Lift the Veil

Penny Leggner

On this All Hallows Eve, do you have the courage to look beyond the mask of the material world, into the spirit realm, the place of our beginning, the time of our unborness, the abode of our ending, when we shuffle off this mortal coil, only to begin again & yet again, as we strive toward the eternal…?

Take Heart - Gallery - TJM | The Art Sherpa
Mat Bouten

Take heart my friends, for every ending is a new beginning. At All Hallows–tide we stand at the Cross Quarter between Autumn Equinox & Winter Solstice, a time when great transformations are possible. Since with the veils between the worlds so thin, the power of all the worlds are available to us.

Initiation Acrylic Painting By Ulrich Osterloh | absolutearts.com

What is it like to bring awareness to this most important human initiation, this true rite-of-passage? Can we work to consciously “Cross the Threshold”, as we do in meditation, in sleep & ultimately in our life between death & rebirth..?

Katlyn Breene

As far back as ancient Persia, Mesopotamia & Sumeria, we find many initiation myths like the Epic of Gilgamesh, & the Descent of Inanna, that describe communicating with the dead & a journey to the underworld.

Egyptian Book of the Dead (Plus Facts) - Give Me History

In Ancient Egypt we find: The Book of the Dead = ‘Book of Coming Forth by Day’ also called the ‘Book of Emerging Forth into the Light’; an ancient Egyptian funeral text illustrated with vignettes depicting the deceased & their journey in the afterlife. It was placed in the coffin or burial chamber. The Book consists of a number of magic spells intended to assist a dead person’s journey through the Duat, or underworld, & into the afterlife. It was written by many priests over a period of over a 1000 years.

Perhaps since in our time now we are recapitulating this epoch we might gain insight by looking into this text with modern eyes.

From ancient Greece we have the story of Demeter & Persephone, as Queen of the Underworld, connected to the secret festival of Thesmophoria, celebrated exclusively by the women. They dressed in white robes & observed strict chastity before & after the ceremony. According to Greek mythology, Demeter’s daughter, Persephone, was gathering flowers one autumn day when she was taken by Pluto, god of the underworld, to his subterranean kingdom. This was re-enacted as an initiation rite of death & resurrection. The 2nd night the women fasted & lowered wild boar, sacred to the goddess Circe & Hecate, into chasms in the earth as a sacrifice.

Francis Davis Millet

On the 3rd night the bones from former festivals were placed on altars & mixed with seed corn, which was then sown in the fields as a kind of magical fertilizer to ensure a good crop. Then they had a big feast. They would also cast herbs on their beds & sit on the ground to promote the fertility of the corn.

Although this festival was sacred & solemn, there was a lot of rather bawdy jokes in the style of the wild Crone Baubo, the sexually liberated Goddess of Mirth, who jested with Demeter to try & cheer her up after the loss of her daughter, & get her to bring fertility back to the earth again.

Paul Sérusier

The Romans had a similar festival in honor of Ceres. Also with the Eleusinian mysteries, we see initiation rites enacted to gain inspiration from the gods & the ancestors.

October Full Hunter's Moon Painting by Robin Samiljan
Robin Samiljan

The full moon of October is known as the Hunter’s or Blood Moon. And this year it’s a Blue Moon, the 2nd in the month. Traditionally, the hunters would be out in force. After the end of the breeding season, & before the severe weather comes to kill off many of these creatures anyway, they were taken for the cooking-pot, to supplement what might otherwise be a rather meager winter diet.

With all this death around, it is not surprising that people’s thoughts turned to human death.

The Celtics call All Hallows Eve or Samhain their New Year. Autumn is also the time of the Islamic New Year.  Likewise for the Jewish people, with their New Year Rosh Hashanah; & at the end of the High Holy days Sukkot is celebrated, where they build a hut & invite the ancestors & the elemental beings to come to the feast. When you think about it, it makes sense to let the old year die away like the plant life, during this transition into the dark.

It is also traditional to look toward the future, & to dress up as what you want to Become for the New Year. To ask questions, like: Who have I been? Who am I now? & where am I going…? Who do I want to become?

And these are the kind of questions we can ask our beloved dead.

In Wales the souls of the dead are known as ‘the Silent Company’, but when they are welcomed with bwyd cennad y meinv, “the food for the embassy of the dead.” They become our helpers.

We can think of our ancestral allies in 3 ways:

 1. Ancestors of the Blood – A common ancestral guide is a relative whom you knew & had some kind of positive connection with in this lifetime, quite often a loving grandparent or great-grandparent.

