Retro Fire

The 2019 California wildfires caused less damage than the last two devastating seasons | AccuWeather

The 2020 Mars Retrograde: Are we seeing a sparking in the physical world of these fiery forces burning in the West, that are now going inward..?

Well here we are friends, another mini apocalypse (Remember this word actually mean Revelation!) One of the most import transits of 2020 has begun. What will it bring us? What are the main characteristics of Mars retrograde in Aries ? Well, since the shadow period has started more than a month ago, I think we have begun to get a clue as to what to expect.

Mars Painting by Hans Thoma

When a planet is retrograde, its energies go against the regular flow of things. Usually the astral forces of nature streams from within towards the outside world. But when a planet is retrograde it goes the other way around: from outside toward the within.

mars rules ares - Psychics Blog

Ok so let’s build the picture: Mars in Aries is retrograde (double fire!) Can you sense this intense energy being directed from the external world towards you – causing mainly two things. First, we may feel consumed, enveloped in feelings of anger. Secondly, retrogrades are all about dealing with situations from the past that literally boomerang back.

Examples: A situation that we thought we had successfully overcome, nope, another layer often surfaces to question us again. People we have hurt might retaliate, or suddenly fight back. Or maybe we are struggling in a war of wills, & even though we were holding our ground in a strong position, things might suddenly turn against us & now we are in retreat. It’s a kind of backfire: what goes around comes around.

Pictures of Greek God Ares, the fierce God of War and Defence

On the positive side, Mars retrograde is certainly an opportunity for growth. It’s often good for the warriors to stop fighting each other & retreat to gain a more objective perspective. The truce allows us to rest & recover. And as we take care of our personal wounds, we can also think about what we’ve done, & process how we can bring harmony & healing. The bigger picture begins to take shape. And we may even realize that perhaps we had a bigger part in starting the fight, even if we didn’t mean to.

Mars retrograde asks us: How do we use our strength & energy? How is it received by others? Do we push it too much? Or are we inadvertently aggressive, too choleric? Mars retrograde can be the opportunity to become more aware of our relationship with fire energy.

Let’s take a look at the calendar to outline the key dates and degrees of Mars Retrograde 2020.

Sun 28-06-2020     Mars (29Pis59) --> Aries
Sun 28-06-2020     Mars ( 0Ari13) Sextuple [ 0Aqu13] Saturn
Tue  4-08-2020     Mars (19Ari44) Squ [19Cap44] Jupiter
Thu 13-08-2020     Mars (23Ari04) Squ [23Cap04] Pluto
Mon 24-08-2020     Mars (26Ari19) Squ [26Cap19] Saturn

Thu 10-09-2020     Mars <28Ari08> Station/Retrograde
Tue 29-09-2020     Mars [25Ari20] Squ (25Cap20) Saturn

Thu  7-01-2021     Mars (29Ari59) --> Taurus
Staying Calm in Quicksand: Mars Retrograde and the Capricorn Full Moon – Wolven

The most important Mars retrograde dates are going to be September 29th, October 9th & October 19th. On these dates Mars is going to make a square with Saturn, Pluto & Jupiter respectively, increasing the tension of the transit.

Usually Mars is retrograde for about 70 days. Specifically, Mars in Aries is going to be retrograde from September 10th 2020 at 28° Aries to November 14th 2020 at 15° Aries. These dates don’t take into account the shadow period which we are currently experiencing big time.

Mars was in the pre-shadow period from July 27th 2020 to September 10th 2020. And it is going to be in its post-shadow period from November 14th 2020 to January 3rd 2021.

