Day 11 of Lenten-Tide: Today I am challenging myself to be super rigorous in figuring out my true intentions – & with aligning them with the Will of the Divine. I also want to think a thought I have never thought before – Ask a question I’ve never asked – Do the research to discover why one of my hard held opinions may be wrong.
I will start by changing my password. Perhaps I’ll dream up a new nickname for myself – or add a new twist to my grooming ritual. I hope to surprise myself at least once a day, as I seek to be impeccable in formulating my highest desires, & in being concise in expressing them.
The anthroposophical path of knowledge wants to guide the spiritual in the human being to the spiritual in the universe. But healing also connects man with the essence of the world, the macrocosm. This applies not only to medicines and external applications, but equally to eurythmy therapy and artistic therapies in which speech, music, colour and the material world take effect. In this way the relationship between insight and healing becomes clear: we have to distinguish between the conscious cognitive activity of the human being and the effectiveness of the healing processes taking place under the threshold of consciousness. Like day and night, these human activities face each other, especially since the healing processes take place particularly in sleep, in ancient mysteries in temple sleep.
Insight and healing now stand in an essential connection. Healing is an expression of the regenerative life forces of the human being. Hans Jonas has called it the “principle of life”, the American neurologist Alan Shewmon speaks of the integrative unity of the organism, which regenerates and maintains it. These life forces experience a decisive transformation with the development of consciousness in the wakeful person. While life unfolds primarily in the metabolic limb system, the development of consciousness takes place on the basis of the nerve-sense system. Compared to the large metabolic organs, the nerve organisation does not have any obvious vitality, but on its foundation, consciousness develops. Life forces of our organization are metamorphosed into the forces of thinking. This decisive connection is becoming increasingly topical, for example, for child development: ” school readiness” marks the threshold at which the child is capable through sufficient transformation of these forces to be able to summon up the appropriate attention and concentration. Now, for example, in the large study begun by Lewis Terman and carried out over several decades, and thus by several generations of researchers, a connection between the age of school enrolment and longevity has become apparent: too early enrolment in school and thus the development of intellectual awareness is accompanied by a shortening of longevity. The relationship of consciousness to the principle of life thus constitutes a current research task that is relevant to almost all fields of life in Anthroposophy.
The Calendar of the Soul by Rudolf Steiner, translated by Roy Sadler (with added titles) It’s Rudolf Steiner’s birthday verse this week. Sunday 25.3.1861 was the day of the Super Full Moon, which is usually in this 3rd Lenten week – though this year it was yesterday in v47, and a bit further away than in 1861. v48 leads to the Passiontide moon cycle as a kind of climax verse: the 7th mention of the heart and the 3rd of love, neither appearing again till next winter, the heart at the solstice and love at Epiphany. LENT III AWAKENING OF LOVE v48 In light, whose flowing from the heights would be the world’s empowering of soul, let shine the certainty of cosmic thought that solves soul riddles, and focusing its rays of power in human hearts awakens love.
the mirror verse – EASTER V THE RESURRECTION OF THE SOUL v5 In light, whose fertile weaving from depth of spirit is revealing the splendour of the gods’ creating, the being of the soul is shining, widening, enlivened in the presence of the world and resurrected from narrow selfhood’s inner power.

For this 10th day of Lenten-Tide I would like to share a practice that Sue Mohler has taken up. She is working with ‘Faith, Love and Hope’. Sue reached out after reading the post around inviting ourselves to live into the signals from our bodies as clues for healing. Sue ‘learned that Hope and Truth are connected to the Physical body…Faith – Goodness in the Astral body…and Love – Beauty – important in the Etheric body’…She also came across this thought provoking article from the Goetheanum by Matthias Girke which is well worth the read. https://goetheanum.co/en/news/the-healing-effects-of-anthroposophy
Here is a snippet: “…The human being as a microcosm may experience the support of the healing powers through the macrocosm. In it lay the assistance which the sick person needs for his or her healing and which stimulate and promote self-regulation. Many medicines are derived from nature. We know effective remedies from the plant and animal world, the world of minerals and metals. As a result, not only a medical practice is developing which seeks the rational connection to nature and which in its healing turns to the forces of the macrocosm, but also an ecologically oriented pharmacy and art of healing
The problem of the pollution of nature and groundwater due to the increasing use of chemical medicines (cytostatics, hormone preparations, antibiotics, etc.) is becoming obvious. We also need an ecological reorientation in medicine, as we have long been calling for in other areas, such as agriculture, for example…” ~Matthias Girke

27 February 2021 – “Speaking with the Stars”: Because the Moon is opposite the Sun at Full Moon, she mimics the path of the Sun – predicting where the Sun will be in 6 months. This late February Quickening Moon – like the late August Sun – rises north of due East & sets north of due West. In the Northern Hemisphere, the February Full Moon (like the August Sun) follows the high path of the Summer Sun staying out longer than 12 hours; yet, at temperate latitudes in the Southern Hemisphere, the February Full Moon (like the August Sun) follows the low path of the Winter Sun & stays out for less than 12 hours.
Day by day, the Sun is rising & setting farther & farther Northward along the horizon. Day by day, the Southern Hemisphere is slowly losing daylight while the Northern Hemisphere is gaining it. By the time the March Equinox comes on 20 March, 2021, the Sun will pretty much rise due East & set due West in both the Northern & Southern Hemispheres, giving equal day & night around the world. After that, the sun will rise &set north of due East & West, giving the Northern Hemisphere its turn for longer & warmer days.
So friends that’s EarthSky’s long winded way of saying take note of how these celestial beings are moving. We can watch them as they change position on the horizon as a way of marking the season.