2. Ancestors of the Soul – This is an ancestral guide from a past life who may have been some kind of teacher or mentor to you.

3. Ancestors of Humanity – These were heroes whose lives were dedicated to the service of human evolution, like Casper Hauser or Jeanne d’Arc. They can be called upon in times of crisis, as Dion Fortune & her group called upon King Arthur & Merlin during the 2nd World War. (I will speak more about this as we near election day)

Dear friends, let’s take this opportunity to part the veil – letting go of our sense bound thinking, to consciously work with our spiritual helpers in this time of need. Let us set the table with our intention to join together in communion to celebrate the feast of life in all its aspects; as we build a picture of wholeness on the inner planes, which will ray out into all worlds.

ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

All-an-tide (Cornwall)

The first day of All-hallows-tide, observed until November 7 (Western Christianity)

Halloween (Ireland, Canada, United Kingdom, United States etc…)

Hop-tu-Naa is a Celtic festival celebrated in the Isle of Man on 31 October. Predating Halloween, it is the celebration of the original New Year’s Eve (Oie Houney). It is thought to be the oldest unbroken tradition in the Isle of Man

Samhain is a Gaelic festival marking the end of the harvest season & the beginning of winter or the “darker half” of the year. It is the cross quarter between the autumn equinox & the winter solstice.

Image result for The Mound of the Hostages

The Mound of the Hostages, a Neolithic passage tomb at the Hill of Tara, is aligned with the Samhain sunrise. It is mentioned in some of the earliest Irish literature & many important events in Irish mythology happen or begin on Samhain.

It was the time when cattle were brought back down from the summer pastures & when livestock were slaughtered for the winter. As at Beltane, special bonfires were lit.

Like Beltane, Samhain was seen as a liminal time, when the boundary between this world & the Otherworld could more easily be crossed. This meant the Aos Sí, the ‘spirits’ or ‘fairies’, could more easily come into our world. Offerings of food & drink were left outside for them.

The souls of the dead were also thought to revisit their homes seeking hospitality. Feasts were had, at which the souls of dead kin were beckoned to attend & a place set at the table for them.

Mumming & guising were part of the festival, & involved people going door-to-door in costume (or in disguise), often reciting verses in exchange for food.

Divination rituals & games were also a big part of the festival.

The first day of the Day of the Dead, celebrated until November 2 (Spanish: Día de Muertos) The multi-day holiday focuses on gatherings of family to pray for & remember members who have died, & help support their spiritual journey.

Traditions connected with the holiday include building private altars called ofrendas, honoring the deceased using sugar skulls, marigolds, & the favorite foods & beverages of the departed, & visiting graves with these as gifts. Visitors also leave possessions of the deceased at the graves.

Scholars trace the origins of the modern Mexican holiday to indigenous observances dating back hundreds of years and to an Aztec festival dedicated to the goddess Mictecacihuatl. The holiday has spread throughout the world, being absorbed within other deep traditions for honoring the dead.

On this day in 683 AD: The Kaaba, the holiest site in Islam, is burned to the ground

683 – During the Siege of Mecca, the Kaaba, catches fire & burns down. The literal meaning of the Arabic word ka`bah (كَعْبَة) is “cube”, or “House of God”, considered the most sacred site in Islam, a similar role to the Tabernacle & Holy of Holies in Judaism.

502 years ago, on Oct. 31, 1517, the story goes, that the small-town monk, Martin Luther, marched up to the castle church in Wittenberg & nailed his ‘95 Theses’ to the door, lighting the flame of the Reformation — the split between the Catholic & Protestant churches. Luther’s act is one of the cornerstones of world history, & remains a lasting symbol of resistance.

Nearly all of American history bears the imprint of that act of protest. Luther’s challenge, the protection he obtained, & the reformers he inspired laid the foundation for the establishment of colonial America.

In 1934, an African American pastor from Georgia made the trip of a lifetime, sailing across the Atlantic Ocean, through the gates of Gibraltar, and across the Mediterranean Sea to the Holy Land. After this pilgrimage, he traveled to Berlin, attending an international conference of Baptist pastors. While in Germany, this man — who was named Michael King — became so impressed with what he learned about the reformer Martin Luther that he decided to do something dramatic. He offered the ultimate tribute to the man’s memory by changing his own name to Martin Luther King. His 5-year-old son was also named Michael — and to the son’s dying day his closest relatives would still call him Mike — but not long after the boy’s father changed his own name, he decided to change his son’s name too, & Michael King Jr. became known to the world as Martin Luther King Jr.