So my friends, we will have a good amount of time to wrestle with these energies. I propose we work with the grace described by Rudolf Steiner in The Mission of Christian Rosenkreutz, lecture VII. THE MISSION OF GAUTAMA BUDDHA ON MARS

Gods of Directions and Celestial Bodies at Wat Nong Wang - Tim's Thailand

A Conference of the greatest and most advanced Individualities was called together by Christian Rosenkreutz. His most intimate pupil and friend, the great teacher Buddha, participated in these counsels and in the decisions reached. At that spiritual Conference it was resolved that henceforward Buddha would dwell on Mars and there unfold his influence and activity. Buddha transferred his work to Mars in the year 1604. And on Mars he performed a deed similar to that performed by Christ on the Earth in the Mystery of Golgotha. Christian Rosenkreutz had known what the work of Buddha on Mars would signify for the whole Cosmos, what his teachings of Nirvana, of liberation from the Earth would signify on Mars. The teaching of Nirvana was unsuited to a form of culture directed primarily to practical life. Buddha’s pupil, Francis of Assisi, was an example of the fact that this teaching produces in its adepts complete remoteness from the world and its affairs. But the content of Buddhism which was not adapted to the practical life of man between birth and death was of high importance for the soul between death and a new birth. Christian Rosenkreutz realised that for a certain purification needed on Mars, the teachings of Buddha were pre-eminently suitable. The Christ Being, the Essence of Divine Love, had once come down to the Earth to a people in many respects alien, and in the seventeenth century, Buddha, the Prince of Peace, went to Mars — the planet of war and conflict — to execute his mission there. The souls on Mars were warlike, torn with strife. Thus Buddha performed a deed of sacrifice similar to the deed performed in the Mystery of Golgotha by the Bearer of the Essence of Divine Love. To dwell on Mars as Buddha was a deed of sacrifice offered to the Cosmos. He was as it were the lamb offered up in sacrifice on Mars and to accept this environment of strife was for him a kind of crucifixion. Buddha performed this deed on Mars in the service of Christian Rosenkreutz. Thus do the great Beings who guide the world work together, not only on the Earth but from one planet to another.

Since the Mystery of Mars was consummated by Gautama Buddha, human beings have been able to receive different forces from Mars during the corresponding period between death and a new birth. Not only does a man bring with him into a new birth quite different forces from Mars, but because of the influence exercised by the spiritual deed of Buddha, forces also stream from Mars into men who practice meditation as a means for reaching the spiritual world. When the modern pupil of Spiritual Science meditates in the sense indicated by Christian Rosenkreutz, forces sent to the Earth by Buddha as the Redeemer of Mars, stream to him.”

May we tap into, & increase the energies outpictured by the sacrifice of the Buddha, bringing his potent Peace to the god of war within us all. Let us use this time to focus our meditations on taming the fires of Mars, channeling them into a fiery enthusiasm for Truth, Purpose, & the Will for good.

Here are the Soul Calendar verses for week 24 by Rudolf Steiner, Translated by Roy Sdler

v24,
In constant self-creation
the soul grows self-aware;
the spirit of the world moves on
in new self-knowledge re-enlivened,
creating from the darkness of the soul
the harvest of the sense of self
the will brings home.

v29,
To have the inner fire
to kindle thinking’s radiance
and draw the meaning of experience
from worldwide spirit’s well of power
is now for me the summer’s heritage,
is autumn’s peace, and also winter’s hope.

Dorothy Hinkle-Uhlig translated the results of a meditation by Thomas Mayer on the corona virus (covid 19). She received this work in March 2020 from a friend.

  • My (Thomas Mayer) own meditative work and research with the Corona Virus revealed the following: My main intention was to meditate on the waves of fear and here I found many fear elementals that were filling the entire world. They were acting aggressive and very foreign, as if coming from another star. They are not coming from present humanity and this is perhaps why humanity is reacting so strongly, which in turn drives the fear waves further with their own feelings and actions.
  • These elementals belong to the soul level of the corona virus. Since worldwide the attention is directed to them, they go everywhere. This means that through our fear of the virus, it is present everywhere on a soul level.
  • When did these corona virus elementals arise? It was surprising to me to experience that they arose in very old times during the earth incarnation on the old Moon. This is where the angels of today went through their human phase.  Soul substance that had become evil and the related Angels who remained behind and who had come in connection with the Ahriman and the Asuras separated. This separation was necessary for the development of other beings and was accomplished by very strict angels. I assess that they were of the Hierarchy of Exusai.
  • I can experience these strict angels again now. They are the guardians of the corona virus, which is challenging human beings. The angels are of the opinion that the time has come that the separated group, which has been leading an “otherworldly life”, should and can be integrated. They remind us with this of the very old collective unredeemed shadow and make possible the redemption.
  • On January 12, 2020 there was a very special and rare constellation of the planets: a conjunction of Pluto, Saturn, Mercury and the Sun. The emergence of the corona virus correlates with this date. When the planets remind us of the essential, would it not be astonishing when, with that, responsibilities arise.
  • What exactly do the corona virus elementals want? They want to be integrated again into the earth evolution and they want to get to know and experience the Christ. I have had very good experience, when I encountered the corona virus with a positive attitude und showed them the Christ, when I showed them the nature beings, and when I prayed for them the Lord’s Prayer through. They received the impulse well and were ready to transform. At the same time, I had the sense that in the depths of the human being something became more complete.
  • This work is to be continued, because new corona elementals will continually come. Here we have a large mountain to work through.
  • I can recommend these and similar redemption meditations. The atmosphere relaxes immediately. That is the best answer from the Spirit. Each individual contribution changes the collective field and is important.

