on Dr. Seiner’s doorstep & refuse to leave without a definite commitment for the course. This was finally given.”

Keyserlingk was the driving force behind the agriculture course. He was described by Elisabeth Vreede, who was at the course, as “one to whom farming itself was a priestly office” According to the Astrosopher: “Count Keyserlingk had realised the dire need for a complete revival of cultural methods”.

Steiner described his Agriculture Course as: “A course of lectures containing what there is to be said about agriculture from an anthroposophical point of view.” Steiner stated that “the contents of these lectures were to serve, in the first place, as working material for the Association of farmers which had just been founded in the Anthroposophical Society”. Steiner stressed the importance of practical demonstrations: “As to the farmers – well, if they hear of these things from a fellow-farmer, they will say, “What a pity he has suddenly gone crazy!” But eventually when he sees a really good result, he will not feel a very easy conscience in rejecting it outright”.

He empowered the Agricultural Experimental Circle (AEC): “enhance it and develop it by actual experiments and tests. The farmers’ society – the “Experimental Circle” that has been formed – will fix the point of time when in its judgment the tests and experiments are far enough advanced to allow these things to be published”.

He stressed the importance of confidentiality: “No kind of communication was to be made about the contents of the Course until such time as the members of the Association felt impelled to speak out of the results of their own experimental work”. Steiner was cautious because the interests of what we now know as ‘big Ag’ was just starting to put pressure on farmers to use their products. There were spies from the growing industry that wanted to buy up the rights to this new impulse so that they could suppress it. And indeed the Count was very much harassed by those who worked to discredit the  Agricultural Experimental Circle (AEC).

It was critical that a project development plan was set in place at Koberwitz to keep the impulse going, because the Ag Course was never repeated as such, since Steiner was seriously ill. His public life – & life itself, were drawing to a close. The continuing vitality of this vital agricultural impulse was dependent on the successful passing of the baton unto others. The AEC began with 60 members of the Koberwitz Course (out of the course’s total enrollment of 111), with Ernst Stegemann & Carl Keyserlingk appointed by Steiner as chairmen.

By 1929, the Natural Science Section of the Goetheanum reported the positive news that the work of translating Steiner’s ‘hints’ was by then a global enterprise: “Dr. Steiner’s new methods for Agriculture have been investigated and applied on a practical and on an experimental basis.”

Steiner was prophetic in much of what he taught. He presented the farm as “a living organism”. He spoke against a purely chemical view & a chemical reductionist view. Long before the costs of nitrogen pollution were monetized, Steiner, with great vision, put it in a nutshell: “There is a big difference between nitrogen and nitrogen. He spoke of “the degradation of the products of agriculture” & observed that: “Nowadays people simply think that a certain amount of nitrogen is needed for plant growth, and they imagine it makes no difference how it’s prepared or where it comes from. Where it comes from, however, is not a matter of indifference.”

Steiner urged the adoption of a holistic view, & he stated that “we’ve lost the knowledge of what it takes to continue to care for the natural world.” He urged his listeners to take “the macrocosmic approach”& to “see individual plants as parts of a single whole.” He was critical of the approach where living things are “neatly pigeonholed into separate species & genera”, adding: “But that is not how things are in nature. In nature, and actually throughout the universe, everything is in mutual interaction with everything else.”

The most important thing is to make the benefits of our agricultural preparations available to the largest possible areas over the entire earth, so that the earth may be healed and the nutritive quality of its produce improved in every respect. That should be our first objective.~Rudolf Steiner

Food for Thought

~Jeani-Rose Atchison

10:10 Testament – Fuel for our Thought-Seed Egregore:

To direct our consciousness with intent is a magical act…the simple things we do every day can become powerful acts of purpose when our will gives them intention…Our bodies are incredible magical tools, making manifest our focused intent, co-creating with the creator our ultimate reality…we will be using our bodies quite a bit, in this life, for various forms of expression…so let’s tune into the temple of our bodies…To make our will conscious…

Gen Amistad

We can start by taking a deep breath together…Connecting our consciousness, to each other, thru our shared breath, which spreads like roots thru our feet to ground us into the power at the core of our planet…There is a lot of energy inside the belly of the mother…We can, if we use our will, pull it up, into the magical tool of our body, up thru our feet…& as the magnetic power at the core of our earth moves up, our legs, & vibrates into our spine…Feel it attracting the forces above our head like a magnet, pulling down, the energies of all the planets…As we become a conduit, a channel to the forces of the above & the below…

Bente Cathelbound

Open to receive the power of our Day-Star-Sun as it pours into the top of our heads…& the abundant potential of the Full Moon Tides available to us now…Waiting to be programmed by each of us…& as the above & the below meet in our center…Feel it pulsing in your heart…

Varja Jeeves

Then let it expand out from our hearts…To set the energy spinning in the circle of all life…Joining us together as a human community…Spiraling the energy each in our own way, with our own expression of will to make sacred space…A safe haven…A Sanctuary…where there is no judgment…No right or wrong dance step…

Vicki Reed

Every connecting breath, a nurturing refuge, our own inner sanctum…Fostering the expression of compassion & unconditional love for ourselves, each other & our  Mother Earth, striving thru us to become a sacred Star…

Ben Mentele

To fully reveal the essence of our soul, our bodies too must be able to receive & speak the language of the Divine Spirit…Infusing our flesh & bones…Every cell & organ of our body…The very RNA & DNA, with its vitality…Spiritualizing our blood…Immersing our being in the essence of Spirit to Celebrate the Body as the Soul in Action…Living like we mean it…To co-create a life of Peace & Power, & healing Joy…