Another dynamic measure of the influence of Martin Luther is the quintessentially modern idea of the individual — of our personal responsibility before ourselves & our God, rather than before any institution, whether church or stateThis was as unthinkable before Luther. The contemporary idea of “The People,” along with the democratic impulse that proceeds from it –  The more recent ideas of pluralism, religious liberty, & self-government all entered history through the door that Luther opened.

Luther’s second unyielding act of courage was at the ‘imperial diet’ held in the city of Worms in 1521, when he made it clear that he feared God’s judgment more than the judgment of church leaders in that room.

And suddenly the individual had the freedom & possibility of thinking for themselves.

Martin Luther was not inclined to tilt at papal windmills. In fact, until about 1520 he was a vigorous champion of the church. He desired desperately to help Rome elude the fate it ended up experiencing. In fact, in a case of Oedipusian irony he became the very man who brought about everything he had hoped to avoid. As his story illustrates, it was a sublime & ridiculous decoction of forces that created the perfect storm that burst over the European continent, creating what we now call the Reformation.

Today the Catholic & Lutheran churches are taking the memory of 1517 in hand. Pope Francis joined leaders of the Lutheran World Federation in Sweden to hold a joint service in a spirit of unity after 500 years of division.

& Special Guests

Soul to Soul’ Festival with the Central Regional Council & Special Guests 1pm – 3pm CDT (2pm – 4pm EDT) All Hallows Eve, Saturday October 31st, 2020

Every culture has a festival celebrating their Beloved Dead. For deep in our bones we know that those who have passed through the gates of death want to work with us on the physical world, reminding us that everything physical is an outer expression of spirit.

During this time of year the veils between the worlds are thin, and the spiritual realm beckons. Having put the iron will of Michael to work in our thinking, we now have the courage to look beyond the veil of the material world into the spirit realm, the place of our beginning and our ending, only to begin again and yet again…for every ending is a new beginning.

We will open with some poetry and music played by Carol Kelly, followed by an enactment of an original script by Hazel Archer-Ginsberg, based on indications from Spiritual Science.

We will go into small breakout groups to explore the theme: “Who do you want to be in the new year”.

Stay Awake

The Great Reset or the Great Divide? | Alliance For Natural Health

Dear friends – More & more evidence of the wide spread implications of the ‘plandemic’ are emerging, but perhaps like me, you are feeling overwhelmed & can’t read another article, or watch another video. We have our little routines in place that keep us feeling safe; we do our meditations & eurythmy etc…All the while the “Great Reset” is rolling out its strategy, often under the guise of helping.

If we can will ourselves to stay awake & grounded & continue to name the adversarial forces, along with building our light-body thru Love & positivity, we can become our own force for good, attracting the true help we need from the Spiritual world. With that in mind I am called to share 2 (well ok 3) extremely important things to be aware of, so that we don’t let the wolf pull the wool over our eyes:

From the NY Times yesterday 29 October 2020:  ‘The idea of modifying Earth’s atmosphere to cool the planet — solar geoengineering — was once seen as too risky to seriously consider. Now, it’s attracting new money and attention. One expert likened it to “chemotherapy for the planet.”

The sky over the northeast Pacific area streaked with clouds that form around the particles from ship exhaust.
from the article: The sky over the northeast Pacific area streaked with clouds that form around the particles from plane exhaust’. Credit…NASA Earth Observatory

WTF! Have you ever known someone who has had Chemotherapy? They get sick as hell, & it often kills them, 1st destroying their god given immune system, depleting their etheric body. Friends, is this another ploy to kill the Christ in the earth’s etheric realm?

Ok, breathe…

Now is the time for a 'great reset' of capitalism | World Economic Forum

Here is an article from Dr. Mercola laying out what this “Great Reset” really is:

STORY AT-A-GLANCE

  • “The Great Reset” is a new “social contract” that ties you to it through an electronic ID linked to your bank account and health records, and a “social credit” ID that will dictate every facet of your life
  • While the COVID-19 pandemic is being used as a justification for the Great Reset movement, the agenda has nothing to do with health and everything to do with a long-term plan to monitor and control the world through digital surveillance and artificial intelligence
  • The Great Reset and the Fourth Industrial Revolution are rebranded terms for technocracy and the old “New World Order” melded with the transhumanist movement
  • Technocracy is an economic system of resource allocation that revolves around technology — in particular artificial intelligence, digital surveillance and Big Data collection — and the digitization of industry and government, which in turn allows for the automation of social engineering and social rule, thereby doing away with the need for democratically elected leadership
  • While the real plan is to usher in a tech-driven dystopia free of democratic controls, they speak of this plan as a way to bring us back into harmony with nature.
WHO Cautions Lifting Coronavirus Restrictions as Trump Claims Authority to Reopen U.S. | National News | US News
STORY AT-A-GLANCE (old news, but still important to remember)
  • A report by Dr. Peter Breggin reveals Dr. Anthony Fauci’s ties to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and globalists who have profited from the pandemic measures promoted by him as the leader of the U.S. Coronavirus Task Force
  • Fauci has been the major force behind research activities that enabled the Chinese Communist Party to manufacture lethal SARS coronaviruses, which in turn led to the release — whether accidental or not — of SARS-CoV-2 from the Wuhan Institute of Virology
  • In collaboration with the CCP and the World Health Organization, Fauci initially suppressed the truth about the origins and dangers of the pandemic, thereby enabling the spread of the virus from China to the rest of the world
  • Fauci has supported and praised Director-General of the WHO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, a member of a Marxist-Leninist Ethiopian political party with a corrupt past and terrorist ties who has also been accused of covering up cholera outbreaks in Ethiopia
  • Fauci recently published a paper in which he dismisses the possibility that SARS-CoV-2 was created in and released from the Wuhan Institute of Virology, arguing instead for natural mutation. He also uses the pandemic to justify the “green new deal” and the globalist movement known as “the Great Reset”

Gary Frier

Are you still awake? Not sure if you made it this far, but this is what wanted to be said today on this eve of the eve of All Hallows. The question now remains: How can we rise in our thinking, feeling & willing to counteract this Plandemic?

The upcoming All Souls Festivals below are offered to help us answer this question, naming resources, strengthening our resolve, giving us an opportunity to join together as a global community for truth, beauty & peace, with the spiritual powers for good – at this crucial time when the veils between the worlds are so thin. Our beloved ones across the threshold want to work with us to create our highest human destiny, will we be open to receiving their help?

Friends – We are going through a ‘dark night of the soul’ – a karmic necessity as part of world evolution, so what are we to learn from it? How do we maintain our ability to think independently and clearly through the growing miasma of fear? This Corona-Crisis is a battle for the ′′Crown of Creation” ie. the human being.  We are not only experiencing a political, social, economic or global health crisis; it is the essence of humanity that is being fought for. How do we accept our karma in the face of world events and yet maintain our ability to create our destiny with love in freedom?

Sothis Rising

Sirian Solar Invocation Seal - Paintings - Teal Swan
Teal Swan

I have to say that Sirius is my favorite star! The way it scintillates has to be a kind of cosmic code. Even when I was a child it spoke to me. I have had many dreams over the years knowing they came from this place in space. I remembering reading something Steiner said about how besides those human beings known as Adam & Eve, most of us left Earth during the tumultuous early times when the planet was still so very hostile, & went to dwell on other planets or stars. (Can any one share that reference?) This definitely rings true for me. (I often still have a hard time being an Earthling).

The untold story of the old Egyptian cosmology - Space in Africa

As a young woman Doris Lessing’s science fiction series ‘Canopus in Argos‘ where Beings from Sirius come to help us remember our cosmic origins, made a deep impression. Truly formative, It really rang true, that yes, sometimes we forget who we really are, & the stars are there to remind us.

Orion and Sirius in foggy sky above an old two-story frame buildings with glowing red windows.
Garth Battista caught Orion & Sirius – the bright star on the far left, at a School Farm in the Catskill Mountains

Right now this special star rises over the southeastern horizon after midnight; & at dawn we can see its brilliance adorning the southern part of the sky. This morning at 5:30 am we were communing, & wow, Sirius is seriously the brightest star of the whole sky. Even the city lights can’t interfere with its beaming message.

Sopdet - Wikipedia

Sopdet or Sothis is the ancient Egyptian name of the star Sirius & its personification as an Egyptian goddess, conflated with Isis as a goddess & Anubis as a god. It’s easy to follow Orion to find Sirius: the starry belt of the mythological hunter points at this dazzling star, whose name means “glowing triangle or “Sharp One. ” Being the brightest star in the constellation Canis Major (which was traditionally associated with Orion’s dog), Sirius is also known as the “Dog Star”.  During the dog days of summer the Nile rises with Sirius to feed the fertile bank & bring life to the desert.