1919 – Opening of the 1st Waldorf School in Stuttgart “A Ceremony of Cosmic Order”

“We can accomplish our work only if we do not see it as simply a matter of intellect or feeling, but, in the highest sense, as a moral spiritual task. Therefore, you will understand why, as we begin this work today, we first reflect on the connection we wish to create from the very beginning between our activity and the spiritual worlds. With such a task, we must be conscious that we do not work only in the physical plane of living human beings.

In the last centuries, this way of viewing work has increasingly gained such acceptance that it is virtually the only way people see it. This understanding of tasks has made teaching what it is now and that the work before us should improve. Thus, we wish to begin our preparation by first reflecting upon how we connect with the spiritual powers in whose service and in whose name each one of us must work. I ask you to understand these introductory words as a kind of prayer to those powers who stand behind us with Imagination, Inspiration and Intuition as we take up this task.

It is our duty to see the importance of our work. We will do this if we know that this school is charged with a particular task. We need to make our thoughts very concrete; we need to form our thoughts so that we can be conscious that this school fulfills something special. We can do this only when we do not view the founding of this school as an everyday occurrence, but instead regard it as a ceremony held within Cosmic Order. In this sense, I wish, in the name of the good spirit whose task it is to lead humanity out of suffering and misery, in the name of this good spirit whose task it is to lead humanity to a higher level of development in education. I wish to give the most heartfelt thanks to this good spirit who has given our dear friend Mr. Molt the good thoughts to do what he has done for the further development of humanity at this time and in this place, and what he has done for the Waldorf School. We are united with him in feeling the greatness of the task and of the moment in which it is begun, and in feeling that this is a festive moment in Cosmic Order, he will be able to work in our midst with the necessary strength.

We wish to begin our work with this in mind. We wish to see each other as human beings brought together by karma, who will bring about, not something common, but something that, for those doing this work, will include the feeling of a festive Cosmic moment. ~Rudolf Steiner, ‘The Foundations of Human Experience’.

Dear friends in all the hubbub around HWW I forgot to share Roy Sadler’s good thoughts & translation of the Calendar of the Soul for last week:

‘Dear Hazel,
I trust you and your dear friends have had an enlightening weekend.
May its thunder wave on into new opportunities for all of you.
With a long interest in Isis, your quest to unravel her mysteries led me
yesterday to read on the rsarchive Steiner’s 1917-18 Christmas & Epiphany
lectures. Wonderful! And it came to me at about 10.30pm GMT
at the time you were Lifting the veil on Isis and Sophia that maybe
they could be revealed in this week’s Soul Calendar verse
(in a turning point within it I was anyway not sure how to make).
Could this be a 21st century translation for the future of our spirit
and how we will endow it in ourselves?’

With my best wishes for your safe circle, and for my own and for everyone’s, and for our ability to embrace the mirror of each other and also strive to free the fruits of Isis and find the strength of will to work for our beleaguered world.