272 – Birthday of Constantine the Great, Roman emperor
407 – Deathday of St. John Chrysostom, Archbishop of Constantinople, was an important Early Church Father. He is known for his preaching & public speaking, his denunciation of abuse of authority by both ecclesiastical & political leaders, the Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom, & his ascetic sensibilities. The epithet Χρυσόστομος (Chrysostomos, anglicized as Chrysostom) means “golden-mouthed” in Greek & denotes his celebrated eloquence. Chrysostom was among the most prolific authors in the early Christian Church exceeded only by Augustine in the quantity of his surviving writings. John was born in Antioch in 349 to Greco-Syrian parents. His mother Anthusa as a pagan & his father was a high-ranking military officer. John’s father died soon after his birth & he was raised by his mother. As a result of his mother’s influential connections in the city, John began his education under the pagan teacher Libanius. From Libanius, John acquired the skills for a career in rhetoric, as well as a love of the Greek language & literature.
A late medieval legend relates that, when John Chrysostom was a hermit in the desert, he was approached by a royal princess in distress. The Saint, thinking she was a demon, at first refused to help her, but the princess convinced him that she was a Christian & would be devoured by wild beasts if she were not allowed to enter his cave. He therefore admitted her, carefully dividing the cave in two parts, one for each of them. In the morning she had given birth to a child she claimed was his. He then went to Rome to beg absolution, which was refused. Chrysostom made a vow that he would never rise from the ground until his sins were expiated, & for years he lived like a beast, crawling on all fours & feeding on wild grasses & roots. One day the princess reappeared, suckling the saint’s baby, who miraculously pronounced his sins forgiven. This last scene was very popular from the late 15th century onwards as a subject for engravers & artists.
1756 – Birthday of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, in full Johann Chrysostom Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, baptized as Johannes Chrysostomus Wolfgangus Theophilus Mozart. A prolific & influential composer of the Classical era. Born in Salzburg, he showed prodigious ability from his earliest childhood. Already competent on keyboard & violin, he composed from the age of 5 & performed before European royalty. At 17, Mozart was engaged as a musician at the Salzburg court, but grew restless & traveled in search of a better position. While visiting Vienna in 1781, he was dismissed from his Salzburg position. He chose to stay in the capital, where he achieved fame but little financial security.
Mozart’s physical appearance described him as “a remarkably small man, very thin and pale, with a profusion of fine, fair hair of which he was rather vain, except for his large intense eyes, he gave no signs of his genius.” His facial complexion was pitted, a reminder of his childhood case of smallpox. He loved elegant clothing. Of his voice his wife later wrote that it “was a tenor, rather soft in speaking and delicate in singing, but when anything excited him, or it became necessary to exert it, it was both powerful and energetic”.
Mozart usually worked long & hard, finishing compositions at a tremendous pace as deadlines approached. He often made sketches & drafts; unlike Beethoven’s these are mostly not preserved, as his wife sought to destroy them after his death.
Mozart lived at the center of the Viennese musical world, & knew a great number & variety of people: fellow musicians, theatrical performers, fellow Salzburgers, & aristocrats, including some acquaintance with the Emperor Joseph II. He enjoyed billiards & dancing, & kept pets: a canary, a starling, a dog, & a horse for recreational riding. He had a startling fondness for scatological humor, which is preserved in his surviving letters, notably those written to his cousin Maria Anna Thekla Mozart around 1777–1778, & in his correspondence with his sister & parents. Mozart also wrote scatological music, a series of canons that he sang with his friends.
During his final years in Vienna, he composed many of his best-known symphonies, concertos, & operas, & portions of the Requiem, which was largely unfinished at the time of his death. The circumstances of his early death have been much mythologized. He was survived by his wife Constanze & two sons. He composed more than 600 works, many acknowledged as pinnacles of symphonic, concertante, chamber, operatic, & choral music. He is among the most enduringly popular of classical composers, & his influence is profound on subsequent Western art music.
1775 – Birthday of Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling, a German philosopher. Standard histories of philosophy make him the midpoint in the development of German idealism, situating him between Johann Gottlieb Fichte, his mentor in his early years, & Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, his former university roommate, early friend, & later rival. Some later philosophers such as Martin Heidegger & Slavoj Žižek have shown interest in re-examining Schelling’s body of work. Quotes:
“Nature is visible Spirit; Spirit is invisible Nature.” (Ideen, “Introduction”)
“History as a whole is a progressive, gradually self-disclosing revelation of the Absolute.” (System of Transcendental Idealism, 1800)
“Has creation a final goal? And if so, why was it not reached at once? Why was the consummation not realized from the beginning? To these questions there is but one answer: Because God is Life, and not merely Being.” (Philosophical Inquiries into the Nature of Human Freedom, 1809)
“Only he who has tasted freedom can feel the desire to make over everything in its image, to spread it throughout the whole universe.” (Philosophical Inquiries into the Nature of Human Freedom, 1809)
“As there is nothing before or outside of God he must contain within himself the ground of his existence. All philosophies say this, but they speak of this ground as a mere concept without making it something real and actual.” (Philosophical Inquiries into the Nature of Human Freedom, 1809)
“God then has no beginning only insofar as there is no beginning of his beginning. The beginning in God is eternal beginning, that is, such a one as was beginning from all eternity, and still is, and also never ceases to be beginning.” (Quoted in Hartshorne & Reese, Philosophers Speak of God, Chicago: U of Chicago P, 1953, p. 237.)