During the early period of Egyptian civilization, this heliacal rising of the bright star preceded the annual flooding of the Nile. It was therefore used for the solar calendar which largely superseded the original lunar calendar in the 3rd millennium BC. & became central to cultural depictions of the year & to the celebrations of Wep Renpet the Egyptian New Year (starting around the beginning of August ie. ‘The dog days’) And Sopdet or Sothis was venerated as a goddess of the fertility brought to the soil by the flooding.

Sopdet: The Sirius Goddess | Paranormal Amino

Sopdet is the consort of Sah, the personified constellation of Orion near Sirius. Their child Venus was the hawk god Sopdu, “Lord of the East”. As the “bringer of the New Year & the Nile flood”, she was associated with Osiris from an early date, & by the Ptolemaic period Sah & Sopdet almost solely appeared in forms conflated with Osiris & Isis.

Sah and Sopdet (Sothis), the Egyptian Astral God and Goddess

She was depicted as a woman with a five-pointed star upon her head, usually with a horned hedjet. In the Ptolemaic & Roman period, the European notion of the “Dog Star” caused her to sometimes be represented as a large dog or as a woman riding one sidesaddle.

During the Old Kingdom, she was also an important ‘psychopomp’ working in the guise of Anubis, guiding deceased pharaohs thru the Egyptian underworld.

From the Middle Kingdom, Sopdet sometimes appeared as a god who held up part of Nut (the sky or firmament) with Hathor. In Greco-Roman Egypt, the male Sopdet was conflated with the dog-headed Anubis.

Full moon dates for 2020, including October's Harvest Moon

On Halloween this year we will experience a Harvest Blue Moon. During the All Hallows season, the veil between the world of the living & realm of the dead is thin. Is there a message you long to send over to the other side? An omen you’re yearning to receive from the Great Beyond? One of your dead relatives may be hoping to slip you a sign if you are open to receive it. You could also catch a glimpse of yourself as you were in the distant past — or will be in the far future.

Hilma af Klint

Dear Friends, my site was down for a few days so I missed sharing this essay on the birthday anniversary 26 October in 1862 of this amazing spiritual artist :

Hilma af Klint was a Swedish artist, mystic, Theosophist turned Anthroposophist, whose work can be understood in the context of the Modernist search for new forms in artistic, spiritual, political, & scientific systems at the beginning of the 20th century. There was a similar interest in spirituality by other artists during this same period, including Wassily Kandinsky, Piet Mondrian, Kasimir Malevitch, & the French Nabis, in which many, like Hilma af Klint, were inspired by the Theosophical Movement. However, the artistic transition to abstract art & the nonfigurative painting of Hilma af Klint came thru her without any contact with these contemporary modern movements. She was truly the first Western ‘Modern Abstract Artist’.

On the Cover: A Portrait of Swedish Painter Hilma af Klint | June 2020 | Visual Art | Hudson Valley | Chronogram Magazine

The works of Hilma af Klint are deeply esoteric, & her artistic work is a consequence of this.

She became interested in the Theosophy of Madame Blavatsky & the philosophy of Christian Rosenkreutz.

No form can come into objective existence — from the highest to the lowest — before the imaginal ideal of this form — or, as Aristotle would call it, the privation of this form — is called forth. Before an artist paints a picture every feature of it exists already in his imagination; to have enabled us to discern a watch, this particular watch must have existed in its imaginal form in the watchmaker’s mind. So with future men”. (Blavatsky, Isis Unveiled 1:310)

In 1908 she met Rudolf Steiner, the founder of the Anthroposophical Society, who was on a visit to Stockholm.

Steiner introduced her to his own theories regarding the Arts, which had an influence on her paintings later in life. Several years later, in 1920, she met him again at the Goetheanum in Dornach. Between 1921 & 1930 she spent long periods at the Goetheanum.

The Guggenheim Museums and Foundation

Until recently very little was known about Hilma af Klint & her mystical paintings. She was born outside of Stockholm in 1862 to an upper-middle-class family. After the death of her younger sister, an 18-year-old Hilma turned to esoteric spiritual movements like Theosophy & Rosicrucianism, which attempted to reconcile what are usually seen as diametrically opposed belief systems: Christianity & Eastern philosophies commingled, with science & religion reinforcing—instead of contradicting—each other.

She regularly began to host séances to communicate with the dead. All the while she studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm & became an accomplished landscape & portrait artist in her early years. This was her public art & how she earned her living. She was successful & talented enough to graduate from the academy with honors, & the school provided her with a shared studio right in the heart of the city’s art scene. The building also housed a salon, which, later in 1894, exhibited works by up-and-coming artist Edvard Munch.