Platonism - Wikiwand

Deathday of Albinus a Platonist philosopher, who lived at Smyrna, pupil of Gaius the Platonist & teacher of Galen.  A short tract by him, entitled Introduction to Plato’s dialogues, has survived. After explaining the nature of the Dialogue, which he compares to a Drama, he  goes on to divide the Dialogues of Plato into four classes, logical, critical, physical, ethical, & mentions another division of them into Tetralogies, according to their subjects. He advises that the Alcibiades, Phaedo, Republic, & Timaeus, should be read in a series

Jane Addams: the activist who set a foundation for modern social work | Personal Investments | The Guardian

1860 – Birthday of Jane Addams, sociologist & author, Nobel Prize laureate – I have a soft spot for this powerful lady – I went to Jane Addams Jr. High & the Hull House museum is close to where I live in Chicago. Jane Addams life’s work still resonates in a big way today. Social worker, suffragette & activist are just some of the titles that apply to her. In 1889, Jane founded a social settlement called Hull House, which supported thousands of people each week – mainly immigrants, the poor & the dispossessed. It became a model for similar communities in the future.

Flashback: At a time when immigrants were feared, Chicago's Hull House nurtured the lives of the foreign-born - Chicago Tribune

Jane studied medicine as a young adult but decided that wasn’t her calling. She was inspired during a trip to London when she visited the world’s first settlement house, Toynbee Hall. Within months, she opened the doors to a similar facility in her hometown of Chicago.

Set up Hull Houses for 2013 - Chicago Tribune

Originally conceived to give immigrants & the poor access to the arts, Hull House evolved according to the community’s needs. Along the way, Jane also challenged corrupt local officials, investigated health issues and lobbied against unfair laws.

Catching Up With History at Jane Addams' Hull-House

Jane was way ahead of her time, a person who was making inquiries & putting her money where her mouth was into figuring out enormous social problems. She made a lot of progress in ways that are still really resonant. The legacy started at Hull House lives on, from juvenile courts & labor laws to playgrounds & public sanitation. The Mother of Social Work set a standard for how to help others.

Preparing for Michaelmas:

I watch the shadows lengthen. The angle of the sun, like the lance of Michael, a sunlit spear piercing awake my sleepy summer eyes, banishing the sulphur, activating the iron in my blood. Am I ready to do battle with the dragon within?

If spiritual science is allowed to live in us & extend its transforming influence to our heart-space, what enters us as thoughts, is then changed, into the substance of light, into the purest light of thought. And in the living enthusiasm of the heart, this light of thought then rays out from our hearts into the macrocosm, as light of the redeemed intelligence of Michael; as enlivened human thought, which can be re-united with the world-thoughts of the gods.

Heart-Thinking is the essence of Michaelmas, as the festival of Enlightenment; where we can learn to experience an unfolding of our inner initiative & a free, strong, courageous will, opposing our love of ease. Yes, it’s easy this time of year, to want to get cozy on the couch, to snuggle up with the dragon, flipping thru the channels, fighting over the remote…

But it is our job to strive to complete the never ending story, with the new Michaelic mysteries put forth by Rudolf Steiner, a true emissary of Michael, teaching us to count the human being as the 10th hierarchy. And so, work we must, as we stand once more on the edge of autumn.

See you there…

Enkindle the Force of Michael

Paintings by Rudolf Steiner
Rudolf Steiner

At Michaelmas, 1923, for the last time in his earthly life as Rudolf Steiner, this great, humble initiate, was able to fully celebrate a Michaelmas festival, in Vienna, the capital city of his own homeland, where he had spent so many fruitful years in his youth. Much of Germany, including Berlin, was cut off from him in that year of uncontrolled inflation, but there in Vienna he could feel himself truly at home, as he re-founded the Anthroposophical Society in Austria & gave wonderful lectures on the human Gemüt. (The dictionary translates Gemüt as “heart, soul, mind,” seeming to imply, “take your choice.” But the word Gemüt must not be thought of as having these 3 separate meanings, but rather as a unified concept embracing all 3. We can think of Gemüt, as something like: the mind warmed by a loving heart, stimulated by the soul’s imaginative power. It might also be described as the soul in a state of intuition arising from the working together of heart & mind with courage.

It is a very beautiful & comprehensive word which every student of anthroposophy must strive to be on intimate terms with.  Steiner tells us: “This human Gemüt dwells in the very center of the soul life.