1807 – Birthday of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
1861 – The emergency Baptism of Rudolf Steiner
1901 – Deathday of Giuseppe Fortunino Francesco Verdi an Italian opera composer. Verdi was born near Busseto to a provincial family of moderate means, & developed a musical education with the help of a local patron. Verdi came to dominate the Italian opera . In his early operas Verdi demonstrated a sympathy with the Risorgimento movement which sought the unification of Italy. He also participated briefly as an elected politician. An intensely private person, Verdi however did not seek to ingratiate himself with popular movements & as he became professionally successful was able to reduce his operatic workload & sought to establish himself as a landowner in his native region. He surprised the musical world by returning, after his success with the opera Aida (1871), with three late masterpieces: his Requiem (1874), & the operas Otello (1887) &Falstaff (1893). His operas remain extremely popular, especially the three peaks of his ‘middle period’: Rigoletto, Il trovatore & La traviata.
1922 – A challenge to the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution, allowing women the right to vote, is rebuffed by the Supreme Court
1939 – United States labor law: The U.S. Supreme Court rules that sit-down strikes violate property owners’ rights & are therefore illegal
2004 – The initial version of the John Jay Report, with details about the Catholic sexual abuse scandal in the United States, is released. The report determined that, during the period from 1950 to 2002, a total of 10,667 individuals had made allegations of child sexual abuse. Of these, the dioceses had been able to identify 6,700 unique accusations against 4,392 clergy over that period in the USA, which is about 4% of all 109,694 ordained clergy i.e. priests or deacons or members of religious orders, active in the USA during the time covered by the study. Roughly 4% of them were accused. However, of these 4392 accused, only 252 (5.7% of those accused or less than 0.1% of total clergy) were convicted. The number of alleged abuses increased in the 1960s, peaked in the 1970s, declined in the 1980s, & by the 1990s had returned to the levels of the 1950s. In summary, over a 50-year period, out of more than 100,000 priests deacons & religious order clergy, 4,392 (~4.4%) were accused of sexual abuse, 252 (<0.26%) were convicted & 100 (<0.1%) sentenced to prison

Day 10 on the Lenten-tide journey – Some people may think that observing Lent is all about renunciation; but I see it more as a passage to receptivity. This is not a passive state of being. It is not a submissive waiting around; but an openness – a wiliness to cultivate a space for introspection.
Receptivity is a robust readiness, a vigorous intention to attend to the moral relationship we have with ourselves & the world; animated by the certainty that the way to the New Sun of Easter takes a humble reckoning reaching. And so let us reach out & receive what the tide has to teach us.

In honor of this years 3 day celebration of Rudolf Steiner’s 160th Birthday, I am thrilled to share this impressive article from Kathleen Wright, which she shared on the North Carolina Rudolf Steiner Branch list-serve yesterday. As part of their yearly AGM held on Steiner’s Birthday, Kathleen usually gives a talk: ‘In the life of Rudolf Steiner – 100 years ago“. Since they did not gather in person this year she wrote it up, & has graciously allowed me to share it with all of you.
THE YEAR 1921 IN THE LIFE OF RUDOLF STEINER
Today marks the 160th birthday of our great teacher, Rudolf Steiner. As our branch has traditionally done on this day, we will review a year in the life of Steiner, 100 years ago. According to Steiner, every 100 years marks a “culmination” of endeavors or events and new impulses or “recapitulations” should arise from them at this time; therefore, from what we observe of Steiner’s activities of 1921, we should be on the lookout for new forms and new interests in the topics of 1921 in the coming year.
Some of the interesting things about 1921: with the war finally over, Steiner was once more able to travel (his traveling was severely curtailed during the war years.) and travel he did – all over Europe, including England. (How we pray we will be able to do the same later on this year!) The work in the College he founded in the previous year continued full steam. The theme of this year’s study was” all of the Sciences”, beginning with a course in Astronomy in early January. (For a full list of all the lectures of the year visit: www.rsaarchive.org and type in 1921 in the link for “Year”.)
About 600 students participated in the College program at the Goetheanum. They were given morning lectures with Dr. Steiner and artistic classes in the afternoon with various artists. This was far from all that our Teacher did – there were lectures for the community in the evenings, innumerable correspondences, helping with all aspects of the work going on in the Goetheanum (especially the sculpture “The Representative of Humanity”), giving weekly talks to the workers – and I was interested to find out that these workers were mostly NOT anthroposophists. They were poor, desperate human beings looking for work after the war had left them destitute. While they may not have joined the Society, many of them spoke in Rudolf Steiner’s defense during the many attacks made on him that year. They dearly loved their employer for many reasons.
Guenther Wachsmuth writes that “the Spiritual Powers do honor to the greatest and strongest of human beings through the most severe tests. And the burdens which were laid upon Rudolf Steiner by the forces of destiny at just this time in his life are indications of the fact that he was chosen to accomplish an extraordinary task.” He says that Steiner had to confront “the severest battles, unspeakable suffering and opposition”. These battles took the form of articles, publications, letters and even in-person attacks at lectures, all full of malice and hatred, lies, slander, false accusations and misunderstandings of this great man and his message. He was accused of everything from being a “traitor”, “enemy of the State”, “Jesuit”, anti-Jesuit” and every possible insult one can imagine. While Wachsmuth tells of many of these attacks on Steiner from 1921, they pale in comparison to the attacks of 1922, about which we shall go into detail next year – such the attack on Steiner’s life by the Nazis and the burning of the Goetheanum after the incitement by a Jesuit priest.