It was sometime after the death of her sister in 1880, that Hilma af Klint formed a group called “The Five” or “The Friday Group.” This was an occult gathering of women who had ‘spirit world’ leaders, or ‘High Masters,’ called ‘Gregor, Clemens, Ameliel, Ananda & Esther’ among others inspiring their art. According to Hilma, in 1904, Ananda’ told her to begin producing paintings from the Astral Plane. This, she was informed, would follow a period of preparing to mediate a message. Many of Hilma af Klint’s works were the expression of these sessions in which she said she channeled symbolic messages from the Masters.

Hilma af Klint Artworks & Famous Paintings | TheArtStory

The pictures were painted directly through me, without any preliminary drawings and with great force. I had no idea what the paintings were supposed to depict; nevertheless, I worked swiftly and surely, without changing a single brushstroke”.

The Masters tasked the women with a special mission that would ultimately transform the trajectory & very purpose of Hilma af Klint’s life: to convey the spiritual world through painting, & to design a temple to house the resulting works. The other members of the group declined the charge, cautioning that such a prolonged, intense engagement with the spirit realm could lead to madness. But on January 1, 1906, af Klint promised the ‘Master Amaliel‘ that she would undertake this “great commission.”

In 1888 Hilma af Klint joined the Theosophical Society & became interested in the work of Annie Besant & Charles Leadbeater, & read Thought Forms, their ground-breaking book that discussed how thoughts could be seen as colored forms carrying the intent of the sender. She also met Rudolph Steiner & studied his Rosicrucian, Theosophical, & later Anthroposophical teachings, though Steiner was concerned about Hilma af Klint’s involvement with mediumship, warning her to at least take dietary precautions to ensure her health. All of these encounters informed her spiritual development & influenced her esoteric practices.

Group 3 Painting by Hilma af Klint

Hilma af Klint’s early works were direct translations of what she saw on the spiritual plane; later she took charge of interpreting her messages. This evolution in her approach could be considered as the progression of an initiate to that of an advanced pupil or adept who learned how to manage her spiritual teachings. “Mediumship is the opposite of adeptship; the medium is the passive instrument of foreign influences, the adept actively controls himself and all inferior potencies” (Isis Unveiled 2:588).

Hilma af Klint considered the works she produced during her mediumship experiences as a “commission,” the fundamental idea being “to convey knowledge about the unity of all existence, which lies hidden behind the polarized, dual world in which we live” (Hilma af Klint: A Pioneer of Abstraction). Her first painting series of the commission, was called The Temple (1907-1915)

The Universe According to Hilma af Klint | The New Republic

before she started she underwent rituals of purification. For about 10 months, Hilma af Klint prepared for her artistic task by adopting a vegetarian diet & working on her self-discipline. She began “The Paintings for the Temple” in 1906, &, even with several periods of rest (as mandated by the spirit guides), by 1908, she had completed the first 111 pieces in a monumental cycle that would come to encompass 193 works on canvas & paper by 1915. She also kept obsessively detailed notebooks about her working processes with notes & sketches, giving clues to the symbolism & spiritual ideals she embedded in her works. As she noted in her journals, “It was not the case that I was to blindly obey the High Lords of the Mysteries but that I was to imagine that they were always standing by my side.”

Decoding the Spiritual Symbolism of Artist Hilma af Klint | AnOther

Spirals & snails depict the spiral of evolution, & the tendril, as seen in plant growth, represents the consciousness that embodies life & seeks to grow. Inspired by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s Theory of Colours (1810) She wrote:  “white is the ‘holiest of all colours’, blue ‘the colour scale of powerful, real nature, the faithful’, and yellow, ‘the splendid colour of light, of the foundation of knowledge’.” Yellow also represents the masculine, blue the feminine, & green the merging of the two. Words & letters also have significance in her work. The letters AO & WU respectively represent spiritual evolution & the duality of spirit & matter. The word avonwener written across the top of one of her paintings means “those who try to shed light on the earthlings” (Hilma af Klint, p. 42).

The Swan Posters and Prints | Posterlounge.co.uk

Many of Hilma af Klint’s paintings (specifically in the Swan series) were the result of her study of polarities, as shown in her use of color, male & female figures, & the dual concepts of above & below (the connection between humanity & the universe), the stages of life, & the evolution humanity.