The Michael Mystery : Dr Rudolf Steiner : 9781621481225

In his Christmas letter in 1924 to the members, which form part of the ‘Michael Mystery’, Steiner emphasized in a single marvelously compressed paragraph the task of humanity in the middle period of the age of the consciousness soul in which we are now living.

In its essential nature the Spiritual Soul (Consciousness Soul) is not cold. It seems to be so only at the commencement of its unfolding, because at that stage it can only reveal the light-element in its nature, and not as yet the cosmic warmth in which it has indeed its origin.”

This cosmic warmth must now be breathed out by all of us into our observation of the external world. Not only must we understand the world objectively in the manner of a spiritual scientist, but we must enter into this understanding with our life of feeling, to wrest the world from Ahriman’s clutches, filling it with the Christ forces working from within ourselves.

Cleverness, then, has been furnished in abundance by the last few centuries; but what we need today is warmth of Gemüt, and this anthroposophy can provide. When someone studying anthroposophy says it leaves him cold, he reminds me of one who keeps piling wood in the stove and then complains that the room doesn’t get warm. Yet all he needs to do is to kindle the wood, then it will get warm. Anthroposophy can be presented, and it is the good wood of the soul; but it can be enkindled only by each within himself. What everyone must find in his Gemüt is the match wherewith to light anthroposophy. Anthroposophy is in truth warm and ardent: it is the very soul of the Gemüt; and he who finds this anthroposophy cold and intellectual and matter-of-fact just lacks the means of kindling it so it may pervade him with its fire. And just as only a little match is needed to light ordinary wood, so anthroposophy, too, needs only a little match. But this will enkindle the force of Michael in man.” ~ Rudolf Steiner ‘Michaelmas & the Soul forces of man’ lecture 2 September 28, 1923 (GA 223)

In ‘Michaelmas and the Soul-Forces of Man’ Steiner describes just how it is possible to enter into the external world with love, endowing it with soul-warmth, & in the process learning also to celebrate a new kind of Autumn Festival in which Michael can truly participate.

Moon near Mars on September 4, 5 and 6, 2020.

4 September 2020 – “Speaking with the Stars”: Friends, we’ll be able to see Bella Luna & Mars in conjunction on the nights of September 4-6. By now the Full Corn Moon will be waning (it’ll be around 86% lit) & will be visible next to Mars as evening twilight ebbs into darkness. but 1st comes Jupiter & Saturn, with Jupiter being the brighter of two. (For the fun of it, Uranus is shown there too. It’s theoretically visible to the eye, but requires a very dark sky – and no nearby moon – to be seen) Look for the moon & Mars to be up by mid-evening, by around 9 or 10 pm. If you have an obstructed eastern horizon, it could be a little later. And once the moon & Mars are up, they will be out for rest of the night.

Rudolf Steiner’s Lectures on this day

ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY (inspired by Rudolf Steiner’s Original Calendar of the Soul: “What is presented here can be useful to those who wish to follow the path of humankind’s spiritual development“)

Birth & Death-day of MOSES (from Rudolf Steiner’s Calendar of the Soul):

According to Egyptian astrologers, the liberator of the children of Israel was to be born on this day- So all the male children were to be thrown into the water by order of King Pharaoh.  JochebedAmram‘s wife, mother of Miriam, & Aaron,  gave birth to her third child, a boy that morning at sunrise. Right from that moment the house was filled with a radiant light, so they knew he was an extraordinary child. After three months, Jochebed saw that she would not be able to conceal her child any longer. So she made a small, water-proof basket & set him down among the papyrus reeds growing on the brink of the Nile. Miriam remained nearby to watch the baby.

The day was hot, & King Pharaoh’s daughter, Bithya, came out to the river, accompanied by her maids, to take a bath in the cool waters of the Nile. Suddenly, she heard the wailing of a small child, & she found the basket. Intrigued by the child’s beauty, Bithya tried to figure out a way to enable her to keep him for herself & save him from death, for she understood that this boy was from a Jewish family.

The child refused to be nursed by any of the Egyptian maids-in-waiting, & continued to weep. At this moment, Miriam came over to the princess & offered to find a Jewish nurse. Bithya was glad of this solution, so Miriam rushed home & brought her mother Jochebed, to be his ‘nurse’. For two years the baby was left in his mother’s care.