The influence of the “Youth” in the movement began increasing and prompting new initiatives from their Teacher. A group of young seminarians came to Steiner rightly saying they felt organized religion was losing its affect and that it was in need of renewal or else it would die. The doctor responded by giving two courses for seminarians and anyone interested in the Movement for Religious Renewal (one in the summer and one at Michaelmas). About 100 people attended the Michaelmas course during which Steiner gave 29 talks. German students were allowed free admission because of how badly devastated the Germany economy was at the end of the war. Noticeably absent from the conference was Friedrich Rittlemeyer who had been a close follower of Steiner since 1911. He was ill at the time, but later read the reports about Steiner’s course on religious renewal and together, they and others, began plans for what became the Christian Community the following year. One interesting observation I have noted: in 1921, virtually all of the religious youth who approached Steiner were male. Today in the Christian Community Seminary course in Canada, there are 8 female students, no males. Back in 1921, Steiner had recommended that women be permitted to be priests in this new Movement. How far we have come! What would there be today if Steiner had not made this recommendation?
Another interesting event concerning youth is that a group of young members approached Steiner wanting to create something new for their own circle, a small esoteric group. (They did not like the traditional Study Groups of the ”old ladies” and there was no esoteric class at the time.) Steiner gave them indications to follow: a series of mantras which they must work with the same time each day and that they must remain close friends, aware of what was going on in one another’s lives. They must observe these rules very strictly. If they followed these guidelines, they would reincarnate together at the same time and place and find each other once more and would be able to resume their spiritual connection. At first Steiner agreed that he would meet with this group regularly to guide their spiritual work, but soon this became too much for him, especially after the burning of the Goetheanum and he advised them to all join the School of Spiritual Science in 1923. Though small, through the work of this group we have been given some important esoteric secrets on how we can work together to form Karmic circles. One sees a similar “culmination” renewal of this practice of late in the Society. One example is the group which was begun in Chicago where members work with the Six Exercises every day at Noon (EST) There have been other instances where it has been acknowledged of the great power produced by small groups of people who work together spiritually at the same time of day every day,
Also during 1921, Steiner continued giving courses for Waldorf Teachers and Anthroposophical Doctors.During this year, Ita Wegman established the Medical Clinic at Arlesheim where Steiner visited often and gave spiritual insights into the patients there. A medical research laboratory was begun that among other things, developed medicines. Eventually this became known as Weleda, but its start was in 1921. This is where Iscador was developed by Ita Wegman. Steiner gave these doctors many indications for developing new remedies. In April 1921 Steiner gave the first course on Curative Eurythmy.
Another laboratory, a scientific one was established also in Dornach and was directed by Eherenfried Pfeiffer. It was first in the basement of the “Glass House” and did many experiments with etheric forces.
A few new anthroposophic journals began in 1921: “Das Goetheanum” a weekly magazine, which Steiner put under the direction of Albert Steffen and “Die Drei”, a Munich monthly journal, for which Steiner wrote articles every month. Both magazines are still published today.
In addition to the huge volume of scientific lectures Steiner gave in 1921, he also spoke many times on the Threefold Social Order, as well as the differences in the West and the East as far as Religion and Historical conflicts go; he gave courses on Eurythmy, and of course there were many performances all around Europe, as well as Mystery Plays. He gave several lectures about Color – Plant Colors, as well as Therapeutic Application of Color. A great Artistic Conference was held in August of that year at the Goetheanum during which the Danish painter Baron Arild Rosenkrantz was the guest artist (as well as the one who suggested the idea to Steiner). It was conducted in English and there was a wonderful collaboration of American artists and European artists and persons interested in Art. This began a traditional at the Goetheanum of having artistic programs in August at the Geotheanum, eventually offered always in multiple languages.
At the request of many of his followers, Dr. Steiner gave several lectures on the Art of Lecturing during 1921. Among the most important points he gave were: one should truly love one’s subject; have a great love of humanity and incorporate the elements of beauty, correctness and ethics into one’s speaking. He recommended that one memorize the first two or three sentences of one’s opening and closing remarks, as it is the most difficult to begin and end one’s talk, so one should develop really good openers and closers; the rest of the content, one should know well enough that one does not need to write it all out, but rather to simply jot down some key words to refresh one’s memory.
There are so many details one could add, but these are hopefully the most important endeavors of Steiner 100 years ago. As in every year since his 42nd birthday, Steiner did more in one year of his life than most people do in 10 lifetimes. He was the most amazing and unique Initiate of all time. One could compare what he was to other Initiates as the Human Being is to the rest of the Angelic Kingdom: We humans are the first angelic hierarchy (though of course we are still “in training”), to have a material existence and Steiner is the first Initiate to bring the Spiritual into every arena of material life – arts, sciences, history, politics, medicine, speech, drama, religion, education to name a few…and he did it while maintaining his humanity and humility. The vastness and scope of his achievements are unprecedented. Some people have accused Steiner of being an “intellectual”, but one only has a right to say such a thing if they add that he is also equally strong in his heart and will capacities. We are truly blessed to be the pupils of this great Christ Initiate. All spiritual streams of the North, South, East and West are untied under him in this Age of the Consciousness Soul.
Take time to think on the great contributions of our Teacher and how we can honor him by following his example in little ways. One could start by reading one of the books based on lectures he gave in that year, for study is the first step on the path of Initiation. Next of course is our meditative life (which will develop in us Imagination, Inspiration and Intuition) and lastly to put into practice in our daily lives the principles of Anthroposophy. ~Kathleen Wright kathleenwright51@gmail.com

What a glorious gathering we had in honor of the anniversary of Rudolf Steiner’s 160th Birth, today with our 6BE crowd & friends. I gave a little taste of our dear Doctor’s biography. Angela Foster shared some wise words from The Foundation Stone by F W Zeylmans Van Emmichoven, & then we all spoke together (on mute ; )with Christine Burke the Meditation. Can you feel it still resonating in the ethers? Well we are making this our faithful task – a sort of 3 day vigil which includes marking the 27th of February – the day he was baptized. The midwife left him for dead & never filled out his birth certificate & so that is why this official document denotes the 27th – so that inspired Angela to call for us to speak the Foundation Stone Meditation not just day, but tomorrow on our own, & then we will gather again on Saturday as a group. Join us if you will it.