Paintings for the Temple | Hilma af klint, Art deco posters, Automatic drawing

The last group of paintings in The Temple series consists of three large paintings that are called altar pieces. They were painted at the end of 1915. These works depict Anthroposophical concepts of spirit descending into matter (involution) & matter ascending into spirit (evolution) — an unending cycle, the universal dimensions of time & space without beginning or end represented by the circle.

Hilma af Klint's Altarpiece, No. 1, Group X – 20x200

The first painting, Altar Piece No. 1, may also depict the teachings of the seven rays as discussed in Blavatsky’s, Isis Unveiled (1:514): “The Rosicrucian theory, that the whole universe is a musical instrument, is the Pythagorean doctrine of the music of the spheres. Sounds and colors are all spiritual numerals; as the seven prismatic rays proceed from one spot in heaven, so the seven powers of nature, each of them a number, are the seven radiations of the Unity, the central, spiritual SUN.”

Hilma af Klint: A timely message from the beyond - Two Coats of Paint

When Hilma af Klint had completed the works for the Temple, the spiritual guidance ended.

File:Hilma af Klint Svanen.jpg - Wikimedia Commons

Following The Temple series, Hilma af Klint’s work became very geometric through the years 1916-1920. At the tail end of the 19th century, a string of scientific developments were radically altering prevailing ideas about the world. Darwin’s evolutionary theories, while not yet entirely accepted in academic circles, matriculated into almost every sphere of popular culture. The discovery of subatomic particles, radioactivity, & the X-ray confirmed for spiritualists that there was, in fact, a godly, invisible realm of existence. Yet there was another compelling reason for Hilma af Klint to seek out these groups. While mainstream art circles were wary of female talent & participation, movements like Theosophy & Anthroposophy were very heavily run by women. These were areas of society where women were leaders. During this time she painted the Parsifal & Atom series, & a set of paintings on the great religions of the world.

Hilma af Klint - Hilma af Klint was convinced that reality... | Facebook

After meeting with Rudolph Steiner again in 1920, Hilma af Klint joined the Anthroposophical society & became immersed in the literature. These teachings influenced her to give up geometric abstraction & she started to paint watercolors. These later works focused on showing the unconscious life of plants in a soft, flowing veil of colors. Her later paintings are significantly smaller in size. She painted among others, a series depicting the stand-points of different religions at various stages in history, as well as representations of the duality between the physical being & its equivalence on an esoteric level. As Hilma af Klint pursued her artistic & esoteric research, we can clearly perceive the inspiration she gathered from the artistic theories developed by the Anthroposophical Society from 1920 onward.

Through her life, Hilma af Klint would seek to understand the mysteries that she had come in contact with through her work. She produced more than 150 notebooks with her thoughts and studies.

Mjältens kraft by Hilma af Klint on artnet

Hilma af Klint never dared to show her abstract work to her contemporaries. On the recommendation from Rudolf Steiner, her major works, dedicated to the Temple, should not be distributed yet, as that would negatively affect her health. Hilma af Klint drew the conclusion that her time was not yet ready to understand them. More than 1200 paintings & drawings were carefully stored away in her atelier, waiting for the future.

Hilma af Klint – A Beginning Anthroposophical Commentary

Hilma af Klint died in Djursholm, Sweden in 1944, nearly 82 years old, in the aftermath of a traffic accident, having only exhibited her works a handful of times, mainly at spiritual conferences and gatherings. Her works were given in trust to her nephew, requesting that they not be publicly revealed until at least 20 years after her passing.

The world is often not ready to accept what pioneers working on the spiritual plane have discovered in their lifetime, & some things must wait to be revealed. In 1986, 42 years after her death, a small collection of Hilma af Klint’s remarkable paintings were publicly shown in “The Spiritual in Art,” Maurice Tuchman’s ground breaking exhibit held at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

It was not until 2013 that the first major exhibition of her work was shown at the Moderna Museet in Stockholm (they rejected her work for many years) The museum curated more than 1000 paintings & 125 notebooks. These works were unpacked from mysterious trunks, some of which had never been opened, & included her thoughts, mediumship experiences, & notes about her paintings.

And of course the 2019 exhibit “Hilma af Klint: Paintings for the Future,” at the Guggenheim, broke world records for attendance. Anthroposophers even staged a eurythmy flash mob on the spiral stairs to honor her work.