Meanwhile Bithya told Pharaoh about the boy she had adopted. Her father did not object as he felt sure that the danger had already been averted years ago. So Moses was taken to the royal court, where he grew up as the princely adopted son of the Pharaoh’s daughter.

Once it happened that Moses was playing on King Pharaoh’s lap. He saw the shining crown, studded with jewels, reached for it & took it off. Pharaoh, asked his astrologers for the meaning of this action. They interpreted it to mean that Moses was a threat to Pharaoh’s crown & suggested that the child be put to death before it could do any harm. But one of the king’s counselors suggested that they should first test the boy to see whether his action was prompted by an evil intelligence, or if he was merely grasping for sparkling things as any other child would.

Pharaoh agreed to this, & two bowls were set down before young Moses. One contained gold & jewels, & the other held glowing fire-coals. Moses reached out for the gold, but an angel re-directed his hand to the coals. Moses snatched a glowing coal & put it to his lips. He burned his hand & tongue, but his life was saved.

After that fateful test, Moses suffered from a slight speech defect. He could not become an orator, but G‑d’s words that were spoken to him & with the help of his brother Aaron & sister Miriam, he was able to fulfill his mission.

At age 20, Moses fled Egypt after killing an Egyptian he saw beating a Jew &made his way to Midian, where he married Zipporah, the daughter of Jethro, & fathered two sons, Gershom & Eliezer.

When he was 80 years old, Moses was shepherding his father-in-law’s sheep when G‑d revealed himself to him in a burning bush at Mount Horeb (Sinai) & instructed him to liberate the Children of Israel. Moses took the Israelites out of Egypt, performed numerous miracles for them (the ten plagues in Egypt, the splitting of the sea, extracting water from a rock, bringing down the manna, etc), received the Torah from G‑d & taught it to the people, built the Mishkan (Divine dwelling) in the desert, & led the Children of Israel for 40 years as they journeyed through the wilderness; but G‑d did not allow him to bring them into the Holy Land. Moses passed away on his 120th birthday on Mount Nebo, within sight of the land he yearned to enter.

According to Konrad Burdach, Rudolf Steiner connects Moses in a later incarnation as Goethe, in a special lecture in the GA 138 series

Saint Rosalia of Palermo |

1150 – Feast day of St. Rosalia – born of a Norman noble family that claimed descent from Charlemagne. Devoutly religious, she retired to live as a hermit in a cave on Mount Pellegrino, where she died alone in 1166. Tradition says that she was led to the cave by two angels. On the cave wall she wrote “I, Rosalia, daughter of Sinibald, Lord of Roses, and Quisquina, have taken the resolution to live in this cave for the love of my Lord, Jesus Christ.”

In 1624, a plague beset Palermo. During this hardship Saint Rosalia appeared first to a sick woman, then to a hunter, to whom she indicated where her remains were to be found. She ordered him to bring her bones to Palermo and have them carried in procession through the city.

The hunter climbed the mountain & found her bones in the cave as described. He did what she had asked in the apparition. After her remains were carried around the city three times, the plague ceased. After this Saint Rosalia was venerated as the patron saint of Palermo, & a sanctuary was built in the cave where her remains were discovered.

On September 4 there is a tradition of walking barefoot from Palermo up to Mount Pellegrino.  In Italian American communities in the United States, the September feast brings large numbers of visitors annually to the Bensonhurst section of Brooklyn in New York City.

Jeremiah French

As Goethe’s Fairy tale says: ‘The Time is at Hand‘! This is true for many initiatives started a 100 years ago by Rudolf Steiner, including the 3-folding of the Social Realm.

From the Spiritual-Educational-Cultural Sphere, I feel a strong calling that this applies most pointedly also to the sharing of The ‘New Isis Myth’.

The Truth & Power of ‘The Word’ must be Resurrected thru our striving to Activate the Wisdom of Anthropo-Sophia within each of us, bringing Light to Love.

Feast day in remembrance of the Beheading of John The Baptist

The Invention of Christianity: The First 500 Years by Tom Lee – What did Jesus think?