Today on the 9th day of Lenten-Tide, I am inviting myself to think about the various & sundry physical discomforts & symptoms that chronically raise their painful hydra heads. Can i see what is behind the pain? Does it happen at a specific time of day or night? After eating, or being on the computer too long, after sitting, or bending or sleeping, or…? Next I am encouraging myself to meditate on the possibility that there are specific moods or feelings associated with these discomforts & symptoms—an emotional state or thought-form that either causes them, or perhaps, as I have often noticed, the pain can cause the mood. Well which is it – the chicken or the egg? The next step is to really formulate an intention to monitor any interactions, any connections, between the bodily states & the emotional states. Now I am striving to make a plan for how I will address both the causes & the reactions with my own healing power.
Here’s an example: “After long years of studying the social question it has come to me that the basic question, which is considered today as a uniform abstract formulation, should be seen in a threefold way: the first, being like a spiritual question, the second, like a question of law and the third as an economic question. What has arisen out of the modern capitalist economic life has developed from the basis of technology and this has hypnotised people’s focus in recent times only on to economic life, and have quite drawn away the awareness of the social question beside the economic question to above all also a spiritual question and a question of rights.” ~Rudolf Steiner, The Social Question, given at Zurich, 25 February 1919
ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY
777 – Deathday of Saint Walpurga The earliest representation of Walpurga, in the early 11th-century Hitda Codex, made in Cologne, depicts her holding stylized stalks of grain. The grain attribute represents the older pagan concept of the Grain Mother. Peasant farmers fashioned her replica in a corn dolly at harvest time & told tales to explain Saint Walpurga’s presence in the grain sheaf. St. Richard, when starting with his two sons on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, entrusted Walburga, then 11 years old, to the abbess of Wimborne. Walpurga was educated by the nuns of Wimborne Abbey, Dorset, where she spent 26 years as a member of the community. She then travelled with her brothers, Willibald & Winebald, to Francia to assist Saint Boniface, her mother’s brother, in evangelizing among the still-pagan Germans. Because of her rigorous training, she was able to write her brother Winibald’s vita & an account in Latin of his travels in Palestine. As a result, she is often called the first female author of both England & Germany. Walpurga became a nun in the double monastery of Heidenheim am Hahnenkamm, which was founded by her other brother, Willibald, who appointed her as his successor. Following his death in 751, she became the abbess.
February 23–March 1: Fasching/Fasnacht – a German carnival season, celebrations, dances, & parades in the nights leading up to Ash Wednesday
A timeline of the Life of Rudolf Steiner (1861-1925) –
25 February 1861 – Rudolf Joseph Lorenz Steiner was born in Kraljevec, an insignificant Hungarian village in what is now Northern Croatia. So it came that he was born in a Slav environment & not in a German-speaking one, a fact which he considered essential for his life’s work. He was the first-born child of the railway telegrapher Johann Steiner & his wife Franciska Blie . He received baptism two days later, because they thought he might die. This is why the 27th of February 1861 has commonly been considered to be his birthday. It was mainly his mother, a quiet friendly woman, who looked after him in the first years of his life. His father was often doing a shift for three days & nights in a row, off for only 24 hours in a state of total exhaustion.
1862 – When Rudolf Steiner was 1½ years old, his father was transferred to Moedling near Vienna.
1863-1869 – 6 months later, his father took up a position as station Manager in Pottschachon the Semmerling line – which for those days was one of the most technologically advanced railways. To the end of his life Rudolf Steiner looked at that period with joy & gratitude. It was also at this time that Rudolf Steiner’s sister Leopoldine (1864 – 1924) & his brother Gustav (1866 – 1941) were born. “The scenes amidst which I passed my childhood were marvellous. The prospect embraced the mountains linking Lower Austria with Styria. I lived in this area from the age of two to the age of eight. The most beautiful landscape embedded my childhood“. In contrast to this experience of nature stands the fact that the environment in which he grew up was dominated by his father’s employment. The family lived in the station house, directly in front of the railway tracks.
1866 – Rudolf Steiner’s early clairvoyant experiences lead to a feelings of confusion & isolation. He described one event: “My mother’s sister who lived in some distance from our family home committed suicide. Nobody knew about this at the time and my parents didn’t have any message about the tragic death. I saw in a vision the whole event whilst sitting in the station’s waiting room. Later I made some remarks when my parents were around. Their reaction was to say: “You are a stupid boy”. Some days later I noticed when my father becoming very thoughtful whilst reading a letter he had received. Another couple of days later he talked alone with my mother. My mother cried for days after this conversation. It was only some years later when I was informed about the tragic death of my aunt. For the boy this was the beginning of aliving in the soul. I distinguished between things and beings “one can see” and such “one can’t see”
1869 – Rudolf Steiner was eight years old when his father was transferred to Neudoerfl in Hungary, now part of Lower Austria. The family lived a sad isolated life, troubled by fact that Gustav turned out to be hearing-impaired, unable to speak & had learning disabilities. So interesting to think that perhaps Gustav, Steiner’s little brother, made a karmic sacrifice to bring an awareness that developed into the impulse for the Camphill movement later on. The young Rudolf Steiner often took long walks out in nature. And the Monks that he met on the trails from a nearby monastery particularly fascinated him. In his autobiography he says he would have become a monk himself if other karmic factors hadn’t intervened: “It was at the age of nine when the idea established in my mind that there must be important things I have to learn about in context of the tasks of these monks. Rudolf Steiner’s childhood was influenced by many unanswered questions he carried within himself: “Yes, these questions about all kind of things made me a lonely boy.”