Holly Hudley

Do we have Sanctuary!?!…Then the circle is complete…Yet always open & ever growing & forever changing…Taking us away from the constraints of clock time…Into the Eternal Time of the Here & Now…Where we are the circle dancing the universe…Blessed be…

545 – Deathday of Saint Clotilde – patron saint of Les Andelys, Normandy. Wife of the Frankish king Clovis I, & princess of the kingdom of Burgundy. In 511, the Queen founded a convent for young girls. The natural spring there is known for healing skin diseases.Queen Clotilde’s cult made her the patron of queens, widows, brides & even those in exile. In Normandy she was venerated as guarding the lame & those who suffered violent death from ill-tempered husbands.

1924 – Deathday of Franz Kafka a German novelist & short story writer, widely regarded as one of the major figures of 20th-century literature. His work, which fuses elements of realism & the fantastic, typically features isolated protagonists faced by bizarre or surrealistic predicaments & incomprehensible social-bureaucratic powers, & has been interpreted as exploring themes of alienation, existential anxiety, guilt, & absurdity. His best known works include “Die Verwandlung” (“The Metamorphosis”), Der Process (The Trial), & Das Schloss (The Castle). The term Kafkaesque has entered the English language to describe situations like those in his writing. Kafka was born into a middle-class, German-speaking Jewish family in Prague, the capital of the Kingdom of Bohemia, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, today part of the Czech Republic. He trained as a lawyer, & after completing his legal education he was employed with an insurance company, forcing him to relegate writing to his spare time. Over the course of his life, Kafka wrote hundreds of letters to family & close friends, including his father, with whom he had a strained & formal relationship. He became engaged to several women but never married. He died in 1924 at the age of 40 from tuberculosis.

“Charis”

Michael Stevens’ The Pentecost (After Maíno)

This season of Whitsun-tide is the world-festival of the NOW, highlighting the challenging relationships of Self & community. How do we work as individuals to transform our ingrained sympathies & antipathies? How do we purify our astral nature in order to make ourselves into a vessel worthy to receive the Holy Spirit, giving us the possibility of manifesting the ‘Spirit Self’ – healing the formative forces of our Life-Spirit, which will provide the capacity to create new social forms..?

Rea Vena

In ancient times the human being experienced the True Self, the Higher I AM, in the cosmos outside of them in the Sun sphere thru initiation, by leaving the body. – This was outpictured in the time of the ancient Summer Solstice Festivals – Which have now become mysteries of St. John the Baptist, where the Spirit is called to become manifest, by applying the powers of the Archangel Uriel.

Alex Fiskgogt

The Whitsun-tide inaugurates a new age, when human beings thru a personal path of self-guided catharsis comes to an awakening of the Higher I AM in “their inmost being” as a force of transformative power, which is the force of love.

The Greek word for grace is, “Charis”, which means the free love from God.

Jonna Powell

This brings us back to the great social question of our time: the individual in relation to the whole – the community, & the cosmos.

Kim Heale

Only by a social & personal catharsis which allows the true spirit of freedom, the true I AM, to eclipse our small personal egotism & the lower impulses of our nature, can a new community & new language of universal sister/brotherhood be created.

Only out of the spiritual recognition of the universal Human Being, will the ideas & applications of a new approach to fraternity in economics; equality in human rights; & freedom in the cultural/spiritual life, be accomplished.

May we strive to serve this goal out of the spirit of The Sophia.

1882 – Deathday of Giuseppe Garibaldi, Italian general & politician. Spoken of as a high initiate in the Hibernian Mysteries in ‘Karmic Relationships’ Vol 1, lec. 11 by Rudolf Steiner (June 2nd is also Festa della Repubblica -The Italian National Republic Day)

One of my fav. stories: “…Garibaldi became acquainted in a most extraordinary way with the woman who was to be the mainstay of his happiness for many years. He was out at sea, on board ship, looking landwards through a telescope. To fall in love through a telescope — that is certainly not the way it happens to most people!

Destiny again made it easy for him to become quickly acquainted with the one whom he had chosen through the telescope to be his beloved. He steered at once in the direction in which he had looked through the telescope, and on reaching land he was invited by a man to a meal. It transpired, after he had accepted the invitation, that this man was the father of the girl he had seen! She could speak only Portuguese, and he only Italian; but we are assured by his biographer, and it seems to be correct, that the young woman immediately understood his carefully phrased declaration of love, which seems to have consisted simply of the words — in Italian of course — “We must unite for life.” She understood immediately. And it really happened so, that from this meeting came a life-companionship that lasted for a long, long time.

Garibaldi’s wife shared in all the terrible and adventurous journeys he made in South America, and some of the recorded details of them are really most moving. For example, the story is told of how a report got about that Garibaldi had been killed in battle. His wife hurried to the battlefield and lifted up every head to see if it were her husband’s. After a long time, and after undergoing many adventures in the search, she found him still alive. It is most affecting to read how on this very journey, which lasted a long time, she gave birth to a child without help of any kind, and how, in order to keep it warm, she bound it in a sling about her neck, holding it against her breast for hours at a time. The story of Garibaldi’s South American adventures has some deeply moving aspects.” ~Rudolf Steiner, KARMIC RELATIONSHIPS I, GA 235