John the Baptist, truly the greatest of all Men – Still human, He hovers as an Eagle in the realm of the Angels. After his beheading He became the protector of the 12 disciples of Jesus Christ & especially of John the Evangelist.

Did the Eagle land in the beginning of the 20th century on the shoulder of Rudolf Steiner to guide him towards the Second Coming?

The Prophet Elijah | Petit Palais

“Elijah was destined to be one of the ruling figures in the régime inaugurated by Moses. There had to be Individualities who were not wholly contained in the human personality; one part of their being was in the earthly personality and the other in the spiritual world. Elijah was an Individuality of this nature. Only part of his being was present in his personality on the physical plane; the Ego-hood of Elijah could not penetrate fully into his physical body. He must therefore be called a personality ‘filled with the Spirit’. A figure such as Elijah could not possibly be brought into existence through the normal forces by which other men are placed in the world. In the normal way the human being develops in the mother’s body in such a way that through physical processes the Individuality who has been incarnated previously simply unites with the physical embryo. This could not be so in the case of an Individuality such as Elijah. Other forces had to intervene, concerned with the part of the Individuality that reached into the spiritual world. His development was necessarily attended by influences working upon him from outside. Hence when such Individualities are incarnated they appear as men who are ‘inspired’, ‘impelled by the Spirit’. They appear as ecstatic personalities whose utterances far surpass anything that might issue from their normal intelligence.

The man who lived as ‘Elijah’ was an outstanding example of this. The words uttered by his mouth and the actions performed by his hands did not proceed only from the part of his being actually present in his personality; they were manifestations of divine-spiritual Beings in the background.

When this Individuality was born again he was to unite with the body of the child born to Zacharias and Elisabeth. We know from the Gospel itself that John the Baptist is to be regarded as the reborn Elijah. But in him we have to do with an Individuality who in his earlier incarnations had not habitually developed or brought fully into operation all the forces present in the normal course of life. In the normal course of life the inner power or force of the Ego becomes active while the physical body of the human being is developing in the mother’s womb. The Elijah-Individuality in earlier times had not descended deeply enough to be involved in the inner processes operating here. The Ego had not, as in normal circumstances, been stirred into activity by its own forces, but from outside. This was now to happen again. But the Ego was now farther from the spiritual world and nearer to the Earth, much more closely connected with the Earth than the Beings who had formerly guided Elijah. The transition leading to the amalgamation of the Buddha-stream with the Zarathustra-stream was now to be brought about.

Everything was to be rejuvenated. Thus it was the Nirmanakaya of Buddha which now stirred the Ego-force of John into activity, having the same effect as spiritual forces that had formerly worked upon Elijah. At certain times the being known as Elijah had been rapt in states of ecstasy; then the God spoke, filling his Ego with a force which could be communicated to the outer world. Now again a spiritual force was present — the Nirmanakaya of Buddha hovering above the head of the Nathan Jesus; this force worked upon Elisabeth when John was to be born, stimulated within her the embryo of John in the sixth month of pregnancy, and wakened the Ego. But being nearer to the Earth this force now worked as more than an inspiration; it had an actual formative effect upon the Ego of John. Under the influence of the visit of her who is there called ‘Mary’, the Ego of John the Baptist awoke into activity. The Nirmanakaya of Buddha was here working upon the Ego of the former Elijah — now the Ego of John the Baptist — wakening it and penetrating right into the physical substance.” ~Rudolf Steiner, from The Gospel of St. Luke

ustave Moreau

“If we pass on to the sixth chapter of Mark we hear fully described how King Herod had John the Baptist beheaded. The tortured conscience of Herod arouses a strange foreboding in him. When he hears all that has occurred through Christ Jesus he says, “John, whom I beheaded, has been restored to life!” Herod feels that, though the physical personality of John had gone away, he is now all the more present! He feels that his atmosphere, his spirituality — which was none other than the spirituality of Elijah, is still there. His tormented conscience causes him to be aware that John the Baptist, that is, Elijah, is still there.