1872 – He stated going to the village school in Neudorfle until 1972. He remained an outsider & never integrated in the class community: “In autumn, everyone would just talk about who harvested how many nuts. The one with the biggest bounty would be the person with the highest status. I found myself at the bottom of this hierarchy. Being the ‘foreigner in the village’ I had no right to be part of this pecking order”. Guidance & help for Rudolf Steiner came through an assistant teacher at the school in Neudoerfl. It was not the man’s outstanding teaching skills that were helpful; but through this teacher Rudolf Steiner had access to a geometry book, which he was allowed to study in depth for many weeks: “As a child, I felt, without of course expressing it to myself clearly, that knowledge of the spiritual world is something to be grasped in the mind in the same way as geometrical concepts. To understand concepts that are of a pure spiritual nature gave me inner contentment. I know it was through geometry when I experienced happiness for the first time”. Beside the assistant teacher it was the priest who made a lasting impression on the 10-year-old boy. “Once he came to the school, gathered a group of the more mature students, which I was considered to belong to, in his little study and explained the Copernican system (…). I was completely taken in by the whole thing (….).Through the station’s telegraph I learned the theory, principles and laws of electricity. Still a boy I learned how to use the telegraph machine.” Following this are the first studies of History, Literature & Mathematics.
October: Pupil at the secondary modern school (Realschule) in Wiener – Neustadt. Steiner perceives the orderliness & transparency in the scientific & mathematical disciplines as invigorating in view of his first super sensible & childhood clairvoyant experiences whose unfamiliarity triggered many questions.
1876 – Summer: Rudolf Steiner teaches himself shorthand. Autumn: “I gave extra lessons to fellow pupils… The College of Teachers gladly supported this by sending me students since I was considered a ‘good pupil’.”
1877 – At age 16 he takes up the Study of Kant’s Critique of Pure Reason during mind-numbing history lessons.
1879 – July: Steiner passes his school living examination with distinction. August: His father is transferred to Inzersdorf near Vienna to enable the 18-year-old Steiner to study at the Polytechnic. He embarks on a Self study of Schelling, Hegel, Fichte, Darwin & others. The study of Fichte inspires Steiner to start writing philosophical essays.
1879-1883 – October, 1879: Begin a study course of 8 Terms at the Polytechnic in Vienna, with the help of financial support thru a student grant. As a ‘bread study‘ – he decides to aim to be a secondary school teacher. Nevertheless he visits a variety of philosophical lectures. “At the time I felt obliged to find the truth through philosophy“. While most of the people in his environment regard philosophy as something abstract, for Steiner the spiritual world is a ‘visible’ reality’. “And this is how my view of the spiritual world was received in most places. No one wanted to hear about it“. History of physics, physics, chemistry, mechanics, geology, mineral logy, botany, mathematics, literature & history of literature, politics, zoology, medicine, philosophy are a selection of the of the areas Steiner chose to study. He passed the exams in these disciplines with excellence & distinction. As a penny-less student coming from the country side Steiner found his way into the life of Vienna only step by step. He had no access to the circles of the aristocracy or entrepreneurs, industrial workers or the world of opera or big society events. Rudolf Steiner fulfilled his, until now, unsatisfied thirst for “pure music that wants to be nothing but music“ by visiting concerts & chamber music. Beethoven became his favored composer. He followed the political life by visiting public parliamentary sessions & he also becomes member of a politically orientated student organization. The sad destiny of some of his fellow students, who committed suicide under the pressure of academia, showed him how the dominating public spirit at the time caused strong feelings of hopelessness & pessimism which destroyed many lives. “At the time all this could be experienced as the seed that later in Austria lead to the crumbling of the empire”.
Karl Julius Schroer, the professor of German Literature, deeply honored & admired by him, introduced Steiner in a very special way to the ‘German Classics‘ especially to Goethe. For all his life Steiner looked at Goethe as a great personality & idol for the people of his time. In addition he was engaged with philosophical questions & increasingly with questions regarding the theory of recognition, inspired by Fichte‘s research regarding the relationship between spirit (I) & nature. Thru his intensive work on Schelling‘s contemplations about the essence of a human being, certainty grows within him regarding the ability, “to see the eternal within us in the form of the unchangeable”(quotation by Schelling). Steiner reports about this time (he was 21): “A spiritual view appeared in front of my me that was not based on a dark mystical emotions. It rather was a spiritual activity fully comparable in it’s clarity to the thinking in mathematical terms.I approached a condition of mind that gave me the certainty that I would be able to justify the view of the spiritual world I carried within me in the light of modern scientific thinking.”
At 21, on the train between his home village & Vienna, Steiner met an herb gatherer,Felix Kogutzki, who spoke about the spiritual world “as one who had his own experience therein“. Kogutzki conveyed to Steiner a knowledge of nature that was non-academic & spiritual, & introduced him to Master M.
1882 -Autumn: Prof Joseph Kurschner invites Steiner on recommendation by Prof. Karl Julius Schroer, to edit Goethe’s scripts about natural science within ‘German National Literature‘ edited by Kurschner. For Steiner this means the beginning of 1½ decades of Goethe research.
1883 – October: Steiner leaves the Polytechnic without final exam & without finishing his studies despite having successfully past all intermediate examinations. His hope was to lay the foundation for a career in literary studies with his work about Goethe’s natural science scripts, which never was fulfilled.