Hilma af Klint’s last known paintings were completed in 1932. They were visionary maps foretelling the London blitz & the naval battle in the Mediterranean during World War II. On October 9, 1944, she wrote her last journal entry which seems to tell us that her work on earth was done, but would carry on elsewhere: “You have mystery service ahead, and will soon enough realize what is expected of you” (Hilma af Klint: A Pioneer of Abstraction, p. 279)

Under the heading: ‘How to ride the Corona-Coaster’:

Six basic exercises – Alamandria

When the Corona 1st started crowning, my dear friend Angela Foster, who hosts The ARC (Anthroposophical Resource Center in Atlanta, GA) started a Six Basic Exercise Practice Group online. We call it 6B. A small group of us met for 6 months every weekday for 15 minutes to practice – A short sweet way to engage in this time of zoom burn out. On Friday’s folks can stay on for an additional 15 minutes to converse together on our experience. After the recent AGM, students from the ‘Applied Anthroposophy Program’ were invited to join. And last week Angela, who is always popping with ideas & initiatives, asked if I wanted to take Monday’s to offer a sharing; perhaps something on Speaking with the Stars, or a leading thought from the RR blog.

mixed media – Melissa Dinwiddie Art Shop
Melissa Demmwiddle

After taking this idea into my sleep for 3 days, I received a big YES! And the 1st thing that popped into my head was that it should be called ‘Monday Musings’. The 2nd thing was that I needed to honor the fact that it was Moon day, which is when I try & practice ‘Right Word’ part of the ‘Weekday Exercises’.

Hosken-News Blog: Jesus Christ, the Icon and the Logos of God

Being a writer, The Word, which opens me to ‘The Logos,’ means a lot to me. But I often struggle with how I use my words in speech. Thank goodness I am practicing the 6B, which for me, works hand in hand with Rudolf Steiner’s 8-fold Path – a renewal of Buddha’s ‘Noble 8-fold Path to Enlightenment’ – an outline that pulls together all the Buddha’s teachings, given in his first sermon after his enlightenment. In Guidance in Esoteric Training, they are also called the Weekday Exercises – with the 8th being a SUMMARY that is done every Day.

8 Rights: The Noble Eightfold Path — the Heart of the Buddha's Teaching - Buddha Weekly: Buddhist Practices, Mindfulness, Meditation

MONDAY – Right Speech or Right Word – When Talking, or having a conversation, to keep in mind that: ‘Only what has sense & meaning should come from the lips of one striving for higher development’. All talking for the sake of talking – to pass the time – is ‘harmful’. The usual kind of conversation, ‘a disjointed medley of remarks, should be avoided’. This doesn’t mean shutting ourselves off from others; but instead, we should come together with intention: for communications of significance -To ‘never talk without cause — to be gladly silent’. Can we be mindful of not talking too much, or too little? Can we recognize & counter our propensity to one or the other. Can we adopt a thoughtful attitude to every speech, every answer, taking all aspects into account? Can we practice 1st quiet listening; then, as we reflect on what has been said, wait, for the spirit to speak thru us.

This is Goeathean conversation. Group Moral Artistry, as Marjorie Spock calls it. She reminds us that ‘Conversing, as Goethe conceived it, is the Art of Arts’. Many of you may know a key scene of his fairy tale, The Green Snake and the Beautiful Lily, where the four kings enthroned in the subterranean mystery temple are roused to the dawning of a new Age for humanity when the serpent, made luminous by the gold she swallowed, penetrates with her light into their dark sanctuary. The golden king asks her: “Where have you come from?” “Out of the clefts where gold dwells,” reply’s the serpent. “What is more precious than gold?” asks the golden king “Light!” says the snake. “What is more quickening than Light?” is his next question, “Conversation!” reply’s the wise snake.

So dear friends, on Monday’s, (even though the Musings will change each week) we can practice the exercise which may be called: ‘RIGHT WORD.’

And what of this idea of SUMMARY, which we are called to do Every Day? What would it be like to turn our gaze inwards, even if only for five minutes, at the same time every day..? – To carefully ‘take counsel with ourselves’, to test &, review, & form our principles of life, to run thru in thought, our knowledge — or lack of it — to weigh up our worldview, & our life duties; to think over the contents & true purpose of life; to ‘feel genuinely pained by our errors & imperfections’…In a word: We are meant to ‘labor to discover the essential’, the enduring, spiritual essence of life; & to earnestly aim at goals in accord with our highest destiny. For instance asking ourselves: What virtues do I need to acquire, what do I need to work on in myself. This exercise is called: ‘RIGHT EXAMINATION.’

‘Soul to Soul’ on-line Festival

with the Central Regional Council