But then something strange happens. We are shown how, after John the Baptist had met his physical death, Christ Jesus came to the very neighborhood where John had worked. I want you to take particular notice of a remarkable passage and not to skim over it lightly, for the words of the Gospels are not written for rhetorical effect, nor journalistically. Something very significant is said here. Jesus Christ appears among the throng of followers and disciples of John the Baptist, and this fact is expressed in a sentence to which we must give careful attention: “And as Jesus came out He saw a great crowd,” by which could be meant only the disciples of John, “and He had compassion on them …” (Mark 6:34.) Why compassion? Because they had lost their master, they were there without John, whose headless corpse we are told had been carried to his grave. But even more precisely is it said, “for they were like sheep who had lost their shepherd. And He began to teach them many things.” It cannot be indicated any more clearly how He teaches John’s disciples. He teaches them because the spirit of Elijah, which is at the same time the spirit of John the Baptist, is still active among them. Thus it is again indicated with dramatic power in these significant passages of the Mark Gospel how the spirit of Christ Jesus entered into what had been prepared by the spirit of Elijah-John. Even so this is only one of the main points, around which many other significant things are grouped.

File:Saint Jean-Baptiste au désert, Raphaël (Louvre INV 606) 01.jpg - Wikimedia Commons
Raphael

I will now call your attention to one thing more. I have several times pointed out how this spirit of Elijah or John continued to act in such a way as to impress its impulses into world history. I have often mentioned that the soul of Elijah-John appeared again in the painter Raphael. This is one of those facts that call attention to the metamorphoses of souls that take place under the impetus given by the Mystery of Golgotha. Because it was also necessary that in the post-Christian era such a soul should work in Raphael through the medium of a single personality; what in ancient times was so comprehensive and world encompassing now appears in such a different personality as that of Raphael. Can we not feel that the aura that hovered round Elijah-John is also present in Raphael? That in Raphael there were such similarities to these two others that we could even say that this element was too great to be able to enter into a single personality but hovered round it, so that the revelations received by this personality seemed like an illumination? Such was indeed the case with Raphael!” ~Rudolf Steiner, Gospel of Mark: Lecture 3

“The truth is, my dear friends, this earthly personality of Raphael was completely yielded up and was only present through what Lazarus-John gave to this soul to be poured out into colour and line for all mankind.

Such was the life of this being. And it was so, that this Raphael life could only be, as it were, absolved in another life of thirty years — in Novalis. And so we see Raphael die young, Novalis die young — one being, who came forth from Elijah-John, appearing before mankind in two different forms, preparing through art and through poetry the true Michael mood of soul, sent down by the Michael stream as messenger to men on Earth.

And now we behold the wonderful artistic power of Raphael come to life again in Novalis in poetry that stirs and enraptures the hearts of men. All that through Raphael was given to human eyes to see, — of this could human hearts drink deep, when it came again in self portrait of Novalis.

Novalis - Wikipedia

When we consider the life of Novalis, what an echo we find there of the Raphael life for which Hermann Grimm had so fine an understanding! His beloved dies in her youth. He is himself still young. What is he going to do with his life now that she has died? He tells us himself. He says that his life on Earth will be henceforth to “die after her”, to follow her on the way of death. He wants to pass over already now into the super-sensible, to lead again the Raphael life, not touching the Earth, but living out in poetry his magic idealism. He would fain not let himself be touched by Earth life.

When we read the “Fragments” of Novalis, and give ourselves up to the life that flows so abundantly in them, we can discover the secret of the deep impression they make on us. Whatever we have before us in immediate sense-reality, whatever the eye can see and recognise as beautiful — all this, through the magic idealism that lives in the soul of Novalis, appears in his poetry with a well-nigh heavenly splendour. The meanest and simplest material thing — with the magic idealism of his poetry he can make it live again in all its spiritual light and glory.

And so we see in Novalis a radiant and splendid forerunner of that Michael stream which is now to lead you all, my dear friends, while you live; and then, after you have gone through the gate of death, you will find in the spiritual super-sensible worlds all those others — among them also the being of whom I have been speaking to you today — all those with whom you are to prepare the work that shall be accomplished at the end of the century, and that shall lead mankind past the great crisis in which it is involved”. The Last Address given by Rudolf Steiner The Individuality of Elias, John, Raphael, Novalis, Dornach, Michaelmas Eve, 1924