1884 –The literature experts positively acknowledge the First volume of Goethe’s Scripts About Natural Science, first published in March. April: On request Kurschner’s Steiner agrees to edit articles in the field of mineralogy and later in general natural science in Kurschner’s Conversation Dictionary.
June: Steiner is entrusted with the role of an educator in the household of Ladislaus Specht. This is an important practical educational taskthat becomes for Steiner a rich source of learning. He becomes friend with the lady of the house, Pauline Specht. She becomes a confidant with whom he can talk about all the things important to him. His position gave him time to establish & maintain social contacts & to pursue out his own work and studies.
1885 – Study of Eduard von Hartmann’s other philosopher’s work. Rudolf Steiner continues his studies & the editorial work on Goethe’s Scripts about Natural Science. Friendship with Radegunde & Walter Fehr.
1886 – By making the acquaintance with the poet Marie Eugenie Delle Gracie, a new circle of society opens up to Steiner. Some of the personalities he meets are lecturers of theology at the University of Vienna who recommended to Steiner to study the philosophies of Aristotle & Thomas of Aquinas. April: The book Baselines of a Theory of Knowledge of Goethe’s Philosophy of life is concluded. It already contains important basic ideas of Steiner’s freedom philosophy.
June: Steiner accepts a position offered by the Director of the Goethe Archive in Weimar.
1887 – By the beginning of the year severe illness forces Steiner to stop all his activities. The Specht Family however gives all the attention & love he needs for his recovery. Since summer Steiner thoroughly concerns himself with the questions of aesthetics. He especially studies the philosophical aestheticians of the 19th century, under it Eduard von Hartmann with whom he gets in contact. (by letter). The book Baselines of a Theory of Knowledge of Goethe’s Philosophy of life is praised in professional circles, but also criticized – in a fair way –.
Autumn: The beginning of a friendship with Fritz Lemmermayer, who brings him in contact with numerous poets.
1888 – Without neglecting the work he was engaged in previous years, Steiner becomes the editor (informally) for the German Weekly Revue. This gives him the opportunity to discuss publicly questions of politics, literature, philosophy i.e. A review by Steiner of Robert Hamerling’s Epos Homunculus, published in the German Weekly Revue, rejected by the majority of readers as a grotesque work of literature, causes astonishment within the Specht family, since the statements regarding the position of Judaism, understood by Steiner in an objective way, have been considered as a special kind of anti-Semitism. This doesn’t change his friendly relationship with the Specht family. Hamerling expresses his gratitude for the ‘understanding and the excellent article about ‘Homunculus’.
1889 –In this year it is for the first time that Steiner undertakes extensive travelling. It is also his first journey to Germany. In spring he visits Budapest, Weimar in the summer. His work-schedule for the position at the Goethe-Archive is established during this visit to Weimar. He travels to Berlin (meeting with Eduard von Hartmann), Stuttgart, Munich & Eisenach. At Christmas he visits Hermannstadt where he also gives some lectures. For the first time he encounters Nietzsche’s Work: ‘Beyond Good and Evil’ was the first of Nietzsche’s books I read. I was at same time captivated and repelled by his views. I found it hard to relate to Nietzsche’s way of thinking. I loved his style and courage; what I didn’t like at all was the way he talked about the deepest problems without connecting himself with a conscious spiritual experience”.
By the end of the year Steiner gets in contact with the Theosophists in Vienna. Although considering the time spent in this circle as valuable throughout, he doesn’t really endorse the kind of Theosophy practiced, which he characterizes as a ‘spiritual weakness’ that influences the spiritual development in a negative way. Soon afterwards he turns his back on Theosophy & Mysticism in order to further his freedom philosophy. Later (1891) he mentioned the “mystic element in which I submerged for a while in a disturbing way in Vienna. At this time questions regarding the riddles of reincarnation take on a more tangible shape. I did struggle with the riddles of repeated lives of a human beings on earth. Some revelations came to me when having met personalities who’s habits of live an characters revealed traces of an essence, entity that couldn’t possibly be explained by their genetic inheritance and the way life experience has shaped them since they where born.”
1890 – March: His acquaintance with the poet Rosa Mayreder leads to a deep friendship & a mutual understanding that allows exchanging his freedom philosophical thoughts & ideas. She share his loneliness in which he felt separated from the world because of his views which were different from the usual way of thinking. “I had nobody at the time I could talk too about my views“. Another source of redemption from his loneliness originates thru Goethe’s work in which he finds his own thoughts expressed. During the summer Steiner starts to work on his Thesis, later extended & published with the title Truth and Science.
September: Steiner moves to Weimar to commence work at the Goethe – Schiller Archive. Weimar will be his residence until 1897. “I received a warm welcome”.
1891 – At first he appreciates the work: the discovery of new, important or unknown facts. In April 1991 he says: “The viewing, sorting and classifying in the archive dulls my mind and causes a spiritual discomfort, that almost destroyed any urge to write myself. He considers his Goethe work as a skin, a shell that has become lifeless, and that he wants to leave behind for once. Otherwise my whole existence is going to become a lie and a nuisance: my work and my achievements will not be my own anymore, but those of a miserable puppet”. In October, Steiner begins to work on the “Philosophy of Freedom”, his major philosophical work. 26th of October: Doctor of Philosophy officially awarded. His thesis, later extended and published under the title: ”Truth and Science”, considered by Steiner as the prelude for a “Philosophy of Freedom”, has the theme: “The basic question of the Science of Cognition in special consideration of Fichte’s Theory of Science”. November: Steiner studies the philosophy of the middle age, “the area in which I considered my knowledge still to be incomplete. Once I feel confident here, the gap between the profound knowledge I have about the ancient time and the newer times will be closed, and only then I may claim to be on solid ground“.
December: In a letter to Pauline Specht (Vienna), Steiner characterizes the mood caused by the circumstances as so powerful to give him the feeling of ongoing disgust. His working conditions might have contributed to this feeling – the archive was limited to only a few rooms within the castle of Weimar, & his superior was the pettiest of the pettiest- “a real ‘philister’with the nature of a ‘schoolmaster’, incapable of taking a wider point of view”. – as well as his uncomfortable 2-bedroom flat, & the fact, “to have no one with an understanding I could talk with”.
1892 – January: “Today the only thing left to say is, that my book (The Philosophy of Freedom) makes good progress. The disposition and the arrangement of the content are now determined”. Besides his work in the archive, Steiner is also engaged as a writer. He often writes essays & reviews. He criticizes in his articles the preaching of morality that is done without any basis of knowledge. Because of this he made himself a number of enemies, but was supported by Ernst Haeckel. His moral views (ethical individualism) may be characterized by the following quotation: “A general prescription from the big pharmacy of moral remedies can only be rejected by all those, who really work towards a better future”. At the same time he committed himself to edit the work of Schopenhauer & Jean-Paul for the publishing house Cotta. \
By the middle of the year, Steiner moves to a flat where he meets Anna Eunike, “soon a close friendship developed“. In 1899, Steiner married Anna Eunicke. They were later separated; Anna died in 1911.
December: Steiner explains to Haeckel something that was also significant for all his later work: “Since I am a writer, I am fighting against any dualism, and I consider it as a task of philosophy, to justify monism scientifically by means of a strictly positive analysis of our cognitive capacity, and also to proof, that all results gained by natural science are the real truth”.
1893 – While aiming for a teaching position in philosophy at the Polytechnical School in Vienna with increasing enthusiasm, he continues with the previous’ years activities. Also Steiner’s popularity as a lecturer grows also in other towns & cities. On the 15th of June, the election for the ‘Reichstag’ takes place. Steiner comments: “I experience the increase in roughness and ignorance that has shown in the last election as really frightening”. After the completion & the publishing of his Philosophy of Freedom, Steiner asks many friends in his circle of professionals for their opinions & for reviews.
December: “It is now more than three years since I arrived in Weimar, and in the three summers so much strain was laid on me, not allowing me even two weeks to relax without having to work“.

He became owner, chief editor, & active contributor to the literary journal Magazin für Literatur, where he hoped to find a readership sympathetic to his philosophy. His work in the magazine was not well received, including the alienation of subscribers following Steiner’s unpopular support of Émile Zola in the Dreyfus Affair. The journal lost more subscribers when Steiner published extracts from his correspondence with anarchist writer John Henry Mackay. Dissatisfaction with his editorial style eventually led to his departure from the magazine.

#8 – the number of infinity – which always leads us to ourselves, is up for contemplation today. When I look into the center point where the 2 circles meet & interact, I hear music -a harmonious core of sound, vibrating The Word – The One Song. I feel it pulsing within me, there in the heart, under the surface. But recently it seems I have been forgetting to actively engage it. I allow the reading or the writing of the word to take precedence over listening.
And then along comes another musical offering from my offspring* – awakening my yearning to just sit & listen, like when I was young. Long hours spent listening to album after album -sometimes the same album on repeat -Striving to learn every lyric – Decoding every instrument – Dissecting the mix – living into the mood of each song – Dancing – or just laying around looking at the album cover. This immersion is not the same as having music on in the background while I’m cooking or doing things around the house, or even the same as while driving in the car.
There are no albums anymore. The music is digital – downloaded – coming out of a device. The delivery may not be the same, but listening will never go out of style. It’s timeless – Like Music itself – an opening into the infinity of the Spiritual Worlds.
So on this 8th day of the Lenten-Tide I am vowing to make taking a musical break part of my everyday life. A sacred time – to stop multitasking – to just be – Open – to Listen – to hear – to let the music heal me – & infuse me with hope.
24 February 2021- Speaking with the Stars”: The bright waxing gibbous moon shines in front of Cancer the Crab, the faintest constellation of the zodiac. But notice the stars to either side of Bella Luna. Then, find these stars again when the moon has moved away. That way – if you have a dark sky – you can find Cancer & its hidden gem, the Beehive star cluster.
Feast Day of St. Matthias, who, according to the book of Acts, was chosen by the apostles to replace Judas Iscariot following his betrayal & his subsequent death. This calling is unique, since his appointment was not made personally by Jesus, who had already ascended into heaven, & it was also made before the descent of the Holy Spirit.
For superstitious reasons, when the Romans began to bring their calendar into line with the solar year, they chose not to place their extra month of Mercedonius after February but within it. February 24—known in the Roman calendar as “the sixth day before the Kalends of March”—was replaced by the first day of this month since it followed Terminalia, the festival of the Roman god of boundaries. After the end of Mercedonius, the rest of the days of February were observed & the New Year began with the 1st day of March. The overlaid religious festivals of February were so complicated that Julius Caesar opted not to change it at all during his 46 bc calendar reform. The extra day of his system’s leap years were located in the same place as the old month but he opted to ignore it as a date. Instead, the sixth day before the Kalends of March was simply said to last for 48 hours & all the other days continued to bear their original names. Although February 29 has been popularly understood as the leap day of leap years since the late Middle Ages, no formal replacement of February 24 as the leap day of the Julian & Gregorian calendars has occurred. The exceptions include Sweden & Finland, who enacted legislation to move the day to February 29. This custom still has some effect around the world, for example with respect to name days in Hungary.
